If you notice in the field there are no trees, whereas your yard has plenty. Even below freezing temps, ice and snow will melt if unobstructed. That is why yours hasn't melted and the field has.
I'm not a farmer but I spent the night at a Holiday Inn Express!! lol |

You know, I am now thinking trees. The field has none. As you can see, my yard is filled with trees. Leaves perhaps? Ice wouldn't hit the hotter ground.
Fields are usually mushy as well. You can see that I am up on a hill running down into that lower field. <===city slicker grasping at straws! Not that it bothers me much (NW Tennessee is at a standstill, though), but why is my house covered with ice while that field across the street has none?
Can you tell I am a DEEEtroit city-boy? I say it must have something to do with compost / fertilizer generating heat. Come on farmers, who can answer this one?
