Geez, that must be so harsh on you, having lost both of them.
Isn't it amazing how nothing ever takes away your emotions when you think of your parents not being there anymore? I know exactly what you mean when you say you remember everything about that day. Like it has been frozen in time.
Well, as I've gotten older, I like to think that if he had gotten help for his illness that he would have been a different person. To everyone outside the immediate family, he was the best guy out. The most loyal and best friend a person could have.  I try to remind myself that he was ill.

If I could, I'd give you a huge big hug and say just talk to me about every good thing you can remember about him. I do that, try to remember the good and you can still talk to him, tell him how much you appreciate and miss him. I believe that they do hear us.

Your parents did an outstanding job bringing up such a strong woman like you!
You have surely made both of them proud.

xx

Thanks Joe--that poem was given to me by my late aunt when my mom died 25 years ago--& it's so fitting for when loved ones pass
I had a great father & mother--couldn't have picked them out better myself
It's a shame your dad didn't appreciate you & your sister more --you are such a nice person & he's the one that missed out
I just feel ssoooo blue today--it's been 9 years & I vividly remember everything about that day but I can't remember what I had for supper a week ago --that's how much of an impression he had on me--he got me into sports & movies & taught me to be polite to everyone & laugh at myself & he was there for me when my mom died --even tho his heart was  broken just as much as mine
Oh now I'm  blubbering like  an idiot  --but thanks joe
I need kleenex now

Pip.. First, what a cool poem in Blah thread.

I can identify with you.. mine died  years ago when I was a teenager. I can't say I had a great life because he was an alcoholic and my mother went totally off the rails after he died. But, that said he was my father. All he ever wanted out of life was a son. Now my sister and I have a son each and he's not here to enjoy them. I often wonder if having two grandsons would have changed his outlook on life or made him any happier? I guess I'll never know.
I still get sad on Father's day for what might have been. However, having my own family now and watching my two kids get excited as hell to make their dad feel special and knowing that I'm giving them the childhood that I never had makes me smile again.

Wherever he is, I do miss him and have a quiet moment for him on Father's day.
