Gaahl Interview
Götz Kühnemund of Germany's Rock Hard magazine (web site) recently conducted a revealing interview with GORGOROTH frontman Gaahl (real name: Kristian Espedal) in which the controversial black metal singer spoke publicly for the first time about his sexual orientation and his political beliefs. The chat, which appears in issue 258 of the magazine, was translated exclusively for BLABBERMOUTH.NET and appears below in its entirety.
For a long time GORGOROTH frontman Gaahl was deemed "the evil face of black metal." There was nothing anyone wouldn't put past him or try to pin on him. In his native Norway, he regularly finds himself on the front page of the biggest daily newspapers — as Satan personified or national bogeyman supreme. But now this villain of all people has outed himself as gay and reveals a few sides to his personality very few people would've thought possible.
Rock Hard: I think it's pretty ballsy that you've outed yourself as gay. I'd love to ask you two or three questions on the subject, if you don't mind.
Gaahl: "Sure, no problem."
Rock Hard: When I met you, we talked pretty extensively about an old JUDAS PRIEST live video that had made a strong impression on you. Was Rob Halford coming out a partial factor in your publicly acknowledging your own sexual preference?
Gaahl: "No. Rob Halford is a big musical inspiration for me, but nothing more. It doesn't feel to me as if I've outed myself because up until now the whole thing was a non-issue for me. All this evolved very naturally. I feel how I feel and I've never made any secret about it."
Rock Hard: But there are people that do not accept homosexuality. Isn't it true that you were in fact attacked by someone in the backstage area at Wacken [Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany]?
Gaahl: "That's something that went down behind my back. Nobody has ever said anything derogatory to my face in person."
Rock Hard: But King (GORGOROTH bassist) witnessed something and told me about it later (Note: there was a vicious brawl backstage at Wacken, which involved King among others. It was reportedly triggered by anti-gay remarks by a certain person who found himself in a hospital shortly thereafter). How are people treating you?
Gaahl: "Absolutely positive. I haven't felt any animosities directed toward me."
Rock Hard: But there are likely people on the right fringe of the black metal scene for whom you as an avowed homosexual have become an enemy.
Gaahl: "Possibly, yes. My idea of art, and black metal especially, is the depiction of honesty without compromise. I really don't care how other people react to it or the feelings it might provoke."
Rock Hard: There are people who were previously close to you that have contacted Rock Hard over the past few months offering "information" that would purportedly make you appear in a "whole new light." Since your homosexuality has become known, those sources have gone silent. Is there a connection?
Gaahl: "Yeah, most likely (laughs). It seems like I've pre-empted a few people. And for that I'm truly sorry. (laughs) But the information in question could also pertain to certain things that happened in the early '90s."
Rock Hard: You mean political things?
Gaahl: "Yeah."
Rock Hard: Since then you've openly admitted to having associated with radical right-wing circles back then.
Gaahl: "That's correct."
Rock Hard: Can you elaborate a bit more?
Gaahl: "These are things related to the past and the environment I found myself in at the time. In the early '90s, there were all these different youth gangs in Norway and one thing led to another. I was involved in gang fights and had false friends. It wasn't about any deep political convictions but rather about disassociation. Eventually it took on violent strains. I mean, gangs don't meet up to hold discussions."
Rock Hard: Would you call yourself a one-time die-hard Nazi?
Gaahl: "No, there was no political disposition — not with me nor any of my friends. But you had to profess allegiance to a certain group if you wanted to defend yourself and not get your ass kicked. I think we all — my friends at the time as well as myself — felt that way but some of them drifted off into politically extreme circles."
Rock Hard: Were there racially motivated incidents?
Gaahl: "It was all about gang affiliation. Who attacked first and who merely defended themselves is impossible to say after all this time. But there were definitely violent altercations. Some of us even had guns."
Rock Hard: When did your attitude toward these things change?
Gaahl: "It was a slow process that took years and not something that was triggered by any one thing. I've always had friends from different cultural backgrounds, hence I was exposed to different ways of thinking from the get-go. That's probably why I've never developed a deep set of political beliefs. But there have definitely been changes and an evolution in my thinking. I'm a different person today."
Rock Hard: Who are you exactly?
Gaahl: "I am I. I'm an individualist."
Rock Hard: Are there people in your circle of friends whom you'd call right-wingers?
Gaahl: "Yes, there are. Just like there are left-wingers. I don't judge people by their political beliefs. That may sound strange. The people I associate with are a motley crew and yet there is no violence. My friends have respect for each other just like I respect them."
Rock Hard: So we're talking about people who don't resort to violence when it comes to representing their convictions?
Gaahl: "Exactly. People evolve and accept differences. But now and then you do have to be patient with those you're close to (laughs). Not everybody always knows right away what's best for them. You have to give people leeway to experience things and grow because that how they might change their way of thinking."
Rock Hard: How are your right-wing friends responding to your being gay?
Gaahl: "There has been very little in terms of negative reactions. I'd like to think it's because my friends respect me enough to where that side of me doesn't bother them. If I was another type of guy, the reactions might be more drastic."
Rock Hard: You've been jailed several times. Did any of that have anything to do with your political or sexual background?
Gaahl: "No, absolutely not."
Rock Hard: I'm mentioning it because I forgot to ask you an important question during our last interview. When you talked about that "contract killer" that was out to get you, and whom you injured so badly that you had to go to prison over it, we never even talked about what provoked the attack in the first place. Who had it in for you?
Gaahl: "That was connected to my previous stint in prison. Someone whom I had caused trouble wanted to get revenge on me. But since he didn't want to get his own hands dirty for obvious reasons he hired someone who was supposed to attack me and in fact broke into my house carrying a weapon."
Rock Hard: Can you elaborate on what you mean by "causing trouble?"
Gaahl: "I was attacked in a bar, apparently because I had provoked someone with my appearance or something I said — someone with a reputation of being 'dangerous' himself. It turned into a physical altercation with serious consequences. I ended up in jail but the well-to-do 'victim' who had provoked me got off scot-free."
Rock Hard: Are you safe now from acts of revenge?
Gaahl: "I sure hope so. It makes no sense to be afraid of something you have no influence over anyway. Should it turn dangerous again down the line I'll simply have to deal with the situation."
Rock Hard: Sounds as if you've gotten rid of a lot of muck in your life.
Gaahl: (laughs) "Yeah, you could say that. I'm content all around with my situation right now. I love life at the moment."
Rock Hard: Would you say you're a happy person?
Gaahl: "Oh yes, most definitely."
Rock Hard: It's got to feel great: You are free and no longer have anything to hide.
Gaahl: "That's right. But I've never really hidden anything to begin with. It's just that I was never in love before."
Rock Hard: Never?
Gaahl: "No, not until last year."
Rock Hard: There is a girl who for a time lived with Jenny from Rock Hard in Norway, and she claimed to be your ex-girlfriend.
Gaahl: (laughs) "Then she lied. I was never ever together with anyone until last year."
Rock Hard: How old are you now?
Gaahl: "33."
Rock Hard: And you were a lone wolf up until age 32?
Gaahl: "Yes. I've just now reached puberty!" (laughs)
Rock Hard: Very cool that you talk so openly about these things.
Gaahl: "Well, that's the way it is." (laughs)
Rock Hard: You're a pretty strange bird, if I may say so. Anyone familiar with your image wouldn't think it possibly for you to have such an astute sense of humor.
Gaahl: "Thanks. I'm a strange dude, I know."
Rock Hard: Up until very recently, I had a totally different impression of you — and it wasn't exactly a positive one.
Gaahl: "Well, people tend to draw their own conclusions and create an image where other people are concerned. You always see the character you want to see."
Rock Hard: You sound very content and well balanced indeed. How is that gonna affect GORGOROTH?
Gaahl: "As far as my 'outing' goes — King was more nervous about it beforehand than I myself. He is glad that everybody's been cool about it. As far as the musical aspect is concerned — we've started work on the next album and I can't wait to write the lyrics for it. I already have ideas in my head but normally my lyrics just sort of 'happen.'"
Rock Hard: That's what I was getting at. Aren't you lacking the hatred to write the type of lyrics GORGOROTH is known for? Or are you tackling dark subject matters differently in the future?
Gaahl: "Time will tell. I take the view that you should always be moving forward and not standing still. It's gonna be different for sure but I can't say how exactly. A lot of what happens during the process of writing lyrics stems from the unconscience anyway. That is more honest than conscious planning."
Rock Hard: Isn't it difficult not to fool yourself? How do you know what originates from your unconscience and what comes from your conscience?
Gaahl: "It's difficult to differentiate indeed — but that's what the artistic aspect is all about. And I think I'm pretty well versed in it." (laughs)
Rock Hard: When I look at your overall concept — your provocative show, morbid aesthetics, and intellectual aspirations — I'm heavily reminded of CELTIC FROST. Can you relate to that sentiment?
Gaahl: "Yeah, even though I'm more familiar with the early CELTIC FROST classics, I know what you mean. We're pretty good friends (with them), and I'm gonna sink my teeth deeper into the last CELTIC FROST album as soon as I have some time."
Rock Hard: Martin [Ain] and Tom [Fischer of CELTIC FROST] were part of the reason why we decided to interview GORGOROTH for Rock Hard. They think very highly of you — and we of them. You can't be all that asinine if you have advocates like that.
Gaahl: "I'm happy about that. (laughs) I'm definitely seeing correlations between the two bands as well. We have a similar way of overstepping certain boundaries. I know Tom a little better than Martin but I see parallels between us and both of them."
Rock Hard: You just returned from Mexico, right?
Gaahl: "Yeah. We played two shows there. The fans were unbelievable as was the technical equipment – albeit in a negative sense." (laughs)
Rock Hard: Where do things stand legally right now as far as the name GORGOROTH is concerned?
Gaahl: "I can't say anything about it due to pending litigation. As long as there is no final ruling, both sides will continue to use the name GORGOROTH." (Note: Guitarist Infernus, the last remaining founding member, was fired by Gaahl and King last year but has so far refuses to relinquish the band name).
Rock Hard: Do you have a steady line-up now?
Gaahl: "Yes, we do. We'll make an official announcement shortly — it's gonna shock some people!"
Rock Hard: Positively or negatively?
Gaahl: (laughs) "Positively, as I see it. But I don't know how people are gonna react… It'll definitely be a surprise, and I'm excited about it. What I can confirm is that Frost (SATYRICON, 1349) will be the drummer on the new album. We view him as a full band member even though he doesn't figure in a creative role with us."
Rock Hard: That leaves two open spots in the band….
Gaahl: "Not open, merely unknown. I know, we come off as chaotic but we have everything under control. Believe it or not — there is a plan." (laughs)
Rock Hard: What else you got going on at present other than GORGOROTH?
Gaahl: "Working on an ambient album that's currently being mixed — really interesting stuff, in my opinion. Other than that, I spend a lot of time painting. I've become really creative lately."
Rock Hard: What kind of paintings do you paint?
Gaahl: "Hard to describe. They definitely don't have anything in common with GORGOROTH. People might think that all I'm painting are chopped off heads but that's not the case."
Rock Hard: Then what do you paint? Rob Halford in various motorcycle poses?
Gaahl: "Exactly." (laughs) |

Sebastian Bach Interview
Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach was recently interviewed by Record Collector magazine ( web site) — a publication which the singer has described as "definitely my favorite magazine out of the UK and possibly the world. One of the only magazines I can think of that is truly about music, not gossip, trends, fashion, or nostalgia. One of the only magazines I actually buy due to its focus on collecting all sorts of music and its attention to detail."
An excerpt from Bach's interview with Record Collector follows below.
Record Collector: Is there much unreleased in the archives?
Bach: A lot. Back when we were on tour in SKID ROW, from '89 to '91, the soundman was making DATs of every concert, and we were partyng so much, I was the only one who listened to them and collected them. So when they kicked me out of the band in '96, what they forgot was [laughs] … that I have 400 DAT tapes of everything of us and everybody from BON JOVI to SOUNDGARDEN to Axl and MÖTLEY CRÜE. I've got the only copy of those, not to mention the video archive — Dimebag [ Darrell Abbott of PANTERA] goofing off and pro-shot concert footage — tons of one-of-a-kind tapes from '90/'91, with all sorts of people jamming with us. Those guys kicked me out, but they should know that I've transferred all of it to digital for DVD and preserved the quality — I'm not that much of an asshole! [laughs] JOURNEY put out a 1981 show on DVD and those guys hate each other's guts, but how come they put this shit out? So if they [ SKID ROW] ever want to do that, I'm the guy that has all th footage. Make me an offer!
Record Collector: Do you have any tapes from before SKID ROW?
Bach: Yes. I have a tape of my first beer commercial for radio — Schooner — in 1983. Then the guy who was the engineer on RUSH's "Snakes & Arrows", Rich Chycki, was a guitarist in Toronto in the mid-'80s. Before I joined MADAME X from Detroit, I was playing in Rich's band and those tapes exist in high quality sound. When I left for MADAME X, he got James LaBrie of DREAM THEATER in and told him, "Sing it exactly like this." The album came out as WINTER ROSE, but that material exists with me singing [at] age 16. I was also on "Maple Metal" on Attic, at 14. It got reviewed in Kerrang! and I couldn't even comprehend it.
Record Collector: Do you get involved in limited editions of your releases?
Bach: Yeah. The record company told me "Angel Down" was coming out on vinyl picture disc, and I was like, "What?! How cool is that?!" How ironic that vinyl is the one area taking off now. I have tons and it's all preserved in plastic. I've got THE BEATLES "Yesterday and Today" with the baby dolls, and bootlegs I collected as a teenager, like VAN HALEN "Live in Pasadena". I think record companies are silly not putting out this stuff, instead of all this compilation bullshit. They're fucking nuts! [laughs] SKID ROW best-of? We only had three albums, and you can buy them for five bucks. Assholes! [laughs] |

New Rob Zombie Track In Punisher: War Zone Soundtrack
ROB ZOMBIE's brand new song "War Zone" is available for streaming at this location.
"War Zone" is the first track off the soundtrack release to "Punisher: War Zone" from Marvel Comics' latest film adaptation of fictional vigilante and deadly antihero Frank Castle. The lethal motion picture soundtrack features a powerful collection of A-list rockers including the first new music in thre years from ROB ZOMBIE in addition to heart-pounding songs from rock icons such as SEETHER, SLAYER, SLIPKNOT and RISE AGAINST. The fifteen-track album attacks stores on November 25. The film opens nationwide on December 5.
The original track "War Zone", written for and inspired by the film, contains the kind of raw, throttling energy that has made ROB ZOMBIE a platinum-selling artist. The song will also serve as the first single from the soundtrack. Rob Zombie said, "I love writing music for films, rather than just throwing them an unwanted B side or remix. This track was written exclusively for 'Punisher: War Zone'. A punishing track for a punishing movie."
The record also features SLAYER's 2008 Grammy-winning "Final Six" and current chart-topping singles from SLIPKNOT "Psychosocial" and SEETHER "Fallen". The beatdown doesn't stop there, with a broad mix of new and unreleased music that spans every niche of the rock genre, including unreleased songs by premiere punk group RISE AGAINST and emo scenesters SENSES FAIL. Dan Trapp of SENSES FAIL had this to say: "We are super-excited to be a part of the 'Punisher' legacy… when we heard we were going to be involved, we all threw up in our hands out of excitement."
Adding to the epic soundscape of "Punisher: War Zone" is one lucky winner from the Lionsgate/ Clear Channel "Unsigned Artist Contest" that was hosted last month. The contest attracted over 5,000 bands and millions of listeners. The winner will be announced on October 24 at www.punisherwarzonemusic.com. Lionsgate music president Jay Faires adds, "Teaming up with Clear Channel has been a phenomenal experience. The response to the 'Punisher' contest has been incredible, and we are absolutely thrilled about introducing one of these talented unsigned bands to the world."
Providing extra ammunition to round out the album are emerging artists Kerli, highly praised electronica duo JUSTICE, and an inspired, propulsive original score by Michael Wandmacher. This all adds up to make the "Punisher: War Zone" soundtrack one of the most anticipated of the season.
"Punisher: War Zone" track listing is as follows:
01. "War Zone" - ROB ZOMBIE
02. "Final Six" - SLAYER
03. "Psychosocial" - SLIPKNOT
04. "Historia Calamitatum" - RISE AGAINST

Extreme Film Video For New Song Ghost
Reunited Boston hard rockers EXTREME filmed a video for the track "Ghost" on October 23 inside an old church in Massachusetts. Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt came up with the concept and directed the video.
Fan-filmed video footage of EXTREME performing "Ghost" in New York City in August 2008 can be viewed below.
"Saudades de Rock", the new album from EXTREME, sold 6,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 78 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD entered the UK chart at position No. 80.
The band's first studio album in thirteen years, "Saudades de Rock" (pronounced "sow-dodge") was released in the U.S. on August 12 on Open E Records and distributed by Fontana. The European version of the CD, which came out on August 1, includes a bonus track, the "Americocaine" demo from 1985, the very first studio recording of EXTREME.
The iconic rock foursome — vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo — recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. "Saudades de Rock" boasts 13 tracks, including the infectious roar of "Star", the groove-laden, swagger of "King Of The Ladies", a raw funk rock anthem called "Learn To Love", and the expressive ballad "Ghost".
"'Saudades' was always a beautiful word to me," Bettencourt explains about the Portuguese album moniker. "It expresses a longing; an underlying sadness for something or someone that's been missing in your life, and never quite sure if it will ever return. In this case, for us, it's rock and roll. Saudades de Rock."
Gary Cherone adds, "I like how it expresses that longing we've been feeling to play for our fans and be together again."
Open E Records is a new label that is distributed by Fontana. A portion of Open E Records' profits will be donated to Music Drives Us, a foundation created as a way to support music in New England. The foundation also gives scholarship money for individuals who desire to continue their musical education.

New Twisted Sister Live DVD
TWISTED SISTER will release a new DVD, "Live At The Astoria", on November 17. The artwork can be viewed below.
Commented guitarist Jay Jay French: "Recorded in London, in August 2004, the critics hailed TWISTED SISTER's performance as one of their greatest ever. If you're an SMF, and have wondered what TWISTED SISTER thought about any of their live shows throughout their 35-year history, you should know this: while certain bandmembers remember certain shows, and relate tales of particular performances as being their favorite, rarely does the band universally agree that any particular show is about as good as it gets. I can say this without hesitation or ambiguity: each bandmember considered that night to be amongst the most special of our careers. This concert was filmed and kept in a vault for the past four years. When the band had the opportunity to look at the footage, it brought back the heat, passion, intensity and audience participation that was at a level far above all expectations. The DVD will be released worldwide through Demolition Records, our UK-based label, and we look forward to sharing this magical performance with all of you."
TWISTED SISTER's setlist for the August 1, 2004 show at the Astoria in London, England was as follows:
01. What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)
02. The Kids Are Back
03. Under The Blade
04. Destroyer
05. Like A Knife In The Back
06. Burn In Hell
07. Ride To Live
08. Shoot 'Em Down
09. You Can't Stop Rock N' Roll
10. The Fire Still Burns
11. We're Not Gonna Take It
12. The Price
13. I Am, I'm Me
14. I Wanna Rock
15. Come Out & Play
16. S.F.M

Metal Mike Interview
MetalForever.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist "Metal" Mike Chlasciak (HALFORD, PAINMUSEUM, SEBASTIAN BACH). An excerpt from the chat follows below.
MetalForever.com: So Mike, on the Sebastian Bach "Angel Down" album, the band covered an old AEROSMITH classic "Back In The Saddle". Was this a bit of a departure for you?
Chlasciak: Well, it's funny that you mention this. When Roy Z (our producer), came in with an idea of covering "Back In The Saddle" and I heard the original version of the song, I was like, "Is Z out of his mind?" You gotta understand that, if I remember correctly, that song had a 12-string bass and you have all these sounds, whistles, grinds and pops in it and I'm thinking to myself… "Let's see how this one goes," you know. But I remember sitting down with Roy one time in the studio and we looked into the track, I got my routines down and I go — I think I got my head around this. To be honest, I love the way that song came out. And, I think Roy is a fantastic producer for always thinking outside the box. I remember recording the rhythms and finally doubling some choruses for "Back In The Saddle" and thinking that our version has got a slab of really heavy groove in it — its heavy, but at the same time still raw and pissed off kind of like MÖTLEY CRÜE's "Dr. Feelgood"… and then I go, wait a minute — the puzzle is solved! This early AEROSMITH sound is part of the blueprint for that whole U.S. Los Angeles metal. At that time, I went gimme my guitar because I know exactly what to do with it! And, after the rhythms were done, I added some textures by simulating a slide guitar with my Floyd Rose whammy bar and I just played how I play. Later I heard what Axl added to it and what Baz sang on it and I went, "It's done!" It sounds fucking great. I mean, although I am a full on metal lover, I do like different things in music as well, whether it's Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tina Turner or whatever. I think all these things come into play when you record or write as an artist, and it helps you understand music on a broader range. As a kid in high school, I would walk to school listening to MEGADETH's "Peace Sells…But Who's Buying?!" or METALLICA's "Ride The Lightning" and walk back listening to EZO, W.A.S.P., MÖTLEY CRÜE or VINNIE VINCENT INVASION. My peers through so differently about things. You know it was this; if you like METALLICA, you can't like DAVID LEE ROTH or MR. BIG, are you a PRIEST fan or MAIDEN fan. Like you know, why? You can't like both? Why the segregation. And, I was just sick of this type of thinking, you know. I think at the end of the day it gave me a better understanding of music, to be open-minded and listen to and like what I like.
MetalForever.com: You had the priviledge of appearing on albums with some of the greatest vocalists in metal that include Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose. Are there any others you would like to work with? Any memorable moments?
Chlasciak: Man, they are all memorable moments. I have vivid memories of recording guitar solos for the HALFORD "Resurrection" album. You have to understand, making the "Resurrection" album was the most important thing in my life at that time and it will always remain as a special experience for me. But anyways, while making the album Bruce would stop by the studio every so often just to say hey. And, I remember getting ready to do my guitar solos one day and into the control room walk in Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson and they stand behind me and I go, "Are you kidding me?! I'm supposed to play my solos now?!" Haha. It was an honor to hear Bruce sing on the track "The One You Love To Hate" from "Resurrection", it really was. I remember HALFORD playing "The One You Love To Hate" live in London and joining The Metal God on stage were Bruce and Geoff Tate. I'd say that's memorable. Standing on stage next to Rob Halford is an absolute honor. Without any trace of doubt, Rob is The Metal God. Recording Sebastian's "Angel Down" album had some great times, too. It almost had that energy of an artist making their first recording — excitement! Baz was rebuilding things and he was excited about the album. The band played in the same big room at Sound City Studios in California and I would hear Baz go for it in the vocal isolation booth. It was great to hear his determination and performances. The band would play live and cut it "directly to tape" like the old days, except we replaced the 2" machine with hard drives. Then to hear what Axl added to the songs when he did his guest spots, was just … I don't know how to describe it — it was special to hear him on it. I felt wonderful as a musician to have someone like him sing over something I had been a part of. And, you know, I hear Axl's voice and I hear the strength, his delivery and his attitude and it's obvious that Axl Rose has a metal heart. Needless to say, I'd love to opportunity to do something similar again, however small it might be.

Kirk Hammet Interview
Saby Reyes-Kulkarni of The Pitch recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
The Pitch: Looking back to the Black Album, why did you suddenly go for shorter songs? You had three classic albums in a row with winding, involved, progressive songs, and your fanbase up until that time came to you for that.
Kirk Hammett: We were just burned out on it. We wanted to do something that was more groove-oriented and had a little more soul. With the stuff we did in the '80s, a lot of times it was about showing off our chops.
The Pitch: So why the return to form with "Death Magnetic"?
Kirk Hammett: We got tired again. [Laughs.] When we started writing for "Death Magnetic", we found out that the more progressive stuff sounded good again. We hadn't done it for a while, and all of a sudden it just kinda sounded fresh. A lot of it also has to do with the fact that [producer] Rick Rubin said that he wanted to make the ultimate METALLICA album. In his mind, the ultimate METALLICA album would be more along the lines of what we did back in the '80s.
The Pitch: In the 2007 documentary "Get Thrashed", you said, " METALLICA invented thrash metal." I wanted to ask you about EXODUS, who you were playing with first. EXODUS' Gary Holt says that everybody who was there knows what EXODUS' role was.
Kirk Hammett: You know what? [Laughs.] I guess I was just at the center of two storms. If I was still in EXODUS, I would have said that EXODUS invented thrash metal. I said that only because I was in METALLICA at a certain moment in time. There were steps that were being taken, and there's a whole group of musicians who were feeling it. It was a zeitgeist. I would say METALLICA and EXODUS probably simultaneously, ANTHRAX and SLAYER, too — we were all just taking cues from what we heard and what the state of heavy music was at that point. It was something that we all just kinda felt.
The Pitch: After the Napster backlash, how do you look back on the band's attempt to fight downloading?
Kirk Hammett: I'm still against file sharing. I still think people should respect the concept of intellectual property. I don't have a problem with downloading that intellectual property once the people that deserve to be paid do get paid. Technology is a double-edged sword. It's convenient and quick, but we pay a pretty high price for that convenience, that impatience. I would much rather be able to go out and buy a better-sounding CD than a shitty MP3. The whole e-mail and texting thing — I'm not sure if it's really bringing us together as much as it's isolating us. I kind of miss how people used to just call each other up.

Halford DVD Footage
A four-minute video of Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST) and Bruce Dickinson (IRON MAIDEN) in the studio laying down vocal tracks for the song "The One You Love To Hate" from HALFORD's 2000 album "Resurrection" can be found at MetalGodShop.com. The footage comes off "Resurrection World Tour - Live At Rock In Rio III", a three-hour DVD which debuted earlier this month in a custom-designed digipack, featuring a twenty-eight page booklet and HALFORD's debut CD release, "Resurrection – Remastered" with 16 songs, including two new HALFORD tracks. The DVD also includes HALFORD's complete Rock In Rio III performance in 5.1 Surround Sound audio. Thirteen cameras are fixed on the HALFORD as The Metal God delivers one of his best live performances in front of two-hundred-thousand-plus Brazilians.

A Fuckload Of New Promotional Clips For Chinese Democracy
Sixteen short promotional clips for the long-awaited new GUNS N' ROSES album, "Chinese Democracy", can be viewed below.
A slightly revised track listing for "Chinese Democracy" was posted late last week at BestBuy.com, which will exclusively carry the album in the U.S. starting on November 23. A pre-order page for the long-delayed release was posted at the site on Wednesday (October 15), although the pre-order option was later taken off. The page lists 14 song titles for the record, 11 of which have either been played live or leaked online over the past few years. The Pulse of Radio reports that one of those, "Street of Dreams", was previously known as "The Blues", while three titles, "Scraped", "Sorry" and "Prostitute", have not been heard anywhere.
According to Billboard.com, sources who have heard the album say that it opens with a "blood-curdling Axl Rose scream."
Two different covers will apparently be available, along with CD and vinyl versions. What appears to be one of the covers has been posted at the Best Buy site, showing what seems to be a bicycle with a basket perched on it.
There has still not been an official announcement regarding the November 23 arrival date for the record.
"Chinese Democracy" has been in the works since the mid-'90s, with speculation and mystery surrounding the album's 13-year journey, ever-changing roster of players and spiraling recording costs.
Revised "Chinese Democracy" track listing:
01. Chinese Democracy
02. Shackler's Revenge
03. Better
04. Street Of Dreams
05. If The World
06. There Was A Time

Brian Johnson Interview
AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson recently spoke to Edna Gundersen of USA Today about the band's forthcoming tour in support of the "Black Ice" album.
"At 61, this could be my last shot," Johnson said, but he added that the run-throughs "have been smooth as a gravy sandwich."
"I try to look after my health," he said. "I don't do a 6-mile jog. I might do a half-hour on a bike in the morning."
Johnson expressed amazement at the band's enduring appeal and credited much of its longevity to chemistry and an obsessive focus on music.
"People talk a lot about Angus and Malcolm, but that's not fair," he said. "There's more than two brothers. There are five. Malcolm, our spiritual leader, always told us to be a rock band first and a celebrity way, way after that. Stay below the radar, don't get involved in politics, stop covering yourself in glory on the stages of the world."

Brian Johnson Interview
Darryl Sterdan of 24 Hours recently conducted an interview with AC/DC singer Brian Johnson. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
24 Hours: Why did the new album [ "Black Ice"] take eight years?
Johnson: Well, after the last one, we did a tour, and then we did a few gigs in Germany with THE [ ROLLING] STONES, and we did the SARS benefit in Toronto and so on, so we were playing a lot. Plus, we changed record companies, which took some time and some pushing and all kinds of nasty stuff. So that took our focus away. But really, I think the reason was that Mal [ Malcolm Young] and Angus [ Young] really wanted something special, something fresh, and they weren't going to be rushed. And I think they came up with it, me son. I think they did a cracking job. I was so happy when I heard these riffs. This was the most fun album I've done in about 15 years. It was just a hoot to do.
24 Hours: Aren't you sick of carrying Angus around on your shoulders? How far have you run over the years with his sweaty crotch on the back of your neck?
Johnson: Me son, it's got to be 50 miles. But at least he's not getting any heavier.
24 Hours: Everybody says Malcolm is really the boss. Is that true? Is the band a democracy or a dictatorship?
Johnson: It's a democracy, up to a certain point. And Malcolm wouldn't thank me for saying he's the man. But he is. Well, him and Angus. It's their band. They started it. It's their puppy. And they've made decisions through the years that have kept the band the way it is, kept it clean and pure. And there's not many bands that have really not sold out in any way, shape or form.
24 Hours: For 30 years, Malcolm has been standing stage right of the drums, with Cliff [ Williams] on the left. If they switched sides, would it all fall apart?
Johnson: Definitely. If Cliff and Mal changed sides, it would be the end of AC/DC. They wouldn't know what to do. The band would split. End of story.
24 Hours: What songs are you going to play on tour? There must be a dozen you have to do. But are there others you particularly want to do?
Johnson: Well, we have to do "Thunderstruck", "Back in Black", "You Shook Me All Night Long", "TNT", "Whole Lotta Rosie", "Let There be Rock". And we're gonna do five songs off the new album. As for older stuff, I'd like to do "What's Next to the Moon". I like "Gone Shootin'" too. That would be a good one.

Tony Iommi Interview
BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN AND HELL guitarist Tony Iommi recently spoke to Guitar World magazine about his 40 years in music, and one of the subjects broached by writer Chris Gill was the fact that a handful of BLACK SABBATH songs recorded in the band's early days when they were still known as EARTH — including "The Rebel", "When I Came Down" and "Song For Jim" — have yet to be released to this day.
According to Iommi, "We didn’t write those songs. They were written by a chap named Norman Haines. At the time we were managed by Jim Simpson, who was a local Birmingham guy. He insisted that we record these songs that his friend Norman had written. We just wanted to play, so we recorded them. We wanted to write our own songs and make our own record, but this was just an initial effort. We had never been in a recording studio in our lives before that. It was a very basic studio. Even back then we never really wanted those recordings to see the light of day. Those songs sound nothing remotely like BLACK SABBATH."
A brief audio snippet of "When I Came Down" can be heard below.
A collection of unpublished outtakes from Guitar World's interview with Tony Iommi can be read here.

More White Zombie Boxset Details
WHITE ZOMBIE. The musical horrorshow that mixed dark pop culture with metallic hard rock has been resurrected on the 4-CD/1-DVD box set "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" (Geffen/UMe), released November 25, 2008. The CDs bring together for the first time all 64 original studio recordings released by the band led by Rob Zombie during its 1985-1996 career. The DVD offers nine music videos, 10 live performances, and some hidden gems.
Disc One of "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" includes all of the tracks released on the New York City band's own Silent Explosion label — the four songs on the 1985 "Gods On Voodoo Moon" EP, of which only 300 copies were pressed; the two songs on the 1986 "Pig Heaven" EP, which had only 1,000 made; and the seven on 1987's "Psycho-Head Blowout" EP, which NIRVANA's Kurt Cobain called one of his favorite albums.
Disc Two encompasses WHITE ZOMBIE's first two full-length albums, 1987's "Soul-Crusher", which began on Silent Explosion but was re-released by Caroline Records the following year, and 1989's "Make Them Die Slowly". Disc Three offers the three-selection "God Of Thunder" EP and the band's 1992 major label debut, "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1", which broke the band into the Top 40, earned double platinum and spawned the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy-nominated "Thunder Kiss '65" and "Black Sunshine" (with Iggy Pop). Also heard is "I Am Hell" from the soundtrack to the 1993 animated flick "The Beavis & Butt-head Experience".
Disc Four opens with "Children Of The Grave" from a 1994 BLACK SABBATH tribute album and "Feed The Gods" from that year's "Airheads" soundtrack album. The centerpiece, however, is 1995's "Astro-Creep: 2000, Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head", which ranked in the Top 10 for two months, was certified triple platinum and spun off the Modern Rock Top 10, Grammy-nominated "More Human Than Human". The 64 "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" recordings conclude with 1996 soundtrack contributions to "Escape From L.A.", "Beavis And Butt-head Do America" and "The Crow: City Of Angels", with its Grammy-nominated cover of the disco hit "I'm Your Boogieman".
Among the DVD's videos are those for "More Human Than Human", winner of the MTV Video Music Award for Best Hard Rock Video, as well as "Thunder Kiss '65", "Black Sunshine", "Super-Charger Heaven", "I'm Your Boogieman" and "The One". Live performances include "Soul-Crusher", "Spiderbaby (Yeah Yeah Yeah)", "I Am Hell" and "Creature Of The Wheel".
WHITE ZOMBIE officially disbanded in 1998 after the release of the "Hellbilly Deluxe", the triple platinum solo debut for Rob Zombie, who has since enjoyed continued success both on record and as a film director with his vision of the dark side.

Stay Hungry! Again!
TWISTED SISTER is planning a 25th-anniversary re-release of its classic 1984 album "Stay Hungry" featuring loads of bonus material, including one brand new track that the band is set to record later this month. "There's gonna be two discs — it's gonna be the original album remastered, and it's gonna have all the outtakes, including about 15 songs that we never finished; all two verses and a chorus," guitarist Jay Jay French revealed during an October 10, 2008 appearance on Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM. "In much the same way that everybody's throwing the kitchen sink in these historical records — we're gonna have that — plus we're gonna have a brand new song that we're recording in two weeks."
Back in 2004, TWISTED SISTER released "Still Hungry" — a re-recorded and expanded version of "Stay Hungry". "Still Hungry" — which was produced by Mark Mendoza, a longtime producer/engineer in addition to his bass guitar duties with TWISTED SISTER — gave the New York-based band a chance to make "Stay Hungry" the way it was first envisioned. "Stay Hungry" sold more than 6 million copies worldwide, but it didn't sound the way TWISTED SISTER wanted it to sound.
"'Still Hungry' is 'Stay Hungry - The Way It Ought to Be'," Jay Jay French stated at the time. "It has an ultra-heavy sound, which is the way we wanted 'Stay Hungry' in the first place. But at that time rock records had a thin, very midrange kind of sound and so 'Stay Hungry' was recorded very lightly. We battled Atlantic Records and producer Tom Werman about it, but we lost.
"These re-recordings are faithful to the original arrangements but they sound much heavier," he continued. "There are an additional seven tracks included — obscure songs from our club days but never officially recorded then. On two of these songs, 'Never Say Never' and 'Blastin' Fast & Loud', we used the original drum tracks that A.J. [Pero] recorded. These songs were meant to be included on 'Stay Hungry' but were never finished. 'Heroes Are Hard to Find' was on the soundtrack of Dee's [Snider's] movie 'Strangeland'."
Six of the seven bonus tracks on "Still Hungry" previously appeared, mostly in raw form, on archival TWISTED SISTER albums. Demos of "Come Back" and "Rock N Roll Saviors" were included on the 1999 Spitfire Records collection "Club Daze Volume I: The Studio Sessions". The completed 2001 studio recordings of "Never Say Never" and "Blastin' Fast & Loud" (with Pero's original 1984 drum tracks) kicked off 2001's Spitfire release "Club Daze Volume II: Live in the Bars", which also featured vintage live versions of "You Know I Cry", "Plastic Money" and "Come Back" (one of just a few songs to appear on both "Club Daze" volumes).
Italian news blog Musica Metal uploaded video footage (see below) of TWISTED SISTER performing the song "The Price" (which originally appeared on the "Stay Hungry" album) at the first edition of the Rock Of Ages festival, which was held on September 13, 2008 in Milan, Italy.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Trailer
A trailer for the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica game, which is apparently included on Guitar Hero: World Tour, can be viewed below.
When Guitar Hero: World Tour arrives at the end of this month, METALLICA fans will be able to play all 10 songs from the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", on the game as downloadable content. Among those playing along will be METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich, who bought the game for his kids and told The Pulse of Radio why he's now a fan himself. "It works on a couple of fronts," he said. "It works on the front of sharing the experiences with your kids. It works on exposing your kids to music. And it also helps Dad a little bit, because all of a sudden Dad's in the video game, and that helps balance the perception of Dad when Dad spends a lot of time talking about doing homework and eating vegetables and all this other stuff, you know what I mean?"
Guitar Hero: World Tour is due out on October 26. It contains more than 80 songs from METALLICA, VAN HALEN, MICHAEL JACKSON, OZZY OSBOURNE, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, COLDPLAY, STING, and dozens more artists.
METALLICA also created a special "extended" version of a "Death Magnetic" track called "Suicide and Redemption" for playing on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. All 10 songs from "Death Magnetic" are available as downloadable content for Guitar Hero III.
While a rumored all-METALLICA edition of Guitar Hero has yet to be confirmed by either the band or the game's publisher, Lars Ulrich himself hinted that the game will be out sometime next year.
METALLICA will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona. Ulrich told Billboard that the band intends to play at least five new songs a night in its set, rotating them so that all the tracks from "Death Magnetic" will be performed live.

Angus Young Interview
Guitarist Angus Young of Australian hard rock legends AC/DC has told Kathy McCabe of News.com.au he remains in awe of his brother Malcolm's (the other half of AC/DC guitar duo) natural talent.
"My ambition was just to be able to play," he said
"(Growing up) Malcolm was always way ahead of me with it, he did it so naturally but for me, it took some learning to get it and get better. I'm still in amazement. Malcolm's unique in that he has that sound, that style.
"Even when we were recording [ 'Black Ice'], [producer] Brendan O'Brien was looking at Malcolm — not anyone else — and he was in amazement, just watching him, just watching that hand.
"Once when we were in London and Keith Richards said to come on down to one of their shows — we'd played some gigs for them — and he was talking about playing and he asked me if I ever f...ed up.
"And I told him 'I'm not a f...in' robot, everyone can screw up. But I've got one saving grace, Keith. I've got Malcolm.'
"He knows what Malcolm's got goin' and he knows it's no easy thing to do because it's the same as what he does.
"It ain't no easy thing to do, it's rare."

Angus Young Interview
Telegraph.co.uk recently spoke to AC/DC guitarist Angus Young about the band's forthcoming album, "Black Ice", due out on October 20.
"All you need to know about AC/DC is this — we stopped growing musically when we were 17," Young said. "When you’re 17, you write songs that you hope will appeal to other 17-year-olds. And we still write songs for 17-year-olds."
Young has a "never-complain, never-explain" attitude to both the band's image and their eye-watering record sales.
"There's a lot of nonsense spoken about music today," he said. "For us it really is quite simple. We began by playing Chuck Berry covers. Every so often we would sneak in one of our own songs. We used to look at each other at the end of our own songs and say, 'I don't think they noticed.' So then we put a few more originals in. We went from the bars to slightly bigger venues and then over the years to arenas and all of that. One day, you look around and you find that you’ve sold 200 million albums."

Slash Solo Project Well Under Way
Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash recently spoke to the Artisan News Service about his upcoming solo album which is tentatively expected sometime next year.
"I'm just at the very tail end of doing demos for it right now," he said. "So, I'll probably have about four more songs left to record in demo form and then in January go into the studio and actually start recording. Schedule permitting, because I've got VELVET REVOLVER stuff if we find a singer. So, it's sort of a juggling act at the moment."
Although Slash didn't want to jinx anything by revealing any vocalists as of yet, it is rumored that his friends Lenny Kravitz, Sebastian Bach and Alice Cooper have initially committed to the project.

Alice Cooper Interview
Johnson Cummins of the Montreal Mirror recently conducted an interview with legendary rocker Alice Cooper. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Montreal Mirror: What were those early days in Detroit in the late '60s like, playing with the MC5, STOOGES, MITCH RYDER and so on?
Alice: Detroit at that time was by far the healthiest music scene going. When we first went to Detroit, we had never heard of the MC5 or the STOOGES. We went on after the STOOGES at this festival and when I saw Iggy, I just realized that I had found some competition. Detroit audiences would only respond to bands that had attitude, offered no excuses and played it loud. Every week, we would play bills like STOOGES, MC5, ALICE COOPER and THE WHO at the Grande, and even at that time we realized that these were some of the greatest rock 'n' roll shows that would ever happen. Everybody was really competitive too. If Keith Moon had 31 drums, Neal [ Smith, ex-drummer] would make sure he had 32.
Montreal Mirror: It does seem rare that the STOOGES and your current show can still deliver after 40 years.
Alice: When people call me and Iggy dinosaurs, I just tell them we're carnivores because we will take on any band full of 20-year-olds right now and blow them off the stage. I'm not even basing that on content or showmanship, but just on energy alone.
Montreal Mirror: Do you ever get pissed that so many people have ripped off your image and theatrics, and continue to do so?
Alice: When Marilyn [ Manson] came along, I thought, if he was playing hard rock, it was way too close, but he didn't really. I mean, I respect what he does, but I still think it's a little funny — gee, a guy with a girl's name wearing make-up, I wish I would've thought of that. When I first met him, it was like Bela Lugosi meeting Boris Karloff.

New Led Zeppelin Boxset
LED ZEPPELIN first took flight 40 years ago this summer. And while the song may remain the same, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham forever changed rock 'n' roll. To celebrate the band's anniversary and its immeasurable influence on popular music and culture, Atlantic Records/Rhino Entertainment will release on November 4 a limited-edition CD box set. This Japanese import contains all 10 of the quartet's albums in mini-LP replicas with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves.
The mini-LP replicas boxed set includes:
* Led Zeppelin (1969)
* Led Zeppelin II (1969)
* Led Zeppelin III (1970)
* Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
* Houses of the Holy (1973)
* Physical Graffiti (1975)
* Presence (1976)
* The Song Remains the Same (1976)
* In Through the Out Door (1979)

The sleeves included in the boxed set feature the original LP album artwork released in the U.K., including the original printing of the group's debut, which used turquoise ink on the cover for the band's name and the Atlantic Records logo. "Led Zeppelin III" features the gatefold sleeve with the rotatable laminated card disc, while "Physical Graffiti", which was nominated for a Grammy Award for best album package, features the interchanging window illustrations from the original LP jacket that included four covers made up of two inners, a middle insert cover and an outer cover.
Additionally, the set includes all six covers released for "In Through the Out Door", LED ZEPPELIN's final studio album. Nominated for a Grammy Award for best album package, the "In Through the Out Door" covers feature different photos of the same bar scene taken from different perspectives.

Tony Iommi Interview
Chris Gill of Guitar World magazine conducted an interview with BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi for the publication's holiday issue cover story. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Guitar World: How old were you when you started playing?
Iommi: I was probably about 12. I played accordion before that. Everyone else in my family played accordion, so I got one as well. In those days you used to just sit in your room and you didn't know what to do, so I learned to play accordion. From there I moved on to different instruments, and I eventually discovered the guitar.
Guitar World: Was it a challenge to find a decent left-handed guitar?
Iommi: It was a big challenge trying to find any decent guitar, let alone a left-handed one. In England, the only ones you could find then were very cheap. If you wanted a left-handed guitar, you had to order one from a catalog and then wait three months for it to show up. A few years after I started playing, I was lucky enough to come across a left-handed Fender Stratocaster that somebody who worked in a shop had tucked away and told me about.
Guitar World: It's fascinating how the factory accident led to you tuning down your guitar to make it more comfortable to play, but at the same time it also made what you played on the guitar sound heavier.
Iommi: Everything I did was to make it more comfortable for me, first and foremost. It used to hurt a lot to play because my fingertips were very sensitive. If my plastic fingertips ever came off, which did happen one time, my fingers would be sliced right open by the strings and there would be blood everywhere. I really had to work with my guitar setup so I could be able to play. There were some limitations, but I had to try to get over it. That's how I came up with all of these other things, such as a 24-fret neck and lighter strings, so I could do more. But it really helped us get the sound we were looking for.

The complete interview with Tony Iommi can be found in the Holiday 2008 issue of Guitar World, on sale October 14.
ACDC Comment on New Album
AC/DC members Angus Young (guitar) and Brian Johnson (vocals) recently spoke to UK's The Sun about the band's forthcoming album, "Black Ice", due out October 20. "It had to be representative of how we are," Angus says of the new CD. "We had other songs but they weren't right. Every one of the 15 tracks on 'Black Ice', you will say, 'That is AC/DC.'"
For "Black Ice" they teamed up with producer and fan Brendan O'Brien, who said "I'd missed AC/DC and wanted the same band back."
Angus adds: "I was impressed by him because he is a musician first and has great production skills. We told him to be brutal. Critics can shoot us full of arrows but I don't worry about it. When we started, we never had great reviews. I can show you some of them, they were never pretty. We were called colonial hicks, the Chunder From Down Under, and told we should be on the first boat home."
Brian credits working with Brendan as an important factor in the making of the album. He says: " Brendan was fantastic. We hadn't met him before so there's a little awkwardness when you first get in the studio with a new guy because he's butting into your little gang. But, by Christ, after five minutes with this guy we could see how wonderful he was. He would never call you by your first name but by both names. He goes (puts on an American accent), ' Brian Johnson — are you ready to sing?' Well, yeah, sure I am Brendan. He goes, 'OK, let's go down there, see what you got, big boy.' Then looking at me, he said, ' Brian Johnson, you don't like singing in studios do ya?' and I said, 'No, I frickin' hate it'. He said, 'What's wrong?' I said, 'It's the buttons, it's the microphone hanging down, it's the headphones and then it's the 123 and sing.' So, he said, 'Just give me a night to think about it.' The next day, I come in and he said, 'OK, this is the room you're gonna sing in'. I went, 'But this is the office behind the reception desk in the studio.' He said, 'Yeah, well you said you didn't like to be alone.' And so he put a couple of speakers and a little mixing desk in there and gave me this huge microphone, this big old Shure 56, which weighed about seven pounds and he said, 'OK, let's rock.' He played the backing track the boys had done the night before and I started singing...and the receptionist resigned immediately. The receptionist, the poor little girl, she got the shock of her life and she had a German Shepherd dog which started howling. I don't know if he was joining in or he was protesting about the whole thing."

New Slayer Song And DVD Planned
California thrash kings SLAYER will perform their classic 1986 album "Reign In Blood" in its entirety on October 30 at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, England during the band's "The Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" European tour. The following night's performance at the same venue will feature a different set and will be filmed for an upcoming DVD.
In addition to SLAYER, "The Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" features TRIVIUM, MASTODON and AMON AMARTH. The UK portion of the tour is co-headlined by SLAYER and TRIVIUM, with SLAYER closing all shows. The mainland Europe portion is headlined by SLAYER, with TRIVIUM as "special guest."
Fans who attend any of the upcoming European "Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" dates, will receive a new SLAYER song via an exclusive download card that will also include special material from the entire tour's lineup — SLAYER, MASTODON, TRIVIUM and AMON AMARTH. The download card, along with a limited edition "Unholy Alliance Tour" clothing patch, will be given away free only to ticket holders when they arrive at their local venue the night of the show.
The new SLAYER song is being recorded as you read this, as SLAYER has just entered a Los Angeles-area studio to begin recording the new album. More info on the free song and new album will be announced shortly. In addition, TRIVIUM's "Kirisute Gomen" from their upcoming album "Shogun" (released September 30), and "Guardians of Asgaard", a new gem from AMON AMARTH's "Twilight of the Thunder God" (released September 30), will also be part of the download package. MASTODON opted to do something a little different for their contribution to the tour download — the band will take fans into the recording studio for a first-look and listen to the making of their upcoming album. Plus, a live-in-concert SLAYER performance filmed at the band's 2007 San Diego Sports Arena show will be included in the "Unholy Alliance Tour" download package.
New Greatest Package From Queen
EMI has set a November 17 release date for "Queen: The Singles Collection Volume 1", a project 35 years in the making and spanning no less than sixteen albums; from the debut LP, "Queen", in 1973, to the last project with Freddie Mercury, "Made In Heaven", in 1995, and beyond. This box, the first of four, kicks off with the first single, "Keep Yourself Alive", and runs through to "Don't Stop Me Now" from 1979. Box 2 will continue the story into the mid 1980s, and so on. Ultimately, the four boxes will offer every one of QUEEN's singles to have made the top 40 (except "Keep Yourself Alive" which is included because it was the first-ever single).
On July 6, 1973, EMI released the first QUEEN single, "Keep Yourself Alive". In the UK it is the first and only track to be taken from the band's debut album, "Queen". The record attracts some interest in England but gets little airplay, and so fails to appear in the singles chart. EMI's promotion team are given feedback from the radio programmers that the song doesn't fit into their playlists, because, apparently, "It takes too long to happen" — presumably referring to its 30-second guitar intro (now widely regarded as one of its most intriguing features!). In order to ensure the same excuse is not offered next time around, in crafting the band's second single, "Seven Seas Of Rhye" (from "Queen II"), the band decide to make everything happen in the opening seconds… "Everything, including the kitchen sink," as guitarist Brian May would later quip. Evidently, it works; this time the single picks up immediate airplay and charts in the first week of release: in February 1974 QUEEN achieve their first UK and worldwide hit.
From this moment on, QUEEN hit singles become a virtual certainty, with the release of each successive album, each one musically a departure from the last, and, significantly, featuring compositions from all four band members. QUEEN is to date the only group whose members have all written No. 1 hits around the world.
Packaged in a flip top box the 13 CD singles feature a selection of faithfully reproduced cover artwork from around the world.

According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy" (Geffen/Interscope) finally has a release date. The CD will hit all Best Buy stores, where it is an exclusive, on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, November 23, giving it a full seven days on sale before entering the chart on December 2. Best Buy's sales week runs from Sunday through Saturday night.
GUNS manager Andy Gould reportedly told 900 Best Buy employees at "vendor convention" held by Best Buy last month in Dallas that a new GN'R song called "If The World" will play under the closing credits of "Body of Lies", the new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe due out on October 10. That news was confirmed online at film web sites whose representatives had attended a press screening of the flick. "If The World" will not appear on the film's soundtrack album.
"If The World" features the guitar work of Robin Finck and Buckethead, who have both since departed GUNS N' ROSES.
Another new GN'R song, called "Shackler's Revenge", appears on the Rock Band 2 video game.
"Chinese Democracy" has been more than 13 years in the making, with every original member of GUNS N' ROSES except for frontman Axl Rose long since gone from the lineup.

New Museum For MEtal!
For too long, the residents of Birmingham, UK have failed to celebrate what is rightfully theirs — to claim the city as the home of heavy metal. Now, 40 years after the term "heavy metal" was coined, it's time to start celebrating!
The city of Birmingham has spawned arguably some of the most influential bands of all time — bands who defined genres and influenced generations. To celebrate this, art and music promoters Capsule are launching a new project named "Home of Metal" with the aim of creating the first digital archive of music, memorabilia and more, to tell the story of this city's unique musical heritage.
Along with such legends as BLACK SABBATH, JUDAS PRIEST and LED ZEPPELIN, Earache Records' very own early signings NAPALM DEATH and GODFLESH will be featured in this special tribute to metal and the place where it all started.
"Home of Metal" will launch at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Saturday, October 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., where rare artefacts from the early days of NAPALM DEATH's and GODFLESH's careers will be exhibited. Fans are invited to come along with memorabilia and share their personal experiences of the bands, all of which will go towards the new digital archive. Further open days will take place on Thursday, November 6 at New Art Gallery in Walsall and Saturday, February 7 at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Each open day will be hosted by Kerrang! Radio DJ Johnny Doom, accompanied by special guests from the music industry, and entrance for the events is free!

Slash Interview
Erin Broadley of L.A. Weekly conducted an interview with former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash on Tuesday, October 7 inside a parked Gibson tour bus behind Sam Ash Music in Hollywood, California. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
L.A. Weekly: You've said about band dynamics that you don't think there needs to be volatile chemistry in a band to create good music. For the solo album, without having a domineering or problematic frontman to deal with, is that opening up doors for you?
Slash: Sitting around thinking about stuff every so often, I realize that where I get the most inspiration is when the guys that you're working with... it's like being with a woman... you have this energy. When you have a lot of negative stuff going on it just completely depletes the creative process. It's nice to be able to do a solo record and do whatever the fuck I want.
L.A. Weekly: I interviewed Dave Mustaine [MEGADETH] awhile back at Guitar Center Sessions and he sang your praises but then said, "Buckethead [former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist] is probably twice as good a guitar player as me and Slash combined, and can stand having fried chicken rubbed up against his face all night for a couple of hours."
Slash: Well, that is actually true. Anybody who knows me knows that technically I couldn't play my way out of a paper bag. [Laughs] Or a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket, for that matter. I manage to do what it is I do based on a certain kind of feel and sound. I'm getting better at it but I've never been what you'd call a technical guitar player so he's totally right [laughs].

Lars Ulrich Interview
Tom Trakas of Chicago's now-defunct Midwest Metal magazine conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich on September 5, 2008. A few excerpts from the chat, which can be found on Trakas' None But My Own blog, follow below.
None But My Own: I'm sure at certain points in METALLICA's life you've been completely overwhelmed with press, where are you in 2008 in regards to promoting "Death Magnetic"?
Lars: Generally, because we've been touring all summer, [when we're out] we try to keep it to about two to three hours per day because any more than that then it starts to affect the show. But back in the '90s we used to go on these crazy fucking promo trips where you'd spend like two weeks in Europe or the Far East or wherever. While you're there, you'd do like eight to ten hours a day for, like I said two or three weeks straight. That would drive you fucking crazy because you'd be sitting there and literally [in the middle of an interview] you couldn't remember if the point you were about to make, whether you already said it to that guy or to the guy a half an hour ago (laughing)! It's been crazy though, we've got some shows coming up next week so we've been rehearsing and while we're doing that we're trying to keep it to a few hours a day. I did do a full day in Copenhagen which was like, eight to ten hours or so but we haven't done any of the full-on things, I suppose we're just trying to preserve our sanity, but it sure feels like at any time it can go!
None But My Own: Back after the success of 1991's self-titled "Black" album there was a cover story in Issue #38 of Classic Rock magazine, it had a photo of you and the caption was something like " Lars Ulrich, this man simply did not want to settle for being the 'next' IRON MAIDEN"…
Lars: (Laughing)
None But My Own: But my thing is, you had the balls to actually dream that dream, and more or less set this goal for your band and sonofabitch if it didn't happen.
Lars: I gotta tell ya, man, that's a little far-fetched, I mean if someone would've told me in 1981 or '82 that maybe one day we could be equals or even in their shadows (pause) listen, IRON MAIDEN is a different generation. I'll always look up to IRON MAIDEN because I grew up looking up to IRON MAIDEN. The rest of all that is up to the other people to figure the rest out. Like I said, I'll always look up to IRON MAIDEN, I had IRON MAIDEN posters on my wall growing up. Talk about bands holding a place in your heart, IRON MAIDEN holds a very special place in my heart. Yes, we've been fortunate enough to, at least in America, to have bigger numbers or whatever but if you or anyone would've told me in 1981 when James and I started this band that one day we might be able to be mentioned in the same breath as IRON MAIDEN, it would've blown our minds. We were not as goal oriented as the press in England tagged us to be, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Maybe later, by the time you could sense that whatever it was that we were doing was kind of working and turning people on, we're talking about the late '80s. But when we started? We couldn't fathom any of this and we simply did not have such goals. When we started it was drink some beers or some Goldschläger or Schnapps or whatever horrible shit we were drinking and get together to play our favorite heavy metal songs. The first six months the band was together we didn't even write any songs! I mean we had "Hit The Lights" and then the next ten songs we had were all covers, it wasn't until "Jump In The Fire" with ( Dave) Mustaine, that's when we thought, "OK, it's kinda fun writing your own songs." (laughs) Those first few whatever was just about having a good time and sweating it out and banging into some shit. A few years later, there was a turning point and you may have heard me talk about this before, but there's a few turning points for METALLICA that can be looked at upon and this was one of them. I remember the last date of the Ozzy tour and this would be James' birthday, so that's August 3, 1986 in Hampton, Virginia, and our manager, Cliff Burnstein, came down from New York for the last show. So we're all sitting there in the back of the bus and he said, "You've now sold enough records and you've made enough money to go and buy houses." We'd been on the Ozzy tour, at that point for five months. All of us, band and crew on one bus, drinking twelve hours a day, fucking, just living every crazy fantasy about girls and heavy metal and being on the road. We were completely blissfully ignorant to what was going on, you know on that side of it. I remember Cliff [ Burton] sitting there and going, "Fuuucccckkk, I can buy a house," and the rest of us were, I mean the rest of didn't want to buy a house — we wanted to stay on tour (laughing)! We didn't want to go home! So yeah, I remember that day because it was like, "Whoa, you mean you can actually make money doing this? You can buy a house and buy shit?" And this was what? Five years into it? Then we did the VAN HALEN thing in the summer [ Monsters of Rock in 1988] and then all fall we did Europe and then we came back to the States to start in November of 1988. We had AC/DC's production manager, Jake Berry, and we had a real stage show and we were playing the arenas and they booked two nights at Long Beach Arena and I seriously didn't think we could even sell one out, but we sold both out and that was another turning point. It was like, not only can you make enough money to buy a house, but you could make enough money to buy a big fucking house (laughs)!! But the first six years or so was ignorant bliss, four nerdy dudes out there banging away, having a lot of fun. But "Justice" was when we actually had to get it together as we were the headliners and we had a two-hour show to play every night, but you know after that it just kept building and all of a sudden you're making records with Bob Rock. But man, as far as IRON MAIDEN is concerned, I'm a fanboy of IRON MAIDEN, always will be. We did a few shows with them in Spain back in 1988 and it was us, ANTHRAX and IRON MAIDEN and it was like, "Fuck, we get to play with IRON MAIDEN," and we got a chance to hang back at the hotel and party with them. Dude it was super-cool. I'm super-psyched that they're still out there and kicking major fucking ass all over the world. I got to see them at Long Beach Arena four or five months ago and it was awesome! Steve Harris, I swear to god, I met Steve Harris for the first time in 1981 and it was the last show they ever played with Paul Di'Anno in Copenhagen, Denmark at a place the size of your living room. Steve Harris, when I saw them back in February of this year, he's the exact same guy, the exact same guy as the guy I met back in '81 except he's got longer hair now! How many dudes that are 50 years old have hair down to their ass? I mean why can't I grow my hair, what's up with that (laughs)?!
None But My Own: In your book [2004's] "So What!: The Good, The Mad, and The Ugly" in the Cliff tribute section, you write "I wish I could spend some time with Cliff in your current state of mind." please elaborate.
Lars: Sure. I think it would be interesting to sit here with kids and obviously twenty-seven years of doing this and have a slightly healthier outlook on life as well as a less narcissistic outlook. More open-minded, less linear or one track minded and all this stuff, so it'd be interesting to share some of that with him now. It would be very interesting to see what he would have contributed to some of the wackier paths METALLICA has gone on musically. He was so all over the place, very hard to pin point musically. He was very open to different and fucked up shit and I'm pretty sure he would've thought playing with the San Francisco Symphony would be way cool! I'm pretty sure he would've got off on the pummeling aggression of "St. Anger" but I'm not so sure he would necessarily agreed with the way it was kind of put together on a computer, but the naked aggression of that record, I do think he would've dug. He would have probably wanted a few more melodic elements on it, but in some ways he was quite contradictory, he was all about a lot of melody and stuff but at the same time "Damage Inc." was one of his favorite songs. So there was a lot of opposing energies going on and it would be great to just share with him the nuttiness that's going on right now.
None But My Own: Are you still the obsessive METALLICA collector you once were?
Lars: Increasingly less, but I do try to the best of my ability but at one point and we're talking a few years ago, it got so big it became difficult to handle. I have maybe the first one-hundred bootlegs that came out but during the "Black" album when we allowed everyone to start taping the shows it just became too much. I have most of the official stuff, but again it's hard to manage that too. You have to call the office and make sure you get two copies of the Spanish thing with the poster that's a different poster than the Portuguese one, so yeah it's a little much. I will tell you this, I have everything up until the mid-'90s, then you start having kids and stuff and you almost have no choice but to ease up. (laughing) I still have twenty-five, unopened "$5.98 Garage Days…" in the original long boxes, still shrink wrapped, so when the whole thing falls flat on its face, I can start eBay-ing those!

Ohh Ohh I have to add this to Joe's post..
Pete Alander, from the Steel Mill site did the imaging for Yngwie On his website and latest album.. go take a look.......... Pete YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bazooka Joe from Sunday, October 05, 2008 4:06:15 PM) | | Bazooka Joe wrote: | | Yngwie Interview
Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited recently conducted an interview with legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Classic Rock Revisited: The first thing we need to talk about is "Perpetual Flame". This album sounds more live than you have for a long time.
Yngwie: All the stars aligned for this album. We made this record completely different than any record I have ever made. I have my own studio, so I have the luxury of doing it whenever I want. In the old days, you would spend five grand a day in the studio and it was serious pressure. Normally, I just write the songs while I am noodling on my guitar when I am upstairs watching television. I would then get Patrick [Johansson] to do the live drums and I would write the bass and the guitar and whatever. On this particular instance, the songs were taking shape, so I went in the studio with Patrick and we did thirty songs, and I went on the road and forgot about it. I came back from tour, listened to it and picked out the songs that were really good. I put on some guitar and bass and then I went on tour again. I was in Istanbul and I was hanging out with some guys who were playing these strings and I had them add a string section. I have my laptop with me on tour with the backing tracks and ProTools on it. Normally, I start and finish an album right away, but this one took a long time, and that is a big difference. When I came back from Russia, I was listening to the songs "Death Dealer" and "Four Horseman" and I knew that the singer I had was not going to cut it for what I was hearing in my head. So I brought in Ripper [Tim "Ripper" Owens]. He was in another band and he was leaving that band. He came down to Miami and he sang a couple of songs to just feel it out, and it was a no-brainer because it sounded so fucking good. I went back on tour to Germany and then came back and he sang some more. Being the songwriter, the producer, and the arranger, it is actually hard to keep a distance and a good perspective on things. So it was actually really good for me to go away from it for a while and come back. It was also a great thing to bring in Roy Z to mix it. He came in like an outsider and he was very cool. I produced and engineered the whole thing. I miked up the drums and the whole nine yards. It was cool; I liked it. I have always been involved in that, but I have also always had an engineer there. I am getting better at it so I was confident enough that I could do it.
Classic Rock Revisited: How did you get Roy Z involved?
Yngwie: I needed someone to mix. I know K.K. Downing from PRIEST and he told me to check this guy out, so I did. He came in and goes, "Hey let's try this" and he throws an eight thousand dollar compressor on a snare drum. I go, "What the fuck are you doing that for?" Then I hear it and I go, "Fuck, that really sounds good." I have all this shit lying around and half the time I don't even know where it is. I learned a lot from Roy.
Classic Rock Revisited: Roy has made the last two PRIEST records sound awesome. Roy has an ear for heavy metal.
Yngwie: He really makes everything stand out. He was like, "We should do it with ProTools." I told him, "Oh no, brother, this is old school. This is live guitar and live drums. This is like ZEPPELIN and PURPLE recorded." I didn't use any samples or triggers — nothing. This is all the real deal.
Classic Rock Revisited: This album will be successful because it feels good. How do you know when you are just sitting around playing and when you are really being creative?
Yngwie: That is a very good question because I don't really know, but I kind of sense it. The way I play is so spontaneous. I have to be clever about it. If I don't like it, and I don't feel that it is the one, then I just do will do it tomorrow — that is the beauty of having your own studio. I bought this house about fifteen years ago. It is a colonial old mansion sort of thing. It had servants quarters. I completely gutted one of the servants quarters and filled it up with Marshall stacks and hardwired it up to the control room where the heads are. It is a permanent guitar setup. I don't have to worry about miking shit up or anything. I push a button and there it is. It is such a sweet deal because I don't have to worry about anything. There is a track on the new album called "Caprici Di Diablo" and that was taking the bull by the horns, brother. I said to myself that I was just going to push it all the way out. The whole idea behind this record is my motto: More is more. Some people say less is more, but I say more is more. Like I said, as this album was coming along, I knew I needed someone like Tim. The first song we did was "Live to Fight Another Day". After doing the vocals, I went back to do the guitars again, because everything was up another notch higher. It has taken a year and a half to do this fucking album. It really turned out to be a good thing. A lot of things fell into place making this record. I think this record captures my passion more than any of my other records. When I play live is when it really comes out. On my records I like to have a couple of clams on there, that really makes the ones that have the fire stand out. I wouldn't say clams — I really threw myself over the cliff on that one [laughter]. The chance-taking is going to be more rewarding when you play it live, but there is also the chance you will fall on your ass.

Blaze Bayley Interview
UK-based heavy metal vocalist Blaze Bayley ( IRON MAIDEN, WOLFSBANE) was interviewed by the Belfast Telegraph one day before his wife/manager Debbie died late last month after suffering a stroke while in the hospital. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On his latest album, "The Man Who Would Not Die":
"This is such an important record for me. A few years ago I was broke, depressed, without a record contract and I didn't have a band. It was a dark time for me. I was considering giving it up and throwing in the towel. But then I met Debbie, who is now my wife and manager. I've known her nearly all my life. We grew up together in Tamworth and fate seemed to bring us together again. She's been instrumental in the making of this album and getting my head together."
On WOLFSBANE:
"I'm immensely proud of the Wolfsbane days. You know the way our fan-club was called the Howling Mad S**t-Heads? Well, we were even worse. When I left the band to join MAIDEN it caused a bit of bad blood between me and the guys, but that's all water under the bridge now and we've played a few reunion shows together which were great fun and just like the old days."
On fronting IRON MAIDEN in the mid-Nineties:
"The mid-Nineties were a horrible time to be in a rock band. Grunge and Britpop bands were everywhere and we [ MAIDEN] felt like we weren't getting a fair crack of the whip as far as the UK and American press was concerned. If you had long hair and your songs lasted more than four minutes you were old-fashioned. Thankfully those days are long gone. Metal never goes out of fashion because it was never in fashion in the first place.”
"Fronting IRON MAIDEN was and still is the biggest job in the world. For five years I was that man and I had to shoulder the burden. Do I have any regrets about it? Of course not. It was a brilliant way to see the world and make a living. The only thing I didn't like was not being able to see the fans after a show. In the WOLFSBANE days I would head out on the town with them as I don't see a difference between someone who comes to a show and someone who sings in a band. We all love music and that's what bonds us together, but MAIDEN is such a huge machine that there's no room to meet fans after the gigs as everything was scheduled and set in motion days in advance."
On his fans:
"The connection between myself and my audience is hugely important to me. It kept me going through the bad times and is one of the reasons why there is such a change in my lyrics from 'Silicon Messiah' and 'Tenth Dimension' to 'Blood and Belief' and 'The Man Who Would Not Die'.
"A few years ago I decided to stop singing about sci-fi situations and fantasy stuff and drop that persona altogether in favour of being completely honest about my thoughts. I think listeners appreciate it more."
On what words of advice would he give to the young Bayley of 1984 when he was just starting out:
"When I was younger I was guilty of pushing myself too much. I never took time to appreciate anything that I ever achieved because I was always looking at what I could do next. If I could give myself some advice when I first started I'd say — just try to enjoy it more and live in the moment. Sometimes life can be too short."

This was just funny at the end, it's so seriously put haha.
The Pulse of Radio reports that NIRVANA frontman Kurt Cobain's ashes were not stolen earlier this year despite tabloid reports that they were, according to Gigwise.com. Alan Nierob, publicist for Cobain's widow Courtney Love, said that a story alleging that Cobain's ashes were taken from Love's Hollywood home along with clothes and jewelry was "erroneously reported" and that the ashes were "never taken." Nierob issued his comments after an Australian artist claimed she would smoke Cobain's ashes in a joint as part of a performance art installation in Berlin later this month.
Natascha Stellmach claimed in Art World that she had acquired Cobain's ashes through "magic" and that smoking them would release the late singer and guitarist "into the ether from the media circus."
Inquiries about what Stellmach is currently smoking have not received a response.

Lemmy Interview
Keith Carmen of Canada's Exclaim! magazine recently conducted an interview with MOTÖRHEAD frontman Lemmy Kilmister. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
Exclaim!: What have been your career highs and lows?
Lemmy: "The high was probably going straight in at number one [for their 1981 live album 'No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith']. The low was probably just after it. You couldn't do another live album to go straight in at number one, could you?"
Exclaim!: What do you think of when you think of Canada?
Lemmy: "That large country just above the States and to one side of Russia. Canada's always a great place for us. We've always had a good time up there and people are great."
Exclaim!: What was the first LP/cassette/CD/eight track you ever bought with your own money?
Lemmy: " 'The Buddy Holly Story' on vinyl."
Exclaim!: What has been your strangest celebrity encounter?
Lemmy: "[ EAGLES guitarist] Joe Walsh once tapped me on the shoulder in a bar at the CMJ Convention. He said, 'I've wanted to meet you for a long time,' then turned around and walked away from me. Very strange. I never saw him again. But what an incredible introduction, huh?"

Stephen Pearcy Plans New Project
RATT frontman Stephen Pearcy has announced a new project for 2009, TOP FUEL ALL STARZ. The new CD and touring band will consist of '80s, '90s, 2000 artists. Pearcy says he'll even have a couple influential '70s artists that he admired growing up on the CD, that there will be plenty of class musicians revolving on the tour. The band will perform material from the artists involved and the new music from TOP FUEL ALL STARZ. With songs already written, recording will begin January 2009 with a tour to follow.
In other news, Pearcy — who is the president and CEO of Top Fuel Records — will again be involved in sponsoring a Top Fuel Dragster 2009 with Top Fuel Records. The new CD and tour will follow the NHRA Drag Racing series thru out the season 2009. The new race team and TFR sponsor association will hopefully be announced at the world finals in Pamona, California in November where Stephen and his RAT BASTARDS will be laying it down at the races.
Stephen Pearcy recently released his third solo CD, "Under My Skin".

Burrr January 19th In minneapolis In gonna have to wear extra leather to this one...LOL [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bazooka Joe from Tuesday, September 30, 2008 11:45:25 AM) | | Bazooka Joe wrote: | | Sebastian Bach Interview
Mick Burgess of Norway's Metal Express Radio recently conducted an interview with former SKID ROW vocalist Sebastian Bach. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Metal Express Radio: Do you think it's important in this day and age to be able to offer something extra to the fans to encourage fans to buy the product rather than downloading it?
Bach: I've sold 22 million SKID ROW records and if the fans don't get [ Bach's new solo album] "Angel Down", then it's their loss. It is just as good, if not better than those records, and I should know — I've heard those records a million times and I've heard "Angel Down" a million times and it's right up there with them. If you've spent 15 years listening to "Slave To The Grind" then it's your loss not getting "Angel Down". It's really, really good. All the fans keep telling me it is and the reviews do too.
Metal Express Radio: "Angel Down" [was] released in the UK on DR2 Records which is linked to Demolition Records. How did you get involved with Demolition?
Bach: Demolition offered me a record deal at the time when Spitfire was giving me a deal. Both are labels from the UK. Demolition picked up because the people that work at EMI in the UK must be brain dead or something. EMI has the right to put out my record everywhere in the world and they put it out everywhere except the UK. I can't understand why they didn't put it out especially after we'd sold out two nights at Wembley and me and Axl [ Rose] did a record together so I'm sure most of them would be interested in getting this so I don't know how many nights you have to sell out before they'll put your record out.
Metal Express Radio: Do you think being a priority act on a specialist hard rock label is more beneficial to you than being one of many artists on a major label who in many cases don't know how to market rock bands?
Bach: What label would not want to release the new Axl Rose material?? Forget about me — there's three songs on there with Axl Rose that people will want to hear. That's nuts. EMI's loss is DR2's gain.
Metal Express Radio: You've always seemed to be a music fan who found himself in a successful rock band and you never seem to have lost your enthusiasm for other bands. Your love of KISS and RUSH, amongst others, is well known. Do you still feel that sense of excitement when you hear some great music that makes you sit up and take notice?
Bach: I listen to music constantly. My iPod is always on. If I'm in the dressing room before the gig I'll be cranking out heavy metal from HATEBREED, OZZY to MALICE, EZO to ANVIL and MANOWAR's "Battle Hymns"; it's just so heavy, we all love it. In my iPod, I've got HATEBREED next to HELLYEAH next to HANOI ROCKS, so with a little flick of my thumb I can listen to something that was recorded today or something that was recorded 25 years ago. I don't analyze what I listen to, I just listen to what I want. I just love music.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on the fan-generated controversy over the audio quality of the group's new album, "Death Magnetic".
Several articles from both the mainstream press and recording industry web sites have discussed the album in context of the so-called "Loudness Wars," a term used by UK publication The Guardian, which claims that the music industry is trying to make recordings as loud as possible mainly to stand out on radio.
An audio clip has surfaced on YouTube comparing music from the "Death Magnetic" CD to tracks from the album used for Guitar Hero, which were prepared differently. A number of fans prefer the Guitar Hero versions.
A petition circulated by some fans asking the band to remix the CD has gathered 12,000 signatures, although they are dwarfed by the nearly a million copies the CD has sold in the U.S. since going on sale September 12.
Ted Jensen, the engineer who mastered the album at Sterling Sound in New York, recently responded to fan complaints that the CD is too loud and the audio is pushed to distortion levels by writing, "I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me, I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."
Mastering is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device, the "master," from which all copies will be produced.
Blame for the sound quality has been laid at the feet of the band itself, producer Rick Rubin and his recording engineer, Greg Fidelman.
In a brand new interview with Blender.com, Ulrich responded to the complaints by saying, "Listen, there's nothing up with the audio quality. It's 2008, and that's how we make records. Rick Rubin's whole thing is to try and get it to sound lively, to get it to sound loud, to get it to sound exciting, to get it to jump out of the speakers. Of course, I've heard that there are a few people complaining. But I've been listening to it the last couple of days in my car, and it sounds fuckin' smokin'.
"Somebody told me about [people complaining that the Guitar Hero version of 'Death Magnetic' sounds better]. Listen, what are you going to do? A lot of people say [the CD] sounds great, and a few people say it doesn't, and that's OK. You gotta remember, when we put out '...And Justice for All', people were going, 'What happened to these guys, this record? There's no bass on it. It sounds like it was recorded in a fuckin' garage on an eight-track.' And now '...And Justice for All' is sort of the seminal METALLICA record that supposedly influenced a whole generation of death-metal bands. The difference between back then and now is the Internet.
"The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice. Listen, I can't keep up with this shit. Part of being in METALLICA is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing: 'James Hetfield had something for breakfast that I don't like.' That's part of the ride.
"I will say that the overwhelming response to this new record has exceeded even our expectations as far as how positive it is. So I'm not gonna sit here and get caught up in whether [the sound] 'clips' or it doesn't 'clip.' I don't know what kind of stereos these people listen on. Me and James made a deal that we would hang back a little and not get in the way of whatever Rick's vision was. That's not to put it on him — it's our record, I'll take the hit, but we wanted to roll with Rick's vision of how METALLICA would sound."

NEW YORK — Just as vinyl once gave way to compact discs as the main physical medium for music, could CDs be replaced now by a fingernail-sized memory card?
Perhaps not entirely, but SanDisk Corp., four major record labels and retailers Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are hoping that albums sold on microSD memory cards will at least provide an additional stream of sales.
The companies unveiled plans Monday to sell memory cards loaded with music in the MP3 format, free of copy protections.
Called "slotMusic," the new format is meant to address two intertwined trends.
Most albums are still sold in a physical format — 449 million were sold on CDs in 2007, while 50 million were sold digitally, according to Nielsen SoundScan — yet CDs are decreasingly popular. Albums sold on CD dropped almost 19 percent last year.
Given this, the record labels — Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp. and EMI Group PLC — are hoping slotMusic can be another physical revenue source, and one that is more versatile than CDs given the kinds of gadgets people carry around these days.
Unlike when the CD was introduced and people had to buy new players, many people already have the ability to play slotMusic albums, since many cell phones and multimedia players support microSD cards.
These new albums will come with a small USB dongle that lets buyers use them with computers, too. [The USB dongle will also enable users to transfer the songs to iPods, which don't have memory-card slots, via a PC.]
"Particularly in this kind of economic climate, the idea of being able to use an electronic device you already own to enjoy music rather than going out and buying a dedicated player is pretty compelling," said Daniel Schreiber, who heads the audio-video business unit at SanDisk, which created the microSD card format and is working on the technology behind slotMusic.
Schreiber said slotMusic albums will be sold on 1 gigabyte microSD cards, which means they will be able to hold a full album and related content such as liner notes and cover art.
Buyers will be able to use extra space on the cards to hold songs and photos from their own collections.
[The files will be MP3s encoded at a bitrate of 320 samples per second, the highest possible setting ensuring roughly CD-quality sound.]
The cards and dongles will come in boxes similar to current CD packaging, and Schreiber expects the cost of slotMusic releases to be "in the ballpark" of current CD prices.
It's not yet known exactly when — or how many — albums will be initially sold in the format, but Schreiber expects retailers to give a "sizable amount of shelf space" to slotMusic albums.
The albums are expected to debut at multiple retailers, including Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores in the U.S., and later in Europe.
Rio Caraeff, executive vice president of Universal Music Group's eLabs digital music unit, said the label will initially release about 30 titles in the slotMusic format. The titles will include old and new albums, such as one by singer Akon.
"We want to provide the benefits of digital music to people who go to physical retail environments," he said.
Asked whether he sees the format taking the place of the CD, Caraeff said, "I think we would certainly hope that would be the case, but I don't think we are so tied to that."
NPD Group entertainment analyst Russ Crupnick sees a potential for slotMusic to emerge as a compelling format.
He said the industry needs "desperately" to give people a new reason to head back into the music sections at brick-and-mortar stores.
"Not that we want them out of the gaming section, but once they're done looking at 'Guitar Hero' we want them to come look at the music section," he said.

THIS SUCKS!

Rush To Release "Snakes & Arrows Live" DVD
According to Amazon.com, Canadian rock trio RUSH will release its new concert DVD, "Snakes & Arrows Live" (see artwork below), on November 18. The set — which was filmed in Rotterdam, Netherlands, during the 2007 leg of the band's "Snakes & Arrows" tour — is expected to feature the same track listing as RUSH's "Snakes & Arrows Live" album which was released this past April.
A spokesperson for RUSH has denied Internet reports that the band is leaving Atlantic Records for the independent Canadian company Rounder. In fact, "RUSH are still contracted to Atlantic for one more album," the spokeperson told Classic Rock magazine. Rounder — whose roster includes GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS, ALISON KRAUSS, THE TRAGICALLY HIP and BRUCE COCKBURN — "will be issuing the trio's upcoming 'Snakes & Arrows Live' DVD, but that's as far as the arrangement goes."
RUSH has been with Atlantic Records since 1989's "Presto" and has released a total of seven studio and four live albums for the label.
RUSH's most recent concert leg wrapped July 24 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The group has been out behind its 18th studio album, "Snakes & Arrows", which marked RUSH's first set of all-new material since 2002's "Vapor Trails".
RUSH's songs "Closer to the Heart" and "Working Man" were recently made available for the Rock Band video game.
RUSH will receive a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame next year.
Lars Ulrich Interview
Australia's News.com.au recently conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On his life away from METALLICA:
"We all live quiet normal lives in the suburbs outside San Francisco, taking our kids to school. My responsibilities are to wake up at 6.30 in the morning and make the lunch boxes. Hanging out in Paris doing TV shows and having nice fancy dinners and drinking expensive French wine, it's not exactly hard work. I tell the people with me that they have permission to slap me if I ever complain. None of them slap me enough because they are scared but I do encourage them."
"I look increasingly at METALLICA as my escape away from my real responsibilities which are my kids and family and my domestic situation. A lot of people use the word job or work, but this is fun, it's an escape to go away on tour. I get more sleep on tour than when I am at home."
On "Death Magnetic":
"It's not the most cheery of records. There's a thread going through all the songs, through death and suicide, despair and misery and fuckedupness. 'Death Magnetic' was a way, an expression of summing all that up.
"The lyrics are always important to METALLICA. They can't be forced and these ones came out quite late in the process, all from the twisted mind of one James Hetfield."
"I was stunned at how great the lyrics were. And stunned how much shit was going on in his head, how many issues are lingering in the poor man's head. So I was pleased from the creative viewpoint but a little concerned about the guy."
On who made the first call to get METALLICA back in the studio:
" Mick Jagger. And I'll tell you why it was Mick Jagger. One of his reps called up METALLICA's reps in the fall of 2005 and asked if we would play with THE ROLLING STONES in San Francisco. Our response was 'Fine, fuck it, we'll play with the STONES because it's something everyone should do once.' We met up a week before the shows after the better part of a year off and started rehearsing and hanging out. We had such a good time that literally the day after the STONES show, we went in and started going through the demo tapes."
On the recording process:
"When you are trying to nail something in the studio, you have to bring an extra physicality because of the lack of an audience; you have to find it yourself, turn it up not just to 11 but to 12. We don't do many takes — six, eight, maybe 10 — and then we are done with it and you usually get three or four hours out of us at that level. There's definitely a routine for us in the studio and it also involves having a steam and yoga and fruit plates."
Of course all that happens behind closed doors and best it stays there so metal fans can remain blissfully oblivious to such gentle behaviour.
On the fact that the album's first two singles, "The Day That Never Comes" and "Cyanide", have made it onto the singles charts despite the fact that they are each more than six-and-a-half minutes long:
"That is a victory. There's a lot of love and goodwill and positive momentum for this METALLICA record. Let's see in six months whether it sticks."

More Details On the Best Christmas Album Ever!
On October 14, Armoury Records, distributed by Eagle Rock Entertainment, will release one mighty molten metal blast of good CD cheer: "We Wish You A Metal Xmas And A Headbanging New Year".
It's an all-star assemblage as members of such great hard rock bands as FOO FIGHTERS, QUEENSRŸCHE, DIO, ALICE COOPER, ZZ TOP, DOKKEN, KISS, L.A. GUNS, MARILYN MANSON, MOTÖRHEAD, BLACK SABBATH, KING'S X, JUDAS PRIEST, ANTHRAX, RATT, STYX, TOTO and more all jam out together on some of the most beloved holiday songs of all time (including "Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer").
The kick is in the chemistry between the musicians as members of different bands perform together on the material to create a one-of-a-kind listening experience! MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy, ZZ TOP's Billy Gibbons and FOO FIGHTERS' Dave Grohl, for instance, team up on "Run Rudolph Run", a song popularized by Chuck Berry. This is just one of 12 such irresistible pairings.
"This is a metal CD you will want to listen to all year round," says Wendy Dio, who put the project together with Bob Kulick and Brett Chassen. "It has been a very exciting and exhausting project, but we have managed to get an all-star cast together."
Ironically, the hardest person to get was Dio himself as he doesn't sing Christmas songs. Wendy hounded him for days, finally getting him to listen to Kulick's arrangement of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". Dio liked it, added a few bits, recorded it at Kulick's studio, and got Tony Iommi to add his signature guitar sound. The result is a very SABBATH Christmas song. Rounding out the circle of familiar characters on this track are DIO bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Simon Wright.
"The 'Metal Xmas' album was a great opportunity to pay homage to my least favorite holiday," says Dio, "and what a lineup of musicians to do it with! The arrangements of the classic noel songs are fresh and heavy with rock'n'roll, and the performances are equally classic. It's a magical way to change your holiday listening."

Robert Trujillo Interview
RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
RollingStone.com: You joined METALLICA in February, 2003. How much did you know about the dynamics within the band at the time?
Robert: They were in the middle of a bunch of transitional things. They were recording the album [ "St. Anger"], still doing tracking and mixing, and also trying to find a new bass player. I received a phone call. I was in Tahiti on vacation. I checked my voice mail, and I had Lars and Kirk on there. Lars was in the background: "Join our band!" They were probably out on the town, having a few cocktails, calling all the bass players on their list.
RollingStone.com: Do you know how you got on that list?
Robert: I'm not 100 percent sure. I think it was a combination of things. One was I toured with METALLICA, with SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. That's where I originally met everybody. And less than a year prior to me receiving the call, a mutual friend of Kirk's called and said, " Kirk and I are coming down with some friends. Can you show us some surf spots around L.A.?" I thought that was neat: that Kirk, the vampire I knew, the nocturnal man, was ready to explore daylight and surfing in Southern California. He was in an RV with three friends. We spent a weekend hitting different spots.
The whole thing, at least from what I understand, was they each had people they wanted to bring into the auditions. I became Kirk's guy. From my understanding, Lars wasn't aware of much that I had done. [In addition to playing with SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, Trujillo toured and recorded with OZZY OSBOURNE and worked with ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell.] I don't know where James' head was at.

Lars Ulrich Interview
RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
RollingStone.com: Which is better — traveling to METALLICA shows with your family or the way you used to do it with the band? Four on the bus, like a fist.
Lars: The four fists on the bus, one fist and four beers on the bus [laughs] — that was a lot of fun. But if you're going to do this in the prime years of your family life, when you're rearing the kids, then basing becomes the way to solve it. Park yourself in a city — Copenhagen, London, Paris. You hop in and out. It may not be the most cost-effective way of touring. But big picture — it's the way of keeping everybody sustained. Everybody gets their elbow room. What you don't need is a party policy, where people are dictated to, what they can or can't do. That's not going to make it fun. It's not going to give people what they need to administer their own survival skills, to get through this insanity.
RollingStone.com: Is there a price that comes with that? The unity of the band?
Lars: To me, it has to start with getting along. If we don't get along, everything else is irrelevant. If you've got four guys that are content, who get along, everything else will happen automatically. When we come to Europe every year, it's basically what we call Summer Vacation. Bring the families, park ourselves, play gigs. Where else would you rather be than western European capitals in the summer? Playing festivals with great bands, cool vibes, the long days? This is fucking paradise.
I don't take any of this shit for granted. There are no absolutes in my life. I don't think in black and white. I think in grays. Who knows where it's gonna go? But for right now, this works. It works for the family. It works for the band. And I don't think there's ever been a better internal vibe in this band. And the place where that shows and makes a difference — those two hours onstage. Because the reports I'm hearing from the people I trust — there's more fire, more spunk, more in-your-face-ness. Somehow, through the bloat of the Nineties, the excess, it's gotten back to being on fire again. Maybe it shouldn't be overanalyzed. If people are content, with themselves and their families and each other, then it shows in those two hours onstage.

James Hetfield Interview
RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
RollingStone.com: You have been in METALLICA for your entire adult life. Have you ever felt restricted?
James: I made myself feel restricted: "I'm tired of arguing. I'm not gonna argue for another five hours about something little and stupid. You win. This is Lars' band. When I'm able to be me, it'll be the side project, the solo thing." Which is just ridiculous. Every band that I've known that has done side projects or things like that — I don't respect them anymore.
RollingStone.com: There are very strict parameters to life in METALLICA. It's like joining the Army.
James: The metal militia, dude! We've all discovered there is freedom through structure. There has to be some structure in my life, at least. I think Lars has discovered that a lot. You could look at Jason [ Newsted] as the sacrificial lamb. I didn't want him doing 12 side projects: "You're in METALLICA." But it was so unconnected when he left [in 2001], so compartmentalized. But now, METALLICA is the four of us. This is our solo project. This is the best way to get our emotions and feelings out and touch people.
RollingStone.com: Was there a clear leader in the beginning? You or Lars?
James: There were leaders in different ways. There's no doubt Lars was the spearhead of wanting to get a band together. But I was the same, and we joined forces. Lars had the name. I had the logo. He was more the business guy, the thinker. I'm much less of a thinker. And there was his personality, the only child growing up in a pretty well-off family.
RollingStone.com: A well-off bohemian family.
James: Yeah, getting to do what he wants, anytime, anywhere. The negative side of that, somewhat obvious — spoiledness. But the positive side of that is he can get it done. He has the faith he can get it done. There are times when I think all of us follow his energy. There's fear at times. I can see it in him, when he feels like he's not getting his way. We always revert to our teenage years [laughs].

Kirk Hammet Interview
RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
RollingStone.com: Was there a point when you realized you were a rock star?
Kirk: It was probably the "Black Album" tour, when thing started to get really crazy. We would go to social events, and Ozzy would come up to us — "Hello!" Or we'd get a message — " Tony Iommi is here. He wants to say hello." If our heroes, the people we were so inspired by, are interested in us now, we might have crossed a line somewhere. We had reached a level, in musicianship, in respectability. It was a powerful feeling.
RollingStone.com: Did it also make you realize that your friend was right — rock stars are normal too?
Kirk: There came a time when you started feeling comfortable with them, and realizing, yeah, they have the same mechanics as every other human being in the world. Just because they played that fantastic guitar solo in 1978 does not make them non-human. I hope that carries on to people when they meet me. I'm always uncomfortable when people start bowing. I'm waiting to shake their hand, and they do that. Just shake my hand! [Laughs]
RollingStone.com: How much do you think you need to be in METALLICA — that there is nothing else you can or want to do? During the making of "St. Anger", when it was clear the engine was not turning over, were you able to accept the fact that nothing lasts forever?
Kirk: Honestly, I was ready to start working on a solo album. I had a bunch of music I was sitting on. I was going to ask Lars to play drums on it. But to get to the real meat of the question . . .
RollingStone.com: The need to be in this band.
Kirk: It's really important. I've been in the band longer than I haven't been. I joined the band when I was 20 years old. I've been in the band now 25 years.

Kirk Hammet Interview
Darryl Sterdan of the Toronto Sun recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
Toronto Sun: So, having a new son or making a new METALLICA album — which is the scarier prospect?
Hammett: Actually, during the creation of this album, I've managed to sire two children! My other son is two years old and this album is three years old, when you go from start to finish. I would say that two little guys are still scarier than this undertaking — and this is a huge undertaking.
Toronto Sun: After "Some Kind of Monster", a lot of people would not have been surprised if you were hesitant to go back into the studio.
Hammett: We've moved on so much from that point. From that period to where we started writing the songs, there was a two-year gap, and in that time we did a lot of touring and we got Rob [Trujillo, bass] in the band. And we started acting and operating and feeling like the unit that we were in the past. So when it came time to start writing the material, we were back to four guys in a room playing our instruments and milking that energy that we create.
Toronto Sun: So how did you recapture the spirit of "Master of Puppets"?
Hammett: We just asked ourselves, "What would we have done if this was 1986?" We kind of put it through that filter, that lens.
Toronto Sun: But if it really was 1986, you would have drunk a bottle of vodka first.
Hammett: Ha! Yeah, definitely. But it started off as an experiment and we started to get some really great results. So we decided to just follow it through. And we continued writing in that dynamic manner that we did back then — which is to fuse a lot of vague, disparate pieces of music together to make them work rather than taking one bit of music and milking it for ideas.
Toronto Sun: So are these songs a lot more enjoyable to play?
Hammett: Oh, they're totally fun for us to play. Are you kidding? We're rehearsing five of them because the intent is to play at least five new songs in our set, because we're tired of playing the same set list for the past three years. Our goal is to always write songs that are fun for us to play. But yeah, that these songs really do stand out — they're just a lot of fun.
Toronto Sun: How long are you going to tour for this album?
Hammett: For as long as we can. We're setting aside a good two years, but it depends on the success of the album and the demand. It takes two years just to play all the places you need to play, especially if you're doing one week on and one week off. And that isn't even counting all the places we've already played that want us back. So it could run into three years.
Toronto Sun: Over the years, you've had this reputation as the George Harrison of the band — the guy who's caught between these two massive egos and doesn't get his due. Is that fair?
Hammett: It's easy to think that. But all the music I write, I write for METALLICA. All my musical motivations are always METALLICA-oriented. It's just the tempers and the egos that I'm stuck between are frustrating, because I want everything to progress and I'm so dedicated to us reaching the goals we set for ourselves. It's not that I don't have a means of expression. I've always been able to express myself in this band. Even with "St. Anger", even though I didn't play a bunch of guitar solos, I was still writing a lot of the music and lyrics — and keeping those guys from tearing each other apart! I had my hands full!

Twisted Sister & Extreme Perform Together
Italian news blog Musica Metal has uploaded photos from the first edition of the Rock Of Ages festival, which was held yesterday (Saturday, September 13) in Milan, Italy.
Pictures of TWISTED SISTER, EXTREME, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED and THE QUIREBOYS can be viewed at this location.
According to Musica Metal, during the final song of TWISTED SISTER's set, "I Wanna Rock", the band was joined onstage by co-headliners EXTREME, who "bowed at the feet of Dee Snider and helped out with the choruses."
Fan-filmed video footage of the "I Wanna Rock" performance can be viewed below (video shot and uploaded by Elia Alovisi, a.k.a. "NergalBehemoth").
All of the bands on the bill appreciated the enthusiastic reception of the Italian audience, with the two headliners issuing on-stage apologies for having neglected Italy on their previous tours: it had been 13 years since EXTREME last played in Italy, and this was only the fourth time in TWISTED SISTER's whole career that Italy had been included in the group's touring schedule.

Rob Halford Message
JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford has told Australia's Perth Now that while he understands that metal has become something of an obvious and ever-ready target for public outrage looking for a scapegoat for society's ills, he takes the form very seriously.
"There are people who don't understand it, but the fact is heavy metal music consistently does good and great things for people," he said. "We have a list a mile long of people who came up and said this song or that record helped them get through a difficult time in their life."
He added: "I think it's fair to say once a metalhead, always a metalhead. A 15-year-old metalhead can stand next to a 60-year-old metalhead and give each other the devil's sign. It really is a unified community."
Regarding the fact that his admission that he was homosexual during a 1998 interview did little to alter his place as one of metal's best-loved singers, Halford said, "It's unusual for anybody in a world-famous metal band to proclaim their sexuality, other than being straight. I was glad I did it, mostly for my own state of mind. You're able to remove all the innuendo and all the snide comments, all the things that people like me have to put up with.
"The fans don't care, they're indifferent. Metal fans are very tolerant, very compassionate people, very smart people and I think they showed their true colors in accepting me for what I am regardless of my sexual orientation."

Quiet Riot Drummer Interview
The Ludwig Drums web site recently conducted an interview with drummer Frankie Banali ( QUIET RIOT, FREAKSHOW). An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Ludwig: What is your schedule like for the next few months?
Frankie Banali: I continue to do sessions. I expect the usual slowdown in November, and then the habitual music industry grinding to a halt in December for the holidays; which invariably continues through January. Then, slowly, the industry resuscitates itself back to some abnormal sense normality in February. I am involved in a new project called FREAKSHOW, which I am excited about. The tracks have now been recorded and mixing will commence around the middle of September. I am really happy with the drum tracks for these recordings and I love the songs. I used the Ludwig reissue Amber Vistalite Zep Set, and they recorded amazingly well. It's not the first time I've used the Ludwig V's in the studio; having done so with both the Amber set, and two of my vintage kits (a yellow 1975 and a clear 1976.) The Vistalites are largely considered by most recording engineers, producers and some musicians as unrecordable; but I beg to differ and I play them wide open.
Ludwig: QUIET RIOT was the first metal band to break through to the mainstream with a chart-topping single and album. What was it like for you to reach this level of success so early in your career?
Frankie Banali: I was fairly realistic when we reached the pinnacle of success, with the "Metal Health" record reaching #1 on the Billboard Top LPs and Tapes chart, and #5 with the single "Cum On Feel The Noize" on Billboard's Hot 110 chart on November 26, 1983. To put into perspective how historic this was, "Metal Health" had to climb over albums by LIONEL RICHIE, MICHAEL JACKSON, THE POLICE and BILLY JOEL — all established hitmakers — which no one would call an easy feat. I also understood that the elusive elevator of success travels both up, and eventually and invariably down. Having said that, I had already been fortunate enough to have recorded the hit single "Mony Mony" for BILLY IDOL's debut EP "Don't Stop", as well as drum tracks for the HUGHES/THRALL record. I had just returned from Germany where I recorded with keyboardist Tony Carey (fresh out of Ritchie Blackmore's RAINBOW) I was already both somewhat experienced and very fortunate. Perspective was somewhat easier for me to comprehend.
Ludwig: Were there any drawbacks?
Frankie Banali: No more than there are in life in general or any other profession. With success comes a lot of demands, which are to be expected. You can't dream of being a successful musician and then complain about the constant touring, which feeds the industry and your career. Yes, the touring was exhausting early on, because we toured under the worst possible circumstances. First in two station wagons and a rental truck, then a Winnebago, then a low end Eagle bus that spewed more exhaust inward than outward. But we were touring! It improved as we earned more money, and time off from the road usually meant that we would fly to L.A. to shoot a video or a TV show. But it was great, it was wonderful and I would not trade one single experience — neither good or bad — because I achieved many of my dreams as a musician along the way. If you look at life as neither being fair or unfair, you get the sense that life is just life; so do the best you can while you can and make the best of it. Enjoy the ride, as much as the ride and you allow it to.

Anyone Have Spike TV?
According to Kotaku, DISTURBED, JUDAS PRIEST and CHEAP TRICK are challenging the top three user bands in the nation tonight on Spike TV's "30 Minutes To Midnight", the official countdown show for the launch of Rock Band 2. The three bands challenge the users to play their songs, among the hardest in the game, with other competitive twists. There will also be a guy who can finish a song playing all four instruments at once.

Death Magnetic Packaging
METALLICA worked with design company Turner Duckworth to create packaging and branding for its new album, "Death Magnetic". Turner Duckworth is better known for designing logos, packaging and visual identity systems for consumer brands like Coca-Cola and Amazon.com than for working with rock bands.
With the music industry in a state of rapid change, the band was looking for new ideas. "This time, we wanted to work with professionals who understand iconography," said James Hetfield, METALLICA's lead singer. Lars Ulrich, the band's drummer and frequent spokesperson added, "We wanted somebody who commanded respect in branding but were not jaded by the music business. Someone who would bring fresh ideas. Enter Turner Duckworth. Enter happy days."
With the growth of downloading, METALLICA was looking for a package that would rekindle interest in CDs. But with the consolidation of music sales in the U.S. into a few national retailers ( Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy), the package had to conform to highly limiting standards. Turner Duckworth's answer was to create an iconic, three dimensional package using a powerful image and an ingenious layered die cut. As Lars Ulrich put it, "We got ourselves a very unique package."
David Turner, partner, Turner Duckworth, said, "The songs are about how death — and life — repels and attracts us. Our image expresses the theme, with a white coffin resting in a grave, surrounded by a magnetic field. But it's also open to other interpretations, which keeps it interesting after multiple viewings. This image really puts the graphic in graphic design." The image was created to be recognizable even on a cell phone screen. "It's not just about sleeve art any more; it's about creating icons that work across media," added Turner. That's a discipline Turner Duckworth understands well; recent work for the Coca-Cola brand has won a slew of international design awards including the Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions.
Turner Duckworth re-worked the classic METALLICA logo, created a signature typographic style and designed key promotional materials including a flag, a coffin shaped special edition and a vinyl boxed set. A design kit including logos, imagery and graphics was distributed to the band's record companies to produce a vast array of promotional materials around the world.
Designers in both London and San Francisco collaborated on the designs. "Everyone got fired up working on this project. METALLICA instinctively understand branding and really appreciate the value we created for them. There was no rock star attitude, just enthusiasm and creativity," said Bruce Duckworth, partner, Turner Duckworth.

Lars Ulrich Interview
Stevie Chick of The Guardian conducted an interview with METALLICA at the end of August when the band was in the UK to play the Reading festival. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On how long they will be able to continue as METALLICA:
Lars Ulrich (drums): "In the immortal words of Noel Gallagher, I'm gonna live forever. [That's] the $64,000 question. THE ROLLING STONES are setting a great precedent, but Charlie Watts doesn't play drums on songs like 'Fight Fire With Fire' every night, no disrespect. Will we be able to play the shit we do when we're 65? I don't know. When it becomes a joke, we'll stop."
On the widely panned 2003 album "St. Anger":
James Hetfield: " 'St Anger' happened because it had to happen. It sounds very disjointed to me when I listen to it now. One-dimensional. Relentless. And that's exactly how we felt at the time: we were disjointed, and I think the resentment we felt towards each other was relentless."
On politics:
James Hetfield: " METALLICA has really tried to be non-political, as much as possible. I write about the human side of it all. I really dislike it when celebrities get up on a soapbox and start giving their opinion. It shouldn't be more valid, because you're popular. It gets in the way of the music. I like to just live, and think, and feel. Politics bore me. Politics separate people, especially where we're from. Politics rarely bring people together."
On not being the same people as they were when they recorded "Master of Puppets":
Lars Ulrich: "I'm 44 years old, I've got three kids, I flew in a helicopter on Friday. It's a little difficult to revisit the vibe of 20 years ago when you're living in a two-bedroom suite at Claridge's. I live a very different life to how I lived then."
On the level of expectation METALLICA still command:
Lars Ulrich: "I was thinking the other day about how everyone expects us to continue to release albums that define the genre, to 'save' metal. And that's a lot of fucking pressure, really. Why hasn't anyone dethroned us yet? We support all the great new metal bands, take them under our wing, but people still want us to carry the whole genre on our backs."
Geoff Tate Interview
QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate recently spoke to Scott Iwasaki of the Deseret News about the singer's upcoming solo shows and the next QUEENSRŸCHE album, which is due in 2009.
On separating his solo music from the music he writes for QUEENSRŸCHE:
"When I write a song I like and present it to the band and they don't like it, then it goes into my solo pile. We have code words in QUEENSRŸCHE to make it more palatable if the song isn't good for the band. They'll say things like 'I can't give that song the passion you want it to have' rather than saying 'What a stupid song."'
On the setlist for his solo performance:
"Coming up with a set list is pretty easy when I'm doing it by myself. I do have a band, and we will be playing my solo album (self-titled release in 2002), but I will also be playing some QUEENSRŸCHE songs that QUEENSRŸCHE doesn't play live.
"I know you can't please everyone, but this way those who know my solo work usually know about my QUEENSRŸCHE work. And those fans may like hearing QUEENSRŸCHE songs that they don't usually hear live."
On the new QUEENSRŸCHE CD, which started with a discussion Tate had with his father, a career military man:
"He fought in Vietnam and Korea and was in the Marines and the Air Force and does some civil servant work for the Navy. One night I asked him about his experiences. He told me for the longest time he didn't want to talk about them but said he'd been thinking about it. So we started talking. And then I asked if I could videotape the discussion. [ Tate's wife and manager, Susan] said, 'You should write a record about these stories.' So I started interviewing more veterans and got people who served in World War II, Iraq, Vietnam, Somalia, Korea — that was really inspiring."
Metallica Tribute
Greg Prato of UGO.com has just published a "Metallica Spotlight" piece featuring tributes from 17 renowned metal musicians (including a section titled "How I Almost Died," which is Oderus Urungus from GWAR recounting a funny METALLICA-related memory). Also included are reviews of all of METALLICA's albums, as well as their "Top 11 Videos."
The musicians paying "tribute" to METALLICA are as follows:
Brian Tatler (DIAMOND HEAD)
King Diamond (MERCYFUL FATE)
Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX)
Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT)
Mille Petrozza (KREATOR)
Mitts (MADBALL)
Matt Baumbach (VISION OF DISORDER)
Thomas Youngblood (KAMELOT)
Jonas Ekdahl (EVERGREY)
Michale Graves (MISFITS)
Rob Arnold (CHIMAIRA)
Brock Lindow (36 CRAZYFISTS)
Trevor Strnad (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER)
Jonny Davy (JOB FOR A COWBOY)
Ivan Moody (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH)
Darrell Roberts (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH)
Harley Flanagan (CRO-MAGS)
Michel "Away" Langevin (VOIVOD)
Oderus Urungus (GWAR)
Below are a couple of excerpts.
Brian Tatler (DIAMOND HEAD):
"As some of you will already know, my band DIAMOND HEAD influenced METALLICA. In 1981, Lars came to England to see and hang out with DIAMOND HEAD, and not long after returning from that trip, he formed METALLICA. Since then, I have watched METALLICA's rise with astonishment. It is one of the hardest things in the world to achieve — going from a garage band to stadium monsters, without ever really losing credibility or deliberately making hit singles. And what is even more difficult is sustaining it. You can hear DIAMOND HEAD's influence in a couple of early songs, but we all take inspiration from somewhere. I have seen METALLICA many times, and they always give 100% — they don't hold anything back for the next show. Such a great band to watch live. I can hear their influence in thousands of bands, who want their phenomenal success. It's down to writing great songs, working very hard at it for 25 years, building an incredible following all over the world, and Lars' business brain. My favorite METALLICA song is 'One'. It has great dynamics and has to be one of the best double kick drum/guitar parts ever recorded."
King Diamond (MERCYFUL FATE):
"One of the great memories of METALLICA is when we met while I was with MERCYFUL FATE in '84. We were playing in San Francisco and they came to the show. I heard they had a Danish drummer and that I might know his dad, the famous Danish tennis player, Torben Ulrich. METALLICA came in, said hi, and later, came out on stage and headbanged during one of our encores. Later, they were recording 'Ride the Lightning' at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen. We had a rehearsal room in the same building and METALLICA happened to need a rehearsal room. So we offered them our room while we were not rehearsing. I remember hearing some riffs and saying, 'Wow,' it was some of the heaviest stuff I had ever heard at the time. 'Creeping Death' is still one of my favorites. This year, I had the honor of performing onstage with METALLICA at Ozzfest. Singing the entire MERCYFUL FATE medley was an incredible experience. We had only practiced two hours the night before, and they had not played the song since '99. It just shows how pro they are and that there is a reason they are the biggest metal band in the world!"
Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX):
"Ummm, I don't think they had an influence on me — I think we were influenced by the same bands. We liked the same style of music — MAIDEN, NWOBHM, MISFITS, etc. I think it came across in our music and attitude. I think for me, the 'Puppets' record was their finest moment. I think Cliff [ Burton] had a lot to do with that sound — it was so fat and precise. I love the song 'Orion' — it still is one of my favorite musical pieces by them. I do think it's all so different now — the media back then didn't really cater to them like they do now...it doesn't really matter anymore, it all seems to be considered great anyway."

Rush Day On VH1
According to a posting on the RUSH fan site RushIsABand.com, VH1 Classic will air a special dubbed "Rush Hashanah" on September 29 in celebration of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah. The 24-hour tribute to RUSH will include two of the band's concerts — including "Rush In Rio" and "R30" — as well as past and present videos from band."
Lemmy Interview
MOTÖRHEAD is featured on the cover of the September 2008 issue of Metal Maniacs. The magazine features an extended interview with bassist/vocalist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister in which he speaks about a wide range of topics, including the band's 24th album, "Motörizer", C.C. DeVille of POISON, SEX PISTOLS, the upcoming "Lemmy" documentary and much more. Excerpts follow:
Metal Maniacs: Bronze Records in Japan just released a series of nine MOTÖRHEAD albums, complete with cardboard sleeves and 24-bit remastering. Do you feel that in some cases the remastering and/or remixing process pisses the soul out of the music, and dulls the bite of the original recordings?
Lemmy: Well, why's it necessary in the first bloody place? If they're worth re-releasing because they're out of print or something, fine, but why not put them out as they were when they first came out? Oh yeah, because some record company guy wants to give a family member a job or something equally ridiculous! And then these greedy fucking labels add bonus tracks or live songs, and totally piss on what the album was at the beginning. If it was good enough to get the band a deal and be released the first time as it was, why add all these bullshit extras? Most of the time the bonus tracks are from different albums, or the live tracks are from a different lineup, it just takes a piss on the original and the people that were involved in the record the first time around. Every time I think about it, I just wanna grab a sword and impale the guy whose idea it was — 18 years later, "hey! Remember me?!" Actually, an axe would probably be better. People tend to fear an axe more than a sword, don't they?
Metal Maniacs: It's the blunt force, I think, instead of something sharp that's gonna take your head off clean.
Lemmy: Yeah, so cleave the desk in half, then the axe is only gonna take your head half-off, [laughs] so it's laying on your shoulder and you're still aware, just running around all panic-stricken… So yeah, an axe is better.
Metal Maniacs: You recently played a show with ALICE COOPER in Birmingham where anything metal, studded or potentially dangerous was banned from the audience, which struck me as silly. Sure, take away the wallet chains, but let the bands play at a billion decibels, and just decimate everyone's eardrums, that's fine!
Lemmy: There are a lot of people like that, but the English seem to be the funniest when it comes to asinine requests. I remember one place we played awhile back, we were advised that "in case of a fire, the phrase ' Mr. Brown is in the garden' will be broadcast over the P.A." Excuse me, but what the fuck? What if I misheard it and suddenly I'm trapped in the exit tunnel with a thousand other idiots who didn't know that Mr. Brown was actually in the garden the whole time!
The September issue of Metal Maniacs is on sale now.

Gamma Ray DVD
GAMMA RAY's long-awaited 2-DVD/2-CD DVD package "Hell Yeah! The Awesome Foursome (And The Finnish Keyboarder Who Didn't Want To Wear His Donald Duck Costume) Live in Montreal", is scheduled for release on October 27 in Europe and November 4 in the U.S. via SPV. The set will feature a multi-camera recording of the band's May 6, 2006 show at Medley in Montreal, Quebec, several "road movies," promotional clips, and footage from the group's January 2008 concert in Barcelona, Spain.
Band leader Kai Hansen looks back at GAMMA RAY's first American tour with pride and great joy, saying: "We had played in the States only once before, so this was our first headliner tour of America. Of course we had no idea what exactly to expect, but the reactions were overwhelming. The tickets sold extremely well, and the atmosphere was amazing night after night. What you see on the footage from Montreal is what we experienced at almost every show."
He continued: "We had been thinking about releasing a live DVD for a long time, especially as our faithful fans had been nagging us about one for years. Unfortunately we'd never had the time to plan and realise such a large-scale project. Well, here you go! This is a DVD the way we like it: diverse and multi-faceted, featuring a musical cross-section of the GAMMA RAY albums recorded by the current line-up since 1998. The road movie speaks for itself, and those nice little extras are great mementoes of our band history to date."
The DVD's humorous subtitle "… And The Finnish Keyboarder Who Didn't Want To Wear His Donald Duck Costume…" refers to keyboardist Eero Kaukomies who plays in the GAMMA RAY cover band GUARDIANS OF MANKIND from Helsinki and who performed with GAMMA RAY during its entire American tour. Hansen explained: "During the tour, Henjo suddenly noticed that Eero has a somewhat duck-like walk. So the crazy idea developed to make him wear a Donald Duck costume at the show in Montreal and present him to the audience. Naturally, this great suggestion didn't meet with much enthusiasm from Eero, and the whole thing became a running gag." Hansen added with a wink: "By the way, the 'awesome foursome' refers to Henjo, Dirk, Daniel and myself, in case you were wondering."
GAMMA RAY will travel to Russia at the beginning of September and is scheduled to tour America and Canada this fall. And the rest of the year? "We are collecting ideas for our next studio album," Hansen revealed. "Quite a few of them have already piled up, so come autumn we will probably begin to sort through them and go to the studio in January 2009."

Re-Release Of "The Blackening"
Roadrunner Records has revealed the details of the U.S. version of the special edition of "The Blackening", MACHINE HEAD's Grammy-nominated masterwork, which is due on October 28, 2008.
(Details of the European version of the special edition of "The Blackening", which will be available on October 27, can be found here.)
Hailed unanimously as the best metal album of 2007 by journalists, metal radio stations and fans alike, "The Blackening" earned a Grammy nomination for the fan-favorite track, "Aesthetics of Hate" and all the while MACHINE HEAD continue to earn "the hardest working band" title with over 19 months on the road in support of "The Blackening" (with five U.S. tours alone) and no signs of stopping soon.
"The Blackening Special Edition" is two-disc CD/DVD set that will feature an assortment of extras, including rare bonus tracks such as covers of IRON MAIDEN's "Hallowed Be Thy Name", over an hour of live performance footage from With Full Force, Download and Rock in Rio festivals, three uncensored music videos for "Aesthetics of Hate", "Now I Lay Thee Down" and "Halo", a "making-of" featurette on each video, "The Making of The Blackening" and expanded artwork. There's also what many hardcore fans have been rabidly waiting for: four never-before-seen performances of MACHINE HEAD celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, "Burn My Eyes", captured in Philadelphia in 2004. This special edition is a must have for any fan of this Bay Area band that is steadily carving out "legendary status" for itself within the metal scene.
MACHINE HEAD spent the summer headlining the second stage of the first annual Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival and the band will cap off two extremely successful years as direct support on METALLICA's U.S. headline tour in December 2008 and January 2009. METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was quoted in Revolver as saying, " 'The Blackening' [is] unbelievable. Unbelievable sound and power. It sounds like a band on fire. They have really turned it on again for me."

JUDAS PRIEST performed a free outdoor mini-concert on September 2 on ABC-TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in Hollywood, California, with two songs ( "Prophecy" and "Breaking the Law") airing on that night's show.

In a posting on his MySpace page, Zombie writes, "Well, I am now holding the finished newly master WHITE ZOMBIE box set in my hands. Yes, it is done! A long time coming but it is here. I'm not sure what the release day is yet, but it shouldn't be much longer. I'm pretty you'll be getting under your Christmas tree. All I can say is boy the early shit is whacked. I haven't heard some of these songs in over twenty years. I don't know what the hell we were thinking. Everything is included on this set. Over 4 and 1/2 hours of music plus tons of never before seen videos. Five discs in all."
Rob Zombie recently spent time in the studio working on material for his next studio album. Zombie wrote in a May 2008 online posting, "Well, we have for the first time ever written more songs than we need for an album. Everything isn't 100% finished, but everything is moving along great."
Zombie's next studio effort will follow up 2006's "Educated Horses", which was his third solo CD. He also released his first concert recording, "Zombie - Live", late last year. Although he's still apparently committed to making music, Zombie recently told Metal Edge magazine that the record labels are "dinosaurs waiting to die."

MOTORHEAD... and some video game thing!! I dunno it's pretty cool if you play the game I guess.
Mindark, developer and operator of Virtual World Entropia Universe, and rock icon Lemmy from MOTÖRHEAD, today announced a partnership in which Lemmy and his band will team up with Mindark to create Motörhead Stadium and Lemmy's Castle within Entropia Universe. The Stadium and Castle are being built utilizing the award-winning CryENGINE2 graphics engine. This will be the virtual universe's first major virtual rock arena and castle that will enable fans to hear exclusive music as well as battle Lemmy's Guardians in hopes of joining his private Virtual Army. Lemmy's Castle will be defended by Guardians, some of whom when defeated, will drop rare and valuable Motörhead Armor Parts. Fans must collect a full set of Motörhead Armor in order to gain entrance to the inner sanctum of Lemmy's Castle and be eligible to join Lemmy's private Army.
Army Privileges will include: the ability to chat with Lemmy online in the army's private chat channel, and the opportunity to compete in special quests and events to win both real and virtual MOTÖRHEAD merchandise. Among the cool prizes will be an exclusive trip to Los Angeles for drinks with Lemmy at the famous Rainbow Bar and Grill on Sunset Blvd.
"The Motörhead Stadium and Lemmy's Castle will add great diversity to Entropia Universe when we launch the upgraded version of Entropia Universe using CryENGINE2," says David Simmonds, Business Development Director at Mindark.
Fans can already download the free software online at Entropia Universe and create a unique avatar which will then be used to visit Motörhead Stadium, where they can view exclusive metal and rock concerts, pre-recorded or broadcast live from around the world. In addition to the live music, fans will be able to create their own social networks and fan clubs, battle monsters to earn real cash, and even manufacture and sell collectable virtual rock merchandise.
Entropia Universe is the first virtual world with a real cash currency that has a fixed exchange rate with the U.S. dollar. Avatars develop professional skills to assist them in gathering natural resources to sell, trade and manufacture. In 2007 alone, the real cash turnover between players in Entropia Universe exceeded $400,000,000 USD! In an era of declining record sales, Entropia's Real Cash virtual platform offers bands, artists, labels and studios an entirely new and extremely valuable method to monetize their content.
MOTÖRHEAD is no stranger to video games, having recently provided a number of tracks for the hit console game Guitar Hero.
