I am going back over Xmas. Plan to stay in Paris but might take a short trip to Normandy as I have never been. Lemme know if you want that dropbox link to see the rest of those bunkers as well. Thanks, Becks. While Guitardude is a self-proclaimed WWII afficionado, I didn't realize that you were. Oddly enough, though, there is a sign that posts every country who fought with the allies and shows the direction and relative miles to get there. I saw NZ and immediately thought of you! Don't think I got a pic of the sign (they were all pointing different directions, after all) but the tour was WAY kewl as is your story about your grandfather and great-great uncle. Had I only known....
The city was just outside Saint Malo in Brittany. The US bombed the walled city of Saint Malo to the ground (some 80% destroyed) only to find that there were only some 7 Germans there! Still some unexploded landmines on the nearby islands.
I am going back over Xmas. Plan to stay in Paris but might take a short trip to Normandy as I have never been. Lemme know if you want that dropbox link to see the rest of those bunkers as well. Quite impressive! Even the few shots I posted (with the travelling JP cross) you can see shell marks on that, what..., 2" thick piece of steel? Yup, impressive.
ps. BTW. It just happened to be VA Day when I went! Tour guide didn't mention a thing about it. Only learned when I asked why the banks were all closed!
