Whenever i read a discussion about maiden and priest it always seems that it becomes an either or discussion. I think Maiden rocks, i think they are extremely talented and have done some amazing work. But personally I prefer Priest. I enjoy that Priest tries different things. After all if they weren't  a bit experimental they wouldn't have helped create a new genre of music! I think it speaks to the talent in the band that they can write songs that aren't all the same. I love the heaviest Priest stuff, Hellrider, Disident Agressor, Tyrant, etc. after all these songs helped create speed metal. But I always enjoyed the fact that unlike many metal bands (not MAiden of course) Halford can actually sing! And Tipton can play a melody! They can write a hook! It gives the music depth. I think Maiden has this ability also, which is why the "competition" between the fans seems odd to me. Both of these bands kick ass, they both have great range and have had incredible careers. And on top of it all...they are both still out on the road and making great music, why? Because they love what they do. Its why i at age 40 am still listening and I am very proud to listen to Priest...and Maiden.....it seems all the newer "musicians" want to be actors or athletes....anything but a musician, how many of todays "artists" will still be making music 30 years from now?

Ok, new Maiden's album is out, so everybody tis alking about it, but is not the same for a new Priests album. They are the best metal bands of ever, but why IM also if they make a 'burp' are immediately mentioned and why JP, also if they made Metal as we know it are not mentioned? Of course I'm thinking to Italy and just to make you well understand I would like to say you what happende three years ago.
In a small village near Rome, some guys organized a Metal fest with Italian Groups. I was here just because my parents are living there now. Me and my brother were talking with one of this guys about HM in general. We told him that JP are our preferite band and we don't like too much IM. He, of course, said the contrary, IM are the best metal band and JP are not very heavy, also if he didn't know them very well (!!!). My brother had in the car a copy of PAINKILLER and we made him to listen it.............................
Would you like to know what hapened after. Now he has all JP albums!!!! In Italy media push only IM and some other bands to say that Metal Kids are strange people. And is terrible to hear Metal maniacs (???) to say they don't know JP, is like to say I like making sex having never made it.
Frankly speaking I don't care too much. I love JP nd that's enough for me, but more consideration maybe would mean more concerts in Italy ?

Sorry JJ, I misunderstood what you were saying. Those casual fans only know 3 songs anyway, the ones played on the radio and they probably wouldn't recognize any band if they didn't already know the song. I've heard so many people say "I love such and such band!" and then a new song from that band comes on and they don't even recognize that it's the band that they "love" and even I know who it is and I'm not even a fan..... pretty sad in my opinion. Now Maiden isn't really played on the radio around here, so if you're a Maiden fan, you'll recognize anything as being Maiden because you have some of their albums and truly are a fan. Sometimes I think the fact that Priest is played on the radio is a double edged sword. Sure it brings in new fans.... but are they fans of Priest or just fans of radio Priest, liking whatever is popular at the time?

It was a question, not a statement. Based on the fact that HB thought that casual fans might not recognize some of their stuff at all.

Beat me to the punch, HRMG.

Not only can you tell that it is KK and Glenn irrespective of the song, one can even tell WHO is playing. Don't think that Glenn sounds like Glenn when he did his solo albums?! Halford doesn't sound like Halford? Uhhhh...what?

That is the funniest thing I've ever heard! Are you KIDDING ME? Priest doesn't have a signature sound???? What are you talking about? You don't think Glenn and KK have a "signature sound"? They are the only two guitarists on this planet that play in harmony the way they do. Many bands have tried to copy Glenn and KK and fail. Instantly I know that it's Glenn and KK. Even my 8 year old knows Rob's voice because NO ONE on this planet sounds like or will ever sound like Rob. Both my sons instantly recognize a Priest song as being Priest, even songs they have never heard before because of Rob, KK and Glenn. So Rob's voice and Glenn and KK aren't enough but somehow Maiden has a "signature sound"? LMFAO!

perhaps the die hard is not what we should be thinking of, but the average fan.  when you hear maiden, you know its maiden.  priest is so musicaly diverse that the casual fan might hear an album and have no idea its priest.

I agree jimmy, and I read your post under this one too. Hellrider is an optimist and I am a pessimist because I've been let down too many times. I remember getting the Point Of Entry LP in 1981 when I was 11 because I saw the Heading Out To The Highway video on MTV and remember being frustrated because of the lack of quality of song writting,so I bought British Steel and that held me over till the Screaming For Vengeance album,Defenders album and then the Turbo album really pissed me off "BIG TIME".

And then in 88' I bought Ram It Down and again like Point Of Entry I was let down because again there was only half an albums worth of good songs and the other half was crap including the Johnny B.Goode cover which is absolutely horrible which also pissed me off because they just had to throw that on the album (they did the Video well before the Ram It Down album was released).

And of course they gave us Painkiller which is obviously in the top 3 Judas Priest albums of all time, then Rob left as you said.   They put out Jugulator which isn't that great I know but at least it was a normal type of a metal album, then it takes them 4 fuckin years later to make the shitty "Demolition" album, crappy songs especially the Metal Messiah bullshit-rap dance beats that are in it,the album totally sucked and again was a let down.

They make Angel Of Retribution and just like you said they fuck themselves with Nostradamus,it just blows my mind, and to top it off after Nostradamus we couldn't even get a little "metal" from "Halford" because of the 'Winter Songs" bullshit, and now the Made Of Metal album is a extremely "G" rated watered down walt disney album.  No Maiden haven't been great either, but even thier albums after Powerslave are better than Turbo,Demolition and Nostradamus.  Its hard to keep the "faith" when the last piece of real "metal" we've got from both Priest and Halford was march 2005 with the AOR release,in 5 months from now it will be 6 years since AOR. Where is the "metal"?????

Yeah, I know that and I like songs on Point of Entry and Turbo as well and Fights first album and the first couple of Halford albums. I too find some of Maidens albums as boring as batshit. But I think it best explains their success. Priest are just as good, if not better ,musically and everyone knows that Rob is the best singer in metal with a much more diverse voice than Bruce, but some of the decisions they've made are unbelivable. I don't think Maiden really care what die hard Priest fans think of their music, they are more interested in catering to die hard Maiden fans, which is fair enough I think. But I know where you're coming from. I'm sure even some hard out Maiden fans are getting a bit bored with it. As a fan of both bands I am. In fairness though, I think The Final Frontier is not to bad, drags on a bit but there's some ok stuff on there.    [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by guidogodoy from Saturday, October 09, 2010 3:35:54 PM)
