They are both great guitar players. If it came down to just those two i would have to go with Tipton. |

A few years ago now I bought a classic albums DVD based on British Steel. On that DVD Glenn mentions that the band got negative feedback when they started playing improvised leads on stage.
I can see why... those leads are as precious to me as a fan, as any of the signature riffs. Whereas the stage belongs to Rob during the verse/chorus/verse (so to speak), Glenn and KK speak in their solos... and what they have to say hits me in a way that words never could. Some of those leads (Rock Hard, Ride Free... Run of the Mill are two are that spring to mind immediately) almost cause me physical trauma.
I love Metallica too... I think that Kirk did some great stuff early on. Orion and Fade to Black are a couple of examples of Kirk doing what I love him doing. I just think that things had started to dull a little by the Black album. I know his leads were rushed on the Justice, but I still loved them. They still had that Kirkness, through which you could hear the influence of Satriani.
The Black album was a change in direction and, I guess the solos needed to fit the material. The band was going in a more mainstream direction and Kirk was playing a bluesier style to suit.
I can see that he had to play to the material, and maybe my feelings on this are as coloured by the fact that Metallica had stopped doing the heavy shit that I loved so much, but it just wasn't the same. The solos were no longer as emotive and nor did they showcase his abilities the way that I enjoyed.
So I guess that in my own (very humble) opinion... if I were to be forced to pick a favourite of two guitarists that I have been listening to for over 20 years... Give me Glenn (and KK) any day. Not only did they help to pioneer a genre... but they are still right there at the forefront, flying the flag high.
Each new Priest album has me salivating at the prospect of what the dynamic duo are going to fire at me... and I have not been disappointed yet. I can't wait to get my hands on the next masterpiece to see what magic they've conjured this time... and I certainly can't wait to catch them on stage in a month or so.

Kirk Hammet is better. Glen Tipton maybe plays really good guitar solos too, but I don't like him so much. |
