Okie dokie! Just got back from Bakersfield a couple of hours ago. For those who are interested, here’s my review of the Judas Priest concert on 10/25 at the Rabobank Arena Theater and Convention Center.

I drove through wind, rain, and fog (really!) to get to Bakersfield early and crash at my sister’s place. After eating at a restaurant nearby we walked to the venue. She left and I went inside, camera at hand. First thing I did once inside was buy the epitaph tour book and look at the pretty concert pics of the band (just like the tour shirt, I highly recommend buying it, especially for the Sinful gals ). I then went into the seating area and found my seat. This was my first time seeing Judas Priest in an indoor venue, and noticed that it was freezing cold. I found my seat on Glenn’s side (on the fifth row) and listened to whatever record Lady Starlight was playing.

At 6 pm, Thin Lizzy started playing. There was almost no one in front of me (yet), so I stood up and screamed to support the band. Once again they sounded great and were energetic, running around while playing the songs and getting the small crowd in the venue to stand up and clap. At the end of the show, I got a guitar pick from Damon Johnson, one of the guitarists. Overall, I give ‘em a 10/10 (and it’s NOT because of the pick).

Next up came Black Label Society. By then the venue really began to fill up. This set I really liked, probably because I already had a vague idea as to what they would play. HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The crowd got rowdy, and a lot of people began to occupy the main aisle to see the band up close (a very dangerous fire hazard, BTW). The band itself did great, even though I still don’t know what Zakk was singing and his long guitar solo still needed to have some sort of order to it, methinks (although I do recognize that he is a very talented guitarist). The other guitarist was prett cool. He interacted with the audience a lot, and the bassist reminded me of Gene Simmons because he frequently showed off his tongue. Overall, I give ‘em a 9/10.

On a side note, during Priest’s setup, I was observing someone who reminded me of a certain Iron Maiden fanboy here, some guy wearing an IM Final Frontier shirt. He kept standing on his chair and tugging his shirt to the rest of the venue, as if to show off the design on the front. When Lady Starlight was playing Stealin’ the Night from Whitesnake, he started booing her and giving her the thumbs down, again standing on the chair. Eventually she responded by playing The Trooper. THEN he got excited, again showing off his shirt to everyone in the vicinity and pretending to play the bass ala Steve Harris. Security guards kept telling to get off the chair.

Then came Judas Priest. Now…I don’t know if it was because they had the day off the day before, the venue was small and cold, it was Glenn’s birthday, or I was really close to the giant hanging amps, or because it was the last time I was going to see them. But holy shit did they perform so well. This was not the Judas Priest I saw at San Bernardino. They. Were. Amazing. No other way to describe it.

The people around me were rocking hard, yelling the lyrics and screaming at every opportunity. This was a much better crowd than the one that was present at San Bernardino. I also didn’t get too many tall people right in front of me (thank God), so I was able to see the whole stage very well (that is until near the end, when everyone was scrambling to fit into the rows, including said tall people). That night, everybody in JP was at their absolute best; Scottie beat the drums extra hard, Ian’s bass was loud and Ian himself rocked out quite a lot. The hair on my arms was standing on end due to the vibrations from both their instruments. EXCELLENT sound was coming from the amps/speakers. Rob was walking to from both sides of the stage, singing those highs as if it were nobody’s business. Richie was playing exceptionally well, doing much better at playing the acoustic part of Diamonds and Rust. Every song was a highlight, I swear!!! Especially right before Green Manalishi, when we all got to sing Happy Birthday to Glenn. During the whole set he was jumping around in front of us and telling us to “show our teeth”, almost always maintaining eye contact with all of us. It almost seemed like an illusion, really. I couldn’t help but drop my jaw a bit while he was playing a solo, still not believing that he was playing only a few feet away from me. During the slow part of Victim of Changes, he was eyeing this pretty blond girl a couple of rows in front of me while Rob was singing, “Once she was beautiful…once she was mine”. It was kinda funny, actually. Rob was walking from side to side, singing to all sides of the venue, again sang Painkiller extremely well. Once again he got out on his motorcycle for Hell Bent and with his riding crop in his teeth, using it to whip Richie’s guitar during YGATC.

At the end of the show, after playing the encore, the whole band came out and was handing out guitar picks/drumsticks, then got together near center stage and bowed and waved. Birthday Boy Glenn took a tumble, though! He was waving and walking backwards but didn’t see the wedge amp behind him. He fell backwards in a split second. There was a collective ‘Oooh!” from the audience (and myself). He got up with the help of his guitar tech and looked to be OK. We all cheered for him once he gave the thumbs up. Poor thing.

For this set, for its element of epicness and the band's superb performance, I give ‘em a 15/10.

Once the band disappeared behind the backstage curtains and all the stage hands came out to tear down the stage, I couldn’t help but feel gloomy. I’m really hoping that this is not their last tour. But if so, I’m grateful that I got to see them one last time, and to even know about them at all. Thanks to them I now have a reason to buy and listen to music, a reason to keep going when things got tough. Thanks to them I have new and great memories to cherish, and friends with whom to talk about their awesomeness. Thank you so much, Judas Priest! That was an incredible show that you put on last night. Hope you have many more great ones!!

ALL HAIL THE METAL GODS JUDAS PRIEST!!!

PS: I took some pics at the concert!! Anyone wanna see 'em?

There was this guy, sitting in the row right in front of me, who was about 6 feet tall. Shot up like a tree when he stood up for JP. Not kidding ya. I was so mad that Fate arranged us like that. He just stood there watching Priest perform, like a friggin' wall. The most he did that night was clap at the end of the whole thing. Not fair!

Also, during Priest's set a couple was jumping seats to the front, and the guy nearly knocked me off my feet. At that point I was just feeling all this at once --->

Bakersfield concert is tomorrow. Can't wait!! This time I'll be seating in front of Glenn!

I'm glad you had an overall good time at the show Vail! The short part would suck! What did they do seat you around a host of Basketball players? Chair surfing is somewhat dangerous, as we all have learned. lol
So nice to hear the riding crop is coming out! Now if we can just convince him to brin out the whip!
I hope you get a better view at Bakersfield.

Glad you had a good time Vail!!! I'm thinking that even the most well polished and experienced bands have their woops moments on stage - to me it's not as fun if everything goes off without a hitch lol. I saw Disturbed in May (mostly cos Craig wanted to go) and they played well, just went out there and played their music with no mistakes, but it felt so hollow to me. They didn't interact with the audience AT ALL, until the singer (near the end) decided to abuse those of us in seats up the back cos we weren't standing up jumping about etc. It wasn't a friendly banter thing either, he was actually quite nasty and I said to Craig yeah that's nice dude considering we are lining your pockets. I wouldn't go and see them again. Anyways, slightly off track, but it sounds like you had a fun night! (I am also vertically challenged so feel your pain with not being able to see).

I'll have my camera ready in Deeeeeetroit when we are front row center just in case he does it again!  It's wonderful to hear that Scott is talking to the audience too! Have a blast in Bakersfield!!

Damn it, HRMG! I wanted to talk about Rob coming in with the riding crop!! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ah, well. There ya have it, Rob with the riding crop in the Super Happy thread.

Now, then. On with the review of the concert at San Manuel Amphitheater, which is in, as Scottie said last night, “SAN BERNARD-FUCKIN-DINO!!!!””

Wish I could've posted this earlier today, but family members came over for a visit and was a bit busy.

I got to the venue (driving) pretty early and relaxed for a bit, watched some of the other concertgoers tailgate and listened to the music blasting out of their cars. When the venue opened at around 5 pm, the first thing I did when inside was check out the merchandise, buy an Epitaph tour shirt (beautiful work of art in the front, I recommend buying it) and buy a slice of pizza at one of the food stands. When I entered the seating area, I noticed that the pit was much bigger than the one for the Metal Masters tour…also that several of the first rows of seats were not the typical blue venue seats, but rather white foldable chairs tied to one another with zip-ties. I took my seat on Richie’s side and watched Lady Starlight "perform". She had her own little area on one side of the stage, with her DJ turntable and lights and everything. She played a wide variety of metal music from records, all the while headbanging, drinking from a bottle of Jack Daniel’s, and running around her side of the stage every once in a while with props in her hands (plastic shield and sword for Neon Knights, a couple of axes for Run to the Hills).Whenever it was time for a band to perform she would turn off the music and the light shining on her and disappear, coming back out when the band was done. Overall, quirkiest DJ I had ever seen.

First up was Thin Lizzy. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they sounded (probably shouldn’t have been considering that there were a lot of young members performing). The frontman had the audience participate quite a bit. Definitely a band whose music I’d like to check out one day. I give them a 9/10.

Next up was Black Label Society. Even now, almost a whole day after the concert, I still have no idea what to think of them. I mean, I liked their music, I really do. In fact I’d also like to check out more of their music. I just wish I could figure out just what was Zakk singing, as it was really hard to understand him. They didn’t take many breaks in between songs, which isn’t bad or anything. I just wish they had done that so that they can at least say what the name of their next song is, for the sake of noobs like myself in the audience. And don’t get me started on Zakk’s guitar solo. That was no solo. That was more like 5 minutes of “let’s see/hear how many noises my guitar can make”. It was confusing, and to a certain extent, boring. I did like the Native American headdress he had on for Crazy Horse, though, and his guitars. I give ‘em an 8/10.

Now then, on to Judas Priest

Now this was an interesting mixed bag for me. I was sooo friggin’ happy to see them, and sooo friggin’ pissed because I could not see SHIT due to the fact that I was surrounded by tall people. I literally had to stand on my seat in order to see the band, or look up at the jumbotron screen above the stage. Out of the two other times I saw JP live, I feel as though this one was the one I could not sing along to the most, not because of the lyrics, but because Rob was freestyling alot. There were a handful of false starts, especially for Diamonds and Rust (it seemed as though playing the acoustic guitar at the beginning was a bit awkward for Richie), Glenn’s guitar sound screeched through my eardrums (and not in a good way), and Rob messed up a bit on Blood Red Skies. I can say for a fact, though, that it got MUCH better as they progressed. I can say for a fact that Rob has CERTAINLY not lost it, his performance on Painkiller was much better than in Metal Masters, and a HUGE improvement from the version in RITE. He is hitting those highs he didn’t make that last time. However, I feel that he should cut the freestyling a bit, as it seemed as though the rest of the band was having a hard time keeping up with him. There were tons of surprises, such as Richie’s solos in Victim of Changes (AWESOME!!) Hell Bent (ALSO AWESOME!!!) and YGATC (MUCH better than Zakk’s “solo”). And yes, Rob brought out the riding crop (holding it in his teeth!!!) for Hell Bent for Leather and started whipping Richie’s guitar!

I absolutely loved Scott’s drum solo before Painkiller, and his performance in BRS, and the fact that he’s been more active in revving up the audience for the encore (Living After Midnight). Rob did not sound as loud as I remember him last tour, but boy did his singing and screaming improve. He did make a mistake here and there, but it got better throughout the set. Glenn was great as always, I only wish that he change the way his guitar sounds, as it was too screechingly loud that night. I’m loving his longer hair (and his backside on the jumbotron ). Richie did a fantastic job, making a few mistakes here and there but nonetheless keeping up with the rest of the band. I liked how he bowed to the audience, bending foward from the waist up and with arms extended toward them/us. His tricks with the guitar was kewl to see! I couldn’t see Ian too often from where I was at, but those few times I did he looked so damn adorable with that smile on his face.

I liked how there’s actually a combination of changing backdrops and use of projections during the set. I also liked the pyro!! Holy poop was that extremely cool to see, especially when the fire is shooting out continuously, looking like long, fiery fingers. Judas Priest certainly used it to their advantage, along with the lasers. One thing I always liked about their stage setup was the wide variety of colors that they used in lights, and they did not disappoint. Best highlights for me would have to be Heading Out to the Highway, Victim of Changes, Turbo Lover, Night Crawler, Painkiller, YGATC, Blood Red Skies, Hell Bent for Leather, the Sentinel, Never Satisfied, Green Manalishi. I also give ‘em a 9/10, as I feel that this was an off day for them, but one with many great moments nonetheless.

Overall, though, this was certainly one of the more interesting concert nights I ever had, and one I won’t forget for a long while. My stomach hurt during Thin Lizzy’s set (no doubt the pizza caused it), found K2M (er rather, he found me), could not find my car in the parking lot, found it about 20 minutes later, and drove back home at around 1 am in dense fog.

Next concert: BAKERSFIELD!!!

She went with a friend.
The last time I took her to one I laughed at all the way  through and  kept her behind me. This time, apparently, no mom no solice.
She totally lost it. I could not believe she got that scared, and I got cheewed out for not taking this as a real ordeal.
Poor girl. I know real terror, she does not.
She knows I know real terror and hates that I relate that to any experience she has. She is probably right. I should not do that.
