Yup. They are in the same group. Algeria & Slovenia. Group C.

Right about Slovenia. I saw the upset of Slovenia against Russia in the playoffs. Tricky, indeed.

While not exactly happy with the current state of affairs in Eng vs. USA, I will say that I am tooting along with the masses on the telly. With no plastic trumpet on hand, I am using the following...it is a "berrante" from Brazil. Used primarily to call cattle, sheep, other livestock in from the fields.

It certainly works to call my dogs into the room albeit with tentative reserve to come close to me...

[joedraper] Saturday, June 12, 2010 12:54:38 AM

Ha!! Yes! Still on a high this morning.. I missed the Uraguy vs France match last night.. ended up celebrating and then freezing my imaginary nuts off around a friends fire that wasn't very hot as far as fires go.
But... A draw? Yes! I will accept that and be happy with that. We haven't played that well in ages! And today, I am very proud to call myself a South African. The kids woke up this morning and started blowing their Vuvuzelas... I swore I would never buy one but... they made me cave and now I'm glad I did lol.

So um... I guess considering nobody lost or won yesterday.. we's still friends Mexican brothers and sisters??? Lol!!
I have to head out to a mothers tea organized by the shcool and then I'm back and glued to the TV lol.

[Vaillant 3.0] Friday, June 11, 2010 4:59:35 PM
Ohhh, that one! Nope, wasn't him. In Spanish they pronounced that guy's last name as "gacha" ("ch" as in 'chimp'). Probably not to confuse him with Kaká...or maybe that's how its really pronounced.

Mother! Where are you?!? She won't answer her phone. She's probably out buying a Mexican flag or something...

Yeah, I watched the SA vs Mexico match on a Spanish-language channel this morning (plans to watch it with Mom didn't work out). The commentators kept making fun of one of the SA player's last name, which was funny but it got old fast. Very good match, though.

I guarantee, I wasn't the only kid to have gone to soccer camp every summer. There is also a reason that the term "soccer mom" exists here. Like I said, most if not ALL kids play.

We'll get the games but on pay channels or, as I prefer, the Spanish channels. For the finals, I'll go hang out at the local Mex restaurant with my Mexican buddies. We usually pack the place. Last round I literally lost my shirt. Brazil vs. France and I bet a waiter my Brazil shirt against a CLEAN shirt from the restaurant. Damn head-butting frogs! LOL!!
[_strat_] Friday, June 11, 2010 3:26:19 PM
So DF is not representative of the majority of Americans? Thats a relief...

In any case - I hope that the TV stations will air all your games, so you can see how we will kick your ass on the 18th.

[Becks] Friday, June 11, 2010 3:24:48 PM
It's the same here Guido, rugby is the biggest sport and football doesn't get as much air time as it should. We went to the world cup qualifying match in november last year, NZ vs Bahrain, and it was the most exciting sporting event I have ever been to. I've been to plenty of international rugby games, but that one match of football surpassed them all by miles.

Yup. It was in the link I posted on the ball. Try to figure out how much THIS one cost! Wasn't too far away...

It is a complete fallacy that Americans aren't into the World Cup (or football in general). We all play and there are far too many hispanics here to believe it. Just not a great commercial success due to lack of airtime, promotion, etc.

Calvin has already taken to hiding once I have the ol' ball out and am bouncing it off the walls. I'll have to dig out my Brazil / Penta pix.

Oh, Serbia is good no matter the rankings. The current A team was either a world or a European champion (or close to one of those two) in the youth divison. Anyway - definately my 2nd favourite team on the cup.

Tomorrow is a good game: England - USA. Im rooting for the Americans, and since this is the opening game of our group, so we will see who do we have to fear the most. Al Qaida said that they will bomb the match, which might not be that bad... Then us and Algerians qualify automaticaly.

And Im hoping against odds that Nigeria can beat Argentina - I cant stand Maradona.

Good luck against Slovakia on tuesday!

Yeah thats true, we beat Serbia in the warm ups which was awesome as LOL! And we're ranked well below them, mostly because we never get to play hardly any international games.
Well, two draws to start the tournament, Uruguay and France drew 0-0. Very interesting.

Meh, those rankings dont tell much. They include "old glory" too, thats why the Russians are still very high on the FIFA scale, but havent won anything since 1960, when theyve beaten us in the European cup finals... Anyway... My bet in the evening is Urugvay, since the French are not very good nowadays.

[Becks] Friday, June 11, 2010 8:56:12 AM
Well that was a good way to start the world cup. SA definitely challeneged Mexico and very nearly won. I would have thought the players would be a bit happier though, I know they were close to winning, but they're ranked 90th in the world (around there I think) and Mexico are 17th, and they really pushed them very well.
[_strat_] Friday, June 11, 2010 8:56:06 AM
Oh, well... 1-1. Great game. Im looking forward to Urugvay - France in the evening.

LOl... Unfortunately all the games are in the afternoon, so we cant be excused from work. Im not kidding: it would be a perfectly acceptable excuse.

Im already thinking about deleting all Americans and English from my friends list. Friendship is all fine and well, but football comes first.

The game kicks off at 2am our time, but I am thinking I may get up to watch it anyways cos even though on paper Mexico should smoke SA, I think SA will certainly give them a run for their money home advantage, first football world cup on African soil etc.

A big surprise of this cup - DPR Korea! Qualified for the first time since 1966, got into a group with Portugal now, which, as it happens, is the same team that eliminated them 44 years ago! I hope they do well, not the least because Im concerned about what will happen to the players if they dont do well.

Terrible. His final game for France too. He could have picked a better way to say goodbye.

I have a hunch that you will. Italians always had a serious issue with arrogance, and they are definately a team that plays well against the big names, and loses to the underdogs. Best of luck.

HA! I remember that! After that it was all downhill for France - they were the better team on the pitch that game and should have won the cup.

Yeah I agree about the second half, it dragged a bit more - we were pleased to keep you guys scoreless that half LOL! Last time we played Italy, we nearly beat them, they only won 4-3, in extra time I believe. Yep it's a great morale booster for you guys - like it was for us beating Serbia! We will try our best to upset Italy for you hehehe.Yeah Rooney is a good player but will foul heaps.

Yeah, it wasnt one sided at all. The first half specialy was great, tho the second one was an unbelievable drag. Novakovi is a great player when all is said and done, although it has to be said that the two goals he scored yesterday were lucky. He had two free kicks from great positions, and made the most of it, but counting on good free kick opportunities isnt going to get us far. Then again - we will be playing against Rooney Flintstone, and he will probably make more fouls than all the rest of the players combined. IDK, overall we are all pleased with the game. Score is great, and it is a nice morale booster for the cup.

Well... Best of luck to your guys. Please, PLEASE - beat Italy for us! They are our neighbours and we hate them dear.

Oh, and speaking of a massive achievement - when our team eliminated Russia from the qualifiers, to qualify for the WC... Our Prime minister went into the changing room and cleaned their football boots. Nuff said.

Cheers Strat what are your thoughts on that match? I thought, bar the scoreline, it was pretty evenly matched. A big difference was your strikers were much quicker than our big tall fellas lol. It didn't help when our goal keeper did that whoopsy which lead to the 3rd goal, but your second goal was a bit of a contentious one I feel. Novakovic took about 3 steps or so away from our defender before he fell over and got a penalty. NZ will have to watch out cos we play quite a physical game which some teams may take advantage of and the refs may not like. We'll see what happens! Most NZ fans are realistic, that coming away with a point or two at the WC would be a massive achievment (just being there for us is huge!) - football is not our national sport, unfortunately. Best of luck to in the WC Slovenia too!
South Africa v Mexico, I pick Mexico. But I will be cheering on the host nation to make it hard for them!

Oh, believe me, I understand. Think I am going to be wearing anything buy a Brazil shirt while I am there? I'd be lynched in the streets were I to do so.

I remember the last time I was there and Brazil won. USA vs. Brazil, though, and I was at a private cricket club PACKED with fanatics. Of course, I made my Mexican heritage well-known that day just in case of a surprising upset. Actually glad the US lost that day!

Enjoy BS. THAT'LL cure what ails ya'!

lol - I imagine she does. Anyway, I hope Joe and Blackshadow will back me up with this - I am already outnumbered 2-1 by Mexico supporters.

Cant Imagine how it will be like on the 18th when we play against the United States.

Well, if Id have to bet, Id bet on Mexico too. I just like South Africans more. They were in our group in WC 2002, and even tho they are not a favourite, I still like them as a team.

There! Counting down the days to the world cup, Ive decided that we need another thread for football, since the last one fell into oblivion of closed threads.

The schedule of the world cup:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_schedule

First game is on friday between the host country (South africa) and Mexico. Cant say whos in a better form, although I will probably end up rooting for South Africa, even though Mexico are the favourites of this match,

On a separate note: great game yesterday, friendly between Slovenia and New Zealand, which we won 3-1... Sorry Becks, I will still have my fingers crossed that you do good at the cup!
