Hi Becks. Congrats and good luck with your new job. Weekend hours always suck if you have to be working but, as you say, it's a job and that's always good to have! We're also heading into winter here. Getting colder and darker quicker almost every morning lol. On thursday morning I ended up trapped in a rain storm and cycled for almost 3 hours in the rain, not fun but at least I didn't chicken out. I looked like a drowned candy box when I got home (all the rediculously bright coloured clothing cyclists are forced to wear so that cars/trucks/moving objects can see us and not hit into us). My cycling shoes were full of water and I couldn't feel my feet by the time I got them off. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by Becks from Sunday, May 03, 2009 3:35:43 PM)

Hey hey! It's Sunday!!
Sounds like everyone is having a fantastic day so far.
Wow, what a busy weekend. I'm kind of glad that it's coming to and end though. It's been a busy one from Friday through Sunday..
As I mentioned, the LKJ show on friday night, spent the whole of saturday doing kiddy things (they deserved it they were so well behaved with the sitter on friday) and today was the Olive Festival. I love it! Once a year in this little town they have th olive festival where you go and .. well, it's pretty self explanitory lol. Got my yearly stock of fresh pressed organic olive oil and olives and some really groovy earings! The kids had fun wondering between all the stalls and got some stickers to decorate their toyboxes with so the whole family went home happy.. Now it's time to eat! I'm starving! Pasta is on the menu tonight, I love pasta!

Syrup, sorry to hear that! I might suggest that you spend the fifty dollars or so that it costs to fly here to Vegas and join me for the August 8th show! NO such silly curfews here, my friend!!! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was hoping there would be interest around here for another Priest Meet-Up like we did last year! Looks like that will not happen, though.

Good to hear some local boys still go out and pull themselves up by their bootstraps same way Priest did so many years ago.

There is this one local band: Hog Hoggidy Hog (yeah stoopid name but..) I got to know them through having to do interviews and wright ups etc.. They got together and decided to just go to Europe and wing it. So they managed to get onto some bills and toured Europe. They didn't make much money at all. They managed to pay for their transport and accomidation but they also got recognition. They did small venues and some had an audience of ten people some had in the very high hudreds. They went out on their own and now they're pretty popular in Europe.
I had a great time and on evenings like this, I have hope for South African musicians who deserve to be out there where they belong!
Still.... Waiting for this big metal band that are on this world tour thing and are going to come here so that I can say I saw Priest in my homeland??? ROFl
No, I never give up!

That's just crazy, you would think that Promotors would be all for promoting their own country's offerings to the world. Imagine all the music that get's missed because the band cant get to cash to go to England. Seems very narrow minded on the music industriy's behalf not to promote from within, sort of speak.
You should write a review on the band anyway, and freelance it to a mag or another paper. Someone is bound to want to listen.
joedraper wrote:
The thing is that (unbelievably lol) South Africa does have a huge multiculture of muscality.. We have everything from traditional, tribal music to pop, to jazz to metal and some very formidable rock. I don't think that promoters do the talent here any justice at all. That is why we've seen so many of our local artists leave our shores to seek recognition elsewhere. For instance: Dave Mathews (ok not very metal but anyways) is a South African.Seether. Now they've done so much for this country and had to achieve their status in the USA because they just couldn't get the backing here. We've also got an aspiring artist who could rival any international act.. A guy called Arno Carstens. That guy should be right at the top period. And he had to sign a deal with a UK record label and move to the UK so that he could produce music.
Those kind of things make me sick. We have a lot of really bad artist but we also have an elitist list of pure excellence in their field and nobody here seems to want to do a thing about it. They'd rather import mediocre acts like Celine Dion and The Pussycat Dolls than give our real guys any light of day.. (hey.. could this be why the don't want me to review those concerts?? lol)

These guys were just so natural. I'm still totally in awe of the evening I had. I'm a tad dissapointed that I wasn't asked to do a review on this band for the local that I write for because I really enjoyed something that I went out hell bent on believing that I would hate (if that makes any sense?) I always get asked to write reviews or articles on bands that the editor knows I like and know so this would have been so cool to have such an open review about a genre that I am totally not familiar with. Hell, I think I'll just write a review anyway and give it to the mag and see if they feel like using it. The bands were that good!

I don't know if anyone even knows this artist but he's so cool! He's like this distinguished old british dinosaur who is more of a poet than a reggae artist. His percussionist is so old, I think he could have been Linton's dad (Linton is in his 70's now so imagine how old the percussionist is) and the drummer is this little british kid who looks like he's had the crap beaten out of him at school but is a really steady great drummer (no, not as great as Travolous but then who is? lol)
Linton is so old that instead of a promper board, he'd take out a neatly folded white piece of paper with a set list and presumably a refresher on the lyrics he was supposed to be singing on it.
I was pretty apprehensive when I first went out,but I'm glad I did!
Ok.. Ready for Priest now..
