Thats so sad.... Its good to see that she will be honoured....... [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by joedraper from Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:28:45 AM) | | joedraper wrote: | | Hi MG and the rest of the family...
I'm not sure where to put this so I'll put it here:
On Sunday night, South Africa lost one of our singing legends.
Miriam Makeba aka Mama Afrika was one of the countries most well known singing sensations. She was well known for songs such as Pata Pata (The touch song) and The Click Song.. I doubt that anyone here would have the faintest idea of who she is but in the event that even just one person knew her name, I'll make this brief ulogy to her here.
She died from a heart attack after performing at a concert in Rome. She was the last artist to go onstage for the night and when the audience was calling for her to do an encore, their came an anouncement from the stage to ask if there was a doctor in the audience as she had collapsed backstage. She was 76 years old. A fast and unexpected way to die but, if we must look for any good in times of sudden death; the woman died doing what she loved best.
Her remains were flown back to South Africa today and she is most likely to recieve a full states funeral for the outstanding work she did for this country through her music.
RIP Mama Africa..

Hi Freeze, yes unfortunatley she did go the political route, but then she was kicked out of the country by the "old" government for protesting apartheid. The songs that I'm most familiar with were the traditional zulu folk songs that as kids we grew up. As I mentioned Pata Pata and The Click Song also a play called Mama Tembu's Wedding etc..
The folk songs were just reminiscent of my childhood. I was fortunate enough to have not been born during the worst of the apartheid years so I tried not to let that influence me very much. I did my education so that I know the country's history etc but I don't get caught up in the past. I was lucky enough as well to have been a teen when aparheid was abolished completely so I was blessed enough to see the change happening first hand.. Although, that said, I'm not one for political views at the best of times lol.
I do agree with you that musicians should not take the political route. They should stick to music.
Have you ever seen Blueman group doing a parody of U2? You'd love it. Fred Arnisan from SNL played the part of Mono (Bono) and he had his sidekick The Side.. It's pretty funny. I do not look to music or musicians for political guidence nor do I care for their opinons. I prefer musicians to just play music and be entertaining, you know?
I am sorry for your loss. I know she was a great influence in your country. It is always sad to lose someone you look up to like that. | | joedraper wrote: | | Hi MG and the rest of the family...
