I think if a public execution were to have taken place it would've sent a message to Jihadist.  But now we'll never know.

I think this photo sums up what we think of Osama. He had made it clear he would never be taken alive, and I do believe he was armed. Good riddance.
Just saw a newsreal, he was not armed. Does not matter. Glad he is gone.

Not really something that pisses me off but the assassination of Osama Bin Laden was in my opinion a messy affair and was sloppily executed. I'm ok that one of our soldiers killed him cus after all he was following orders. But his assassination was a cheap shot for political agenda on President Obama's part. Why couldn't Osama Bin Laden be apprehended and tried for war crimes and THEN be sentenced to death just like President Bush did with Suddam Hussein? Even a despicable worm like him deserves or reserves the right to a trial. After all we were gonna kill him anyway, I would've prefered a public execution....and have it held right in the middle of New York City's Ground Zero!!!

Right now I'm looking at a HP-Pavilion / AMD Athlon ll Quad-Core Processor / 4GB Mem / 1TB Hard Drive / wireless N technology / and has Win7 pre-installed.  HDMI for the flat screen is important to us.

(obviously, I am reading these posts in reverse order)

"Want a computer to last at least 5 years?" Why would you still stick with a dual core, then? Hell, popping a quad into a new Sandybridge mobo (- Cougar Point. Intel fixed the problem with the first release) is a minor bump in price but will take a 2 core to task. Like I said in my first comment, why anyone would put an outdated processor into a new build is beyond me. Especially when the price difference isn't that great. Go AMD and Linux if you really want to get most bang for the buck.

An OCZ (Vertex or Agility) 2 +/- 50GB drive hovers around the $100 -110 range. Not a great mem=buck ratio but getting better every day.
While you can get them with greater capacity, that size would be enough for the OS. Burst read/write speeds are outstanding. Yup, exacly right, pseudo-nerd. A FLASH! Heh.
[ron h] Sunday, April 17, 2011 9:41:40 AM
Well, I've decided I'm going with Win7 because XP Pro will no longer have support as of 2014.  The upgrades I make now I want to last the next 5 years!!

That being said, I have new issues to deal with.  Though I still think a dual core processor is fine for me, you've got me thinking about the quad.  You both hit the nail on the head as far as all the apps that slow a computer down and if I'm upgrading it only makes sense to do it right the first time.  I am NOT a comp geek by any stretch, though I am able to understand what ya'll are talking about.

I looked into the various SSD's and they all seem more than adequate for my needs.  This would be a seperate purchase along with my kit, but I'm finding it difficult to find what's compatible with what.  I've always been the type to learn hands on as I go, but the $'s add up if I make a mistake.

I think I need to take some time to absord all the information I'm gathering!!  lol

Whats pissing me off, well I'm not actually pissed off about it but more disappointed is this lockout from the NFL. I've been an NFL fan since the 70's,not into college sports, just NBA and NFL with the NFL my favorite and to see this bickering...the millionares vs. the billionares...ect....

I don't want to discuss the situation behind all this, but I love the "spirit of the game"...sure there are "some" players that care more about the money than sacrificing themselves to win but there are also the players that are surely quabbling over money but once they get on the field and think about winning a Super bowl they leave that all behind and have passion for the spirit of the game itself.

But thinking we won't have an NFL season this September is a letdown to say the least. The Cleveland Browns have been my favorite team since 1985 ( yes I know they fuckin suck lol ) and the New England Patriots have been my 2nd fav. team since 1993 with Peyton Manning being my favorite QB along with Brady.

And New England's loss to the smart assed irritating big mouth pompous New York Jets(I've always hated the Jets but not as much as I do now) in January 3 months ago was the worse disappointment personally I have ever seen in my life,I was bummed out all day long and Victoria laughed her ass off at me lol ( she is from Denver and loved John Elway,as I did too ha! )

But yeah I've seen worse losses by points,blow-outs ect...but never the disappointment of a team that went 14-2 and lost to the freaking rival Jets, that sucked! Going back to the point, its a shame that there may be no football because I'm aching for the Patriots to beat the Jets both times in the regular season if not a match up in the playoffs have both teams make it next year, what a shame these money hungry mofos can't get it together!

How much are SS hard drives running these days Guid? I know they were outragous a few years back when they were new, like anything tech wise. Just wondering if they had come in to the realm of actual reality yet.
In a flash~ as in huge storage flash drive. I'd love to have one, not that I need one, but I want one. lol

Nupe beat me to the punch, Ron. Word for word. Exactly the reaoning behind getting at least a quad core, what OS to run and why. I run Win Pro on five of my six Winboxes with Win 7 on the final laptop just because of the quad core. All OEM versions of the OS. Not even a need to bat an eye at any Microsoft OS in between: either WinXP Pro or 7.

Gaming or not, it is exactly as Nupe said...apps that take advantage of a quad core, as most now do, would have one dedicated to them making multitasking much faster. While I am not a fan of "kits" when I build machines, I do also recommend an SSD (solid state harddrive) just for the OS with a backup physical drive (I currently run Seagate Blacks) for storage. Putting the OS on a SSD makes the typically sluggish load time for any flavor of Windows a ... well ... flash! (<==nerds will get it).

The more cores you have in the processor, the easier it is to run multiple programs at once, as each core is responsible for a specific program only. For the operating system, I'd suggest that you stick with XP Pro if you're only going to get a dual-core processor, as any of the features added by Win7 are rather heavy on the processor. But if you get a quad core, Win7 is my suggestion, especially if you don't play a lot of games (as most of the older games have difficulties running with Win7).

[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by ron h from Saturday, April 16, 2011 8:23:51 AM)
[ron h] Saturday, April 16, 2011 8:23:51 AM

When exploring the different types of processors available, I was told that for my needs a dual core is really all I need and that a quad core would be overkill as I don't really do any on-line gaming.  Can you tell me what the benefit of going quad over dual is for me?  Also, these barebone kits don't come with an OS, so I'm debating between sticking with XP Pro and Windows 7.  What do you suggest?

J.D., Don't feel like your alone, all this is a lot easier than it appears (or so it seems).  You just need to decide on what it is you want from your system, investigate what will give it to you and let everything else fall into place.

Funny you should say the "no camera" bit. I just gave one of my old ones to a buddy with the same problem. No WEBCAM though? Not even built into the computer itself? What kind of dinosaur are you typing on, man? Even Hellrider has a webcam. Like my old digital cameras, you can't even give them away. I have a number of those too. JD.
A little late with this one but sorry to hear about your cat. I had to put three of them to sleep within a year of each other.
One was 15, one 11, and the other 9. That really sucked so I know how you feel. I said I would never get pets again because
of how much it bummed me out but the wife and I now have another. The plan is one at a time from here on out. Take care.
[Budred] Wednesday, April 13, 2011 10:43:34 PM
A friend of mine has an African Grey parrot. Definitely the coolest, craziest, meanest bird I've ever seen. I loved looking at him because he
looked so evil. My friends wife was the only one who could touch it.
t bit my friend on the hip once and bruised him and drew blood. It did the
same thing to his finger once. The crazy part was the shit this bird could say. My friend had other cats and dogs and a couple of parakeets.
The bird could imitate all of them. It was the craziest thing to listen to a bird meow, or bark or imitate the other birds. He could say more than
I can remember but some of the shit he said.
"Pickles give me gas" (that was my idea)
"Hey Gary, Steelers suck" (My man actually got mad about that one)
"Whats Uppppp"(Just like the beer commercials)
"Fire one up"
coughing sounds
imitating my friend saying "Ah fuck it then"
Yelling at the dog "Redddd!!!!"
when the phone rings"Hello, (pause) pretty good"

Alot more. If someone told me about this bird and I never saw it I would never believe how much this bird can say. They say they are the second
smartest bird out there. They can count to 7(I think), they can dinstinguish colors, and remember hundreds of phrases. I think my friend said they
would live to be around 80 years old. I'm not making any of this up. I haven't seen my friend or the bird in at least five years. I'm sure he's still kickin.

Now "living as long as we do" is a double-edged sword. Always kept me from adopting an African grey parrot. They typically bond to one person and live so long that it is pretty much a given that you have to write them into your will as they will, most certainly, outlive you.

Yes, our animals are always there for us without reservation - unlike people. They give us so much and ask for so very little. They will always be our "babies" no matter how old (or white) they get and I think that is why it is so heartbreaking when they leave us. Oscar sounds wonderful J.D., you were both lucky to find each other.

I know how you must feel right now, as my family's dog died in late November last year. It was a true shock after having her around for 13 years... suddenly there isn't a small, furry friend to greet you when you get home.

It's very awful to lose a pet after a long time.

Thanks to Metallian,I agree with you man.   And thanks to you Becks, yeah it really hurts to lose an animal regardless if it was his time or not,it just really sucks. I guess I was lucky to have him for 14 and a half years, but I would feel the same had I had him for 24 years ect..  Never again will I ever see a cat that had passion for food like this one,it was unreal.

He was really like a dog to say the least but charrished food more than a dog.  I've always had an extra likings for animals. As I mentioned before we are getting a puppie on Friday and had planned to for some time, just a coincidence I lose one on Monday and another one comes into my life on Friday. Animals are cool, much better than people.  Thanks for the kind words Becks.

And HRMG,it sounds like you have a wonderful German Shepherd, and yeah its good you celebrate each day with him,but on the flip side he may have a little longer than you know so our fingers are crossed. I guess there is no such thing as "long enough".  We could have our animals for 35 years and it would still hurt as much to lose them.  It was harder losing my animals than it was losing my own mother and father and I know that sounds strange but its true. Perhaps the reason being is that I was able to talk to my parents while they talked back,my animals can't say anything and perhaps thats what makes it more heartbreaking...I don't know but it really sucks.

Hey, HRMG,Guido and Spa....thanks alot guys.  Yeah it freaking "SUCKS" to lose an animal. I'm so glad I put him down today,as I mentioned today was the very first sign of him starting to suffer, after today he wouldn't of had any quality of life and for me to hang onto him for another 3 weeks would of been selfish as he would of been suffering. The hard part is missing an animal you've had for 14 years. Truley lame.

As with all my animals in the past I was holding him when he passed and it was peaceful. I buried him in my back yard next to my other animal I had to put down in December. It was hard digging another hole. "SIGH".

But life must go on. Its funny that a little animal holds so much importance to your life ect...  the irony of it all is that we are getting our puppie Friday or Saturday as we had planned for a long time, but we couldn't take him home because he was too young but now will be 10 or 11 weeks old. Yeah losing an animal really freaking sucks man. Thanks again for your kind words my friends.

Something pissing me of today is that I had to put down my other and last animal I have. Oscar was my 14 and a half year old cat and my heart is once again 'broken". "SIGH".  It was his time, and I "REFUSE" to let a poor animal "suffer". Today was the first signs of him starting to suffer, and again I refuse to let him suffer.

Its not the first animal I've had to put down nor will be the last, but its fucking hard to do.  Its a part of life obviously, and I know all the things that goes with it. It just pisses me off that I had to wake up and realize I'll not have him anymore. Fucking lame. Maybe the troll can laugh at me while I'm  feeling down and out.  Not asking for anybody's sympathy,I'm just posting this to release some stress. Its a shame that animals don't live longer, thats for sure.
