I have to admit because I choose to just listen, I get messed up on what song I am on at times unless its one of my recent loves. The whole album will come to me but the manuscript does nothing for me, I have to hear it.

Maybe I just didn't get it.  It is my first listen, but to me it feels odd between songs like "Death", "Conquest", "Persecution" and "Exiled".

I didn't feel is was out of place, I listened to the whole thing while cleaning house today with the third LP in Rotation being Halford but I realy liked it. I enjoyed myself emensly.

That is a song that would probably be much better on a different record.  It could and should stand on it's own.  Not surrounded by all the ass kicking that's going on around it.  When I get through the whole thing, I'm going back to it and listen to it on it's own.  By then I'll probably have the proper B.A.C. to accept it !  HA !   Seriously, I think it's a good song, just out of place.

It's really strange.  It's like I've heard the songs before.  I can sing along with many parts and I'm just feeling the pitch changes in the vocals.  I'm no singer by any means, but I'm feeling where they are going.  This is really fun !

As a song unto itself, "War" doesn't stand out much for me.  However, it is VERY powerful.  Not only that, it helps tie the story together into "Pestilence & Plague" and creates a good deal of tension which is now being relieved with the opening of "P&P".  A lot of thought went into the arrangements.  That's obvious.

Hello to all! It has been forever and a day since I posted anything on the boards but thought Nostradamus worthy of posting my two cents (and that may be all it is worth) on the latest Priest disc.

After multiple listenings, I like it very much. I agree with a number of reviews and comments regarding the length of the disc. I do think that it could have been pared down a bit but that's just my opinion. I think it has more to do with the kind of mood I'm in when I listen to it. Sometimes I skip over the more slow tempo numbers to listen to the mid-tempo to the rockers. Other times, I listen to every track. I may create my own CDR with my faves.

I discovered Prist in 1980 and have been a die-hard fan ever since.  I really commend and applaud them for adding elements (keyboards, strings, etc.) that fell by the way side from British Steel on (for the most point). If one thinks about it, many view Priest's creative highpoints from Sad Wings through Hell Bent for Leather (although we all know that they've had classics throughout their entire careers) and Nostradamus reminds me very much of 70's era Priest. 

Honestly, I have been waiting for Priest to evolve more musically while still creating music with cajones. I think this was a very worthwhile risk, gamble, etc. They have always taken risks and this is no exception. At this point in their careers they can still expand their sound, and still remain a Metal band. Whatever they create, I'll buy it.

This is the best Judas Priest album ever!
Defenders is my favorite of all time and that album changed my life.Now that was when i was 15!Here we are in 2008 and Priest has done it once again!I've waited since 1984 for them 2 put another album to kick my ass and they did!This album has all i ever wanted in a musical release,absolutely brilliant!

Having now listened to Nostrodamus several times, the second disc the most, I'd have to say I absolutely love it. My wife who normally tells me to turn it down or off wants a copy for her car. Even my kids like it. Honestly if this album had come out in the early 80's it probably would have sold millions of copies. I understand how people may be bored/irritated by the twiddly interludes, WASP's Crimson Idol always bugged me for the same reason. But to me this album is different, it isn't the album you put on to rock out [ although in places you can] but we put it on last night to kick back and have a few drinks [ just as KK predicted we should], and ended up listening to and talking about it for six hours. Alone, as others have said, is a standout track. I do miss the high pitched scream, but the one on Nostrodamus the song, more than makes up for it. Its great, only time will tell if it becomes my favourite Priest album [ Its impossible to choose as they all have their own merits], but I'm delighted that the band stepped outside the square to make it.

Can't believe I'm sitting here reading about the possibility of Judas Priest with an orchertra...opera! Man, it just doesn't work for me. After this CD they really need to go back to the basics that got them this far. I think I heard KK say in an interview about the possibility of a second part to Nostradamus. I hope not. Who knows, Painkiller may have been the last really great Priest album with Rob Halford. Thats 18 years since we got something really great from this band. Way too long in my opinion. I really don't think you should have to listen to something 10 times or on a perfect sound system or with headphones before you start to like it. You shouldn't have to go in and edit out certian tracks to try and come up with something you like. I think that shows how off base this new CD is. Yes they tried somethig different,but that doesn't make this CD good. Like I said before, they need to go back to what made them great. Painkiller, Screaming for Vengeance, Stained Class, British Steel type metal.

The Montreal date is August 12th at the Bell Centre with Voivod opening. The MASTERS OF METAL is the following night in T.O. - it's just Priest coming. Tix go on sale this Saturday (June 28th) at Noon. Why this isn't up on the tour info is a good question LOL!

It's funny...a lot of people are complaining about the slow and mid-tempo songs, but those are my favorites. For example, the song "Nostradamus" doesn't do much for me, but I love "Alone" and "War." 

Also, some people have complained about "boring, unnecessary" acoustics and keyboards. LOL, I actually like them!

Just goes to show you how music is in the ear of the beholder.

I like what you have to say Healer - for me, this disc is a throwback to the "Sad Wings" and "Sin After Sin" days with the mid tempo/acoustic tracks. 

I, for one, have been looking forward to Priest -as a band, not just Glenn and K.K.- getting back in touch with this side of their songwriting. Dreamer Deceiver, Before the Dawn, Here Come The Tears etc. have been some of my faves over the years and much of Nostradamus touches on that. Shadows In The Flame and Peace are beautiful intros. I think that over time this disc will grow on the skeptical. There is much to digest here, but I love this disc more and more with each listen. They just announced the Montreal date, so that saves my trip down the 401 to Toronto. YES! 

Give it more of a chance - maybe the next listen will be the one that wins you over.

THE ANSWER - for all those still scratching their heads over the latest offering from JP is, I think, perhaps one caused by the pacing on the album.

It is, after all, very very long, with some considerable mid-paced / ballad-y numbers. My advice is to edit it down to a slimmer, meaner & faster 80mins (single disc) version.

Select the following running order on to a CDR, or ipod playlist etc, and hear a much more familiar, agressive & traditional metal-esq  sounding release.

5.   Sands of Time
6.   Pestilence & plague
7.   Death

Now, I know there will be many out there screaming (for vengeance) that this is sacriledge & not how the album is intended to be listened to, but, then they are already the converted, and what we are trying to do here is get as many people on board as possible. I myself, do find the whole double disc a rather flabby affair, I'm sorry to say, and do actually prefer the above edited version which I find is a far pacier & exciting listen - much more what I was hoping for.

I see it as something similar to the cinema release versions of the Lord Of The Rings films, as opposed to their much weightier Director's cut DVDs.

As for the missing tracks, well once you've grown to love the above you can re-incert them later, or visit them individually & see how they shape up having acclimatized yourself to this new world of the metal gods.

"Nostradamus" is even better than I hoped for. No weak songs, fantastic variety, one of Halfords best vokal performances ever..."Defenders of the Faith" has always been my favourite album, but "Nostradamus" has potential to be my new favourite. How on earth can a band achieve such a monster 34 years after their first album?

Well. Finally got the new album a couple of days ago. At first i was pretty pissed off and felt there was way to much sweep picking however i decided that was pretty insignificant lol . Anyway after about 10 listens i can safely say Priest have shown they can pull off any musical challenge with ease , totally awesome CD with some really cool songs. Only song I hated was that bloody song  death , dunno why though maybe it will grow on me . Love the guitar ,Robs singing is still awesome. Scotts drums are really cool however i had great difficuty hearing good ol' Iain on the bass ......dunno maybe others feel this way or maybe am just stupid hehe

anyway 10/10 for Nostradamus (except for that one song ) as it was totally epic and really emotional.

Hi everyone!
I'm pleased to say that the new conceptual album is a MasterWork. Only (personal) failure were expectations that conceptual album will be built with myriads of interesting guitar riffs like ones in Stained Class album f.ex. Melodies and Rhytms and Atmosphere are formed differently. It took a little time and confusion when heard. After few rounds of listen songs are taking shape in mind. They are not pop-songs nor conservative metal songs either. Many of them resemble very old memories of JP music. There is somewhere solo reminds one in Tyrant. And yes, there is less share of time for guitars but still many good solos and melodies. Because album has really lot of stuff and parts. One part is that reoccurring simple melody theme in various forms that reminds music-box-melody throughout a movie "Per qualche dollaro in pi�". Not only thing this album screams to be visualized in some way. Movie or designed "opera" concert. Storyline is that good and well organized. Finally, "Nostradamus" is state-of-art metal music that does not so much make me to stick up guitar than to solely enjoy and listen eyes wide shut. Do not dare to listen "The Four Horsemen" just before nightsleep. "Enter Sandman" was re-classified as a new lullaby standard :)

I completely agree with you.  At first I was a little surprised listening to the new album.  Not typical Priest metal.  But I was pleasantly surprised.  This album just shows how talented these men are. You may agree with me or not but I love hearing the slower music of Priest, I find it quite beautiful and thoughtful.  I felt right away that the music itself was outstanding (yes lack of guitar solo's but KK and Glenn are playing synthesized guitars so we are just hearing them differently).  I feel Rob uses his voice wonderfully on this album - not overextending himself.  I am very proud of the guys. Not typical so of course there is going to be critics but then again maybe new fans?

I have seen other bands use "local" orchestra's like Scorpions in Berlin and Styx with the Youth orchestra.  I definitely believe  it will only be in very selective cities and areas so if I were people I'd start saving for travel plans. They mentioned Royal Albert Hall.  I went to see them there in 2006 and it's an incredible place.  I would love to travel to London again.  I'm also thinking maybe NY City for at least one of the US dates.  I can't wait, I think whatever they do it will be amazing.

Good point, EB. Not to mention that it is incredibly difficult to do orchestral music when you are not accomplished in that field. Let's face it, Priest are a Metal band. Talented, of course. Above most, surely. But orchestra and opera are very specialized. Just because Rob went into the studio and did a few bits does not make him an opera singer. To the contrary, I love Rob's voice but I do not like his opera. My opinion, of course.

Most musicians, and especially vocalists, like to believe that they are versatile. Vocalists tend to think they are capable of any genre. Rob, for all his talent and ability, is really not a true opera singer. He has many of the special qualities that make an opera singer, but not all of them. Moreover, he has spent thirty plus years doing Metal. That is what he does best.

I think the new album is great. How they will pull it off onstage remains to be seen. Perhaps they will rely heavily on taped music? I cannot say. There are a couple songs that clearly lend themselves to a Priest show with little difficulty and only minor changes. I am sure the guys will find a way to make it a great show.

I'm sure most of Nostradamus will benefit from a live situation too, as I feel many parts will come across much heavier than they have on record. Not too sure how they will do this all live though - with the best will in the world, using a full orchestra is a tall order (that's an awful lot of people to take on tour with you) & I'm guessing far too expensive. If they do decide to go down this road, then I would presume that only selective dates would be used (ie; one or two major cities in each country - Kiss only did their Symphony project in Melbourne). Much more realistic is the normal solution of backing tracks, guitar synths & a keyboard player which can travel to all and sundry.

Well, considering Glenn and KK produced the album it is somewhat surprising the guitars are toned down.  I think they were going more for mood and trying to tell a story.  I think they concentrated more on Rob's voice, tone and the drums (which I have to say Scott outdid himself on this one).  I think if they highlighted themselves everyone would have called them selfish and still dished them and called it just another Priest album, nothing new, heard it before etc. etc. etc..... It's a catch 22.  Damn if the do, damn if they don't. I think the guitars sound fine and love all the changes and sounds they've produced within a lot of the songs. They produced this with the intend of doing an orchestrated show and when they do I think it will be awesome and people will completely understand what they were going for.  I guess I'm just being defensive because I absolutely love this Album and just don't understand why people don't see  and hear what I see and hear.

Well put, Betrayer...and I agree with you to an extent.  There are spots where I would like to hear more guitar than orchestra, but still...everything fits very nicely.  My understanding is they are going to be playing Prophecy and Death on the current tour.  As for certain songs kind of sounding like Iron Maiden in some places, no offense meant, but ummm...who cares?  Maiden are the masters of such epics (see Aces High, Flight Of Icarus, and Paschendale for a mere smidgen of their abilities there), but I think it's more of Rob and the guys knowing how stuff fits a song - which is a lot more than you and I know.

I think my main problem with this album is the guitars (or rather lack of them - rhythm guitars, certainly). There are a lot of catchy hooks, and memorable choruses etc, but when it comes to some of the guitar work, it appears to be so far down in the mix & in some places so washed over by the keyboards (or guitar synths) that the word "tame" or "lame" spring to mind. 

This is a Judas Priest album after all, and one would expect rather more than the occasional, and in places, almost apologetic, toned down riffing. The rhythm guitar is the main weapon of attack for any self-respecting heavy metal band, and also gives many a song a true set of balls. Without it "vicious" can easily become "vacuous" or turn "titantic" into "timid".

Before I'm scorned as just another "in your face, all the time merchant", I would just like to add that two of my very favourite Priest tracks are "Run Of The Mill" & "Dreamer Deceiver" which have more than their fair share of light & shade - something I very much appreciate in a song, or two - not a whole album though!

Nostradamus is a good album, an excellent soundtrack score album even, I'm just not so sure how great a Judas Priest album it is (Conquest, Pestilance & Plague, plus Future Of Mankind even sound like Iron Maiden in places), but I shall keep listening to it, and will go & see them on tour in the UK (in 2009, hopefully - saw them at Download 2008, and they were brilliant!), and if they want to do the whole album live - fine, I'll be there!

Metal Jesus: You said the the only complaint that people can come up with is that it's too slow. I disagree (but I see where you're coming from). I think Nostradamus is a very good album, but not great. I actually like the mid-tempo. The keyboards and orchestrations give it a great feel and I like Halford's more restrained, soulful voice. The lyrics are great sometimes and only ok at other times. But--as much as it pains me to say--I'm not being hooked with the guitar harmonies and solos. I've listened to the album many, many times, but only a few songs hit me right from the start and only a few more have grown on me.

I still applaud the band for trying something different...I think they were moderately successful in doing so. Some goods, some bads. I would put this album in the middle of the pack with the other Priest albums. I still support them 100%. I'm seeing them in concert later this summer for, I think, the 5th time. I hope they come out with at least one more album.

I respectfully need to disagree with you, dream...The Elder wasn't that well written (A Dark Light and I stand out as being sub-standard tunes to me).  Also, no one wanted to hear Kiss do a concept album, especially since it came on the heels of Unmasked.  That was foolish to say the least.  Kiss would've been much better served following Ace's idea of making a strong rock album, and then maybe they could've done the concept album thing afterwards.

As for Nostradamus, I think it more than holds it's own against several Priest albums and even then, it shouldn't have too b/c it's nothing like any of them.  I'm not a musician in any sense but I found plenty of great songs that whet my metal appettite and let the band take me on a musical journey through the life and times of Nostradamus (no, drugs were not involved ummkay?).

Just take the album for what it is, and stop comparing it to other songs. THAT is why some people hate it.  They just want Excited, Freehwheel Burning and Painkiller again.

Well, I can definitely appreciate that people have different oppinions and might not like the new album but I just don't get how anyone can say there is no power behind the songs or that they just "trudge" along. I guess people reviewing just aren't musicians or something. Musicly I think this is their best production ever! I find the more Ilisten to it, which is a lot, I hear more and I get blown away all over again at the brilliance of these guys. Unfortunately I think a lot of these people won't give it more then a couple of listens which is a real shame.  These guys are the Metal Gods!

From what I've heard of the album so far, and I still haven't heard anything beyond the VH1 leak, I don't think it is that bad except for that really awful wanking ballad I forgot the name of. If the band members were true to themselves and wrote all this stuff from Nostradamus being true to themselves and having fun doing it,then I guess it is ok. 

I wasn't expecting Painkiller II, though I expected a sharper album, less keyboards and more attention to the instruments themselves, inspired rather than subjected to the concept. 

In fact, I could do without Halford's vocals in most of the songs and wished he'd concentrate in quality rather than interrupting good instrumental moments. A concept album doesn't need to follow the rules that short songs usually go by. 

By the sound of the synths and computerized jibba-jabba, it seems Judas Priest will soon launch their own videogame - Nostradamus - in which the central character must evade obstacles, kill puritans and gather enough cabbalistic books to be able to perform spells and incantations to save his hide and escape to the future - next level. 
This he won't do alone, as two she-witches, strongly reminescent of KK Downing and Glen Tipton, will come to his aid when you press F1.

An interesting review of Nostradamus from Amazon.UK that I recently found and, I have to admit, so far, I'm tending to agree with.

Having bought Judas Priest's albums as & when they have been released since 1980 I was looking forward to this release with both anticipation & trepidation . A concept album is something I do appreciate , if done well as in Queensryche's Operation : Mindcrime ; Nostradamus ,unfortunately , is something different . Of the 23 tracks , 9 are intros or segues , meaning that each track has a very similar beginning i.e Rob Halford singing softly over a rising single note ( synthesised or orchestral ) with a light arpeggio or strumming on either electric or acoustic guitar .

I am all for bands being adventurous & experimental but originality is also an important facet . Perhaps I was expecting this release to be leaning towards an Opeth or Porcupine Tree progression , what with the Nostradamus story being tackled . However , they seem to have gone in the other direction . The majority of the tracks are mid paced sludges that are almost indistinguishable from one another which , to my ears , sounded more like the current crop of European , female fronted , goth-rock bands . The ballad "Lost Love " is perhaps the worst JP song I have ever heard ( including the hiccup that was the Turbo album ). In fact ,if it were not for Rob Halford's distinctive vocals I would be hard pressed to identify the band as being Judas Priest .

It was only the title track , the penultimate song on the album , that actually sounded like a genuine Priest piece of heavy metal but by that stage one has had to endure 90 minutes of music that on each listening ( twice at the writing of this )I found myself suppressing yawns . Something I had never asscociated with a JP album .

The packaging of the super deluxe version is beautiful ( no exclusive poster in my copy though )& the artwork by Mark Wilkinson I found more impressive than the actual music within . It is obvious by the production values that a great deal of time & effort has gone into this recording but for me it is the actual songs that are important . Apart from "Visions" , which could very well be the single for this release , I could not recall a single melody or tune . Perhaps in a live setting the songs may mature , though apart from two or three tracks , I cannot see them working outside the context of the Nostradamus concept .

So if you are expecting classic Judas Priest riffs & melodies than this might not be for you . If you want 104 minutes of average modern Euro-metal with an interesting concept than dive right in . Unfortunately I can see "Nostradamus" sitting next to the above mentioned "Turbo" album in my JP collection with little or no rotation on my stereo in the coming years .

I have to say that i'm really disappointed with this album.I have listened to this a few times,and there are only a couple of songs that i like.I guess i was hoping for something more.The songs just seem to drag on and on,with no power what so ever.Now this is just my opinion but after waiting this long for new material,i was hoping for something much better.

I'm with you!  Alone is definitely one of my favorite songs. gives me goosebumps just thinking of it!  I have not been able to stop listening to this album since they started streaming it at "The Leak"  I am definitely obsessed with it.  Have you all checked out the War video?  Awesome!  I could see them doing a "Heavy Metal" type movie about Nostradamus.

I have to say that this was a very nice "surprise"!

Does anyone else out there think that after all is said and done for the boys, that music history will place this disc within the "Top 5" essential Priest discs? I have been listening to this none stop for the past week and think that this is a brilliant piece of work. It shows a lot of labour and thought went into this project and it was nice to see them taken out of their comfort zone and give us this result.

The first tracks that got to me were WAR - especially because I was geared up for a heavy take on this topic - yet they let Scott shine on this and went for mood. Excellent! Then it has to be NEW BEGINNINGS. Absolutely my favorite track so far - it just has a hypnotic feel to it. The rest are starting to gel as I find myself humming the verses and choruses during my everyday routines (always a good sign!).

I look forward to seeing if they actually plan on performing this from start to finish - it would be one tour for the history books, that much is certain. I hope that the positive feedback keeps on coming and that the rest of you are enjoying this disc as much as I am....

I'm a relativly new fan but as it stands I love all of priest works, save for a few songs. Just because I'm only sixteen doesn't mean I don't apprieciate this cd. I don't even know how many times I've listened to it since I bought it Tuesday morning. I think its there best album, I don't care what others say.
