Yeh, you would definately be a little off on that end of the world date and also pay a heavy penalty for that gluten buffet.
You wouldn't need fireworks on the 21st.
HA! That would be akin to all those fools who spent all their money in expectation that the world would end according to some prophet years ago. Guess what, following day, the sun rose and they were broke!
Me going gluten-happy on December 20 would have a much more ... um ... "colorful" effect! LOL!!! Nope, I think I'll keep all my gluten / beer drinking here in the JP Cafe and play it safe. Plus, the people and music are both better here. I don't think the Maya ever predicted PRIEST!!

Aha! Someone knows the "long count" of the Maya calendar!
In Mexico, we have to read the Chilam Balam as required reading. It is a colonial work that describes, in part, the "short count." However, to understand it, we had to also learn the "long count" to be able to differentiate.
Right you are but it is actually translated from Maya-Quiché to Colonial Spanish more as "the end of a cycle." The "long count" calendar count basically starts over! Big whoop!

I always laugh when I get questions about Brazil: "do they use the same calendar as Americans?" "Er, no, they are in the year of the mongoose." "Is it close to Germany?" So, stock up on Marmite, eh? Ok, also good to know. If any comes my way I am sure that it is sitting on a store shelf somewhere in which case I'll start hoarding.
Woops totally missed this haha! Crayfish is a common thing but not cheap (I don't eat seafood so blegh lol), wild boar isn't that common but it's yum and is starting to show up in restaurants more regularly (a burger chain here, Burger Fuel, had a wild boar burger for a while - Craig thought it was excellent), as for eels, it depends, I don't think it's that commonly eaten other than in more rural areas, possibly amongst the Maori people of those areas, I don't know. I certainly wouldn't eat it, too gross lol. Huhu grubs are bush food, they're pretty easy to find and edible if you're lost in the bush. They can be boiled and apparently taste a bit like peanut butter. Huhu grubs are not that big and not entirely pleasant apparently so definitely wouldn't be eaten as a meal on their own unless one was lost in the bush and starving.
The staple of NZ food used to be roast lamb (or mutton), but lamb is quite expensive now so people are going away from the traditional sunday roast - I love a roast dinner, chicken, beef, it's all yum. Meat and three veg type meals are very common too, but people branch out more these days with their food. Fish and chips is the big takeaway here lol, it's cheap here too compared to the UK.
Then there is the old favourite, Marmite LOL!!!!!! Which is in extremely short supply because the factory which makes it was damaged by last years earthquake in Christchurch and they can't make anymore till July, argh! lol.

Crayfish should be pretty easy but do you have to catch your own boar and eel? How about huhu beetles? Do you eat that as a full meal or is it a side-dish? Do tell! Curious minds want to know!
