Ozzy Joins "Brutal Legend" Voice Casting

According to The Escapist, the upcoming Brütal Legend game will feature the voice and likeness of BLACK SABBATH vocalist Ozzy Osbourne as The Guardian Of Metal.

At EA's E3 press conference, Double Fine studio head and Brütal Legend creator Tim Schafer announced (see video below) that Osbourne would join a cast that includes metal greats like Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST), Ronnie James Dio (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH), Lemmy Kilmister (MOTÖRHEAD) and Lita Ford.

Brütal Legend will be available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the PlayStation computer entertainment system on October 13 in North America and on October 16 in Europe.

Brütal Legend is a third-person action game rich in combat, imagery and storytelling, delivering lighter-flicking fun sure to melt your face off.

Those ready to rock can start by visiting the newly re-launched Brütal Legend web site (www.brutallegend.com), the best source online for all things Brütal Legend, from trailers to screenshots, concept art to exclusive blogs from the Double Fine studio team, epic polls and more! Over time, the site and its content will evolve and grow, so remember to check in whenever you feel the Metal Gods calling you. Sign up for exclusive updates through the Brütal Legend newsletter, or follow Brütal Legend on Twitter for intimate access and new information nearly every day.

Brütal Legend tells the tale of Eddie Riggs, played by Jack Black. The ultimate roadie, Eddie is the first person anyone calls when they need guitars tuned or stages rigged, and has a love for hot rods and a photographic memory for every heavy metal album cover, and the lyrics those albums contained. One night, a stage accident knocks Eddie unconscious, and he awakens in a world that looks very strange yet oddly familiar, a world where every heavy metal album cover and lyric Eddie knows has come to life, and where the evil emperor Doviculus and his demon army, The Tainted Coil, have enslaved the last remaining humans. When an oppressed people request Eddie's knowledge of modern warfare, he pulls from his own experience in the only occupation he's ever had, a roadie for a heavy metal band, and under his command, this barbaric force of hot-rods, Marshall stacks, leather, and chrome will bring this ancient world into the age of metal.

Eddie Van Halen Interview

David Wild of RollingStone.com conducted an interview with Eddie Van Halen at the third annual Spike Guys' Choice Awards, which was taped this past Saturday night (May 30) in Culver City, California. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

RollingStone.com: The VAN HALEN tour was such a success. Were you pleasantly surprised?

Eddie Van Halen: You never know. But I do know this. Janie [Eddie's fiancée/publicist] and I are getting married on the 27th of June, and then we'll go on a honeymoon. Then Dave [Lee Roth], Wolfie [Van Halen], Alex [Van Halen] and I are going into the studio and record some new music and go on tour about a year from now.

RollingStone.com: Did the VAN HALEN tour help fire up some new musical ideas?

Eddie Van Halen: No, I am always writing, you know. But we're a true band now. It wasn't just a reunion one-off thing. I've already gone to Dave's house four or five times over the last month. I've got so much music. It's just trying to figure out what Dave's into because we haven't written together in a long time. But it's great. It feels like we've always felt in the beginning. But I'm sober, so it's different. He's sober, so it's different. It's a wonderful feeling.

RollingStone.com: Have you heard CHICKENFOOT?

Eddie Van Halen: No, I haven't.

RollingStone.com: No particular interest?

Eddie Van Halen: Well, I don't listen to anything really, for one.

RollingStone.com: You make your own music?

Eddie Van Halen: Yeah, I'm too busy doing my own thing. I wish them well. The funny thing is that everyone who quits the band always claims they got fired by me. Hey, I'm not the bad guy here. When [Sammy] Hagar left the band, Mike [Michael Anthony] went with him. Then when we get back together with Dave, and all of a sudden, he wants back in. It's like, "No, dude, you quit the band." So my son became the bass player. But we didn't give Mike the boot to have my son play. He was around. We didn't have a bass player. "Hey Wolfie, you want to play?"

Paul Di'Anno "Comments" On Iron Maiden

Former IRON MAIDEN singer Paul Di'Anno took part in a press conference last month during his solo tour of Argentina. When asked about the rumors that his drug use had something to do with his split with IRON MAIDEN, Di'Anno responded, "Where the fuck do you people get this from? I left IRON MAIDEN because they were going too heavy metal, and IRON MAIDEN is a money-making machine, and I don't give a fuck about it. It was not about drugs; it was nothing like that. Me and Steve [Harris]... I [wrote] the song 'Killers', Steve had [what he thought] were better songs. I thought his songs were shit. Nothing to do with drugs; nothing whatsoever. Check your facts or otherwise this interview is over... I hate that! I fucking hate that! Because people... You say something but you don't know. Well, I'm telling you. IRON MAIDEN is Steve Harris' band. It doesn't matter about anybody else — whether it's Dave Murray, Clive [Burr], me... it's Steve Harris' band and all it is is money, money, money, money — nobody else counts. And I wrote fuckin' 20-times better songs than his, but I only got one song on the 'Killers' album because it's Steve's — he must have this. Fuckin' Adolf Hitler. I'm not interested. So there you go. But you need to take drugs when you're with IRON MAIDEN because they're so fucking boring. And the only drugs were aspirin, because Steve [making hand gesture as if someone is speaking into his ear]... Fuckin' headache."

Video footage of the question-and-answer session can be viewed below. (Note: The above quote can be heard starting at around the six-minute, 25-second mark.)

In a recent interview with PyroMusic.net, Paul Di'Anno stated about the status of his new solo album, "We started to record it last year in Germany, but have since had some business problems associated with the production company involved with this project, so I may start another new album quite soon now. At the moment I am just concentrating on touring, as this is taking up 100% of my time right now."

Regarding his autobiography, entitled "The Beast", which came out several years ago, Di'Anno said, "Well, I thought if I am gonna write an autobiography, then I had better go for it with nothing held back. I didn't want it to be just another one of those poncy, pampering my ego autobiography rock books, where I would spend the whole time trying to fucking congratulate myself like so many others, so I just told it like it was. Also I was fucking sick and tired of every other fucker writing whatever they felt like writing about me, so this was a way of shutting them all up and telling them all to fuck off. After it was released, I got some mixed reactions, but generally it has worked for me as putting my life out there as it was."

Good point MG!
As much as I enjoy OZZY as a vocalist I think Iommi's creativity is the stamp on Sabbath.

Like does OZZY even remember being in Sabbath,,,,,

Everyone knows Tony Iommi is the heart and soul of Sabbath. Anyhow, if Ozzy's going to get an interest and profits, why not Geezer or Bill Ward? Ozzys voice I can take or leave, its the heaviness of all the intruments that made the music what it was.

New Steve Vai Boxset To Be Released

Legendary guitarist Steve Vai will release his famed "Naked Tracks" on CD for the first time in early June. Previously sold on Vai.com and iTunes as downloads only, Vai wanted to give his fans and players of all ages something special — an excellent practice tool for any guitarist.

Commented Vai: "Through the years, whenever I would mix my records I would usually do a mix of specific songs without the lead guitar. This allowed me to play along with the track or make loops to jam to, and because I figured perhaps some day maybe others would like to do the same. Voila! We have arrived at some day!"

"Naked Tracks" is housed in a special limited-edition digipack box set. This series of play-along CDs is designed to help create an atmosphere of focus so you can shred yourself into a personally-induced inspirational nirvana. Included in the set are five CDs featuring backing tracks from the following albums:

* "Passion And Warfare"
* "Sex & Religion"
* "Alien Love Secrets"
* "Fire Garden"
* "The Ultra Zone"
* "Alive In An Ultra World"
* "Real Illusions: Reflections"

You can download the liner notes, transcripts, tab, lead sheet and scores all available soon at www.vai.com/nakedtracks. Here Vai will give the various parameters regarding the key, scale, time signature and more of each track as well as guitar solo transcripts and tabs.

Steve Vai is one of the most influential guitarists of our time. The "Naked Tracks" box-set is a testament to his vanguard approach and creative mindset. This box set is a must-have for the aspiring guitarist, the seasoned guitarist and for all Steve Vai collectors.

Ozzy Files Lawsuit Against Tony Iommi For "Black Sabbath" Name

According to the New York Post, Ozzy Osbourne has filed a lawsuit against his BLACK SABBATH bandmate Tony Iommi, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band's name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Osbourne is suing Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the "Black Sabbath" trademark, along with a portion of Iommi's profits from use of the name.

The Manhattan federal court suit also charges that Osbourne's "signature lead vocals" are largely responsible for the band's "extraordinary success," noting that its popularity plummeted during his absence from 1980 through 1996.

Ozzy's suit follows one filed by Iommi in December 2008 against Live Nation. In that filing, Iommi claims the concert giant sold merchandise bearing the band's logo, despite the 2006 expiration of a merchandising deal, reportedly worth nearly $80 million. Soon after that agreement concluded, Iommi reclaimed the band's trademark.

Iommi's suit argues Live Nation continued to sell more than 100 items of merchandise featuring the band's likeness, name and logo, despite the receipt of cease-and-desist orders from the guitarist's camp. Iommi's suit seeks damages in the amount of three times the profits from the merchandise sales, plus a halt to the BLACK SABBATH product sales.

Iommi and Geezer Butler have both said some less than kind things about working with Osbourne in a new interview with Decibel magazine. The pair recently completed a new studio album as HEAVEN & HELL, the post-Ozzy version of SABBATH featuring vocalist Ronnie James Dio, and Butler said that working with Dio was much easier than Osbourne. He explained, "Ronnie's a songwriter in his own right — he's got tons of ideas. Whereas Ozzy . . . in the old days, he'd come up with a vocal line and I'd write the lyrics. Ronnie is 100 percent involved in both the musical side and the vocal side, and he writes his own lyrics as well."

Butler added that Osbourne didn't take him seriously as a songwriter, saying, "If we were with Ozzy and I came in with the killer riff of all time, Ozzy wouldn't even think of doing it because I'm not the guitarist and that's the way he thinks . . . That's why it was so bloody hard to write anything."

Butler said about HEAVEN & HELL's debut CD, "The Devil You Know", "If we'd written this album with Ozzy, we'd still be working on the first track."

Iommi added that there was a sharp difference between the singers live as well, saying, "It was great being with Ozzy on the road . . . but with Ronnie it's a lot different, because we go out and we know exactly what we're gonna be doing. With Ozzy, we didn't really know. It was touch and go sometimes on some of those early shows, whether he was gonna turn up, if he'd be able to sing, if his voice was gone, or what. We'd have to cancel shows, which Geezer and myself really hated. But with Ronnie, we've never canceled a show."

HEAVEN & HELL will tour Europe later this spring and summer, with North American dates scheduled for August.

Ozzy Osbourne is currently working on his next solo album.

Metallica Comment On Upcoming DVD Shoots

METALLICA has posted the following message on the band's official web site:

"There's been a little chatter here and there about us filming a few shows this summer for potential release on DVD and among the countless Internet rumors, these ones are actually true! We thought it would be cool to document a few shows that are unique and sure to be extra memorable for us, and hopefully for you too . . . First up are the three sold out shows in Mexico City, Mexico at Foro Sol on June 4, 6, 7 and later this summer, we also plan to have the cameras rolling at the sold-out show in Nimes, France at Arenes de Nimes, the historic Roman amphitheatre where we'll be on July 7. For any METALLICA friends going to these shows, bring your war faces and don't be scared of the cameras!!"

METALLICA has issued several DVDs in the past, including "Cliff 'Em All", "Cunning Stunts", "S&M With The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra" and "A Year And A Half".

The band, recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, continues to tour behind "Death Magnetic", which has sold 1.77 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. They'll play Europe throughout the summer before returning to North America in the fall.

Paul Rodgers To Spend 2009 Writing New Material

Apart from a brief set of summer dates with BAD COMPANY, Paul Rodgers says that he plans on spending the rest of 2009 at home relaxing and working on solo material. "Frankly, I have a fantastic happy home (laughs) and I overlook the lake," he tells The Pulse of Radio. "And I actually want to spend some more time creating the music. Y'know, one of my dreams was always to have a piano — a room with a piano overlooking the ocean or a lake. Well, I have that and I'd like to spend some time on it if I may, please. So that's what I plan to do this year."

Rodgers recently announced that he has parted ways with Brian May and Roger Taylor of QUEEN, ending their five-year association. Rumors began spreading when after last year's European dates behind their first studio album together, "The Cosmos Rocks", the band failed to announce any North American dates. Rodgers told Billboard, "At this point we're gonna sit back from this. My arrangement with (May and Taylor) was similar to my arrangement with Jimmy Page in THE FIRM in that it was never meant to be a permanent arrangement."

Rodgers, who'll be reuniting with BAD COMPANY this summer for a string of dates, added that he was ultimately proud of his association with QUEEN, saying, "I think we made a huge success of it, actually. We did two world tours and a couple of live recordings, and . . . made a studio album which was pretty historical for (them) because they hadn't really gone in the studio with anybody and recorded something like that for a very long time. So it was quite an achievement, I think."

He went on to say, "There were some fantastic emails we received that almost had me in tears . . . There were a lot of younger people who had given up the idea they'd ever see anything like QUEEN live again, and there it was, full-on. When Brian first called up and said, 'Do you fancy a couple dates, just for fun, in Europe, I said 'great' — and it turned into so much more than that."

Rodgers explained that he drew the line this summer when BAD COMPANY suggested that the band hit the road for longer than their 10-date reunion trek. "They did sort of want a sort of full on four-month tour," he said. "And I said, I'd rather keep it — I just came off a massive QUEEN tour, and to cut a long story short, I like to keep my touring brief. Y'know, short and sweet and I learned that lesson many years ago. And I went out with QUEEN for three or four months, and I thought (laughs), "Yeah, this is the last time I go out for three or four months.' I'm gonna go out and keep it short and sweet, so that's what we're doing here."

BAD COMPANY with special guests the DOOBIE BROTHERS kick off their summer dates on June 19 in Atlanta at Chastain Park Amphitheatre.

On August 8, the band will release their new concert DVD, "Bad Company - Hard Rock Live", which will be also be available exclusively at shows during the concert run. Prior to their one performance in 2008, the band had not performed together in nearly a decade.

Zakk Wylde On... Everything!

Gibson.com
recently conducted an interview with Zakk Wylde (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On songwriting:

Zakk: "I don't just write lyrics; I write about things that are real to me. Let me tell you something that was hysterical. I was working on 'Down to Earth' with Ozzy and they brought in these professional songwriters. Meanwhile, I'm writing all these songs that later went into BLACK LABEL — like 'Love Reign Down', with that power riff that Ozzy sounds great singing over it, which was about my mother passing away, and 'Bleed for Me', which is about God … But what do I know. I guess I'm not a real songwriter, because these guys, I shit you not, decided to write a love song for Ozzy and came up with: 'Girl, you are so pretty/girl, you are so fine/girl, I brought you this flower/girl, would you be mine?' And Ozz is just sitting there saying nothing, and I'm saying, 'You're joking, right? Am I getting punked?' The truth is everybody just wants to get their two cents in, if they've earned it or not. I laugh when I go into a music store and there's a title called 'How to Write Songs'. You can't teach someone how to write a song. Angus Young didn't read a couple books to learn how to write 'Hells Bells'. All the bands and musicians I grew up on and loved, like LED ZEPPELIN and JIMI HENDRIX … it's their names that are on their songs. That's the beauty of buying a record by a real artist. GUNS N' ROSES' 'Appetite for Destruction' was written by GUNS N' ROSES, not some weak-asses like those lame songwriters for AEROSMITH. AEROSMITH wrote great songs like 'Dream On' and 'Back in the Saddle' when they were on booze and drugs. Next thing you know, they get sober and bring songwriters in and then it's the most watered down s***. If you can't write songs you're just a puppet as phony as BRITNEY SPEARS and all those boy bands. If you can't sit behind a piano or pick up a guitar and write a song, then you don't have any business making records."

On METALLICA and "Some Kind of Monster":

Zakk: "When I saw the guys, I said, 'What were you thinkin'?' Who needs a psychiatrist? Like I need marriage counseling? I've been married for 24 years. Look, I'm gonna get in fights with the wife and that's life, man. You got the high and the lows. You're in a band, you're gonna fight, you're gonna get over it or it wasn't meant to be any more. The bottom line is this: Tough times don't last; tough people do. Once Mom sent me to Promises rehab. I said, 'Promises rehab?' I'll make you a promise right now: either I'm going to cap myself or some mother is going to die in this joint.' And one of the bylaws of BLACK LABEL is 'suicide is not an option.' I got in there and had no time for those weak-willed assholes. One guy said he just couldn't get out of bed in the morning to get to the group therapy meetings. I said, 'Hey, sometimes I don't want to get up on that stage but you get your damn jock strap on, you man up, and you do it.' I've got no time for weak-willed bull****. I was cut from the same cloth as General Patton. Hey, lions are born lions. They are not made. Berserkers are born berserkers. They are not made. Marines are born Marines. They are not made. Get tough or get out."

Steven Adler On GNR Reuion (It isn't happening just so you don't get your hopes up)

A BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitor by the name of Phillip O'Brien has submitted the following report:

Original GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler is still holding out for a reunion with the band's "Appetite For Destruction" lineup.

Adler, currently on a drum-clinic tour of Australia presented by Allans Music, answered a number of questions to fans at the Sydney clinic last night (Wednesday, May 27).

Most queries had to do with Adler's relationship with GN'R frontman Axl Rose and whether Steven is hopeful of a reunion.

Adler didn't hold back.

"Axl is being a real selfish prick about it," he said. "Forget about the original band for a second. Axl's not thinking about the fans. The fans want a reunion desperately. It's really sad because we are all still alive and I know there's so many people that want to see us. I hope Axl gets it together soon while the fans still want it."

Adler praised Axl Rose for his past efforts.

"Axl is a genius and I still love the guy," he insisted. "Last time we met — about two three years ago — things were great. We shared a $3000 bottle of tequila and things went smooth.

"I really hope for the fans that we do a reunion tour."

Adler said he'll return home from Australia later this week where he'll record a track on the upcoming solo album by former GN'R member Slash.

"I'm so happy that Slash asked me to be on this album and I record with him as soon as I return home," he said. "After that I'm going to hit the recording studio with (ADLER'S APPETITE) to do a new album. We'll be touring the U.S. after that.”

On his first drum kit:

"My first drum kit was actually my mother's Tupperware. I couldn't afford drums when I was a kid. I bought my first set of drums off a friend at school."

On his favourite GUNS N' ROSES song:

"I'd have to say 'Nightrain'. So much adrenaline rushes through me when I play that."

On whether he still listens to "Appetite For Destruction":

"All the time. I can never get sick of that."

On getting kicked out of GUNS N' ROSES:

"It was devastating. My dream had been taken away from me. Saddest part was I had their backs; we were a gang. There were so many times when I had their backs. I used to get into fights at bars defending them. We we a gang. I guess the hardest part was Slash not having my back. We were childhood friends and that was the hardest part not having Slash's back when I got kicked out. But my grandfather told me a good piece of advice and that's time heals all wounds. I'm excited to have Slash back as a friend and to be working with him again."

Rob Halford Discusses new Live Record

Gary Graff of Billboard.com reports: JUDAS PRIEST has chosen 10 songs not previously released in live album form for its next concert set — "A Touch of Evil: Live", which is due out July 14, in the midst of the band's U.S. summer tour.

"A Touch of Evil" includes live renderings of longtime fan favorites such as "Painkiller", "Dissident Aggressor", "Riding on the Wind", "Between the Hammer & the Anvil" and "Eat Me Alive", as well as "Hellrider" from "Angel of Retribution", the group's 2004 reunion album with frontman Rob Halford, and two tracks — "Death" and "Prophecy" — from last year's rock opera "Nostradamus".

"I love those songs," Halford tells Billboard.com. "All of those songs just crush. Because they've never been recorded live in this way, it's just something fresh to put out. And when you listen to it and think this band has been around for three decades, with a combined age of 250-something years...I mean, how cool is that? It's a very fierce record and just captures the band's attitude and feeling in a very strong, determined way."

Tony Iommi Discusses The Devil You Know

Robert Gray of Ultimate-Guitar.com recently conducted an interview with HEAVEN & HELL / BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi as part of a series entitled "Hit The Lights." Topics of discussion included the HEAVEN & HELL album "The Devil You Know", working at Rockfield Studios, reuniting with Ronnie James Dio, and what has prevented the recording of a new BLACK SABBATH album with Ozzy Osbourne. Several excerpts from the interview follow below:

On how "The Devil You Know" came to fruition:

"We toured Japan as part of our last trek, and went out for dinner. We began chatting, and had a few drinks. Someone said, 'Does anybody fancy writing a new album?' and everyone replied, 'Yeah, that's an idea. Why don't we do that?' Really, that's how 'The Devil You Know' started."

On how things developed following initial writing sessions for "The Devil You Know":

"We just wrote some material at my studio — 'Breaking Into Heaven' was the first track we wrote, I think. I just then continued to write some riffs and gather some ideas, placing them onto a CD. The other members did the same. We agreed to meet up in Los Angeles, due to the simple reason that Geezer, Ronnie and Vinny are all based in Los Angeles. It made more sense for me to travel to Los Angeles, as opposed to everyone travelling to England. I travelled to Los Angeles, and we then just all presented our ideas. We listened to all our ideas in a room, and said, 'Yeah, let's work on this idea.' When we finished writing 'The Devil You Know' in Los Angeles, we went into a pre-production stage where we played everything live, and just kept on playing that material until we got used to playing each song. When we went to Wales, we could just enter the studio, and play those songs. We didn't have to play those songs five to six times, as we knew them, and could play them within the first two takes. That was the great thing about recording 'The Devil You Know'."

On "The Devil You Know" featuring many mid-paced tracks:

"Yeah, we did write a few mid-paced tracks. If you listen back to a lot of our material, you'll realize that it's very similarly mid-paced. Not everything we've written has been fast, though I think people seem to think that we always write fast tracks. We don't. We might include two to three quick tracks on an album, but that's usually about it. We've never written a whole album with solely fast material. We always wrote a selection of slow and fast songs, and that's really what we did in writing 'The Devil You Know''s tracks. We wrote two to three fast songs, while the the rest are mid-tempo. We could write an album of fast songs, but what we do is write material that we like at the time."

On what has prevented a new BLACK SABBATH album being recorded with Ozzy Osbourne:

"Really, one of the problems was communication, and being able to get down to work onto a new album. Ozzy had all these ongoing MTV projects, and various other projects. If you're going to record an album, you've got to channel all your concentration into that. You can't spend a day recording an album, spend another day handling a TV project, and spend another day conducting interviews. You've got to move onwards, and record an album. You have to channel your mind into recording that album, and become involved in making that album. You have to give a hundred percent commitment. Otherwise, it isn't worth making an album."

On bassist Geezer Butler stating that scrapped BLACK SABBATH material resembled Ozzy Osbourne's solo material:

"That's possible, though I can't remember. Ozzy has recorded a lot of solo material, and one of the problems with him is the fact that he tends to combine his solo career into what we're up to. We don't want our sound to be the same as his solo material. Sometimes he treated BLACK SABBATH like that, and we're not that type of group."

On whether HEAVEN & HELL will perform all of the tracks from "Heaven and Hell" during 2010 to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary:

"We might perform all of 'Heaven and Hell''s tracks live. To be honest, time creeps up on you so quickly that you forget how long it's been. The first SABBATH album was released nearly forty years ago."

LONG ass Tony Iommi Interview

In one of the most revealing and candid musician-to-musician interviews ever recorded, "Face To Face" host Rick Wakeman holds court with his longtime friend, the guitar icon Tony Iommi, who is best known as the founding member of pioneering heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH. Although it was over 30 years ago when Wakeman was asked to contribute his keyboard skills on BLACK SABBATH's legendary "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath" album, the pair reminisce with ease, as Rick gathers the evidence on why Tony Iommi is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential guitarists in rock music. He is, after all, considered to be the man who, more or less, single-handedly invented the heavy metal riff.

Some phenomenal rock and roll anecdotage follows; recalling tales of his school years with Ozzy Osbourne, their evolving friendship, his early influences and the formation of SABBATH. Iommi explains some of the more unknown mechanics behind their writing and recording methods, right from their initial explosion into the industry, through to the relentless touring across the world, the drink, the drugs, the highs, the lows, the boozing on aeroplanes and the hedonistic happenings surrounding the departure of Ozzy from SABBATH in 1979.

Tony Iommi sets the record straight on some of the myths surrounding Ozzy's exit and the subsequent survival and success for SABBATH during the years before they reunited with him in the '90s. Iommi delivers the hilarious account of when he witnessed the unique meeting of Brian Wilson of the BEACH BOYS and Ozzy backstage at Buckingham Palace (a concert to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002) and brings us up to speed on how it feels to be working with Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice in the acclaimed HEAVEN & HELL band.

Kerry King Interview

California thrashers SLAYER are putting the finishing touches on their new album with producer Greg Fidelman for a late summer release via American Recordings/Sony BMG. The forthcoming CD will include the song "Psychopathy Red", which was made available as a limited-edition seven-inch vinyl disc on April 18, 2009 as part of the third annual Record Store Day.

Prior to the new album release, SLAYER will join forces with MEGADETH to perform together for the first time in more than 15 years when they co-headline four shows in Canada in late June. The tour, dubbed "Canadian Carnage", will also feature MACHINE HEAD and SUICIDE SILENCE, and will see MEGADETH and SLAYER each closing two of the four shows. SLAYER will also co-headline with MARILYN MANSON on the five-week Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, set to kick off July 10 in Sacramento, California.

On Tuesday, May 19, BLABBERMOUTH.NET spoke to SLAYER guitarist Kerry King about the band's new CD and their upcoming touring activities. Highlights of that conversation follow below.

On the status of the new album recording sessions:

Kerry: "Probably today was the last day for touch-ups. The longer you let that go on, you can keep fixing it forever; you've just gotta cut the line at one point and say, 'We're done.' But I think Tom [Araya] finishes up vocals today, and then it's just gotta get mixed."

On whether producer Greg Fidelman is going to be mixing the album as well:

Kerry: "To my knowledge, I think he's doing it. I don't always pay attention to that. But I haven't heard anything to the contrary, so I would imagine, yeah."

On Greg Fidelman being a somewhat odd choice for a producer considering that a lot of fans seem to blame him for the distorted sound on METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" album:

Kerry: "I would never do that because — no offense to him or METALLICA — but it's not Greg's fault for the last 15 years of METALLICA. I think he made a decent record with them. I think 'Death Magnetic' is pretty cool. I mean, It's not the glory of the '80s, but it's better than 'St. Anger', you know what I mean?! You're dealing with hard-headed dudes. We're the same way. When you're in the business for as long as us and them [METALLICA] are, you don't always [listen to] everybody's opinion; you've kind of got your own opinion. I blame everybody, not just him. [Laughs]"

On the songwriting/recording process for the new album:

Kerry: "We were over-ready [when we recorded 2006's 'Christ Illusion']. My songs [for the new album] came together since the middle of January — that was super-fast. I [attended] the NAMM show in the middle of January [2009], the big trade show out here [in California]. I might have had some riffs [at that point], but I had no songs. So everything I've done [songwriting-wise] has been put together since then. And this time when we went into the studio, we were, like, under-ready, because there were songs that hadn't even been finished, so we actually had to teach Dave [Lombardo; drums] some of them in the studio, which is totally unique for us. When you do it like that, you risk songs sounding the same and vocal ideas being similar, but I think everything sounds really different. . . [We did it that way because] we had a window of time that we secured Greg Fidelman [for and] we wanted to keep that happening, so after the NAMM show came around, I went, 'Shit, I'd better get some fuckin' songs happening.' So I got off my ass and really worked at it."

On how he would describe the new material:

Kerry: "I think 'Christ Illusion' and 'God Hates Us All' [2001] were compared to faster records like 'Reign In Blood' [1986]. I think this one, when it's all said and done, will be compared to 'Seasons In The Abyss' [1990], because I think 'Seasons' was a little bit of everything, as far as SLAYER goes. I think this one has a little bit of everything — more so than anything we've done since 'Seasons'. So I would imagine people are gonna compare it to that one."

On how the songwriting is split between him and fellow guitarist Jeff Hanneman this time around:

Kerry: "I don't know which songs... We've got 13 songs. I don't even know if they're all done, it's been such a hectic recording thing, but musically I wrote six and he wrote seven. It's about as down the middle as you can get."

"I think, as a general description [I tend to write the faster stuff and Jeff comes up with the moodier material], but that's not to say that Jeff won't write fast and I won't write slow, but generally I'm the fast, thrashier dude and Jeff's definitely the more moodier guy, but trail off into each one's domain every once in a while."

"I think everything [Jeff's] done came up at least since November. Because we did those first three songs [including 'Psychopathy Red'] in October and those were all his. I don't know if he's worked just since January like I have. I would imagine he probably worked a little earlier than that."

On why not all 13 songs that are being recorded will make it to the finished album:

Kerry: "I got out of that mindset that was popular in the '90s when everybody put as much material on CDs as would fit. I just think that's a waste of time, and I think it's a waste of song ideas, because everybody I've ever heard do that, maybe two or three songs are good and the rest is just filler. All my favorite records from whan I was growing up had 10 songs tops, and they're all kick-ass, so I just [think back to] how I perceived records as when I was a fan."

On upcoming Canadian mini-tour with MEGADETH and MACHINE HEAD:

Kerry: "I think it's good for the fans because anybody that's been into this kind of music since the mid-'90s has never seen a tour like that. So, if it goes well, maybe a year or two down the line, we'll do it all through Europe, we'll do it all through America, but these first four [shows], they seem to be selling pretty awesome, and from a fan's perspective, I think it's cool. I think it's even cooler that MACHINE HEAD is on it — I think that's gonna be awesome. I've been trying to tour with them — again — for the last couple of years, so at least we'll get a few shows under our belt."

On whether he would ever consider playing an entire album again from beginning to end the way SLAYER started doing with "Reign In Blood" a few years ago:

Kerry: "I hope not. [Laughs] It alienates part of your crowd. Sure, we could do it with 'Reign In Blood' 'cause everybody thinks that's the quintessential thrash album of all time, so it means a lot to a lot people. But to dedicate that much of your set time to one record when there is so much of your career you're gonna leave out... It's cool, but I hope we never get in a... I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm sure somebody's gonna say, 'Hey, why don't you guys do 'Seasons'?' I hope we don't have to, because I like to do our setlist with a big variety of our history. We never really had a down period where people don't like what we've put out, so we don't have to let it gravitate to one time frame — we can play songs from the '80s, and we can play songs from the '90s and we can play songs from the last decade."

On whether he considers recording and putting out albums to be less important for SLAYER as a band because of the state of the record industry and whether releasing new CDs is nothing more than an excuse to go out on the road:

Kerry: "We don't really need an excuse. I think we're a band that's been around long enough to where when we come around, people will come out to see us, but I think new music definitely helps because there's something new to go see as part of your show. Every time you put one out, the industry's so different — you don't know how you're gonna market it, you don't know if it's gonna be a record that's [just] available online, but metal fans seem to like to have the disc and the artwork and all that other shit, so in my line of work, I think it's still important to have new music [available to promote]."

On whether he's contemplating retiring from SLAYER at some point in the not-too-distant future once he has reached a certain age:

Kerry: "I'm not, but I'm only one of four people, so... I don't know what's in everybody else's head. I'm into it. I'm thinking about — while we're on this hot writing spree — making up stuff for the next record and just leaving it sit until the time comes when we need it. I'm looking forward to the next record. I'm already thinking about stuff we can put on there."

Tarja Turunen Interview

Sonic Cathedral
webzine recently conducted an interview with former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Sonic Cathedral: This is your first time touring solo [without NIGHTWISH] in the United States. What made you decide to come out here finally?

Tarja: You know, this is my third try, I think, already to come here, so I'm actually really, really happy it finally came true. My wishes were fulfilled. You know, I have lots of followers here in the United States and they have been supporting me a lot in my solo career as well as in my previous career with NIGHTWISH. So it has been really marvelous to get their support and now it's very important for me to give my best for them. Back to them somehow. This gratitude that I have.

Sonic Cathedral: Speaking of NIGHTWISH, you were let go in a very bad public way. It's been a few years since the letter and you seem much happier now. How have things been for you after going through that experience?

Tarja: Well, many things have changed. Actually, the whole career as a solo artist is radically different than being a member of a band. I mean, everything is different. The whole organization around me. I have to be deciding more things on my own. I mean, there is so many things. Also the responsibility that I'm carrying on my own is, of course, very different than before. But the thing is that I have learned so many things. Every day is such a different day and I'm also writing songs on my own today so I'm really happy to be able to do that. To have that sort of freedom to explore what is inside of my soul and my heart. Then let people hear that. What's really there. That has been a really beautiful thing.

Sonic Cathedral: So you're doing a lot more writing. What is it like to be more involved in that process rather than just being the singer?

Tarja: Of course it gets more personal. That's what it all is. I mean, it gets really personal and, you know, it's just very rewarding. I have to be so honest with the music today; that's because I believe in that. I don't know if this is a very naive thought in a way, but I believe if you are honest with the music then people can reach the message easier and the music touches them. I mean, music is the emotion for me and that's all about it. I want to deliver emotions for the audience. For the listeners. That is it. That's the beauty in it. It's so lovely to be a musician. It's a privilege today to be an artist.

Sonic Cathedral: You have a second album you have been working on called "What Lies Beneath".

Tarja: Yes.

Sonic Cathedral: How has that been coming along and when can we expect it?

Tarja: Well, I have quite many songs already. (Laughs) Actually I wrote around 20 songs already which are not all going to be the album, of course. (Laughs) Otherwise I need to make a double album again. (Laughs) But, I mean, that there are lots of good songs. Kind of a same continuance process from "My Winter Storm" to the next one but the radical difference is the variety of songs that will be offered but more or less radical with the heavier guitars and with overall heavier songs. Then also some moody sounds...So I still want to keep on the same line but make a radical difference to the songs even more than "My Winter Storm".

Sonic Cathedral: So you're going to stay in the heavy metal genre for this one?

Tarja: Yeah, of course. Of course. Come on. (Laughs) It's part of me. But you know part of me. (Laughs)

"Twilight" Actor to Portray Varg Vikernes In New Film

Jackson Rathbone, the teen heartthrob from "Twilight", has reportedly agreed to play Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh) — the former BURZUM mastermind who is currently serving a Norwegian prison term for the August 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) and setting fire to three churches — in the upcoming movie "Lords Of Chaos".

Based on Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind's book of the same name, the film depicts true events and revolves around the black metal sub-culture that spawned a wave of murders and church arsons across Norway in the early 1990s.

Making his English-language debut with "Lords Of Chaos" will be hot Japanese director Sion Sono.

Stuart Pollok of Los Angeles-based Saltire Entertainment, Ko Mori of Eleven Arts and Oh Jungwan of Korea's Bom Productions are producing the film, which starts shooting in Norway in mid-September.

When asked why he chose to make the "Lords Of Chaos" movie, Pollok — who was in Cannes this past week to sell the project — told Dagbladet.no, "It's a fascinating subject, a visually great world and a funny portrait of Norway. Quite possibly, black metal is Norway's greatest cultural export of the last 20 years."

Rathbone plays Jasper in Summit's "Twilight" series and is currently shooting the lead role in M. Night Shyamalan's $140-million "The Last Airbender" for Paramount Pictures.

In a 2004 statement posted on the Burzum.org web site, Vikernes slammed the "Lord Of Chaos" book as "a pool of mud," insisting that "the vast majority of all the statements made in this book are either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best. This includes the statements attributed to me!" He went on to say, "This book serves only one single purpose and that is to create a myth around my name and to mystify me. If that was their objective they have indeed succeeded with their work. Well, the book seems to have served one other purpose too. The authors have managed to fill the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies. What could have been a righteous revolt has been made into some pathetic, embarrassing, brain-dead, impotent and traditional poser-culture best exemplified by bands like DIMMU BORGIR — and indeed VENOM!"

Wacken To Be Streamed Live For The First Time

The 20th Wacken Open Air metal festival has been sold out for months already. But fans who couldn't get a ticket shouldn't despair, because the Wacken summer begins in May in Berlin at the "Wacken Rocks Berlin" festival, reaches its climax at the end of July with the legendary Open Air in Wacken and its live stream broadcast from the rock fan's Mecca, and doesn't finish until late in August with the twin festival "Wacken Rocks Seaside" and "Wacken Rocks South" in Aurich and Rieden/Kreuth respectively.

So the good news is that there are still tickets available for all three "Wacken Rocks" festivals! The warm-up for the legendary Wacken metal festival kicks off on May 30 in Berlin's Spandau Citadel with the first of three "Wacken Rocks" festivals. "Wacken Rocks Berlin" offers fans acts and artists like DER W, VOLBEAT, HEAVEN SHALL BURN and D.A.D.

Then, at the end of July, the metal world divides up into two camps: the more than 70,000 lucky ones who will rock the earth on site at the 20th Wacken Open Air in Wacken, and the global metal community who will be attending remote via the biggest online metal live stream ever. Because the second piece of good news is that just as in 2008, the music portal Rockalarm.de will be broadcasting the festival exclusively on the Internet in collaboration with Tempodome.

The transmission begins in the morning and goes on until the early morning. Gigs happening simultaneously on two separate stages will be filmed and broadcast one after the other. In addition to experiencing the concerts in top sound and picture quality, online fans will also be able to chat, vote and headbang in their own four walls. And the virtual road to the festival is well paved too: Tickets for the big weekend are on sale for various prices at www.eventim.de/wacken. The three-day pass guarantees at least 40 hours of live programme and costs 6.90 euros until May 15 ("Early Metalheadz" ticket), 10.90 euros from May 15 May to July 15 ("Wacken Rulez" ticket) and 15.90 euros from then on ("Headbangers Heaven" ticket).

Fans who still have the energy to rock on will then be served the ultimate heavy metal deal at the end of August: The double festival "Wacken Rocks Seaside" and "Wacken Rocks South" will be on almost simultaneously and with identical line-ups in Aurich (August 28-30) and in Rieden-Kreuth (August 27-29). Here, metal fans who couldn't get a ticket for Wacken, or who simply can't get enough, can finish off the festival year with acts like IN EXTREMO, DER W, EDGUY, DORO, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, U.D.O., STRATOVARIUS and many many more.

The organizers of the Wacken Open Air have joined forces again as they did last year to offer the live stream of the festival together: CTS Eventim AG, Europe's ticketing market leader, is handling the live stream tickets; the interactive live stream specialist Tempodome.com is responsible for the Internet broadcast; and Rockalarm.com, the portal for all fans of hard rock, will be presenting the stream exclusively on its web site.

"We are very happy that the organisers of the Wacken Open Air have entrusted us with the live Internet broadcast of the festival together with Tempodome and Rockalarm. We invite all metal fans around the world to jump into the biggest virtual mosh pit the world has ever seen!" says Malte Blumenthal, New Media vice president at CTS Eventim AG and CEO of Tempodome.com.

"In 2009 we'll be everywhere and online with the entire world," adds Holger Hübner, partner in the Wacken organizer ICS Festival Service. "The Wacken Rocks festivals and the Wacken Online live stream will be rocking the web again this year!"

The exact schedule for the Wacken Online live stream will be published in the weeks to come.

SLASH On 'American Idol' Appearance: Producers 'Offered Me Freedom To Do It However I Wanted' - May 1, 2009
VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash has commented on his "mentor" appearance next week during "Rock Week" on "American Idol", the annual reality show and singing competition. Slash wrote on his MySpace page, "As you may or may not know, the producers for 'American Idol' have asked me to be the mentor for 'Rock Week' next week. I was reluctant at first, but they offered me the freedom to do it however I wanted. More importantly, there are a few singers this year who are really impressive. It's the first time any 'American Idol' lineup has really caught my attention."

Slash added, "The approach I'm taking is different than usual on the show and I'm going to make this as rock and roll an 'American Idol' as possible. Wish me luck!"

Previous stars who have mentored hopefuls on the show include Mariah Carey and Neil Diamond, while Jon Bon Jovi has mentored "Rock Week."

Slash has also posted a new update on his solo album, which he is in the process of recording with various guest vocalists appearing on different tracks. He wrote, "Things are going great in the studio. We are officially past the halfway point, with some really cool collaborations coming up in the days and weeks ahead."

Ozzy Osbourne and AVENGED SEVENFOLD frontman M. Shadows are two of the vocalists confirmed to appear on Slash's record.

The guitarist said there are eight songs still to record, and also posted some working song titles, including "We're All Gonna Die", "These Last Words", "Crucify The Dead" and "Beautiful, Dangerous".

Slash has recruited ex-NINE INCH NAILS drummer Josh Freese and former JANE'S ADDICTION bassist Chris Chaney to play on the record.

KK Comments On New Golf Course

U.K.'s BirminghamPost.net reports that JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing is piling a big part of his fortune into a magnificent golf course around the mansion he bought near Bridgnorth.

K.K. bought Astbury Hall, five miles outside Bridgnorth, in the most beautiful Shropshire countryside you could imagine.

That was in 1985 and the 300-acre estate supported a large herd of prime milking cows.

But whenever K.K.'s eyes roved the rolling land outside his lounge window he dreamed of creating a golf course of a quality to match his own meticulous standards.

"I've played golf all over the world on some of the best golf courses and I want a course to match those," he said.

"I'm not after the £20-a-day-including-lunch market. It takes a lot of money, and I mean a lot of money, to provide a great golf course but as long as I can attract enough money to pay for it I'll be happy."

"I'm not cutting corners. I'm aiming at golfers who are passionate about the game and appreciate five-star golf and a five-star clubhouse."

Pyromania and Andrenalize Reissue Details

DEF LEPPARD, Britain's greatest arena rock band, is set to release deluxe editions of the classic albums "Pyromania" and "Adrenalize" on June 8 (U.K.) / June 9 (world) / June 16 (North America). The band also headline Dublin's O2 Arena on Friday, June 12 and headline the U.K.'s Download festival on Sunday, June 14.

Having sold over 65 million albums worldwide since their debut release in 1980 and proved themselves one of rock music's hardest working and consistently powerful live bands (playing to over 50 million fans in the last 15 years alone), DEF LEPPARD's timely deluxe editions are a must for any discerning music fan.

DEF LEPPARD remains one of only five rock groups who can claim two separate original 10-million-plus-selling albums in the U.S. ("Pyromania" being one of them). The others are THE BEATLES, LED ZEPPELIN, PINK FLOYD and VAN HALEN.

Both deluxe editions will feature deluxe digipack gatefold packaging with expanded booklets containing rare and previously unseen photographs, comprehensive sleeve notes telling the story behind each album and include images of rare single covers and memorabilia from the period. Liner notes come from Rolling Stone's David Fricke.

"Pyromania", DEF LEPPARD's third album originally released in 1983, was the album that took the band to the global stage. Produced by Robert "Mutt" Lange, the album sold over 10 million copies in the USA alone and spawned the huge singles "Photograph", "Rock Of Ages" and "Foolin'". The deluxe edition features a remastered version of the original album and a bonus disc of a previously unreleased 15-track show from The Forum in Los Angeles in 1983.

The full track listing follows:

"Adrenalize", DEF LEPPARD's fifth studio album from 1992, followed the enormous "Hysteria" (released in 1987) and cemented the band as the dominant arena rock band. The album was recorded following the tragic death of guitarist Steve Clark — with Phil Collen recording all guitar parts — and dedicated to his memory. The album featured huge singles such as "Let's Get Rocked" and "Make Love Like A Man" and debuted at No. 1 in both the U.K. and USA (and went on to sell over 7 million copies worldwide). The album was produced by DEF LEPPARD and Mike Shipley with Robert "Mutt" Lange as executive producer. Toni Iommi Comments On The Devil You Know

Gary Graff of Billboard.com reports: "The Devil You Know" is either the first album by HEAVEN & HELL or the third studio set from the third lineup of BLACK SABBATH. Either way, guitarist Tony Iommi says there's much more where that came from.

"There were loads of ideas," Iommi tells Billboard.com. "We've got enough to make another album if we wanted. We probably wouldn't use that stuff again, but we had more than enough" for "The Devil You Know". Iommi says the remaining material are "ideas — a verse or a riff, lots of bits, really." But he adds that with "The Devil You Know" just coming out Tuesday, HEAVEN & HELL isn't close to thinking about a next album.

"We're gonna be pretty tied up in touring for a bit," Iommi says, "and then when it comes to what we're gonna do afterwards, I don't know — but I'm sure we'll sort that out."

Geoff Tate Interview

QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate recently spoke to Goldmine contributor Bryan Reesman about the inspiration behind and making of their new album "American Soldier", finding new ways to make money in the music biz, golfing with Doc McGhee, and his wine brand, Insania. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On "American Soldier" being the first release in the band's 28-year history on which Michael Wilton played all of the guitars:

"There wasn't anybody there to say, 'Ah no, let's do it like this instead.' He really got to follow his vision. He didn't have to compromise on the guitar end, which is nice."

On the QUEENSRŸCHE songwriting dynamic:

"We definitely let it flow, but we definitely have the committee, which is myself, Eddie [Jackson, bass], and the producer that we're working with [at the time]. (In this case, Jason Slater with Kelly Gray.) Eddie and I are probably the ones in the band that care the most about what's happening and police everybody and make sure everybody's doing what they need to be doing, given that we allow them the freedom to express themselves. But we reserve the final call for deciding what the deep end is. Somebody has to put a marker down that says it's 'six feet deep here' by the poolside. Somebody has to got to write that in, so that's mostly my job: 'That solo is really cool, so let's ask some questions. Does it fit the mood of the song? Does it make you want to cry? Does it show that you can play guitar really fast?' We all have to feel fine with the answer."

On "Operation: Mindcrime II" selling approximately 150,000 copies domestically compared to the original "Mindcrime", which sold more than a million:

"We don't make any money selling records anymore. Very few people do. We still love doing it and still do it, but we do it differently. Money comes from other places. It's not just showing up; you've got to go look for it and figure out ways of making money."

"I remember in 1999 I was at this celebrity golf tournament, and the team I got assigned to had Doc McGhee, who is a pretty well-known band manager. Doc is a very smart man, and I said, 'Doc, what's happening to the business? What's happening to the music industry?' He was puffing on a big old cigar and said in a very grandfatherly type [of] delivery, 'Well, boy, it's changing.' I said, 'Yeah, I'm really concerned. Record sales seem to be plummeting, and there's all this downloading going on. What's the industry doing to stop that?' He said, 'The whole industry is doing absolutely nothing. The whole thing is going to go in the toilet.' 'What are we going to do?' 'Well, we're going to find other ways of making it work. I just read this really cool book and you've got to check it out. It's called 'Who Moved My Cheese?'"

"You can't stay in one place and expect to make a living in that same place all your life. It doesn't work that way. You've got to go where the food is. You've got to go where the money is. And you've got to go where the supplies are. So it was actually really good advice, and I thank him for that. It definitely made me look at what we do and try to modify it so we could make a living. And we are. We do very well considering the economy and the state of our industry."

On how finding new avenues of expression and new ways to reinvent oneself comes from determination and passion:

“Believe it or not, people are multidimensional. Their interests lie in other areas besides what they do for a living or perhaps what they are famous for. You pursue those things with passion. Say you like real estate. You're fascinated by the numbers and figuring out the deals, and you like the art of the deal and cutting deals with people. You start going into that and having some success because you throw yourself into it. Say you love fine dining and Bordeaux-style wines. That's me, baby. I love it.

"I think that's the key to life. Someone once told me if you want to change your life, lean in that direction [of interest]. Start focusing on it and looking at it and understanding it, and pretty soon you'll be doing it and having success at it."

Sam Dunn Comments on Flight 666

Mike Devlin of the Canwest News Service recently conducted an interview with directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Films Inc., creators of "Iron Maiden: Flight 666", the feature-length documentary film which follows the IRON MAIDEN bandmembers on the first leg of their "Somewhere Back In Time World Tour" in February and March of 2008.

"This film was way harder than we expected," said Dunn, 35. "I think we went into it with the assumption that because we were focusing on a specific band and not an entire genre of music that it was going to be easier. It wasn't — at all. In terms of piecing together the story and establishing rhythm, it was a totally different challenge for us."

The filmmakers shot 500 hours of live performances and behind-the-scenes footage, which the band's crew brushed aside as if it were nothing. "They said we weren't hard enough," McFadyen, 40, recalled with a laugh.

"Being out on a tour like this, the anxiety you feel is that you might miss a golden moment," McFadyen added. "It was all-hands-on-deck. We shot each concert with five cameras, and in between shows, whether we were on the plane or in a police escort going to the hotel, we could have any number of four cameras going at once."

The film was financed by the band, yet Dunn and McFadyen still think they captured a side of their lives never before seen on film.

"It's a very visceral journey with IRON MAIDEN on this massive global tour," Dunn said. "We wanted to make a film MAIDEN fans could be proud of and give some insight into the band that they've never had before."

Klause Meine Interview

Deutsche Welle
recently conducted an interview with SCORPIONS frontman Klaus Meine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

Deutsche Welle: Why have you stayed in Hanover? Many stars choose to move to LA or New York, yet you have chosen to stay in a relatively small German city.

Klaus Meine: The most important thing is to have a place you can come back to, where your roots, family and friends are. Those are things you can't transplant. We're cosmopolitan and have been traveling around the world for so many years. Wherever we are, the music helps us to feel connected and we never really feel like strangers, whether we're in Siberia or the Amazon. But it's really important to be able to come back to the place where your roots are, where your family and friends are.

Deutsche Welle: You recently received an Echo music award for your life's work. Does that make you feel old?

Klaus Meine: No, not at all. We're very honored. The Echo is a very important award and it's a big honor to receive one. We don't see it as a final cadence, but rather as an incentive, or motivation to keep playing for our fans in the coming years and to do that which has kept us going for so many years - that is, living our dream of making rock music.

Deutsche Welle: What are you currently working on?

Klaus Meine: We're working in the studio at the moment and preparing a new project. After a very turbulent 2008 with 60 shows in 22 countries, we're now trying to breathe a bit and charge our batteries — but also to be creative.

We're working on new songs that will hopefully come out towards the end of the year. That's really a lot of fun, after doing all those concerts.

Deutsche Welle: "Wind of Change", one of your best-known songs, became something of hymn for political change in eastern Europe. Was the song conceived as something of an ode to perestroika?

Klaus Meine: Of course not. When you write a song, you might have a certain feeling about it, but you can never be sure how a song is going to develop and what will become of it - if it will become a Top Ten hit, a number one hit, or in this case even an international hit that became like a hymn to the end of the Cold War for many people from East and West. Something like that can't be imagined or planned.

The only thing I did was try to express in the music all the emotions and everything we experienced in 1988 and 1989. We really had the feeling that the world was changing before our eyes — at the latest in August 1989 in Moscow. We had the feeling that the Cold War could be over soon, but of course no one thought that the Berlin Wall would fall just a few months later and that so much in our own country, Germany, and in eastern Europe would change. So this song has a particularly special story, which goes way beyond just being a "hit."

It's a nice feeling to know that the song touched so many people and, for many, will always be associated with these historical events.

Geezer Butler Discusses "The Devil You Know"

Justin Donnelly conducted an interview with legendary heavy metal bassist Geezer Butler (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH) on Friday, April 17. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the writing and recording process for HEAVEN & HELL's debut album, "The Devil You Know":

"All together, it took about twelve weeks to write 'The Devil You Know'. We seriously started laying down the ground work on the new album about last May, where we did about six weeks worth of writing. We then took a break and went out on tour for a month in the U.S. (The 'Metal Masters' tour), before we came back, and did another six weeks writing. That was about it. We had finished writing the album in around twelve weeks. I think we had another couple of ideas and songs that we were working on, but they weren't as strong as the ten songs that appear on the album, so we didn't pursue them any further. We felt that ten was a good number of tracks, so we left it at that. Once we had finished writing, we went right into rehearsals, and played everything live so that we got to know the songs really well. All the bass runs, the drums rolls and all that kind of stuff were worked out during the rehearsal sessions. So when we got into the studio, it took us about three weeks to put down the tracks, and around a month to mix the album. It was a really quick process for us, because usually it takes us fucking ages to record an album. So we were all pretty happy with the studio experience this time around."

On the album title, "The Devil You Know":

"Everybody was asking me if I had any ideas for the title of the album. So I got a few titles together, and that was the one that everybody seemed to like. So you can say that I was the one responsible for coming up with 'The Devil You Know'. The meaning behind the title is really quite simple. Everybody still calls us and sees us as BLACK SABBATH. So even though we call ourselves HEAVEN & HELL, we're still very much the devil you know in the sense that we're still BLACK SABBATH. That's the story behind that."

On the addition of the numbers twenty-five and forty-one on either side of the band's familiar winged demon logo on the front cover of the HEAVEN & HELL album:

"I've seen tons of explanations on the forums! Some of them have been really quite funny! (Laughs) But the real meaning behind the numbers is quite simple. We've had the winged demon logo for a long time, and the record company wanted to use that logo once again on the new album. So I thought that rather than do the same thing once again, I decided that we needed to do something a little different. So I came up with a verse from the bible. It's from the gospel according to Matthew, chapter twenty-five, verse forty-one. The verse goes, 'Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels!' It's about those who sit at the left hand side of God who are cast down into hell. That's all."

On HEAVEN & HELL's tourng plans:

"The tour starts on May 5th in South America and Columbia. That should be interesting. We then go from South America to Russia, and then we'll be playing a lot of the European summer festivals. That will include some gigs in Germany and France as well. And then I think we're back in the U.S. in August. Obviously with a new album, we'll be playing some new songs on this tour. We start rehearsals tomorrow, so in the lead up to that, I've been listening to the album again and again. At this moment, I really like 'Follow The Tears'. It's a track that's taken a few listens for me to really appreciate. It's really grown on me a lot. I really like 'Eating The Cannibals' as well now. That wasn't one of my favorites before, but that's come up in my estimation as well. So we'll be playing at least four songs off the new album. Well at least for South America and Europe anyway. We'll also be including tracks like 'Time Machine' (from 'Dehumanizer') into the set this time around, because we didn't get to play that last time we were on tour. I think it's really good to vary the set list from tour to tour. I think that if there wasn't a new album from us, we wouldn't have bothered touring. But with a new album behind us, it does give us something new to work with. And it's also more of a challenge too, especially when it comes to trying to remember everything again! (Laughs) It gets a little difficult at my age! (Laughs) At the moment, we're just seeing how things go, so we've only booked shows up until September. I think we'll probably see this year out, and then maybe do a few things next summer. After that, I think that will be it. We'll just have to wait and see what's happening at the time. That's the good thing about this band. I think when you're not planning something, it's always a surprise when something good does happen. But hopefully the album will do well for us, and we'll be able to revisit a lot of the places we played a couple of years ago, including Australia. I really do hope we get back down there! I love it down there."

God Seed Dvd In The Works

Video footage of GOD SEED (formerly known as the Gaahl-fronted of GORGOROTH) performing the song "Teeth Grinding" on July 25, 2008 at the Hortensfestivalen in Horten, Norway can be viewed below (clip shot by Harald Sleetrød). This track is a preview of footage that will be used on the forthcoming GOD SEED DVD, which is currently in the works.

GOD SEED's Gaahl (vocals) and King (bass) entered the studio on August 25, 2008 in the their hometown of Bergen, Norway to begin recording eight new tracks composed by the bassist for an as-yet-untitled new album, due later in the year via Indie Recordings. Along with Gaahl, King and Frost (SATYRICON) on drums, the band's full recording lineup includes Teloch (guitar) and Ice Dale (guitar). ENSLAVED's Herbrand Larsen once again produced the group in the studio.

In a recent interview with the Imhotep webzine, King stated about the band's name, "GOD SEED represent a more spiritual side to us than what GORGOROTH would. 'God Seed' is also the title of a track from our last album released under the 'GORGOROTH' banner and in that respect it symbolizes what is brought from the past. GOD SEED represents the will to grow; the will to be the super man so to speak. I think it's a suitable name for what we will represent in the future. I am also aware of the fact that we use the word God in the name. It will challenge the weak minded in the respect that we in the past used the word Satan a lot, but it's all about the same thing. The God within man and the God within nature. I never believed in a Christian force named Satan. I believe in the God within man."

Release Date for "Brütal Legend" Video Game

Joe Satriani Interview

Robert Gray of Ultimate-Guitar.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Joe Satriani as part of a series entitled "Hit The Lights." Topics of discussion included CHICKENFOOT's formation, the group's debut album, "Soap On A Rope" and "Down the Drain", touring Europe, and the man's impending copyright case against COLDPLAY. Several excerpts from the interview follow below:

On how CHICKENFOOT came together:

"I've known Sammy (Hagar, ex-VAN HALEN vocalist) for quite a long time, and we live in the same area. For a short period, we were actually part of a group together called PLANET US. He called me roughly a year and a half ago, and asked me to join him onstage just for fun. We jammed at the end of one of his Las Vegas shows, and that was really the beginning of the CHICKENFOOT experience. Chad (Smith, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer), Mike (Michael Anthony, ex-VAN HALEN bassist) and myself all just thought we would jam, and have a good time, though it turned out to be profoundly good. We looked at each other onstage, and said, 'Wow, we should be a group. What will we do about that?' We took it from there. We promised each other that we should write some tracks, should get together, and should see if we could take things towards the next step. For roughly nine months, we pursued this here and there, but then we finally put our feet down, and said, 'OK, let's enter the studio, and pursue this for real.'"

On CHICKENFOOT's name:

"I think it was just a goofy code name. We had to call ourselves something, and thought about possible names in the meantime. We thought of clever names, though I never thought any name was as good as CHICKENFOOT. (laughs) CHICKENFOOT is just a name which is so eerie, yet at the same time, is perfect. I wasn't surprised when the public overwhelmed us somewhat by just constantly referring to us as CHICKENFOOT. The name just stuck, I guess."

On whether a music video will be recorded for CHICKENFOOT's debut album:

"We have to film some videos. I've noticed that in my schedule, a video shoot will occur during May. I don't know which track that music video will be filmed for, though such things have to be put into place. 'Chickenfoot' will generate a couple of tracks worth of videos."

On whether a second CHICKENFOOT album will be recorded:

"I really hope so — I could see CHICKENFOOT recording three to four albums."

On where his copyright case against COLDPLAY is currently at:

"Our respective lawyers are talking to one other, and trading papers. There's much protocol which needs to be followed. These types of cases tend to drag on, and with very little interesting news for months and months (laughs). None of us are meant to discuss any of the really interesting aspects, so all I can say is that the case is still ongoing."

On COLDPLAY winning a Grammy for "Viva la Vida":

"I'm happy for the group, and in a very weird way, I was happy to hear my melody being celebrated. However, I was slightly confused that NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc.), the organisation which handles the Grammy Awards, would even consider nominating a track which they knew was heavily contested. These are the people who voted for MILLI VANILLI, though it isn't really their job, I suppose."

MORE of a Retro look?
JUDAS PRIEST 'Going Retro With The Look Of The Band' On 'British Steel' Anniversary Tour - Apr. 17, 2009
British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their classic album "British Steel" this summer (it was originally issued in April 1980) by performing the LP in its entirety for the very first time ever live on stage! In addition they will be playing some old favorites. Vocalist Rob Halford told Noisecreep, "It's like suddenly, thirty years have come upon us and we're about to celebrate. The album's technical anniversary is April of next year, but want to start the party early."

Halford added, "In today's economy, all artists have to think of something to do differently. We decided that this would be a great opportunity to do something that PRIEST has never done before, which is to play an album in its entirety. The band and the name 'JUDAS PRIEST' have both been around since 1969, so it is our fortieth anniversary, too. We seem to be in a constant celebration mode!"

According to Halford, PRIEST will make the tour a full sensory experience by recreating the "look" from the era during which they recorded the album. "We're going retro with the look of the band," Halford told Noisecreep. "In the tradition of PRIEST, we were often credited with kicking off the denim, leather, studs, whips and chains look, and there is a rich heritage with that. We want to bring that back with the stage set and other surprises."

Along with 1982's "Screaming for Vengeance" and 1990's "Painkiller", "British Steel" has long been considered one of metal's all-time classics. It was with this release that PRIEST truly broke through to the masses, with a pair of tracks that have become fixtures on rock radio — the enduring anthems "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight". But like all classic albums, there is not a single weak track detected on "British Steel", as evidenced by such standouts as the perennial concert highlight, "Metal Gods", as well as "Rapid Fire", "Grinder", "United" and "The Rage", among others.

Produced by Tom Allom, "British Steel" was recorded at the Tittenhurst Park in England — which is a mansion owned at the time by former THE BEATLES member Ringo Starr, and previously owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In 2001, the album was remastered and reissued with extra bonus tracks, and also was the subject of an in-depth study as part of the popular "Classic Albums" DVD series.

"British Steel" original track listing:

01. Rapid Fire
02. Metal Gods
03. Breaking the Law
04. Grinder
05. United
06. You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise
07. Living After Midnight
08. The Rage
09. Steeler

JUDAS PRIEST — singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis — remain as popular as ever to this day, confirmed once and for all upon the release of 2008's "Nostradamus", which became their highest-ever charting album in the U.S. Two years earlier, the group was the inaugural inductees into the "VH1 Rock Honors". The forthcoming summer dates with WHITESNAKE are surely not to be missed by metalheads from coast to coast, especially now that fans will be reintroduced up close and personal to the mighty "British Steel".

Megadeth Update

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has issued the following update:

"This week has been fantastic! [Producer] Andy Sneap is back at the helm in Vic's Garage [MEGADETH's recording studio in San Marcos, California] and it is such a natural thing to see Andy here with me, that I am thinking of trying to find him an American supermodel that will marry him and spend the rest of their lives in San Diego make records for me and making whoppee for Android!

"Seriously, though, I love working with Andy. I have had some greats over the years, and Andy is one of them. We have been making some serious soulful and aggressive vocal performances.

"Now, let me tell you about Chris Broderick's [MEGADETH guitarist] soloing!

"This guy is like Tony Montana. I have never ever heard a guitar player this good. Sorry, Marty [Friedman, ex-MEGADETH guitarist], I try to keep you in the fans' memory, but they are going to have a hard time once they hear Chris. I mean, we all worked hard to get Chris to where he is right now, but nothing that I could have done, and I mean very little, if not zero was contributed by me. Chris is a genius, a virtuoso, a master, and I am the proudest I have ever been in my musical life right now.

"Even Justis [Dave's son] said, 'He stomps Marty Friedman, dad.' What a blessing to have such a cool son!!!

"I have to get going. I have a crazy day today again. I need to finish the song I was singing yesterday called 'This Day We Fight'. This was influenced by the 'Lord of the Rings'. I am also in the middle of finishing up a lyric this morning called tentatively, 'How The Movie Ends'. We’ll see if the title sticks by the time the disc is finished."

MEGADETH's new album is tentatively due in September via Roadrunner Records.

Mustaine revealed during a recent interview that MEGADETH is in talks to play some shows with SLAYER later in the year. No further details are currently available.

Geezer Butler Comments On New Heaven & Hell Cd

HEAVEN & HELL/BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler has told Decibel magazine that working with singer Ronnie James Dio is a hell of a lot easier than working with Ozzy Osbourne. "Ronnie's a songwriter in his own right — he's got tons of ideas," the bassist said. "Whereas Ozzy... in the old days, he'd come up with a vocal line and I'd write the lyrics. Ronnie is 100 percent involved in both the musical side and the vocal side, and he writes his own lyrics as well."

Ozzy never took Butler's musical ideas seriously, either. "If we were with Ozzy and I came in with the killer riff of all time, Ozzy wouldn't even think of doing it because I'm not the guitarist and that's the way he thinks," Butler said. "When we tried to do a SABBATH album in 2001, we all gave each other CDs of our riffs or song ideas. Ozzy didn't even listen to mine. Because I'm not a guitarist, he felt I shouldn't be playing guitar. That's why it was so bloody hard to write anything."

Geezer Butler on HEAVEN & HELL's debut CD, "The Devil You Know": "If we'd written this album with Ozzy, we'd still be working on the first track."

The contrast between Ozzy and Dio comes into even sharper focus on tour. "It was great being with Ozzy on the road," HEAVEN & HELL/BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi enthuses. "We had a great time and we still will have hopefully at some point, but with Ronnie it's a lot different, because we go out and we know exactly what we're gonna be doing. With Ozzy, we didn't really know. It was touch and go sometimes on some of those early shows, whether he was gonna turn up, if he'd be able to sing, if his voice was gone, or what. We'd have to cancel shows, which Geezer and myself really hated. But with Ronnie, we've never cancelled a show. He'd have to be seriously, seriously ill before we cancelled a show."

Flight 666 Release Details

"Iron Maiden: Flight 666", the feature-length documentary film which follows the IRON MAIDEN bandmembers on the first leg of their "Somewhere Back In Time World Tour" in February and March of 2008, will be released on extended Blu-ray and DVD formats, alongside a double-CD soundtrack album and limited edition double-vinyl picture disc. It will be available Monday, May 25 on EMI Records in Europe, and Tuesday, June 9 on EMI Records Canada and UMe in the USA.

For "Iron Maiden: Flight 666", IRON MAIDEN was accompanied everywhere by award-winning documentary makers Banger Productions from Toronto in Canada, who have received international critical acclaim for their previous movies "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" and recently "Global Metal". Producer/presenter Sam Dunn and his team bring an intimate, behind-the-scenes view of this remarkable journey, with a close look at the logistics involved and following Team Maiden in the cockpit, on the plane and on and offstage, getting to the heart of this global adventure of a band that has very rarely even let cameras backstage before.

Shot in high definition and with superb 5.1 surround sound, mixed by the band's producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley, "Flight 666" brings to the screen all the drama, excitement and hysteria that followed the band around the world every time Ed Force One (the band's plane) touched down in a new country. The film documents the intensity of the punishing show schedules, the struggle with the time zones, the pressures of ensuring that every performance matched the energy of the many thousands of ecstatic and expectant fans from many cultural backgrounds, unusual angles from the spectacular shows... and, of course, the fun had on the way!

A special international "Iron Maiden Day" is being planned for April 21 with simultaneous showings of "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" in selected digital cinemas around the world.

As a very special bonus for the fans, MAIDEN has included a second disc of the entire set from the 2008 segment of this tour with the DVD (and as a long-play Blu-ray). Sixteen songs from sixteen different cities in eleven countries around the world, for the first time ever encompassing such varied places and cultures in one concert. (See full track listing below). In addition to a standard double DVD, EMI will release a special souvenir limited-edition deluxe DVD with 30-page booklet. The soundtrack audio version of the live show will be available on two CDs, as a limited-edition vinyl set with two picture discs, and a digital download especially for those fans who do not have DVD access or just want to enjoy the show as a great live album. All are lavishly packaged as an ultimate memento of a tour to remember!

To recognize the global phenomenon of MAIDEN, the Blu-ray/DVD are also subtitled in Hindi, Japanese, Dutch, German, Spanish, Brazilian, French, Italian, Portuguese and Swedish.

Comments band manager Rod Smallwood; "It's been a mammoth undertaking. From the first twinkle in Bruce's eye it's taken about three years to put band, crew and equipment in a giant flying 'splitter bus', to go through all the long and tiresome prep and safety regulations and planning, to the actual filming and of the tour itself, through to post production and right up to putting together all these items in the very best quality possible for our fans."

"It's great that with Maiden Day on Tuesday April 21, we can give our fans the opportunity of seeing this digitally on big screen in Hi Def with the full-on 5.1 sound experience with other fans around them. It was also very rewarding that it has won the prestigious SXSW Film Festival Award for Best Music Documentary.

"The 'Somewhere Back in Time Tour' reached almost 2 million fans in 39 countries and, if there is one thing l know from managing MAIDEN all these years, it's that our fans are not happy to wait too long, so we are delighted that EMI (Ume USA) are rush-releasing the DVD. This closes the chapter on an absolutely brilliant experience delving into the past for the band, myself and my team, the crew and hopefully all of you fans out there. After the summer and some deserved time off, we will concentrate on the 'new,' with the band starting to put together material for a brand new studio album due sometime later in 2010. And, of course, after that we will look forward to seeing all our fans again!!"

The film "Flight 666" is being released in the following manner:

* Long-play Blu-ray with "Flight 666: The Film" and "Flight 666: The Concert" (215 minutes)

* Double DVD

- Disc One: "Flight 666: The Film" (112 minutes)
- Disc Two: "Flight 666: The Concert" (104 minutes)

* Plus limited-edition deluxe double DVD of the above with special packaging and 30-page booklet

* "Flight 666: The Original Soundtrack" album - Double CD*

* "Flight 666: The Original Soundtrack" album - Limited Edition Double Vinyl Picture Disc

Bruce Dickinson Talks About Performing

Sophie Heawood of U.K.'s Times Online reports: What dawns on you, while watching IRON MAIDEN's live show, with its bombast and pyramids and 20ft robots, is how curiously lacking in aggression it is. Passion, yes, but it's not a fight. (A roadie tells me that he's been working for MAIDEN for 30 years and has never seen a punch-up.) Singer Bruce Dickinson agrees. "Oh no, it's not fighting. It's not a big f***-you at all. That's a pointless waste of energy. There is the potential on the one hand for rage and chaos, or passion and exultation on the other — and that's my choice: to try to levitate all these people who have come along. And I don't do it — they do it themselves — but you have to sort of provide the framework."

He says that he began performing in small clubs, and learnt from one of his childhood heroes, Ian Gillan, the DEEP PURPLE singer, how to bring your audience in. "I said to him one night, 'What's your secret?' And he said, 'Always look 'em in the eyes.' I thought, OK, I'll try it — but how far can I actually see? And I discovered it was entirely possible to look right the way to the back of a show and see somebody. I thought, well, if you grab that person, then everybody around them suddenly goes 'Wow' and you energize that whole area suddenly. I started working that — in the end you can do it in stadiums."

Canadian metal legends VOIVOD have set set "Infini" as the title of their final album, due in North America on June 16 via The End Records and Germany on June 12 through Nuclear Blast (the rest of Europe is expected to receive the CD on June 15).

Regarding the album title, VOIVOD drummer Michel "Away" Langevin said, "There were many titles thrown around, but I thought of 'Infini' and everybody liked it. Also, it looks great in sci-fi fonts."

The track listing for the CD is as follows:

01. God Phones
02. From The Cave
03. Earthache
04. Global Warning
05. A Room With A View
06. Destroy After Reading
07. Treasure Chase
08. Krap Radio
09. In Orbit
10. Deathproof
11. Pyramidome
12. Morpheus
13. Volcano

Total running time: 57:57

The follow-up to 2006's "Katorz" will mark the second album in the band's 20-plus-year career that did not feature founding guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour working alongside his bandmembers in the studio. "Infini" will also mark the first VOIVOD album to feature Jean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault on bass since 1991's "Angel Rat" and their first release with D'Amour's replacement Dan Mongrain on guitar.

VOIVOD made its trimphant return to the stage on June 22, 2008 in front of 22,500 fans as part of the Heavy MTL festival at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The group was joined by original bass player Jean-Yves Theriault ("Blacky") for the first time in 17 years. Dan Mongrain from the Quebec band MARTYR, a good friend of the band, played guitar. Songs from the early catalogue were the focus for the Heavy MTL set, including VOIVOD's cover of the PINK FLOYD classic "Astronomy Domine", which closed the show before the band took a bow center stage and shared a group hug.

Released in July 2006 on The End Records, "Katorz" was assembled, recorded and released by the band (drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, singer Denis "Snake" Belanger and former METALLICA bassist Jason "Jasonic" Newsted) and producer Glen Robinson using demos left by founding guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, who succumbed to colon cancer in August 2005. The CD has sold more than 10,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

VOIVOD won the "Best Metal/Hardcore Album" award for "Katorz" in September 2007 at the annual Quebec Independent Music Awards (GAMIQ) in Montreal, Quebec.

Newsted is still very much part of the VOIVOD family and did work with the band on the new record along with Jean-Yves Theriault and Eric Forrest. However, Newsted is unable to perform live at this point.

Geoff Tate Interview

FuryRocks
recently conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

FuryRocks: Can you tell us a little about Mike Stone's [guitar] departure?

Tate: When Chris DeGarmo, one of our founding members left in 1997, we decided to carry on with the second guitar position open and play with different people. It worked out really well for us, to play with people who bring a different perspective. It helps us to pull from different musical pallets. Mike is an amazing guitarist, writer, and vocalist. He had a real passion for pursing his own goals and starts his own band. He was also a great person to hang with. It's one thing to be a great musician who does the job well but it's important to have someone in the band who you want to spend time with. We are going to miss him and wish him the best of luck in his new project and future endeavors.

FuryRocks: Was it difficult to carry on when Chris left the band?

Tate: After Chris left, there were a few albums that we were really trying to find our legs. Chris was a major component to the band, he was the "go-to guy." He knew all the business of the band; he had the relationships with the record companies and management and was a major creative influence of the band. When he left, we struggled, we didn't know how we could carry on since he did so much and we had become accustom to the working situation. We had to reassign all the duties that Chris took care of to the rest of the band (laughing). We had to find where our strengths were and that took a while.

FuryRocks: What do you attribute the success and longevity of QUEENSRŸCHE to?

Tate: Tenacity (laughing). All of us have a passion for music which is what drew us together. We all have vast record collections and all like different styles of music which has been beneficial to us in the sense it has kept thing interesting from a creative standpoint. When you have that shared passion, it's easy to work together. You don't have to work that hard to manufacture things, because it's already there, you just have to let it happen. It's a magical combination that we all appreciate and are grateful for. We also find that life is pretty inspirational. You get to travel and meet people who provide us with so much input; there is never a dull moment and never a lack of material to write about. We meet so many people all the time and have interesting conversations that we can pull from to write a song or an album. Also, the fact is that we change our albums up quite a bit. Our fans never know what type of record we will put out and I think they find that interesting. They have watched the band evolve and change.

Slayer Members Comment On Albums

Sam Roudman of Filter magazine recently spoke to the four members of SLAYER for a lengthy interview which appears in its issue #35. An excerpt from the article on the "Reign In Blood" / "South Of Heaven" / "Seasons In The Abyss" years follows below.

"Reign in Blood":

Tom Araya (bass, vocals): On that first album [together], [producer Rick] Rubin made sure that he recorded. He wanted to duplicate what he was hearing.

Kerry King (guitar): It was the first time you actually heard SLAYER in its pure ferocity, and it made a big difference. One funny thing about that album is if it came out today, no one would give a shit. They'd say, "That's cool." But at the time it came out it made such a difference. People still reflect on that as a poignant time, where shit changed.

Jeff Hanneman (guitar): "Angel of Death" was a big problem. I remember getting a phone call after the album was done: Sony wasn't going to release it. I remember being at home, pissed, throwing things. What the fuck? I didn't think anything was wrong with "Angel of Death" or anything else we did, it's a documentary! There's no "Heil Hitler," or "white people rule," it's a documentary; grow up, people. It took months before they picked it up again. Finally, we got signed by a distributor.

"South of Heaven" / "Seasons in the Abyss":

Dave Lombardo (drums): I think "Heaven" is more slowed-down. "Reign in Blood" was played very fast, but that's the picture of that album. "South of Heaven" is just a whole different record; it has more color to it.

Tom Araya: We purposefully didn't want to do another fast album. But there are a lot of people now that say ["South of Heaven" is] an underrated record.

Kerry King: My problem with the record is that I never thought Tom should have sung as much as he did. That's not his fault; we all came to that decision. But looking back, after "South of Heaven", that's what I said going into "Seasons" — "I don't care if you got the melody, but you can't lose that ferocity in your voice…" There wasn't enough anger in the presentation. I think we combined the two with "Seasons"; like, "That's where it needed to be, that is the imprint of SLAYER from now, so it is written, so it is done!" [Laughs]

In the late '80s, with "Reign" and "South", and by the time we had "Seasons" happening, there were tons of bands doing it. It's like a recurring cycle; when something gets popular, record companies sign anything that sounds remotely like 'em, and it kills the genre.

Ronnie James Dio Writing Autobiography

According to U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine, legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, DIO) has begun writing his autobiography. It will "not be centered around myself so much as me telling my life story through the stories of those around me," he is quoted as saying.

Dio explained that he's fitting the writing around a hectic schedule with HEAVEN & HELL, which is scheduled to release its debut album, "The Devil You Know", later this month.

"Every time I feel I'm getting halfway there, another halfway comes along," he said. "But yes, I'm writing it and it's certainly going to be very, very interesting for people interested in the bands I've been in and the people I've played with.

"You have to have a focal point, and I guess that had to be me. It's an autobiography, but within it, I tell the stories that somehow explain a little bit what [former RAINBOW mastermind] Ritchie [Blackmore]'s like or [BLACK SABBATH's] Tony [Iommi]'s like or Geezer [Butler]'s like. I don't analyze them, but just in telling the tales I paint everyone in as good a light as possible. It's not a tell-all book."

According to Dio, anyone expecting to read about on-the-road debauchery and excesses will be disappointed. "I've tried to live my life on a very straight path,' he told Classic Rock. "I'm not Nikki Sixx [MÖTLEY CRÜE] or people who go over the edge. That's alluring to a lot of people, but I'm sure being a little bit different is alluring to some other people, too."

The as-yet-untitled book is tentatively due next year.

Thats pretty funny,I read this as well. Infernus should obviously have the name,(duh)...how could Gaahl possibly think that he would get Gorgoroth's name? Stupid. No worries for me,I only like Gorgoroth's first album "Pentagram" 1994 anyways!!  But hail to Infernus none the less!

Gorgoroth Band & Name Owned By Guitarist Infernos Now

GORGOROTH mastermind/guitarist Infernus (real name: Roger Tiegs) was interviewed late last week by Justin M. Norton of About.com. Infernus discussed his legal battle, the status of GORGOROTH's upcoming album and his thoughts about former bandmates Gaahl and King. Excerpts follow:

About.com: Do you feel vindicated by the decision?

Infernus: I am always more or less angry at someone or something: fellow co-workers, politics at practice here in Norway, the law system, God, and even a few ex-members now and then. But concerning the outcome of this case, which I won, I am of course happy. I am not really surprised about it, but I am content and happy.

This is not just a victory for common sense and reason, nor is it only a victory for me and my band. It is a victory for the music scene. This will set a standard in terms of legal issues in Norway, at least, so that musicians and artists who come up with a concept of their own can focus on what should be their main concern: the creative aspect of their life. People can feel safe not having to do tons of paperwork to be able to protect their ideas and immaterial belongings in case of future issues where, as in this case, there might come some seventh bass player and try to claim the name of a band he had no part in creating.

About.com: Did you ever consider abandoning the case and playing music under another name?

Infernus: Running a court case always represents some kind of a risk. I was not 100 percent sure I would win I have to admit, even though I knew I was right. I allied myself with some rather strong forces working in the same direction, so the outcome was more or less clear. I have problems understanding that the counterparts (King and Gaahl) might honestly have believed they could win a case like this, and it is still a mystery for me why they would not accept my offer not to take them to court. They should just have quit and found themselves another name and started their own band. But they had to do it the hard way, and we all know the outcome of that by now.

About.com: What is next for GORGOROTH now that the court case has passed? Will you finish up "Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt" and begin touring?

Infernus: I have been in studio rehearsing/arranging/doing pre-recordings for this album for more or less a year now. We are using the studio of my new drummer and co-producer Tomas Asklund in Sweden, Monolith Studio. We will work pretty effectively in the upcoming period to (finish) rehearsals for future live activities as well, when all the guys are here doing their part of the recording. We are looking at a mix in the end of June, then mastering in July. There will be an October release on Regain Records, the label I chose for GORGOROTH back in 2005, before the legal issues came up.

About.com: What will the new music sound like? Can we expect something in the vein of "Under The Sign of Hell" with Pest and Tormentor back in the band? You now have close to what many consider the classic GORGOROTH lineup back in place.

Infernus: I would like the listener to decide what it sounds like. It never, in my eyes, looks especially good having a musician or songwriter going on in an interview pestering people with his or her own personal opinions on topics like this. I can say we are working hard on it and are going to be able to stand behind this product upon release around October this year. It is time for some real metal.

The Birth of Slayer

Sam Roudman of Filter magazine recently spoke to the four members of SLAYER for a lengthy interview which appears in its issue #35. An excerpt from the article on the band's formative years follows below.

Tom Araya (bass, vocals): "This Top 40 band I was in was getting a new guitar player — a music teacher who Kerry [King, guitar] was a student of. When that guitar player got booted and was replaced by Kerry, then I got booted. That was right out of high school, in '79. I was working at the hospital and going to school to become a respiratory therapist. I got in contact with Kerry like a year later; he said he wanted to put a new band together."

Jeff Hanneman (guitar): "In '81, we started playing covers, and then I got into punk and that changed my perspective. I don't remember the specific bands because they were just backyard bands at parties, but it was just the speed and anger of punk… I don't know how to describe it. I don't write music; I don't read notes. [The punks] played dark riffs — whereas metal was more melodic, there were heavy riffs, heavy chord patterns; but punk was just…angry. It was fast, and right then and there I thought, 'Fuck listening to metal, this stuff is more interesting, it's more energetic.'"

Dave Lombardo (drums): "In the early days, the greatest thing we came across was mixing metal and punk together to create the SLAYER style. We were being influenced by bands like IRON MAIDEN, VENOM, MERCYFUL FATE and a lot of punk stuff, so it all grew from what we were being exposed to at the time."

Kerry King: "We were from L.A., and everybody said the Bay Area was where all the thrash was. We never understood the L.A. thing; why guys wanted to dress like girls, and why girls liked that — POISON, RATT, L.A. GUNS. We didn't get it. And so us dressing up in leather and spikes and chains and nails and Alice Cooper makeup for the first record was our way of rebelling and being the anti-L.A. Their subject matter was so safe; that might be part of what pushed us over the edge to be the opposite."

Hanneman: "My dad was in World War II and my two older brothers were in Vietnam, and when I was young I would hear them talk about all that stuff. Even though they weren't sitting around telling war stories, it would spill into conversation, which made it darker for me. If they were bragging about how many people they killed it probably wouldn't have been as interesting, but they were trying to keep it from the rest of the family and so I started to get into it. It was just a natural thing to write about.

"Not too long after the band started, my dad was cleaning out his closet and he had a bunch of medals he had taken off of dead Nazis, and he goes, 'You can have these; I was just going to throw them out.' I started to research what these medals meant, and it just snowballed. In a way, it actually helped SLAYER out; it started a controversy because everybody thought we were Nazis. Anybody who knew us knew we weren't, so we played along with it a little bit."

Bruce Dickinson Talks About Flight 666

U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine recently conducted an interview with IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson about "Iron Maiden: Flight 666", the feature-length documentary film which follows the IRON MAIDEN bandmembers on the first leg of their "Somewhere Back In Time World Tour" in February and March of 2008. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Metal Hammer: Film…tour documentaries are small, fan-based kind of thing…but the scale of this thing, it's a completely different beast…was that the intention?

Bruce: I don't know what it was intended to be because the…all we did was be in it.

Metal Hammer: No reservations about the movie?

Bruce: I probably had less than the other guys because I'm used to doing lots of interviews and things like that. Adrian [Smith, guitar] was a little wary but I think he kind of warmed to them because they were nice guys and they did just join in and became part of the crew. So, just as if somebody… we're all arsing around dressed as transvestite Scotsmen wearing Ken Dodd wigs and some of the crew got out their mobiles and started taking pictures, you don't say, "No pictures!" because they're your mates and everyone's having a laugh, so it was actually the same with the documentary crew, which could've been a dangerous thing if they'd decided to fuck us over…but it was their impressions telling the story.

Metal Hammer: The story of the movie is about the fans and their connection with the band, right?

Bruce: I think that is, by and large, the real story of MAIDEN. None of us go around courting celebrity for the sake of it. It is frankly, occasionally useful as a device to get attention for the band but it's only ever used very, very sparingly, even then. So really the story is about the band and the fans, because that's what's created everything. All the media that's been focused on MAIDEN over the last few years would be utterly meaningless if it wasn't for the fans responding to it.

Bruce on the live footage: "Well, they filmed enough of it! What's great is that they just used excerpts. I think there's an amazing atmosphere, and a fucking amazing live DVD that could come out of it. We never allowed anybody… I'm renowned for almost Ritchie Blackmore-esque hatred for cameramen on stage because I find it a real intrusion and you get locked into this fantasy world of music and visions and you're in the middle of being the Ancient Mariner and this fucking bloke's sticking his camera in your face and you just want to deck him. It's like, 'Get out of my dream!' So you really have to know somebody quite well to trust them. If I see McMurtrie's head sticking up above the parapet, I don't throw anything at it these days, but if I didn't know he was I'd murder him! So you really have to trust people who get up on stage with you because it's our little world."

Venom To Re-Issue "Black Metal + Live DVD"

British black metal pioneers VENOM are planning to release a special edition version of their "Black Metal" album later this year. According to the band, the new set will contain bonus tracks and a DVD of the "7th Date of Hell" video of VENOM performing live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, England in 1984.

On October 22, 2008, a two-album Japan-only cardboard sleeve reissue series from VENOM was made available via Universal Music featuring the following LPs:

* "Welcome To Hell" (1981)
* "Black Metal" (1982)

Each cardboard sleeve reissue features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD players).

"Hell", the new album from VENOM, was released in North America in September 2008 via Universal Music Enterprises. A promotional video for the CD can be viewed at this location.

VENOM made "Hell" available in a digipack edition via Nuclear Blast's mailorder featuring two bonus tracks — "In League With Satan" and "Burn In Hell" — and an inverted cross. Limited to 333 copies, it can be ordered here.

A complete track from "Hell" has been made available for streaming on the band's official web site. Check out the song "Straight To Hell" at this location. Streaming audio samples of eight songs from "Hell" are available here.

VENOM in 2007parted ways with guitarist Mykvs (a.k.a. Mike Hickey; ex-CARCASS, CATHEDRAL). "Personal unavoidable commitments in the U.S. have forced Mykvs to announce that he cannot commit 100% to VENOM's schedule," the band previously wrote in a statement. A new guitarist by the name of Rage has been drafted in to replace Mykvs.

Ratt Announce New Record Deal

Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records has officially announced the signing of a worldwide deal with Los Angeles hard rockers RATT. The band is set to begin recording its first new material since 1999's self-titled album this spring.

One of the most popular rock acts of the past 20 years, RATT's brand of guitar-driven melodic rock helped shape the L.A. metal scene. The band boasts a deep catalog of hits including smashes like "Round and Round", "Lay It Down", "You're In Love", "Lack of Communication" and "Wanted Man", which are beloved by fans the world over. The band has gone on to sell millions of albums worldwide. With 1984's mega-platinum debut "Out of the Cellar" celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the band is looking forward to starting a new chapter with new music to complement the impressive legacy they have established over two-plus decades.

"This deal is a great opportunity for us to get our new music to RATT fans worldwide," says frontman Stephen Pearcy. "We are super-excited about the new material!"

Over the past two years, RATT has toured the world in support of their releases "Tell The World - The Very Best Of Ratt" and their first-ever DVD, "Videos from the Cellar - The Atlantic Years". During this time, the current lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, Bobby Blotzer, Robbie Crane and Carlos Cavazo played shows in Australia, Colombia and Peru for the first time in their careers.

"The fans deserve the credit for making this happen. When we saw the band in concert and witnessed their passion and excitement, it was obvious that the time was right for RATT to make new music," says Tom Lipsky, Loud & Proud President.

Guitarist Warren DeMartini adds, "We look forward to working with our friend and veteran record exec Tom Lipsky."

The new album is set for a fall release and will be supported by a world tour.

Kiss Announce "First Ever Fan Tour"

KISS is celebrating 35 years of rockin' the world like no other band has ever done before. The legendary band, currently touring soccer stadiums of South America, announced from Brazil today that their upcoming U.S. and Canadian tour will be the world's first to put fans in charge of where their favorite artist plays. By partnering with Eventful, the leading social media company for events, fans will "Demand" where KISS will perform on their latest trek across the top-voted North American markets beginning this September. No matter where the fans say —from stadiums to cornfields — if there are enough votes, KISS will be there! And in order to keep the competition fair for smaller cities, final site selection will weigh population size versus total votes.

Today at the zero hour of exactly 3:00 p.m. EDT, an official video announcement by the band's Paul Stanley, Eric Singer, Tommy Thayer and Gene Simmons (see video at KISSonline.com) kicks off this first-ever promotion. Immediately following the video's debut run, fans across the U.S. and Canada can cast their votes at www.eventful.com/KISS to have their town included on the KISS 2009 North American tour. Fans will be able to vote, and check the tally of what cities are in the lead, 24/7 across the Web at the previous sites; as well as on KISS' MySpace and Facebook, Ticketmaster's KISS page, VH1Classic.com, and many more.

Even after garnering more than 30 gold and platinum records and in excess of 90 million albums sold worldwide, KISS continues to prove the band makes the fans their #1 priority.

"KISS has never followed the rules — we have always broken them. KISS has never listened to critics-we have always listened only to the fans," said Gene Simmons. "It's time to give back to the fans with bigger shows and longer set lists. And for the first time anywhere, we want our fans to tell us where they want us, and when."

Said Paul Stanley, "No band has ever given their fans the power to decide what cities they play, and no fans deserve it more than ours. We're leaving the next U.S. and Canadian tour up to the Army. When they stand up, they will be counted!"

Just for voting for their town, all KISS fans will have the opportunity to purchase pre-sale tickets prior to the general on-sale. In addition to joining in on the major campaigns launched by rock radio in each city, fans are also incentivized to create their own viral videos online, motivating their fellow residents to participate in casting votes for a KISS show in their city. City-specific "best-of" compilation reels of these videos will be shown on jumbo screens at venues before each concert.

On this upcoming tour, fans will be treated to a set of some of rock's greatest hits, including "Rock and Roll All Nite", "I Was Made for Lovin' You", "Detroit Rock City", "God Gave Rock & Roll to You" and "Shout It Out Loud", among many others. The band is currently recording its first new studio album in 11 years (produced by Paul Stanley).

Spinal Tap Announce World Tour (Sort of)

According to the MH website- 'Spinal Tap are back and will celebrate with a 'One Night Only' World Tour . Yep, you read that correctly.

Spinal Tap have announced a show at Wembley Arena on June 30th, being billed as a one-night world tour. The legendary 3-piece (and a drummer whose life will be no doubt be in danger) play the show to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of their legendary documentary, or rockumentary if you will, ‘This Is Spinal Tap’.

The practical question to raise at this point would surely be, are they going to play Stonehenge that night?

In addition to the return of Tap, The Folksmen (subject of the mockumentary A Mighty Wind) will serve as support on this one-night world tour.'

James Hetfield Interview

Seth Colter Walls of Newsweek.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Newsweek: How about this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame business? Is that really "metal?"

Hetfield: It certainly wasn't in my mind, even two years ago. Then we had the good fortune to go play and induct BLACK SABBATH, and that's when it hit me: hey, aren't we eligible? It is somewhat surreal. One of the greatest things is that we're still relevant, still enjoying each other's company, still making heavy music. We are going to make it as much of a family reunion as possible.

Newsweek: Have you invited Dave Mustaine, even though you and Lars Ulrich fired him?

Hetfield: I would have to say we cast the net very wide, including Mustaine. I want everyone possible to show up. You've seen the ridiculous drama, like with VAN HALEN, that totally messes everything up. I don't get it. This is a celebration of life and accomplishment, not by your means only.

Newsweek: Is it exhausting, keeping up the right image for the fans? You were widely mocked last year when a photo of you shopping at an Armani store surfaced. (See picture below.)

Hetfield: It's awesome. I welcome that. We've got such passion around METALLICA, making fun of us or completely worshiping. There's passion there, and that's what matters. When I'm holding my wife's bag in front of—

Newsweek: So it wasn't your bag? You weren't shopping at Armani?

Hetfield: It was not mine. But it really doesn't matter. It's summertime, and I've got flip-flops and shorts on. We're kicking it. That's what I wear. People's image of what you're supposed to be is really amazing. Maybe you're a full-on headbanger from Latvia and you just don't see me like that very often. Or even fans in America — they love to poke fun and rip you to shreds, but if you're laughing, they can't.

Newsweek: You recently met with ACRASSICAUDA, the Iraqi metal band who have been resettled as refugees in America (see video below). How was that?

Hetfield: I'm amazed by the fact that there was a heavy-metal band in Iraq, and that they got the attention. And that they have this passion, and society is crushing it, but they find a way to keep going. When they showed up [at our concert], it was a pretty big deal. At first they were cowering. They literally turned and put their faces against the wall. It was just a different culture. But I was open and outspoken and in their face, which is very unlike what they were able to do. And, man, within moments, though, they saw the love and they felt pretty comfortable. Handing over that guitar was a pretty big deal to me. Here's the key, open it. Welcome to America.

Scorpions To Record New Album Later This Year

According to a posting on the SCORPIONS fan site ScorpsNews.com, the German hard rock veterans will enter the studio in late 2009 to begin work on a new album for a 2010 release. It looks like they will be recording the new CD in their home country this time, but that could change.

The SCORPIONS will play 40 dates all around the world in 2009 starting tomorrow night (Friday, April 3) in France. The band's management is also said to be in talks with another major rock act about a possible joint tour of North America in 2010.

SCORPIONS' latest album, "Humanity - Hour 1", was produced by James Michael and co-produced by songwriter/producer Desmond Child, who has worked with such high-profile pop/rock artists as AEROSMITH, BON JOVI, ALICE COOPER, KISS, RICKY MARTIN, CHER, MICHAEL BOLTON and BONNIE TYLER.

The Best Buy edition of "Humanity - Hour 1" includes an exclusive track, "Cold". "Cold" was previously included on the Japanese pressing of the CD along with another bonus cut, a radio edit of "Love Will Keep Us Alive".

New Jon Olivia's Pain Album Planned

JON OLIVA'S PAIN drummer Christopher Kinder has issued the following update:

"JON OLIVA'S PAIN is currently in final negotiations with AFM Records for the release of our fourth CD (due out October 2009) and our first live DVD, to be filmed in early 2010. We are planning a two-hour show with a setlist consisting of the four JON OLIVA'S PAIN CDs as well as a healthy assault of SAVATAGE classics!

"We are very happy with our relationship and agressive promotion that AFM Records has consistently delivered... and we are sincerely greatful for their support and dedication!

"With regards to the upcoming CD... We have completed 90% of the arrangements for 11 songs plus two additional bonus tracks. This CD should prove to be much heavier and far more agressive overall than our previous releases. A few epic songs are always part of the equation, but we wanted to make a record that was more in line with 'Maniacal Renderings' meets 'Hall of Mountain King'.... and the current demos prove to be just that.

"We will begin recording at Morrisound Studios in July and deliver the record on time for an October release. Oliva continues to write at a feverish pace and he is hell bent on delivering one of his most agressive and powerful vocal performances to date!

"The upcoming European festival/club tour dates are almost complete. We are stoked to be hitting a number of countries that we have not yet performed in, including Turkey, Romania and Finland. This will be our busiest summer tour to date and a true testament to our increasing fan base who are supporting JON OLIVA'S PAIN and the rich SAVATAGE history with great enthusiasm."

For a list of upcoming shows, visit www.jonoliva.net.

JON OLIVA'S PAIN's latest album, "Global Warning", was released in the U.S. in May 2008 via Locomotive Records. The CD features a guest appearance by guitarist Ralph Santolla (OBITUARY, ex-DEICIDE, DEATH, ICED EARTH) on two songs: "Adding the Cost" and "You'll Never Know".

Bill Ward Talks About Sabbath Reunion

Original BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward will be interviewed by Ian Camfield of U.K.s Xfm Radio on Saturday, April 4 between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

If you are in U.K., you can listen to the show by tuning in to 104.9 FM on digital radio, or you can stream the program via the Internet at www.xfm.co.uk.

39 years after its 1970 release, BLACK SABBATH's "Paranoid" album is being re-released as a three-CD deluxe edition, featuring the original album, a quadraphonic mix and a disc full of instrumental and alternate versions.

Ward tells Shropshire Star: "There was some spare tape left, so we said, 'Let's see if we can get another song and we all went down the pub which is the best place to work — well, it was then — and when we got back Tony [Iommi, guitar] had got a really, really good riff. Tony and Geezer [Butler, bass] and myself just sat in and just started playing and it didn't take long at all to have the song with all its parts pretty much done. I think within the afternoon it was taken care of. Ozzy [Osbourne, vocals] had his jamming lyrics, almost rough stuff, as we jammed down the first things. It probably [was] pretty much in the ballpark, his melody's there. We did that with quite a lot of our songs and we would change that around until we reached the final album version."

Ward insists the door is not shut on the idea of a full-blown reunion of BLACK SABBATH's original lineup.

"I have an open mind when it comes to SABBATH," he tells Shropshire Star. "We just haven't done anything for the last three years. But the door's wide open as far as BLACK SABBATH is concerned.

"Playing, doing anything with the original band, that's where I would like to be."

He adds: "Ozzy and I have maintained our relationship, and I've maintained my relationship with the other fellas pretty much all the way through. Nobody's far from each other.

"I saw Oz on his birthday. We went to Vegas and that's the last time I saw him. But I actually spoke to him about three or four days ago. He's doing fantastic, he's doing really well."

Van Halen Debut To Be Re-Released On Vinyl

As part of their ongoing vinyl reissue series, Warner/Rhino on Tuesday (March 31) quietly released VAN HALEN's groundbreaking self-titled 1978 debut record on 180-gram vinyl.

One of the most explosive and accomplished hard rock albums ever produced, VAN HALEN's 1978 self-titled debut altered perceptions of what the guitar could do and it set the template for the sound of rock and roll for the next decade. From the instrumental blow-out of "Eruption" and the gritty pop of "Feel Your Love Tonight", to the strutting riff of "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" and the grandiose reworking of THE KINKS' "You Really Got Me", VAN HALEN amply demonstrates the drive, showmanship and musicianship that would turn them into rock revolutionaries!

"Van Halen" vinyl reissue details:

* Mastered from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Grey at Acoustech Mastering, using half-speed mastering for superior sound
* Pressed on high-quality 180-gram (180g) weight vinyl for longer life and superior sound
* Features all-original artwork and packaging

Most experts agree that the richness and depth of the original master tapes is truly captured only on vinyl. This should sound better than both the original vinyl, and the remastered CD.

New Dave Mustaine Amp

Marshall Amplification has announced the release of the Marshall 1960DM Dave Mustaine Signature Cabinet.

In 1962, a new amplifier became available to guitarists, bringing with it a whole new approach to how the guitar was played. Not only that but a new concept in speaker cabinet design was emerging from the same company; a single cabinet containing 4 x 12" speakers, that could be "stacked" on top of one another. The company behind this was Marshall Amplification, and the visionary Jim Marshall.

21 years later, in 1983 a new band emerged on the San Francisco bay area, bringing with them a unique, new sound for a generation. The music had a distinctive guitar style, often involving complex, intricate musical passages. The lyrics were profound and gave a sharp, cynical view of modern society. The band MEGADETH, the visionary Dave Mustaine.

The Dave Mustaine signature range consists of two cabinets, the 1960A-DM, which carries the classic angled look, and the 1960B-DM, the base, straight front cabinet.
Together they make one hell of a stack!

Hand-built in Marshall's U.K. factory, the company's development engineers have worked closely with Dave over the last year, and have devised Marshall's most visually and sonically striking product to date. Hand-sealed for an enhanced response, the baffle is fixed inside the cabinet housing and loaded with G12-V30 Marshall Celestion custom Dave Mustaine Vintage Speakers. This "sealed" construction gives tightly focused, aggressive projection to the sound and is exactly to Dave's specification.

Cosmetically, the cabinet looks like no other. Built with 15mm Birch Ply, the cabinet has a more open face look, with a diamond pattern, black powder coated steel kick grille to protect the speakers. Covered in rugged "Carbon Fibre" patterned, slate black vinyl, the cabs are finished with high impact-resistant cabinet fixtures and durable Manganese-Phosphate plated screws and rivets. The final touch is a
custom plaque in the corner of the cab, carrying the signatures of both Dave Mustaine and Dr. Jim Marshall OBE.

Included with each 1960DM cabinet is a DVD presented by Dave and featuring the building of the cabinet. There is also a heavy duty dust cover with a custom artwork and a product completion certificate hand-signed by the Marshall production staff.

Jason Newsted To Perform At Metallica Induction Ceremony

A day after former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted told Billboard.com that his replacement, Robert Trujillo, would not take part in the performance part of Saturday night's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, a spokesman for the group's label, Warner Bros. Records, clarified that "Jason and Robert will both be playing METALLICA's induction songs." He did not indicate what the songs would be or if Newsted and Trujillo would be on stage together or separately.

METALLICA is flying in from Paris, where the group plays Wednesday and Thursday nights, with plans to rehearse with Newsted at soundcheck on Friday.

Earlier this week, Newsted — who was METALLICA's bassist from 1986-2001 — said that when Lars Ulrich called to invite him to play at the ceremony, the drummer told him that "Robert's not gonna play at all...He wants to be there as a fan, too, and wants to see the 'black' album (1991's 'Metallica') band." Newsted added that he never expected to play in the first place and was "totally on board" with the idea of the current version of METALLICA performing without him.

"I felt strongly they should go as that band and represent because...they're strong right now together," Newsted said. "There was no negativity, no hubbub or jealousy or silly, childish...It was years ago, man. We're just gonna have a...great celebration."

Stay Hungry Re-Issue Details Revealed

TWISTED SISTER has set a June 23 release date for the 25th-anniversary reissue of "Stay Hungry" featuring loads of bonus material, including one brand new track, "30", that the band recently recorded.

The package includes:

* "Stay Hungry" remastered
* Ten never-before-heard songs originally demoed for "Stay Hungry"
* Five early demos of songs from "Stay Hungry"
* One brand new song
* One rare radio spot using "SMF" as the music bed

"Stay Hungry" bonus tracks:

* "Death From Above"
* "Prime Motivator"
* "Were Not Gonna Take It"
* "Death Run"
* "This One's For You"
* "SMF"
* "We're Coming On"
* "Call My Name"
* "Burn In Hell"
* "Pay The Price"
* "What's Love Without You"
* "Our Voice Will Be Heard"
* "You've Got To Fight"
* "The Price"
* "Stay Hungry"
* "30"

TWISTED SISTER guitarist Jay Jay French commented: "A couple of years ago, while playing to 80,000 fans in Quebec after not playing there since 1984, it struck me just how important our album 'Stay Hungry' had become. It broke sales records in 8 countries and the videos made us international stars. Canada especially had gone crazy for the album and bought it at a much greater proportional rate against U.S. sales then any album in recent memory.

"We had just released our re-recorded version of it called 'Still Hungry'. While talking to our fans in Canada, it struck me how many still preferred the original 'Stay Hungry'. Maybe, as band members, we were just too close to the whole thing. Maybe we just weren't seeing it and, more importantly, hearing it through the eyes of the fans who had spent the last 23 years with their ears tuned in to the sound of the original record. I knew that in two years a milestone was approaching. In May of 2009, the 25th anniversary of 'Stay Hungry' would arrive. I started to think of a way to recognize and celebrate the music and the times which had become so important to the lives of not only our millions of fans around the world, but also to acknowledge the importance and relevance of all of the music created by the hard rock bands of that period. What became obvious to me was that just re-mastering the original record was not a reason to re-release it. The only way this could be 'special' was to locate any material that was recorded by us at the time and never released so as to make a truly great two-disc package.

"Much to the band's surprise, Atlantic/Rhino discovered a series of cassettes that comprised almost a whole extra albums worth of material. This original music was part of the 'demo' process used in making 'Stay Hungry'. These tapes were recorded in December 1983 at Nino's studios in Baldwin, Long Island along with all the songs that wound up on the finished album. I completely forgot that these tapes ever existed. The band barely remembered these songs ever being recorded. Most of the songs, upon fresh listening, are shockingly good. Remember, these are demos which means that they are unfinished versions of songs. Maybe some day we will actually fully finish and record some of them if you, the fans, yell loudly enough. Don't ask me why some didn't make the record; the politics of that question are too deep to get into. Suffice it to say, we are proud of this material and, to make the re-release really special, we also recorded our first new song in 10 years — a song called '30'."

Italian news blog Musica Metal uploaded video footage (see below) of TWISTED SISTER performing the song "The Price" (which originally appeared on the "Stay Hungry" album) at the first edition of the Rock Of Ages festival, which was held on September 13, 2008 in Milan, Italy.

B. Joe..  I couldnt find th thread where you said in toronto the ampi-theater hold 16000, people so Iam posting in here..lol

Most amp-theaters in the states ect.. dont hold that many people..

The one in Cleveland only holds 5000

The Time-Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City (formerly the Tower City Amphitheater) is an approximate 5,000 seat concert venue located in Cleveland, Ohio.

The one In Toronto is half indoors, and half outdoors.. Its part covered seating, is what it looks like.

So it may be one of the bigger shows to go to...

Mistresses Of Metal To Air April 3rd

The 1980s were a decade of unprecedented decadence. Wall Street was booming, cocaine was the chic drug of choice, and L.A.'s notorious glam metal scene was in full swing on the Sunset Strip. Ruling that scene were the heavy hitting hair bands and the women who loved them. Narrated by former "Cherry Pie" video girl Bobbie Brown, "VH1 Rock Doc: Do It For The Band: The Women of the Sunset Strip" premiering Friday, April 3 at 11 p.m. on VH1 and Saturday, April 4 at 10p on VH1 Classic tells the story of the mistresses of metal — the women who played a big part in the L.A. rock scene but never got any credit — until now. These are the girls who sacrificed everything for the band — they clothed, bathed, fed, housed, and loved rock stars like Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Slash, Axl Rose, Blackie Lawless, Jani Lane and many others. Viewers will get a first hand look at what it was like to live life in the fast lane as the women reveal secrets and share stories about a time when the only rule was that there weren't any.

These women, who played pivotal roles in the lives of these male superstars, reveal never-before-shared secrets and stories delivered with candid alacrity like only retired strippers/showgirls turned present-day PTA moms can. We'll hear from:

* Adriana — former 7th Veil stripper, who dated Steven Adler, and was de-crabbed by Axl. She later saved Axl's life when he O.D.'d the week before "Appetite for Destruction" was released and went on to sleep with him in the studio one day as the guys wanted sounds of live sex to mix into their album;

* Gaby Gaby Hey, also a former stripper, who kept socks, cigarettes and booze on hand for the guys who would crash at her pad. Every Friday night they'd toss her apartment furniture over the balcony into the pool below then eat her poor man's spaghetti (noodles and butter);

* Pamela - a music video girl, saved Tommy Lee's life at the Flynt Mansion only to watch him get up the next morning and swill a whole bottle of Jack Daniels. Not long after, Pam became a born-again Christian and prayed hard the night Nikki Sixx O.D.'d and watched in relief as he also "resurrected."

Track By Track Review Of "The Devil You Know"

A track-by-track review of "The Devil You Know", the debut album from HEAVEN & HELL — the band featuring BLACK SABBATH members Tony Iommi (guitar), Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Geezer Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) — is available at MetalHammer.co.uk.

"The Devil You Know", featuring 10 soon-to-be-classic tracks from the Dio-fronted version of BLACK SABBATH, arrives in North America on April 28 from Rhino for a suggested list price of $18.98 (physical) and $9.99 (digital). It will also be made available as a limited-edition CD+DVD featuring band interviews and rehearsal footage. More information will be made available soon.

Roadrunner Records last week announced the signing of HEAVEN & HELL for the territories of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America.

HEAVEN & HELL's new single, "Bible Black", is available for streaming in its entirety below. The track begins with Tony Iommi on acoustic guitar behind Dio's plaintive wail before the rhythm shifts to a menacing stomp for the rest of this dark tale about a book of sinister scriptures. One of the first songs written for the album, Dio says it established a tone for the rest of the LP. "When you start off with a blockbuster like that, it makes the rest of the album so much easier because it gives you a benchmark to measure the other songs against."

01. Atom And Evil
02. Fear
03. Bible Black
04. Double The Pain
05. Rock And Roll Angel

Geoff Tate Explains New Track "Middle Of Hell"

Video footage of QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Geoff Tate talking about the band's new song "Middle Of Hell" can be viewed at this location.

Tate recently stated about the track: "The title of this song came from a something a soldier's dad had said on the eve of his son's deployment. He asked his son to be careful because he was going into hell. The soldier wrote back to his family a month after being overseas and told his dad, 'You were right, I'm in the middle of hell.' A soldier named Anthony was on humvee patrol in Baghdad. His vehicle was blown up with a buried mine and Anthony was severely injured and almost died. He said that patrolling the streets was incredibly tense because every time the vehicle would stop there were hundreds of people surrounding you and they didn't seem happy. They didn't want soldiers there. Everyone was dressed as a civilian so how do you know who the enemy is? How do you deal with that? You're on constant alert, watching for something out of the ordinary.

"He also told a story about being back home from his tour of duty and was pulled over by the police. When he asked what he was doing wrong, the officer said that he was driving down the middle of the road. Anthony said he was sorry, but he'd just gotten back from Iraq, where they couldn't drive in the actual lanes because that's where the bombs were. That inspired the line in the song, 'We drive straight down the centerline. No mistakes, not like last time. You don't want to be on the wrong side of Hell.' The chorus says, 'I'm all right. I'll be all right,' and that's a mantra these guys constantly repeat to themselves. They may have lost an arm, a leg, and an eye, but they'll still keep telling themselves they're going to be all right.

"Musically this turned out very hypnotic, it's very representative of driving. I put down a saxophone solo that Michael plays off with the guitar, intercepting and colliding at different times so the song has a mesmerizing feel with an underlying tension."

QUEENSRŸCHE's twelfth studio release, the epic concept album "American Soldier", is available for streaming in its entirety at VH1.com.

"American Soldier" track listing

01. Sliver
02. Unafraid
03. Hundred Mile Stare
04. At 30,000 Ft.
05. A Dead Man's Words
06. The Killer
07. Middle Of Hell
08. If I Were King
09. Man Down!
10. Remember Me
11. Home Again
12. The Voice

"American Soldier" will be available from Atco/Rhino on March 31 for a suggested list price of $18.98 (CD) and $9.99 (digital). The ambitious album encompasses a dozen songs inspired by numerous interviews with veterans conducted by Geoff Tate, the group's singer and chief songwriter, who was intent on telling their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served in various conflicts — from World War II to Iraq — Tate turned their firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical examination of the life of a solider and the consequences of war.

Parker Lundgren, a member of QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff Tate's solo band, has officially joined QUEENSRŸCHE as the group's new touring guitarist.

Lundgren, who is apparently engaged to Tate's daughter Miranda, played several shows with the QUEENSRŸCHE frontman last September and joined Tate and QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist Michael Wilton for a rare all-acoustic set at KISW's annual Holiday Hangover Ball on December 12, 2008 at Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Washington.

According to The Breakdown Room, AnybodyListening.net's QUEENSRŸCHE discussion forum, the band has lined up an acoustic performance for its hometown Seattle fans on Saturday, April 4.

The details are as follows:

Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m.
Silver Platters (Queen Anne)

Seattle, Washington

Gene Simmons Update On New Kiss Album

KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has issued the following update:

"Today, went through the entire set we intend on playing in the forthcoming South American swing of our KISS Alive 35 world tour. If you've seen some of the media coming out of South America, you'll notice we're mostly playing soccer stadiums... and we're told the tix are almost all gone.

"Today was a special day — we all lined up to get yellow fever shots. Great. No one was anxious to get stung by a needle, but if that's what it takes for us to get together with 50,000 close friends, we'll role up our sleeves.

"We've also been recording our first new studio album in 11 years! Produced by Paul Stanley. And having Paul simply decide things works better. Democracy is highly overrated. Paul is kickin' ass. The material sounds great and Tommy [Thayer] and Eric [Singer] are in great form.

"We have four tunes recorded. If you're a fan of our stuff from about 1977, you'll feel right at home. All of us have taken up the songwriting call to arms in the same spirit we once did — without a care in the world and without outside writers. Nothing to prove to anyone. Just doing what comes naturally. Ignoring fashions, trends and with a personal vow from all of us: no rapping. There are plenty of people out there doing this and they don't need four pale-faced guys pretending they're from the hood. Besides, I'm not sure how to correctly pronounce 'wassup.'

"Tommy is finishing his solo tune. Sounds great, I can tell you. And Eric is going to sing on the album.

"Most importantly, we are having the time of our lives, and can't wait to see our friends south of the border.

"We hop on our jet April 1, on the way to gig #1 — Santiago.

"See you all there...Or maybe later!"

Testament Perform Entire First Two Albums

San Francisco Bay Area thrashers TESTAMENT played their first two albums, 1987's "The Legacy" and 1988's "The New Order" in their entirety (almost) live at the Islington Academy in London, England on March 25, 2009.

Photos of the event can be found at RockersDigest.com.

TESTAMENT's setlist was as follows:

01. Over The Wall
02. The Haunting
03. Burnt Offerings
04. C.O.T.L.O.D.
05. Raging Waters
06. First Strike Is Deadly
07. Do Or Die
08. Alone In The Dark
09. Apocalyptic City
10. Musical Death (A Dirge) (excerpt)
11. Eerie Inhabitants
12. The New Order
13. Trial By Fire
14. Into The Pit
15. The Preacher
16. A Day Of Reckoning
17. Reign Of Terror
18. Disciples Of The Watch
19. Rapid Fire (jam)
20. More Than Meets The Eye
21. The Formation Of Damnation

TESTAMENT will embark on a North American headlining tour in May/June. Support on the trek will come from UNEARTH and LAZARUS A.D.

TESTAMENT singer Chuck Billy commented: "It was really exciting last summer touring with JUDAS PRIEST, HEAVEN AND HELL, and MOTÖRHEAD, playing in front of all the old-school as well as new-school metalheads. Now we look forward to CRUSHING on our first headline tour on the Damnation Vacation U.S. run. Heavy metal forever!!!"

Prosthetic Records has set an April 14 release date for "Live at Eindhoven '87", a complete recording of TESTAMENT's performance at the 1987 edition of the Dynamo Open Air festival. A metal history lesson of the highest order, "Live at Eindhoven '87" sees the group's original lineup — vocalist Chuck Billy, guitarists Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, bassist Greg Christian, and drummer Louie Clemente — at their absolute hungriest.

In addition to recently re-releasing TESTAMENT's 1997 album "Demonic" — hailed as "the most evil-sounding album of their career" (AMG) — and 1999's "The Gathering" (praised by Metal Hammer as the most important metal album of the late '90s), as well as the 2001 re-recordings collection "First Strike Still Deadly", Prosthetic has also just reissued "Demonic" and "The Gathering" on gatefold, etched double-vinyl. Strictly limited to 1,000 copies each, each pressing also includes 100 colored LPs (gold for "The Gathering", red for "Demonic").

More British Steel Shit...

For the past few years, JUDAS PRIEST has unquestionably ruled the U.S. summer concert scene, having been a part of both the top-grossing Ozzfest and Metal Masters tours. And this summer, PRIEST has done it again, by uniting with WHITESNAKE for a series of stateside shows. PRIEST will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the classic album "British Steel" (it was originally issued in April 1980), by performing the album in its entirety for the very first time ever live on stage! In addition they will be playing some old favorites.

Along with 1982’s "Screaming for Vengeance" and 1990's "Painkiller", "British Steel" has long been considered one of metal's all-time classics.

Along with PRIEST, WHITESNAKE is certainly one of the most instantly identifiable names in all of hard rock. PRIEST and WHITESNAKE toured together in 2005 (in Mexico and South America), resulting in such a well-received and great package that since then, both groups have been planning to work together again. This summer, U.S. fans will finally get their wish.

"The opportunity to perform live on stage in its entirety the whole of 'British Steel' is a dream come true for all of us! We're really excited and looking forward to presenting the album live on stage. Fans will be able to enjoy a taste of true heavy metal when it was in its early, raw state!" said the group in a statement. "Plus, we will of course be throwing in a few other PRIEST classics!"

The dates are as follows:

Jul. 01 - The Family Arena St. Charles, MO
Jul. 02 - Summerfe - (Harley Davidson Stage) Milwaukee, WI
Jul. 03 - Taste of Minnesota at Harriet Island - St. Paul, MN *

King Diamond Interview

Carlos Ramirez of IGN recently conducted an interview with Danish heavy metal singer King Diamond (MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND) about his involvement with the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica game. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

IGN: First off, I have to ask you, did you ever play Guitar Hero or any other video games before you were approached to do this project?

King Diamond: I actually do play games. It's a great way to relax and not think about everything else going on in your life. I love playing the military type of games. I'm into the ones where you have a mission to run and all of that kind of stuff. Games like Fallout are great. You just get lost in it. But now with this METALLICA game, I have to really start getting good. The company did a great job with it and I know everyone who already plays Guitar Hero will really like it.

IGN: Throughout your career, metal heads have tried to imitate your high pitched singing voice and the results have been disastrous. Now with this game coming out, I'm sure that won't change.

Diamond: [Laughing] Yeah I have heard that through the years from fans and some parents even. I know people get together and have parties at bars and at home playing Guitar Hero so it will be fun to hear them singing along to these tracks.

IGN: One of the things you recorded for the game was the song "Evil" which you first laid down in 1983. Did you do anything different in the tracking?

Diamond: Well, the main thing about that is besides the drummer, we have all of the same people playing on this new version that were there for the original sessions. It was very interesting going back to listen to the records and trying to figure out all of the vocal layering and harmonies. We couldn't find the original tapes anywhere so we started over. Hank (Shermann) might have changed a few things in the guitar solos but they were just improvement types of things. He's obviously playing better these days because that was so long ago but that's really the only big changes. The craziest part of the recording process for me was the technical part of it. Since this was going to be for Guitar Hero we had to have a separate track for every instrument. There was no panning or that kind of stuff going on. I think these new versions came out really great. Once the game is out, I know that the songs will be available on iTunes too.

IGN: How do you feel about video game culture and its impact on music? They are musicians who think it has taken away attention from it and made younger people lazier but some think it has opened up new avenues for their music to get out there.

Diamond: I've always said that video games are positive thing. Like I was saying before, I find it as a really relaxing thing. It's a nice way to escape for a while. For the musicians who are against the whole thing, I think they are crazy. Look how many times people are exposed to music they like that they normally wouldn't have been exposed to. Video games have opened up so many people onto cool bands so I have never understood the argument against them.

Steven Adler Interview

Sonic Excess recently conducted an interview with original GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Sonic Excess: In 2005, ADLER'S APPETITE recorded an EP with original material. Do you have any plans on going into the studio and recording a full-length album?

Adler: Absolutely! Next week (first week in April 2009), once we finish this tour up, I am going to go home for a few days and just sleep. We have done 22 shows, so I am going to sleep for a few days, then I am going to have a couple meetings with Slash. I have been working with Slash. I am producing the record and playing on it, of course, so that will be in a week or two that we finish with this (the final date on the tour).

Sonic Excess: Is that going to be Slash's solo record?

Adler: No, that is going to be my record, but I am going to play a song on Slash's solo record too, so I will be doing some recording with him on that, but he is going to be producing my record.

Sonic Excess: Now are you going to have any guest appearance on your record?

Adler: Of course, we want eight cover songs. With each song we do we want at least one person who played on the original version to play on my record. I am thinking about changing the name to ADLER'S GNR too, because you cannot copyright the letters. I am one-fifth of the band just like he is one-fifth of the band (Axl Rose). At least I'm out their playing the songs people want to hear.

Sonic Excess: So this is not going to be just a regular recording, it is going to have everyone on it?

Adler: Yeah. I want to do it old school with a two-inch tape and not with computers. I want an old sound — not perfect and crispy. I do not want to take away the magic of the songs that I redo. Nowadays people go into the studio and record a song, the drummer will play 30 seconds of the beat and type the rest of it in on a computer. I want it all real, that's how we did "Appetite", it was done in one take. It was anything goes, whatever happens happens.

Sonic Excess: The last time I did an interview with you, I had asked you about the new GUNS N' ROSES lineup and you said that "there is no new GUNS N' ROSES." Do you still feel the same way and have you heard "Chinese Democracy" yet?

Adler: Yeah, Axl should have named the band W.A.R. for W. Axl Rose and I think that would have been much better.

Sonic Excess: Axl Rose did a recent interview with Del James and when asked about a GUNS N' ROSES reunion, Axl gave a reason for not considering it and listed why involving every former member Axl said "Steven [Adler] brings assorted ambulance-chasing attorneys and the nightmare of his mother. One gig, or even a couple songs, could mean years of behind-the-scenes legal aftermath." What is your response to that?

Adler: I do not know why he would say that. My mother thing is over and I do not know why he is still going on with that. Now that I'm back in control and have power of attorney, I don't know why he would say ambulance chaser. I don't get it.

Gaahl And King Lose Battle For Gorgoroth Name

Former GORGOROTH members Gaahl (vocals; real name: Kristian Espedal) and King (bass; real name: Tom Cato Visnes), who recently lost a court battle against guitarist Infernus (real name: Roger Tiegs) over the rights to the GORGOROTH band name, have chosen the new banner of GOD SEED to represent their art in the future.

GOD SEED was chosen for many reasons; it represents the will to grow, the god within man and nature and the will to reach one's highest potential. "God Seed" is also the title of a track from the last album released under the "GORGOROTH" banner and in that respect it symbolizes what is brought from the past into a new beginning and a new future.

Gaahl and King's new CD, which has been in the works as a "GORGOROTH" album, will now be released as the first GOD SEED LP and should be in stores in late 2009 via the group's new label home, Norway's Indie Recordings.

King comments: "The past 18 months has been a struggle on many levels. Therefore I'm very excited about GOD SEED — even on a personal level. Hopefully this will lead to growth to me personally and for the band as a whole. It's time to use my energy on something that wants to live, rather than to use my energy on something that wants to die and be part of my past!!!"

Gaahl and King entered the studio on August 25, 2008 in the their hometown of Bergen, Norway to begin recording eight new tracks composed by the bassist for an as-yet-untitled new album. Along with Gaahl, King and Frost (SATYRICON) on drums, the full recording lineup includes Teloch (guitar) and Ice Dale (guitar). ENSLAVED's Herbrand Larsen once again produced the band in the studio.

Adrian Smith Talks New Maiden Album

U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine recently conducted an interview with guitarist Adrian Smith of British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Metal Hammer: Talking to everybody else, the attention seems to be now turning to a new album…

Adrian Smith: "Yeah, we were talking about it briefly the other day and I've been thinking about it every day since because there are so many ways we can go with it. It'd be nice if we had the songs now and we could come off tour and go straight into the studio match-fit, as it were. Usually we have a long time off, and the way we play in the studio is as live, so it's always a bit tense at first because we haven't played for six months. I'd ideally like to go in [soon]. Again, it's a day-to-day thing, you go in, take it as you find it, try and do the best job you can.”

Metal Hammer: We've noticed one thing that was different from 12 months ago, when we interviewed Steve [Harris, bass], he said, "We've always said, 'We're only going to do 15 albums, we're coming up to it, there's going to be an ending point.'" Is everyone seeing things a little differently now?

Adrian: "Look, we write music, we're musicians, we'll carry on. The great thing is that there's clearly a huge audience out there waiting to hear what we're going to do right now; and in the real world, that's not a very common situation, so you have to appreciate it. It's not always easy to make an album; you've got six guys with their own ideas and focusing it into one outcome is quite difficult."

Metal Hammer: Is it the case that you use up every idea for an album each time, and that there's never anything left over from that for next time?

Adrian: "I know a lot of bands who demo stuff from 30 songs or something and then break up when they're trying to pick 10 because you get the ego and the each guy wants to get their ideas in, so we just try to write 10 or 12 songs, and get everybody's best ideas in there. You soon know when you start playing it whether it's going to fly or not. You just have to do the best you can. It's difficult for everybody to be happy with the album: there's always a compromise, but as long as you can get through it and come out the other side and still be a band that's what it's all about. Sometimes creative conflict is good in songwriting, it brings out the best in everyone."

Pantera Boxset In the Works
During an appearance on the March 6 edition of "The Jim Rome Show" (one of the nation's premiere sports radio talk shows), DOWN/ex-PANTERA bassist Rex Brown confirmed that a PANTERA box set is in the works. According to Rex, the set will consist of much more than a simple repackaging of the existing CDs.

You can listen to a portion of the interview below.

PANTERA's career overview CD, "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits!" (Elektra/Rhino), was certified platinum on January 13, 2006 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments in excess of one million copies in the U.S. The band's classic "Vulgar Display of Power" (Elektra) album was certified double-platinum in 2004, signifying shipments of more than 2,000,000 units in the U.S. since its February 25, 1992 release.

Rhino Video in April 2006 released PANTERA's "3 Vulgar Videos From Hell" — a three-DVD set featuring all the band's videos as well as live footage shot during the Monsters of Rock gig in Moscow. Originally released on DVD in 1999, this version features the same content with improved menus and all-new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. In fact, it is the first PANTERA release ever in 5.1 Surround Sound. It features: "Cowboys From Hell The Videos", "Vulgar Video", "3 Watch It Go", and "Pantera Live From Monsters of Rock In Moscow".

Dimebag Darrell was co-founder and lead guitarist for PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul formed DAMAGEPLAN. On Dec. 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. He was 38 years old.

VH1 Acquires Rights To Anvil: The Story of Anvil Documentry

VH1 has acquired the exclusive rights for the critically acclaimed documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil". VH1 will handle the television and DVD release and distribute the film theatrically in association with Abramorama. The world television premiere on VH1 this summer and the subsequent DVD release of the film follow a network-wide, multi-platform promotional campaign supporting the theatrical film release April 10, 2009 in New York and Los Angeles followed by a national roll-out.

"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" is the directorial debut of screenwriter Sacha Gervasi ("The Terminal") and was produced by Rebecca Yeldham ("The Kite Runner" and "The Motorcycle Diaries"). The film follows Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner and their band, ANVIL, which released one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982's "Metal on Metal". The album influenced an entire musical generation of rock bands, including METALLICA, SLAYER, and ANTHRAX, who all went on to sell millions of records. ANVIL, on the other hand, took a different path — straight to obscurity. The film is both entertaining and touching as it follows their last-ditch quest for the fame and fortune that has been so elusive to them. "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" is a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream, year after year.

Ironically, life is now looking up for the band. After years of playing to empty bars and working dead end jobs, the band is beginning to find the success that evaded them for decades. They have recently been signed by manager Rick Sales (SLAYER), U.S. agent Scott Sokol (MEGADETH, HEAVEN AND HELL), and U.K. agent Steve Strange (COLDPLAY). The band is being welcomed with open arms everywhere they go. Their latest fan, Sarah Brown (wife of the Prime Minister), attended the red carpet premiere of the film in the UK. Now with a U.S. tour, the support of VH1 and VH1 Classic, a feature documentary, and an immeasurable amount of will and determination, the band is picking up where they left off twenty five years ago.

"When I was sixteen years old, ANVIL was my favorite band in the world," said Sacha Gervasi, director of the film. "I couldn't believe it when I met Lips and Robb in London and they invited me to come out on the road with them. Running away to join the rock and roll circus was, of course, an experience I never forgot. When I met the band again twenty years later I was completely awed and inspired to discover that they simply refused to give up on the dream they had had as kids. It makes me intensely happy and proud to see the band finally getting the recognition they so richly deserve. ANVIL rocks!"

"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it received acclaim from critics and audiences alike. It went on to win the Audience Awards at the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival, 2008 Sydney Film Festival, and 2009 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, as well as the Best Documentary Feature Awards at 2008 Galway Film Fleadh, 2008 Calgary Film Festival, 2008 Edmonton Film Festival, and 2009 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. The film was also nominated for the Truer Than Fiction Award at the 2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The film was released in the UK to critical acclaim on February 20, 2009.

"This film is so much more than a documentary about the roots of metal. It's a story about the power of perseverance and friendship and the passion that drives them," said Tom Calderone, President of VH1. "'Anvil! The Story of Anvil' has a huge heart and will resonate with all of our viewers. This is the type of project that drew me into the VH1 fold and makes me especially proud to work here."

Praised as "the best documentary I've seen in years," by documentarian Michael Moore, the London Times calls it "possibly the greatest film yet made about rock and roll;" "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" contains appearances by an array of heavy metal icons, including METALLICA's Lars Ulrich, former member of GUNS N' ROSES Slash, ANTHRAX's Scott Ian, and SLAYER's Tom Araya, among others.

"Sacha knew from the beginning that this was not just a 'metal' film. In my first encounter with ANVIL, it was impossible not to be moved by their loyalty, determination and mad, blind faith. How sweet it is to see them now ride this tide of success — not just to be heard, finally — but to be heralded for their humbling tenacity and devotion to their art and to each other," said producer Rebecca Yeldham.

VH1 has thrown the full support of the network behind ANVIL, the band's music and the film on all platforms. The timing of this support from not only VH1 but from the music and film industry coincides with the realization of ANVIL's lifelong dream to "make it."

Timed to the release of the film in April, VH1 Classic will serve as the exclusive presenter for the band's U.S. tour. "VH1 Classic Presents: The Anvil Experience" will cover seven markets and upcoming dates, venues and ticket information will be available immediately on the film's website anvilmovie.com and VH1Classic.com. At each tour stop, the film will be played immediately followed by a short performance by the band.

This episode will run timed to the film's April theatrical release and will then repeat promoting the film's television premiere on VH1 and the film's availability on DVD.

The DVD release and world television premiere of the film on VH1 and VH1 Classic this summer will be supported by significant on-air promos on VH1 and VH1 Classic and dedicated online promotion on VH1.com. Each telecast will include a customized on-screen graphic supporting the DVD release which will be made available to fans at a later date yet to be announced. Promotional excerpt clips of the film will also be supported and streamed on FVOD, online and wireless.

"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" is directed by Sacha Gervasi and produced by Rebecca Yeldham, with cinematography by Chris Soos, editing by Jeff Renfroe and Andrew Dickler, and music supervision by Dana Sano.

Black Sabbath Album Art Is Official

After finishing several heralded world tours as HEAVEN & HELL last summer, Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice were tighter than ever before, both musically and personally.

Agreeing that it would be a shame to stop making music together at tour's end, the quartet began writing, first in England at Iommi's home studio and later in Los Angeles at Dio's studio. "The band had gotten too good to just walk away," Dio says. "We wanted to show people that we were still capable of giving them new music that measured up to what we'd done in the past."

With that goal in mind, the band once again converged on Rockfield Studios in Wales last winter, the same place they used 17 years earlier to record their last album, "Dehumanizer". The result is the long-awaited new album, "The Devil You Know", featuring 10 soon-to-be-classic tracks from the Dio-fronted version of BLACK SABBATH. The highly anticipated set arrives on April 28 from Rhino for a suggested list price of $18.98 (physical) and $9.99 (digital).

It took less than three weeks to finish the album, with most of the songs only needing a couple of takes. "It was good to play them live in the studio. It keeps you on edge," Iommi says. "I mean, somewhere along the line we were gonna have to play them live; might as well start in the studio." Butler adds: "We've learned from the past that you can kill a song doing it over and over. The first SABBATH albums were done in two or three days. Technically they weren't great, but vibe-wise they were great. If you capture that feeling, that's all you need."

"Bible Black", the epic first single, begins with Iommi on acoustic guitar behind Dio's plaintive wail before the rhythm shifts to a menacing stomp for the rest of this dark tale about a book of sinister scriptures. One of the first songs written for the album, Dio says it established a tone for the rest of the album. "When you start off with a blockbuster like that, it makes the rest of the album so much easier because it gives you a benchmark to measure the other songs against."

Iommi proves he hasn't lost the ability to inspire six-string envy, unleashing riffs like a pack of rabid hellhounds on "Atom And Evil", "Fear", "Neverwhere", and "Eating The Cannibals", a tune about doing more than biting the hand that feeds. Butler and Appice slow the pace while ramping up the intensity on "Follow The Tears" and "Double The Pain" and "Breaking Into Heaven", the latter diverging from its glacial procession for Dio's majestic chorus about fallen angels planning an attack on paradise.

"The Devil You Know" track listing:

01. Atom And Evil
02. Fear
03. Bible Black
04. Double The Pain
05. Rock And Roll Angel
06. The Turn Of The Screw
07. Eating The Cannibals
08. Follow The Tears
09. Neverwhere
10. Breaking Into Heaven

New Queensryche Single and Complete Album Lyrics Available

AnybodyListening.net has posted the lyrics to QUEENSRŸCHE's forthcoming album, "American Soldier". Check them out at this location.

QUEENSRŸCHE's twelfth studio release, the epic concept album "American Soldier", will be available from Atco/Rhino on March 31 for a suggested list price of $18.98 (CD) and $9.99 (digital).

"American Soldier" was written by Tate and producer Jason Slater, along with drummer Scott Rockenfield, and contributors Kelly Gray and Damon Johnson. Slater returns to the QUEENSRŸCHE creative process in the same capacity that worked for the band with the writing and recording of "Operation: Mindcrime II", which was released in 2006 and debuted at #14 on The Billboard 200, selling more than 40,000 records in its first week. The album was QUEENSRŸCHE's highest chart debut since "Promised Land", in 1994. Both "Promised Land" and "Operation: Mindcrime" (1988) have been certified platinum, selling more than one million albums each in America alone, and "Empire" (1990) has reached triple-platinum status. The band's first three albums–their self-titled EP (1983), "The Warning" (1984), and "Rage For Order" (1986) — have all been certified gold, selling more than 500,000 copies each.

In a first for QUEENSRŸCHE, all of the guitar tracks on "American Soldier" were recorded by Michael Wilton.

"American Soldier" track listing

01. Sliver
02. Unafraid
03. Hundred Mile Stare
04. At 30,000 Ft.
05. A Dead Man's Words
06. The Killer
07. Middle Of Hell
08. If I Were King
09. Man Down!
10. Remember Me
11. Home Again
12. The Voice

"If I Were King" (audio stream), the first single from "American Soldier", is now available for download from all digital retailers. "If I Were King" was written based on an interview lead singer Geoff Tate conducted with Sean Lenahan, a veteran of U.S. conflicts in Somalia and Kosovo. Some chilling sound bites from Tate's interview with Lenahan can be heard at various points in the song.

A photo of what appears to be the final artwork for "The Devil You Know", the forthcoming debut album from HEAVEN AND HELL — the band featuring BLACK SABBATH members Tony Iommi (guitar), Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Geezer Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) — has popped up online and can be viewed below.

"The Devil You Know" is scheduled for release on April 28 via Rhino. The LP was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, U.K. where the 1992 SABBATH album "Dehumanizer" was also tracked.

The track listing for the CD is as follows:

01. Atom & Evil
02. Fear
03. Bible Black
04. Double the Pain
05. Rock & Roll Angel
06. The Turn of the Screw
07. Eating the Cannibals
08. Follow the Tears
09. Neverwhere
10. Breaking into Heaven

"Everyone had so much fun playing together that we didn't want it to end," says the group in a press release. "We started writing together and the songs started flowing like we never stopped. We wound up writing and recording an album that stands up to anything we've ever done. We're really proud of the music and excited for people to hear it."

"Each of us submitted a CD of our ideas, and we narrowed it down from there," Iommi told Classic Rock. "In some ways it was like picking up where we'd left off with 'Dehumanizer'."

In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Ronnie James Dio described the material on the HEAVEN AND HELL album as "a real cross-section of everything we've done, from 'Heaven and Hell' through 'Mob Rules' and 'Dehumanizer'. I think there's a lot of 'Dehumanizer' in it, but a lot of other things, too, a real good blend of what this band has represented."

HEAVEN AND HELL will premier "The Devil You Know" on the April 29 edition of the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" with host Bob Coburn at 8:30 p.m. PT / 11:30 p.m. ET. An encore presentation of the show will air on May 4. Fans are encouraged to speak with HEAVEN AND HELL by calling 1-800-344-ROCK (7625).

Three years ago, Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice reunited to record a trio of new songs for Rhino's "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" before launching a highly anticipated and greatly acclaimed world tour under their new moniker HEAVEN AND HELL. Revitalized by the reunion, the lineup returned to the studio to record the first-ever full-length studio album from HEAVEN AND HELL. To whet the fans' appetites for the new album, HEAVEN AND HELL hit the road last summer for a short stint on the Metal Masters Tour, a month-long North American trek with JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD, and TESTAMENT.

Regarding the band's decision to continue to operate as HEAVEN AND HELL rather than BLACK SABBATH, Iommi told Billboard.com last year, "It really is BLACK SABBATH, whatever we do. We just choose to go out as HEAVEN AND HELL so everyone knows what they're getting [and] so people won't expect to hear 'Iron Man' and all those songs. We've done them for so many years, it's nice to do just all the stuff with did with Ronnie again."

BLACK SABBATH's "The Rules Of Hell" box set — which features all three of SABBATH's Dio-era studio releases ("Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules", "Dehumanizer") and its double live collection ("Live Evil"), each remastered for the first time — sold around 2,650 copies in the United States in its first week of release back in July 2008, according to Nielsen SoundScan."The Rules Of Hell" comes packaged in a deluxe slipcase with extensive liner notes featuring all new interviews with the band.
