Even the slightest possbility of snow this time of year is just too depressing! But then, it does nothing but rain here and the weather man says we are down on precip for the year? Is he a loony? I could mud bog in certain spots of my yard! and the creek is way up! But then again he said twice the other morning there was a chance of rain in the morning, of both times it had been pouring rain since 4:00 am. Go outside and look, is better than what the weather man says! You're absolutely right, Soy...even those that do care a little can do more, but it needs to be a global effort to have any impact...and I also think that the more we send objects through to space the more damage we do to the ozone layer and that, too has an impact on global weather conditions...but then you look at the simple choices like paper or plastic at the grocery store, plastic hangs around forever, but then we need thousands of trees instead...damned if you do, damned if you don't (even though both are reusable and recycleable)... THEY'RE THE TYPE-HEY,AS LONG AS IT'S NOT IN MY BACKYARD,I DON'T CARE-IMAGINE FOR A MOMENT,AS AN EXAMPLE, IF THESE TYPES BELONGED TO AN ANT COLONY (I KNOW,ANTS PROBABLY ARE INSIGNIFICANT TO THEM)...HOLY F$#K,THEY'D GET THE BOOT THE FIRST DAY,NOT EXACTLY TEAM PLAYERS,WOULD THEY BE?... | | ronhartsell wrote: | | I know it don't seem like a lot, but that's a mighty big shelf (1,000,000 sq. mi. ??), so if it melts 1/2" off the top evenly across every hour or two and it all flows in the same direction, could that create flood conditions?? I know they all just like to scare the hell out of ppl, but it's something to think about... | | Head banger wrote: | | yeah, that would happen if you could get a fast melt. need a big torch to do it though. considering the temp you would need to melt it all in a summer, the flood would be the least of our worries | | ronhartsell wrote: | | Well, if the shelf is melting rapidly, it would flood then eventually even out, but there would be initial flooding on the shores closest to the new water source...the article didn't say that this area would be permanently flooded, just that it would initially flood, then recede of course for the very reason you mentioned...but that's a lot of inches to rise for such a big area...BTW, it was the NE shores of N. America specifically... | | Head banger wrote: | | HA!!!
it kills me when I see these things in the news. I read one a while ago that said that if all of antarctica melted (which it wont) sea level would rise by 2 feet in the south pacific, 12 feet in hawii, 8 feet in japan, 6 feet in england. WTF??? probably if you could get water to spread like that it would, but last I checked, it spreads evenly. never noticed that if you dump a bucket of water into a puddle it all goes to one side, floods the ant colony and the other side stays level?? | | ronhartsell wrote: | | You're right, I was in a hurry getting ready for work...the xact area that would be affected is the north eastern shores, not on a global level...the article was in the Yahoo news, it might still be there and maybe I read it wrong, but just the possibility that it could happen is a little scary... | | Head banger wrote: | | Ron, there isnt enough ice there to make the levels of the great lakes rise 20 inches if you put all the water in there today. if all of antarctica melted they would be on the right track, but most parts of antarctica are growing, not shrinking | | ronhartsell wrote: | | A recent report claims that if the ice sheet in Greenland continues to melt at it's current pace, sea levels could rise anywhere from 12-20 inches...that would be devestating!!! |

Yeah, for now it's not, but the weather peeps are saying it could go down to approx 3C overnight and it could get quite interesting if there is any form of precip. I'll post pix if it does snow. hahahahaha |
