Ian Hill Interview

Greece's Solid Rock recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST bassist Ian Hill. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

Solid Rock: Do you think that a double concept album is rather dangerous or risky during the days of downloading?

Ian Hill: "Everything is a risk during the days of downloading. If it's downloaded legally, that's fine. But illegal downloads are the problem. It sounds like a good idea, music for nothing, but unfortunately, it doesn't cost nothing to produce, it costs a fucking fortune to produce. And it's not really bands like ourselves who lose out, because we've got a huge back catalog and we've got a lot of fans who will go out and buy the album anyway. But the up-and-coming bands, they don't get a chance, they have no option but to give their music away. Record companies aren't giving out many contracts anymore, simply because they're not making any money. It's as simple as that."

Solid Rock: Does JUDAS PRIEST like to try new things?

Ian Hill: "Yeah, we do. We always try to embrace new technologies, new gadgets, and new recording techniques. If it's there we'll try it, if it's good we'll use it, if it doesn't, we don't and we just move on. But I think that it's always been there, it's something that we've always done. Some bands get a certain formula and they stick to it and people love them for it, but we've never done that. We'd stagnate if we did and become predictable and we've always liked to try and be a little bit different and move on and push the envelope a little bit, musically. We've always tried to do that."

Solid Rock: Do you think that there will be future if bands like JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, KISS, AC/DC, MOTÖRHEAD, BLACK SABBATH quit someday?

Ian Hill: "Yes! I think, like I said, that there's a lot of interest in traditional metal. As I said, you often come to find bands that are getting a bit more versatile. Even when the day comes that we can't carry on, for one reason or another, either it's us or MAIDEN or KISS or BLACK SABBATH or many other bands, I think it will carry on. There's another couple of generations there already, waiting in the wings."

Solid Rock: After the tour what will be the next step for JUDAS PRIEST?

Ian Hill: "This tour will go round the world with us now with a similar setlist to what we have now. We're playing two from the new record, 'Prophecy' and 'Messenger Of Death'. And then, when we've done that, we are planning to try and do 'Nostradamus' in its entirety, go out and do a tour and just play whole album. It'll be interesting. It's something that we're looking forward to and it's a lot of work. It's in the future; so we don't have any timeslots yet. We're still at the beginning of this tour, but towards the end we can start to make plans."

Classical Violinist Performs Cowboys From Hell

Video footage of acclaimed classical violinist Rachel Barton Pine and cellist Mike Block performing Rachel's arrangement of "Cowboys From Hell" by PANTERA for a faculty concert at Mark O'Connor's Strings Conference in San Diego on July 31, 2008 can be viewed below.

"I've been a big heavy metal fan since I was 12, groups like PANTERA, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX, METALLICA, SLAYER," Rachel, 33, said in a 2004 interview. "So it was very natural for me to go on these [rock radio] stations and talk about my favorite bands, and I think it helps break down those barriers for my peers — to hear that a classical musician can also like the music that they like."

Pine's heavy metal penchant comes to the fore in 1997's "Storming the Citadel", according to The Republican. With her "rock trio" STRINGENDO (Barton Pine and Edgar Gabriel, violins, and Brandon Vamos, cello), she covers her favorite songs by bands ranging from LED ZEPPELIN ("Heartbreaker", "Black Dog", and "Stairway to Heaven") and BLACK SABBATH ("Paranoid") through AC/DC ("Thunderstruck" and "Back in Black") to METALLICA ("One" and "Fade to Black").

Ripper Solo Album

Guitarist Chris Caffery (SAVATAGE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA) has revealed more information about his collaboration with singer Tim "Ripper" Owens' (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) on a song for Tim's forthcoming solo CD. Caffery writes on his MySpace blog, "[On] Thursday September 4] I went into Bob Kulick's studio to record guitars for a song I wrote with Ripper for his new solo CD. The song is called 'The Shadows Are Alive'. Frickin' heavy tune! The studio is called Office Studios. Great place, it was awesome to work with Bob and his engineer Brett. The drums were played by Simon Wright [DIO, AC/DC] and I believe bass is coming soon from Mr. Rudy Sarzo [DIO, QUIET RIOT]! Not sure of Ripper's plan of attack but he said I could let you all know about the recording... This CD is going to smoke!"

Owens's forthcoming solo album will reportedly be released before the next BEYOND FEAR CD and will also feature a guest appearance by QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist Michael Wilton, among others.

BEYOND FEAR's self-titled debut album came out in May 2006 via SPV Records.

Owens' first album as the lead singer for YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, "Perpetual Flame", will be released on October 14, 2008. The CD will be the first-ever Yngwie effort to be released via Rising Force Records (distributed via Koch).

Message From Sebastian Bach

Former SKID ROW singer Sebastian Bach has posted a message on his MySpace blog regarding the alleged "cancellation" of his previously announced October 30 concert at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and other Canadian dates that were expected to take place around the same time. He writes, "I don't get it. None of these shows were ever confirmed. I do not ever cancel any shows. I have no idea why any of these shows went on sale. I never announced them on my site because they were never confirmed. We wanted to do the tour, we were gonna do the tour, but the offers that we got made it impossible for us to actually do the tour. So 'Bach to the drawing board'. (Sorry, had to do it!) No show or tour was ever cancelled — because no show or tour was ever booked! I have no clue why any of these shows went on sale, but there are no shows at all planned at this time. I hope to see you all again soon though! It was a great 2008!"

Sebastian Bach's "Angel Down" limited-edition CD/DVD package, featuring "Roadrage", a film by Sebastian Bach, was made available in the USA as an FYE exclusive at all FYE stores nationwide and also at the FYE booth on the POISON tour. "Roadrage" features five tracks, "100% live, pro-shot" on the 2006 North American GUNS N' ROSES/SEBASTIAN BACH tour.

"Angel Down" was produced by Roy Z (BRUCE DICKINSON, HALFORD, JUDAS PRIEST), and recorded at Sound City Studios and Under City Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Joining Bach in the studio were guitarists "Metal" Mike Chlasciak and Johnny Chromatic, Bobby Jarzombek on drums, and Steve DiGiorgio on bass. GUNS N' ROSES' Axl Rose makes a special guest appearance contributing vocals on three of the album's songs — "(Love is a) Bitchslap", a cover of AEROSMITH's "Back In the Saddle" and "Stuck Inside".

An e-card for "Angel Down" can be found at this location.

New Firehouse Album Planned

Sleaze Roxx recently conducted an interview with FIREHOUSE guitarist Bill Leverty. When asked what his future plans were, Bill replied, "I just released my second solo album called 'Southern Exposure'. This one is instrumental music. I hope to do more guitar clinics for Randall amps and play some of the material off this album in 2009. As for FIREHOUSE, we plan on starting to work on our next album this winter. We'll continue to tour as much as possible because we love to play live."

Slash Interview

VanityFair.de recently conducted an interview with VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash. Amn excerpt from the chat follows.

VanityFair.de: What do you think "Chinese Democracy" — the album your former colleague Axl Rose has been working on for ten years now — will sound like?

Slash: To tell you the truth: I already listened to it. At first I thought that I would never listen to it until it's released, but someone handed it to me and I was in my car and I was like, "Okay, let's give it a try." So I listened to it: It's a really good record. It's very different from what the original GUNS N' ROSES sounded like, but it's a great statement by Axl. Now you understand where he was heading all this time. It's a record that the original GUNS N' ROSES could never possibly make. And at the same time it just shows you how brilliant Axl is. So it was a relief for me to actually hear it.

VanityFair.de: Many of the songs already leaked to the Internet and a blogger was arrested by the FBI recently, because he published the material on his website…

Slash: All the Napster stuff and all these people who talk about illegal file sharing killing the record business and taking money out of the artists' pockets! It may be true. But Napster was just a reaction to the record business not catching up with the development of the Internet. Napster was inevitable. But when somebody takes somebody's work and releases it prematurely just to become famous, it's an incredibly selfish and criminal thing to do. A record is a piece of art. And it shouldn't be released until the creator decides to release it — and I don't care how long it took to make it.

VanityFair.de: Do you use the internet yourself?

Slash: I'm an old-school guy. I only got a laptop within the last five years — and I hate it. The only new piece of technology I use on a regular basis is my Blackberry. I became addicted to it. No wonder it's often called "Crackberry."

Motley Crue To Re-Release Entire Catalog.... Again.

MÖTLEY CRÜE will reissue its complete studio catalog on September 30, 2008 on Mötley Records/Eleven Seven Music (RED Distribution). The catalog includes eight chart-topping studio albums originally released between 1981 and 2000:

* "Too Fast For Love" (1981)
* "Shout at the Devil" (1983)
* "Theatre of Pain" (1985)
* "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1987)
* "Dr. Feelgood" (1989)
* "Mötley Crüe" (1994)
* "Generation Swine" (1997)

The band has sold over 80 million albums, 25 million in the U.S. alone, with six singles reaching the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard chart.

Also released on the same day will be 17 of the band's classic music videos which will be available for download online via all digital music stores.

The "uncensored" version of MÖTLEY CRÜE's video for the song "Mutherfucker of the Year" can be viewed below. The track comes off the group's new album, "Saints of Los Angeles", which has sold 212,000 copies in the United States since its June 24 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD is MÖTLEY CRÜE's first studio album since 2000's "New Tattoo", which has sold a little over 200,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The band's last studio effort with all of its original members was 1997's "Generation Swine", which debuted and peaked at No. 4 on The Billboard 200, and has sold more than 300,000 units.

According to Billboard, the 99,000 bow of "Saints" represented the biggest sales week for MÖTLEY CRÜE since Christmas week of 1991, when its hits package "Decade of Decadence" sold 121,000.

"Saints of Los Angeles" is loosely based on the band's memoir, "The Dirt", which was published in 2001.

MÖTLEY CRÜE's "Crüe Fest" kicked off on July 1 in West Palm Beach, Florida and hit 40 cities before wrapping up on August 31.

MÖTLEY CRÜE's tour in 2005/2006 grossed $46.3 million and drew more than 960,000 people to 125 concerts, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Hendrix Guitar Worth Half A Mill?

The Press Association
reports that the first guitar set alight on stage by rock legend Jimi Hendrix has been sold at auction for £280,000 (approximately $495,000).

Hendrix torched the 1965 Fender Stratocaster at the end of his show at the Astoria in Finsbury Park, north London, in March 1967.

After tense bidding at the Fame Bureau's It's More Than Rock And Roll auction at the Idea Generation Gallery in east London, the guitar was snapped up by American collector Daniel Boucher. He said: "I thought I'd have to pay a little bit more for it, actually. I am going to play it, I hope some of it rubs off on me."

Slash On GNR

VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash recently told New Zealand's 3 News that has GN'R started playing in 1985 out of their love for the music, not because they had any aspirations to become rich and famous.

"Actually the [early] gigs never did pay that well but somehow they managed to... yeah, they paid the rent in one place that we used to squat in," he said. "We actually looked forward to getting paid after a gig, but it was usually for the beer, you know."

He added, "I'd a lot of jobs, at some point there was a little hustling involved as far as like, a little bit of drugs, a little bit of this and that, but prior to that it was just, you know, I kept a straight job for a while."

Slash left GUNS N' ROSES in 1996 after creative differences with lead singer Axl Rose — but he still feels proud that whatever they did, they did it their way.

"Everybody else is making compromises and concessions so that they can make it big and get their, you know, their picture on the cover of Teen Beat or Us Weekly or whatever, you know, so, so...There's a sort of, kind of, selling out to that. But I think what was great about GUNS N' ROSES is that we made it on our own integrity and we didn't give up anything to anybody and made it on our own merit."

Paul Stanley Owns Fan

KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley reportedly had a member of the audience at the band's August 30 concert at Harvey's Casino and Resort in Stateline, Nevada ejected from the venue after the two exchanged words in the middle of KISS' performance. According to one attendee (writing on the Metal Sludge Gossip Board), "Paul got into a verbal/fluid scuffle with a jackass in the front. It's unknown what the guy said or did to Paul, but Paul began spitting at the guy before and during 'I Was Made For Loving You', and after the song, went off on the guy for about five minutes before security removed the non-fan. Paul unleashed an F-bomb tirade, and it involved the guy's mom, his possible low-level job history, his mental-age level, and what the guy likes to put in his mouth. It was GREAT!"

Vivian Campbell Interview

Ilikemusic recently conducted an interview with DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

Ilikemusic: You're coming to the end of a massive global tour with WHITESNAKE. Has touring changed over the years? Do you still enjoy it?

Vivian: "Yeah, I think we still enjoy touring! Though going on tour now is very different to going on tour back in the day — we're not sleeping on guitar amps in the back of a van after playing in bars and coffee shops anymore. We worked really hard and took every opportunity we could. Things have definitely become easier; nowadays, you get into a sort of routine while touring. It's much more comfortable."

Ilikemusic: With over three decades of being in the music business, you're still keeping fans captivated. How do you manage it after so long?

Vivian: "Well, we're certainly an ambitious band. I mean, we have enough of a back catalogue to just play old songs on stage but, as musicians, we always look forward to playing new songs too. New material and energetic stadium shows really help when you're trying to cultivate a whole new set of younger fans."

Ilikemusic: DEF LEPPARD were initially considered the leaders of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. How do you feel about this title?

Vivian: "Well, we never really thought the title fit us. We came out around the same time as bands like IRON MAIDEN, who eventually did claim the status — and they deserved it. DEF LEPPARD were a lot heavier back then but we soon morphed into a hard, stadium rock band, which was a new sub-genre of music at the time."

This is just funny.

Woozyfly.com's metal maniac Buckshot caught up with the members of Miami's BLACK TIDE for a candid conversation while the band was in New York City. As Gabriel, Zakk, Alex and Steven tried their hand at taking on Buckshot at a beer-chugging contest, the guys talked about what it was like being a part of this summer's Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, future touring plans, preparation for their sophomore release, stealing music from Best Buy, their lack of excitement about the new METALLICA album and how they are going to download it off Limewire. Watch the interview below.

BLACK TIDE sold 11,400 copies of its debut album, "Light from Above", in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 73 on The Billboard 200 chart.

"Light from Above" was released on March 18 via Interscope Records. The CD was recorded with producer Johnny K, who has previously worked with DISTURBED, MACHINE HEAD and SOIL, among others.

Aerosmith to Record Next Month

According to the web site of the official AEROSMITH fan club AeroForceOne, AEROSMITH is expected to hit the studio at the end of the month to start working on a new studio album. Singer Steven Tyler stated about what kind of music fans can expect to hear on the record, "Just your usual AEROSMITH. You can't tame it; rocking-out, in-your-face music."

Once the new CD is completed, Tyler revealed that the band is already scheduled to hit the road. "The tour is booked for March or April, I believe it starts, and then we [go through] the States although I think there are some outside gigs but not as much as last year when we did Dubai and India and wound up in Russia," he said.

Tyler checked into a facility in Pasadena, California, in May, prompting speculation he had slipped from sobriety, 20 years after he kicked hard drugs.

The vocalist later revealed he was in rehab on doctor's orders because of a foot injury.

A UK TV commercial for the DVD release of "Chemical Wedding" — the supernatural horror-thriller written by IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson and longtime "Monty Python" editor Julian Doyle, who also directed the film — can be viewed below.

Bruce Dickinson and the crew of "Chemical Wedding" are featured in a behind-the-scenes video talking about the horror film hitting the UK on DVD September 8. Watch the clip below.

According to Variety, Cinema Management Group has closed key deals in major territories on "Chemical Wedding".

Starz/Anchor Bay Entertainment is set to handle distribution in the U.S. and Canada, while Universal Pictures Video will cover France, Belgium and the Netherlands for an early 2009 release.

Dickinson was in Cannes in May to show off "Chemical Wedding". The singer, a registered commercial airline pilot, flew himself to the south of France, along with a bunch of journalists and fans.

Video footage of Dickinson in Cannes promoting the "Chemical Wedding" movie can be seen on the BBC News web site.

Dickinson is not the first rocker to be inspired by Crowley, who died in 1947. LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page was a big collector of Crowley's writings and even bought his Scottish estate. OZZY OSBOURNE, meanwhile, eulogized him in the song "Mr. Crowley".

Airbourne Frontman Interview

MetalSucks
conducted an interview with AIRBOURNE lead singer/guitarist Joel O'Keefe at the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival stop at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York. O'Keefe shared his thoughts about hard partying on the road, being the only hard rock act on an extreme metal tour, and the constant comparisons the band receives to AC/DC. Excerpts from the interview follow:

MetalSucks: So how's the [Rockstar Mayhem] show aspect of the tour going?

O'Keefe: Oh, it's great. For us it's a different crowd. It's predominantly hardcore metal. It's not something you can walk into without getting your head chopped off. We play hard and every band on the bill is definitely out there playing hard. I think that's the common ground that [the other bands are] finding with us. We don't go out there to fuck around. We go out there to play hard. It's go hard or go home. We're from Australia, and to have a soft day on stage and weaken up a bit, you just let a lot of people down, including yourself. You could get turfed out of the country all the way back home again and never come back. So you've got one chance. You're not a cat with nine lives. You've got one chance to make a kill, and you definitely make sure that you fucking kill that thing to death.

MetalSucks: One last question and we'll let you go. We just want to ask you about AC/DC. You guys get compared to them a lot obviously. Does that make you happy? Or do you wish people would let you have your own identity?

O'Keefe: Oh, mate, in this day and age, whoever you are when you come out, especially if you're from Australia and you sound like we do, you're going to get compared to anyone who is out there. It doesn't matter who you are, you are going to get compared to somebody. To be compared to the best rock and roll band in the business, who are still going today and are about to release another album, there is no higher compliment. I could list a thousand bands that I would not want to be compared to. There are a handful that any band does [want to be compared to]. If you get compared to a band like AC/DC or MOTÖRHEAD or ROSE TATTOO or IRON MAIDEN or METALLICA, you can't be doing anything wrong because that's real rock and roll. I think Mick Jagger said it best, "It's only rock and roll but I like it."

Dio Era Boxset Albums to Be Released Individually

According to a posting on the unofficial BLACK SABBATH web site Black-Sabbath.com, the four Ronnie James Dio-era BLACK SABBATH albums that made up the recently released "The Rules of Hell" box set are being re-released individually. "Heaven and Hell", "Mob Rules", "Live Evil" and "Dehumanizer" will be made available separately on October 17 via Rhino. These albums are also being re-released on vinyl.

"The Rules Of Hell" box set sold around 2,650 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"The Rules Of Hell" is a box set featuring all three of BLACK SABBATH's Dio-era studio releases ("Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules", "Dehumanizer") and its double live collection ("Live Evil"), each recently remastered for the first time. "The Rules Of Hell" comes packaged in a deluxe slipcase with extensive liner notes featuring all new interviews with the band.

New Metallica Promo Video

The video for METALLICA's new single, "The Day That Never Comes", can be viewed at Metallica.com. It is also available below. The clip was shot at the end of July in Acton, California (about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles).

METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield told MTV.com that the video isn't making any lofty political statements about the war in Iraq. Instead, it's a statement on humanity, helmed by acclaimed Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, who, along with Lars von Trier, co-founded the Dogme 95 movement in filmmaking. Hetfield said that when he was writing the song's lyrics, he never envisioned the video would look anything like this.

"That's the beauty, I think, of writing vague but powerful lyrics — that someone like a movie director can interpret it in his own way and obviously, someone creative is able to take the metaphors and apply them to whatever he needs in his own life," the frontman explained to MTV.com. "The main [theme of the video] is the human element of forgiveness and someone doing you wrong, you feeling resentment and you being able to see through that in the next situation that might be similar and not take your rage or resentment out on the next person and basically keep spreading the disease of that through life."

He added, "The one thing that I wasn't keen on here was Metallica plugging into a modern war or a current event [that] might be construed as some sort of political statement on our part. There are so many celebrities that soapbox their opinions, and people believe it's more valid because they're popular. For us, people are people — you should all have your own opinion. We are hopefully putting the human element in what is an unfortunate part of life. There are people over there dealing with situations like this, and we're showing the human part of being there.

"It's the forgiveness part — that is key," he continued. "METALLICA has never plugged into any current event visually, but this one is kind of a hotbed. People have very high opinions about this war, and we're trying to cut through all of that. The politics and the religion tend to separate people, and what we're trying to do is bring it together with the common thread of resentment and forgiveness."

METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", is scheduled for release on September 12.

Another Rob Interview

Skylaire Alfvegren of the LA Weekly recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

L.A. Weekly: Rob, how are you?

Rob Halford: I'm fine. Did you survive the earthquake?

L.A. Weekly: I was in Northern California at a UFO convention.

Rob Halford: Oh, for the band?

L.A. Weekly: No, not the band.

Rob Halford: The things in the sky?

L.A. Weekly: The things in the sky.

Rob Halford: Well, I've got some stories to tell you. I've had one or two encounters in England, not close encounters, but things that have totally freaked me out. It absolutely fascinates me. I think maybe just because it's an artistic thing. People that are in tune with their emotions and creativity, I think that a lot of us are prone to that almost sixth-sense phenomenon. Having said that, people from all walks of life see those things in the sky, you know. But I think it's something very bizarre and it's been with humanity forever.

L.A. Weekly: You guys just toured Europe, and now you're headed across North America.

Rob Halford: We're roaring away on the American leg of the world tour. I'm in Kansas City about to get my head together and go and have a sound check for the big show we've got here tonight. We've got a couple of shows on our own before we commence the Metal Masters tour, which will be [full of] legendary moments, and which we're all very, very excited about. I'm like a fan, I just get all excited myself. I can't sleep!

L.A. Weekly: If I were in your position, I'd most want to arm-wrestle Ronnie James Dio.

Rob Halford: I'm obviously a huge fan of everything that Ronnie's done with SABBATH and with Dio and elsewhere, and Lemmy is — I call him Lord Lemmy. Lemmy has just got this character, he's just so strong with his presence onstage, and he's a fantastic bass player and songwriter. MOTÖRHEAD are legendary in their own right. TESTAMENT's been around since 1980-something. I think it's great that we've got this bunch of metal minstrels. I said minstrels because I'm slogging my way through a 700-page book by Kate Mosse called "Labyrinth". [Which fictionalizes the Fourth Crusade, proclaimed against the Cathars, during which the nobility doubled the size of their country.] It's set in 12th-century France. In 11th- and 12th-century France, you know, bands were famous. The courts and courtiers, the nobility, they would book these bands to come and play at their feasts and weddings, and here we're doin' it in 2008!

New Yngwie Album Info Released

Legendary Swedish guitarist YNGWIE MALMSTEEN will release his latest studio album, "Perpetual Flame", on October 14, 2008. The CD will be the first-ever Yngwie effort to be released via Rising Force Records (distributed via Koch) and it will mark the debut of Malmsteen's new singer, ex-JUDAS PRIEST/ICED EARTH frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens.

A supporting tour of the U.S. and Canada is slated to run through all of October.

In addition to the arrival of "Perpetual Flame" in October, another career highlight is slated for that same month — Yngwie will be inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk on Monday, October 13 in Los Angeles. A new Fender/Yngwie Malmsteen custom shop guitar will also be unveiled on November 28 (with a limited run of 100 instruments) and there will be a slew of CD reissues of Yngwie classics to soon be announced.

Rob Halford Interview

David Pehling of KTVU.com recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

KTVU.com: Do you envision setting up somewhere for an extended run where people would come to a theater [to see a full theatrical production of "Nostradamus"], or do you see a tour? Would you expand the musical support of the band as far as recreating the symphonic aspects of the album?

Rob Halford: That's a good question, and I don't have a really solid answer. In my mind, I want to go completely over the f***ing top. I want to throw everything into it including the kitchen sink, personally. I think we've all got different feelings about it, but I just want to see a massive, full-scale theatrical production. Obviously it's all about the music, but I want to see a full chorus. I want to see everyone in costume, stage sets and lights and the whole shebang. I think it can take that. I've seen that type of thing done. I'm not an expert on how to put that together, but that's my dream, speaking as one person in PRIEST. We're all thinking very aggressively about where the final outcome will be. Before that we do want to take it on the road ourselves as a band, because we can play this music live. We're doing it now. That's important. But I see it having a multi-dimensional life.

And as far as the short-attention span, this is no different than going to see "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" or "Spiderman 1", "2" or "3", "Superman Return", "The Dark Knight", whatever. You put your butt down and you just get lost in the experience for two hours or more. If you're a fan of music — and a lot of people are clueless about music. That might not be the right thing to say, but it's a fact. A lot of people have no idea about music, what music is about. They just hear the sounds and that's it. It either grabs you or it doesn't. This is as much an education about music as anything else as far as I'm concerned. I believe our fans are capable of that. We all in PRIEST want to see this leaning over and reaching out into other areas of an audience that wouldn't ordinarily think about JUDAS PRIEST or know of us. I think it's got that potential personally.

KTVU.com: Judging from fan discussions and some of what have been written about the album, "Nostradamus" might be the most polarizing JUDAS PRIEST effort since "Jugulator", when some fans insisted an album without Rob Halford simply wasn't PRIEST. There's a lot of defense and praise as a masterpiece; there are some who can't get past symphonic or keyboard elements and the sheer scope of it. Do you think the audience that has embraced it is big enough to support a large-scale tour focusing on the new material?

Rob Halford: I think that that's all relative to a lot of different things. I mean the album sales have been very strong, so that really supports the fact that when we do come to play it live there will be an audience for it. I think the acceptance and the rejection of what you do musically is great, because that's the passion and the power that music has over your emotions. I think what we're going through in terms of the two sides of the coin is no different than what any other career musician has gone through. That's it. It's in the lap of the gods once you've released it. You have no idea what the feedback or the push back is going to be about.

I think all of us in PRIEST are displaying that determined strength of character again. Regardless of what people think about us or say about us, we don't really care. We just do everything from the heart. We believe in what we do and that's it. Fortunately, we have a really fabulous fan base that knows what we're about and our chemistry. Some PRIEST fans want "British Steel", "British Steel", "British Steel". Some PRIEST fans want "Painkiller", "Painkiller", "Painkiller". And that's just the raw energy and support that you get. That some fans are just focused on one style on display and they couldn't care less about anything else. But they've got that music, so they should be happy and content with it. Having said that, we're always on the lookout and searching to do something different from record to record. As I've said before, it's all about each release having its own legs to stand on. JUDAS PRIEST has really never replicated itself, from "Rocka Rolla" to "Nostradamus".

Get Thrashed: Release Dates

Lightyear Entertainment will release "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" on DVD in the U.S. and Japan on September 16, 2008, in the UK on October 20 and in the rest of Europe on September 26. The film covers the evolution, cultural impact, and musical influence of thrash metal, an extreme form of heavy metal which burst on to the scene in the early-to-mid-1980s. Told first-hand by members of bands such as METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX, as well as using raw, original show footage, writer/director Rick Ernst (MTV, VH1) demonstrates how and why many of these bands emerged from playing local parties and small clubs to headlining major arenas and stadiums. The film is a roller coaster ride of extreme music and personalities, starting with the most famous thrash metal pioneers METALLICA and highlighting other genre defining bands like MEGADETH, SLAYER, EXODUS and more. The documentary features interviews with over 50 artists, including past and current members of METALLICA, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX, SLAYER, PANTERA, EXODUS, LAMB OF GOD, TESTAMENT, SHADOWS FALL, IN FLAMES, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, HATEBREED and many more. The artists discuss the groundbreaking music of the thrash metal scene, the culture surrounding it and includes raw, live concert footage depicting mosh pits, stage diving, head-banging, partying and the over-the-top antics that went along with the thrash metal movement. The movie breaks down how the thrash metal scene grew from its DIY beginnings in Los Angeles and San Francisco, then reached the East Coast, conquered Europe, and even took root in countries like Brazil and Australia. "Get Thrashed" highlights the similarities and differences in each region while illustrating how the seeds that were planted by thrash metal gave rise to the modern day breed of extreme heavy metal and hard rock. The film features wall-to-wall music from METALLICA, MEGADETH, PANTERA, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, EXODUS, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and many more, and contains over 90 minutes of bonus footage, featuring thrash scenes and bands from around the world. The DVD offers more than three hours of content, including director's commentary by Rick Ernst and associate producer Rat Skates (ex-OVERKILL drummer), plus liner notes from legendary EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt.

"Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" has appeared in over 20 film festivals, highlighted by invitations to the prestigious Silver Lake Film Festival (LA), Oldenberg Film Festival (Germany), Athens International Film Festival (Greece) and Raindance Film Festival (London). The film's year-long run on the film festival circuit saw the documentary screen to packed houses and sold-out theaters around the world while picking up awards including Best Documentary (2007 Seattle True Independent Film Festival, Backseat Film Festival, New York International Independent Film & Video Festival), SAFILM Grand Prize Award (2007 San Antonio Underground Film Festival), Best Soundtrack (2007 Backseat Film Festival) and Best Director (NYIIFVF).

Black Ice Review

NEWS.com.au editor David Higgins today heard seven tracks from AC/DC's new album, "Black Ice", in the studios of the band's Sydney headquarters, Albert Music.

According to Higgins, the songs — "Anything Goes", "War Machine", "Stormy May Day", "She Likes Rock 'N' Roll", "Money Made" and "Black Ice", along with the current single "Rock N' Roll Train" — suggest the band has made a remarkable return to form after a series of fan-only albums in recent years.

Judging by these songs, the 15-track album is the band's most consistent and accessible release since "Back in Black".

"Anything Goes" has the potential to be the band's biggest hit since "You Shook Me All Night Long" if released — under one plan — as a second single.

Lars on Dave

The Quietus
conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich earlier this week. An excerpt from the chat follows.

The Quietus: Rumor has it that you and MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine [former METALLICA guitarist] still aren't friends. Do you have a relationship?

Lars: "No. We did the movie ['Some Kind Of Monster', 2005], and as has been well documented, he was not pleased with what came in the movie and what came in the wake of it, and since then we haven't spoken. I'm sure we'll cross paths one day, and usually when we cross paths it's all OK. There's the public relationship and there's the private relationship. People say, 'Kerry King [SLAYER] and METALLICA — whoo!', but whenever I see Kerry King we hug, we laugh, we talk, we embrace. I haven't seen Dave since I filmed that scene in the movie, and I'm sure I'll see him again and maybe it won't be the same — but when did he leave the band, 24 years ago, 25 years ago? Every time I've seen him since then, it's always been, 'Hey, how are you doing? What's going on?' and then there's the shit-talking thing in the press, and then I see him three years later and it's fine again."

The Quietus: All this childish squabbling has been going on for decades. Can't you just call him and say, "Let's stop this now, once and for all?"

Lars: "Yeah, but I gotta tell you, honestly — I don't feel that I'm the instigator. I don't have a problem with him as much as I think he has a problem with me. I've always quite liked the guy. It has a tendency to depend on which mood he's in. If he's in happy-go-lucky mood, then it's 'Lars is OK, ha ha, the little Danish guy, we used to dig holes in the earth and smoke bongs,' or whatever, and if he's in a particular type of mood then it's 'Lars is a fuckin' asshole.' I can't control that, so when people say to me in an interview, 'Dave Mustaine says this and that and that'… I can take on anybody in verbal diarrhea match, but I don't feel the need to. I keep coming back to the statistics, which are interesting: he's never played on a METALLICA record, he was in the band for 10 months, 25 years ago! That's an amazing statistic when you think about it, and still METALLICA is such a prominent part of his existence. That's just mind-blowing, because he has made some of the best heavy metal records of all time. It blows my mind."

Along with Johnson, the classic lineup of GIRLSCHOOL included Kim McAuliffe (guitar), Enid Williams (bass) and Denise Dufort (drums). The band was an integral and major force in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, beginning with the release of its debut album, "Demolition" (1980), and continuing with the follow-up efforts, "Hit 'n' Run" (1981) and "Screaming Blue Murder" (1982).

Death Magnetic Review

Stavros Pamballis of UK's Terrorizer magazine has just had an opportunity to listen to the new METALLICA album "Death Magnetic" in its entirety. His knee-jerk first impressions follow.

"If you could timewarp back to 1983 with a copy of 'Death Magentic' in your hands and play it to the spotty, longhaired brats who'd just finished recording 'Kill 'Em All', they would have no problem at all recognizing themselves in its epic song structures, jaw-dropping guitar work (all buzzsaw guitars and face-melting solos) and sheer whiplash-inducing energy. In fact, they'd probably be impressed.

That's right kids, for once, you can believe the hype: 'Your' METALLICA are back and they've brought their balls with them this time.

"The album is so complex, so riddled with stops, starts, breakdowns and solos that, much like '…And Justice For All' it is virtually impossible to digest in one sitting but a few questions can be answered:

"Is it thrash? Hell yes! At times anyway. Opener 'That Was Your Life' is the heaviest thing they've done since 'Battery' while 'All Nightmare Long' sounds like it was written by SLAYER. On the whole, the album feels like the missing link between '...And Justice For All' and 'The Black Album'. James' vocals, have something to do with this as he rarely uses the low growl of the early days, opting for the higher registers of the Bob Rock days.

"How's the production? Runs rings around 'St Anger', but that's not saying much. Very strong on the whole but the drums are a little too high in the mix and the dynamics suffer as a result. Recalls the Black Album at times but with a hint of 'Reign In Blood'.

"What are the highlights? Almost every song on this album is at the very least interesting. 'Judas Kiss' is an instant, moshpit-firendly classic while 'Unforgiven III' is the album's true epic ballad. Let's just say it blows both of its namesakes out of the water.

"Okay...any negatives then? Lars Ulrich. The guy's limitations are laid bare by the spectacular guitar work on this album.

"So, is it as good as the 'First Four'? Only time will tell... Probably not, but at least it sounds like it belongs to the same back catalogue as those albums. A METALLICA (written the old way) album through and through!"

Napalm Death Finish Drum Tracks For New Album

UK's legendary grindcore masters NAPALM DEATH are currently recording their new album, "Time Waits For No Slave", with producer Russ Russell. Drums have been tracked at Parlour Studios in Kettering and guitars, bass and vocals will be done at Foel Studios in Wales. The band will then return to Parlour for the mixing sessions. Expect the new album to surface in early 2009 via Century Media Records.

NAPALM DEATH bassist Shane Embury recently spoke to Paul Travers of Suite101.com about the band's upcoming thirteenth full-length studio album. "We've got about seventeen songs together," Embury said. "I guess it's moving on again from the last album [2006's 'Smear Campaign']. It's still very fast and hopefully heavy. There's a couple of strange kind of moments in the music, with a little more experimentation and a little more discordance in the guitar perhaps. I think Barney's [Greenway] trying to move forward vocally in some areas like he did on tracks like 'Smear Campaign' and 'Persona Non Grata'."

NAPALM DEATH will only interrupt its studio work for a few select shows in the fall. The details are as follows:

Oct. 03 - Lichtenfels, Germany - WOD Festival
Oct. 31 - Chalon Sur Saone, France - La Peniche
Nov. 01 - Nancy, France - Láutre Canal
Nov. 02 - Vitry Le Francois, France - Orange Bleue
Nov. 22 - Leeds, England - Damnation Festival

David Coverdale Interview

Goldmine contributor Bryan Reesman recently conducted an interview with WHITESNAKE frontman David Coverdale. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

On working with WHITESNAKE guitarist Doug Aldrich:

"After developing a good friendship from touring and hanging out, it was inevitable that we would gravitate towards musical conversation rather than just conversation. It's very similar to my fabulous friendship/relationship/partnership with Adrian Vandenberg. Great pals, and that translated into a very healthy and very creative relationship. You don't need to be aggressively and negatively beating the shit out of each other in order to create good rock music. Otherwise, I'd still be working with some assholes from my past!"

On seeing Jimmy Page after a recent show:

"He said, 'I wish we did more together again.' I said, 'Don't worry.' I was delighted with what we did. It was an honor and privilege to work with one of my heroes, and [who] now is one of my dearest friends, who I love and adore and support."

On his departure from DEEP PURPLE:

“I left PURPLE after the show in Liverpool. It was so f**king embarrassing. I did not want to be part of dragging PURPLE into the mud, the details of which I don't really want to go into right now because it would involve personal critiques of several of the members. The circumstance was I left and was asked to keep it quiet until some of the members had decided what course to pursue. But I was an emotional wreck at the end of it. Drugs had come in in a much more overt way, and it was awful to turn around and see some of the founding members playing with their heads down out of shame. I just went, 'F**k it; I'm out of here.' I just couldn't do it anymore. I didn't want to be part of the demise of the legacy of DEEP PURPLE. DEEP PURPLE was an unbelievably beloved band and still is in Europe."

On his druggie days in PURPLE:

"I had what I would call '1 percent Yorkshire sense.' You'd go, 'Okay, this is the last line for the night.' Then, five minutes later, another one. I didn't dive into it body, mind, and soul as some did, but I certainly did enough to know about it.”

On life lessons he has learned:

"These are impossible questions. The best life lesson I can tell anybody is balance. That's the best thing I can offer. That and a great lawyer and a great accountant. And a great woman in your life. It took me a few tries, but I'm absolutely, utterly blessed with my dear wife. I have it all, babe. I'm the luckiest bastard I know."

Axl Rose Biography

According to New York Post's Page Six, GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose held debauched sex parties at his home — with all female visitors ordered to "get naked or leave." In "Watch You Bleed", Stephen Davis' new bio of the California rockers, Rose recalls, "There was a lot of indoor and outdoor sex . . . People would show up at all hours and we'd talk the girls into climbing into our loft, and somebody would hit the light and go, 'All right! . . . Get naked or leave!' This one girl, she [bleep]ed almost the whole band, friends of the band, and the band next door. Two days later, she comes back and goes, 'Axl, I'm having your child.'"

Ripper Replies to Rob

Former JUDAS PRIEST singer Tim "Ripper" Owens has commented on Rob Halford's assertion that "a straight man" can't do Halford's job in the legendary British heavy metal band.

In a recent interview with The Dallas Morning News, Halford — who revealed he was homosexual during a 1998 appearance on MTV — explained why he believes that he's the only man capable of fronting JUDAS PRIEST. "To be brutally honest, 'Jugulator' and 'Demolition' [the two PRIEST albums made with Owens as frontman] were affected by my not being in the band, much like when Bruce Dickinson went away from IRON MAIDEN, the way VAN HALEN [was] affected when David Lee Roth left," Rob is quoted as saying. "But I don't think a straight man can do my job in JUDAS PRIEST. I've never said that before. I'm sorry, but they can't."

After reading Rob's remarks on Friday (August 22), Owens — who replaced Halford as PRIEST's frontman in 1996 — told BLABBERMOUTH.NET in an e-mail, "HAHAHAHAHAHA... Rob can be a funny dude! I feel like I did a good job in PRIEST and I'm straight! But Rob is a friend and the guys in PRIEST are all friends of mine! So, really, I will leave it at that.... But, man, that was a pretty funny comment. [It] had to be taken out of context or the question [was] just asked in a strange way, 'cause Rob would not just say that... I'm still laughing though. That just brightened up my day!"

The latest issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine (web site) includes an interview with METALLICA and report on the band's July 27, 2008 concert in Istanbul, Turkey. A couple of excerpts from the interview portion of the article follow.

On staying relevant more than 25 years after the band's formation:

James Hetfield (guitar, vocals): "Despite the earthquake that is going on in the record industry, this band is still relevant. We worked through our problems and now we've gone to work capturing our musical essence. We've challenged ourselves; we're hungry."

"We understand the importance of staying relevant. We understand the importance of playing new songs. We understand how important it is not to become a nostalgia act. No one in the band wants us to be that. [METALLICA] still has something to offer. No matter what the public thinks, as a band we will do what we have to do. We always have."

On METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic":

Lars Ulrich (drums): "I can honestly say that this album is the best album we could possibly have made. Can I guarantee that people will like it as much as they like our older albums? No, I can't; I can't offer any guarantees. But I promise you that we could not have made a better album."

Kirk Hammett (guitar): "This album is some of the best music we've made in the past 15 years. A lot of the albums we made post-'Black' album were us trying to get away from a perceived METALLICA sound. That was the right thing for us at the time, but we don't feel we haveto do that anymore. And to be truthful, it's fun to play fast, to be heavy. We're now all on the same page with regards to that. I'd even go so far as to say that we even missed playing that way."

James Hetfield: "This album has a hunger and a youthfulness about it. We had a new producer, a new bass player… and we worked really hard to get it right. So when you ask me if it is good, if it's really good, I can honestly say, 'Yes, it is!'"

Kirk Hammett: "I think we're all aware of the danger of becoming a band that exists in the past. I think any band that's been around as long as we have has to face that. But ['Death Magnetic'] is going to prove to people that we never lost our ability to make an album like this. We just chose not to. And I'll stand by those words."

New Randy Rhoads Sculpter

KnuckleBonz has created a second sculpture of late guitarist legend Randy Rhoads (OZZY OSBOURNE, QUIET RIOT) in association with the Randy Rhoads estate. The figure is sculpted and hand-painted and available only in a very limited edition of 3,000 worldwide. Each is hand-numbered and has a certificate of authenticity on the base of the sculpture.

The Randy Rhoads II figure is officially licensed through the Randy Rhoads Charitible Trust. The sculpture has already been completed and approved by the family and KnuckleBonz is in the paint-production phase now. A fall release is expected.

A number of photos taken at Randy Rhoads's gravesite at the Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino, CA on March 19, 2007 to mark the 25th anniversary of Randy's passing have been posted online at this location.

With the blessings of the family of Randy Rhoads, Dakota Pictures and director Peter Margolis began filming the "Randy Rhoads Documentary" last year at the Mountain View Cemetery. In hopes to fully capture the significance of the 25th anniversary of Randy's passing, the filmmakers interviewed as many of Randy's fans as possible.

In 1982, Rhoads, the then-lead guitarist for OZZY OSBOURNE, and two others were killed at Flying Baron Estates, just outside Leesburg, Florida, when their small plane struck Osbourne's tour bus, then crashed into a mansion.

Take a look!

Did METALLICA take inspiration from the Swedish industrial goth metal band DEATHSTARS for its new album? According to a posting on the DEATHSTARS' web site, METALLICA used the same font as the DEATHSTARS logo for the title of its new CD, "Death Magnetic", and one of the tracks on "Death Magnetic" is named "Cyanide", which also happens to be the title of the first single from DEATHSTARS' latest album, 2006's "Termination Bliss".

Commented DEATHSTARS vocalist Andreas "Whiplasher Bernadotte" Bergh: "It's just fun. What can I say?!! It's just as big of a coincidence and chance as if you get a hermaphrodite child. What can you do? You just need to smile at the little monster."

Guitarist Emil "Nightmare Industries" Nödtveidt added, "It's interesting to see how a band that made a name for themselves hating Napster and downloading practically downloads ideas from a younger and sexier band, but think positively — maybe METALLICA does something that we can steal later."

In a recent interview with Lucem Fero, Bergh stated about the group's upcoming third album, "Deathglam", "It'll just continue with the deathglam that we play. In terms of this new album's style, I think it's more DEATHSTARS than ever. . . We're digging deeper and deeper into the impression that we began with 'Synthetic Generation', and we're achieving more and more freedom. We're breaking more and more away from metal and things like, which is all we just played before. It makes 'Deathglam' interesting."

ACDC 30 Second Sample

A 30-second preview of the new AC/DC single, "Rock 'N Roll Train", has been posted on the band's official MySpace page.

As previously reported, Spanish-language AC/DC fan site AC/DC Blog de Noticias has posted several photos from the video shoot for "Rock 'N Roll Train", which took place on Friday, August 15 in London, England. The song will be the first taste of the band's new "Black Ice" album, due in October.

According to Undercover News, one fan at the shoot said in an online posting, the song "has a heavy driving drumbeat with bass being loud n hard to me. It sounded like a cross between 'Hard As A Rock' and 'All Screwed Up'."

The fans were told to jump and wave their arms while they were filmed for the chorus of the song which goes "Runaway train, running off the track."

The set looked something like "Terminator" with big cogs turning and flaming flying out.

A detailed report on the "Rock 'N Roll Train" video shoot can be found on the Metal Hammer web site.

"Black Ice" will be released on October 20 via Columbia Records. The CD features 15 new tracks from brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd. The album was recorded in Vancouver in just eight weeks with producer Brendan O'Brien, who has previously worked with PEARL JAM, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and VELVET REVOLVER, among others.

"Black Ice" will be sold in the U.S. exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club retail locations at the special price of $11.88. Online, the CD will be available with free shipping and handling via the band's web site, www.acdc.com. It will also be sold at Walmart.com and Samsclub.com.

As one of America's largest music retailers, Wal-Mart will join with Columbia Records to launch multiple activities for fans in celebration of the new CD album, including new product features and promotions to come this fall that will bring fans closer to one of history's greatest rock bands.

"No Bull: The Director's Cut", a newly edited, comprehensive DVD and of the band's famed July 1996 Plaza De Toros De Las Ventas concert in Madrid, Spain, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray September 9, 2008.

"Black Ice" is AC/DC's first new studio effort since 2000's "Stiff Upper Lip".

The legendary rockers are slated to begin an 18-month world tour in October, with the trek reportedly kicking off on around Halloween in Chicago.

"Black Ice" track listing:

01. Rock 'N Roll Train
02. Skies On Fire
03. Big Jack
04. Anything Goes
05. War Machine
06. Smash 'N Grab
07. Spoilin' For A Fight

Rob Halford Interview

Mike Daniel of The Dallas Morning News recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

On how he believes that he's the only man capable of fronting JUDAS PRIEST:

"To be brutally honest, 'Jugulator' and 'Demolition' [the two PRIEST albums made with Tim 'Ripper' Owens as frontman] were affected by my not being in the band, much like when Bruce Dickinson went away from IRON MAIDEN, the way VAN HALEN [was] affected when David Lee Roth left. But I don't think a straight man can do my job in JUDAS PRIEST. I've never said that before. I'm sorry, but they can't."

On "Nostradamus" being a drastic shift that sounds like no other PRIEST record:

"We don't replicate ourselves. If you want 'British Steel', go and play it; if you want 'Painkiller', go and play it. We don't want to keep making the same thing over and over again, with a different song title and different words. What's the point? I've always felt that if you wanted to compare us to anybody, compare us to QUEEN ... God what a band that was. They were so heavy. I see a lot of that in PRIEST."

On upcoming world tour that will focus on "Nostradamus":

"I want to go over the top with all of it, but that's me. I love to go onto the stage with the big set and costumes and lights. We all do that in the band, but I know what my role is, and I love to get lost in that theatrical, flamboyant style. That's what makes me click as a metal guy. I could see Cirque du Soleil doing it, I can see Broadway doing it, I can see a movie with Johnny Depp playing Nostradamus doing it, I can see a full classical opera interpretation, I can see a full symphonic classical presentation. I see everything in this record."

New Metallica Single

METALLICA's new single, "The Day That Never Comes", is available for streaming right now:

Windows Media
Real Media
MySpace

You can also listen to the track below.

A five-minute video clip containing behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot for "The Day That Never Comes", which took place last month in Acton, California (about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles), can be viewed below (bottom clip).

METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield told MTV.com that the clip won't be making any lofty political statements about the war in Iraq.

METALLICA debuted a new song called "Cyanide" during its headlining set on August 9 at Ozzfest, which took place at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. This marked the first time that the band has performed any material in concert from "Death Magnetic". The rest of METALLICA's 17-song Ozzfest set featured a number of the band's classic tunes as well as a medley of songs from underground metal act MERCYFUL FATE, for which they were joined onstage by that Danish act's singer, King Diamond.

ACDC!

Columbia Records has set an October 20 release date for AC/DC's widely anticipated "Black Ice", the band's first studio album in eight years. As one of America's largest music retailers, Wal-Mart will join with Columbia Records to launch multiple activities for fans in celebration of the new CD album, including new product features and promotions to come this fall that will bring fans closer to one of history's greatest rock bands.

"Like all excited fans of AC/DC, we can hardly wait for the launch of this album and all that will surround it," said Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's senior vice president of Entertainment. "We promise there will be a multitude of opportunities for fans of all ages to get involved and 'rock again' as we count down to October 20."

Testament Guitarist Interview

Scott Tady of TimesOnline.com recently conducted an interview with TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

TimesOnline.com: What's been the highlight or craziest moment of the ["Metal Masters Tour" with HEAVEN AND HELL, MOTÖRHEAD and JUDAS PRIEST]?

Alex: The best part of it happens almost every night when my friends come to the show, and together, with my all-access pass, we get to go front row for BLACK SABBATH and JUDAS PRIEST. I love meeting up with my friends and watching some of the best bands of all time. There have been a couple nights where I've been front row and (JUDAS PRIEST's) Glenn Tipton has noticed me and made faces at me. My friends congratulated me because I got props from Glenn.

TimesOnline.com: Congratulations on a strong new album, one that might ultimately be TESTAMENT's most successful. Why do you suppose "The Formation of Damnation" was your highest-charting album, here, nearly 25 years into the band's career?

Alex: I think there are a number of reasons. One is that when the original lineup got back together, we didn't think about doing a record until it felt right. Despite cries from certain sections of the fans and media to hurry up and do a record, we just took our time. When we ended up doing it, we meant business. I don't think we wanted to do one until we were in that place. I think that there was also a need for a good classic metal record that also felt current.

TimesOnline.com: A hardball question on behalf of people weaned on pure '80s metal: Which has hurt heavy-metal more, POISON, CINDERELLA and the other "hair-metal" bands; or today's guttural, Cookie Monster-voiced death metal bands?

Alex: Ha ha, it's hard to say. I would say neither because that's a general stereotype. There are bands from both genres that are good, and there are bands that are bad. Occasionally the bad ones get all the attention, and it can hurt the overall impact and image of metal in general.

New Queen Album Pushed Back

The North American release date of QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS's new album, "The Cosmos Rocks", has been pushed back to October 28 from the previously announced October 14. The CD will still arrive in Europe on September 15 via EMI/Parlophone.

"The Cosmos Rocks" was recorded and mixed at QUEEN drummer Roger Taylor's The Priory studio between November 2007 and August 2008, and co-produced and engineered by Joshua J Macrae, Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Fredriksson. It marks the first album of newly recorded material from QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS since they first set out on the road in 2005, and the first QUEEN studio album since 1995.

A first single from the album, "C-lebrity", will be released September 8 in enhanced CD, 7", and digital formats. Versions contain exclusive performances of QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS live performances of "Show Must Go On" and "Fire and Water" filmed during Q + PR's 2005 Japanese tour.

The track, according to Roger Taylor — and seemingly much in keeping with many on "The Cosmos Rocks" — is the writers' skew on the times in which we live: "'C-lebrity' is really a comment on the current concept of fame — success and all that goes with it. Getting your face on TV is enough — talent doesn't really enter into the equation. 'Celebrity' is an overused and devalued word today. I think the song shows we have lost none of the humour ofQUEEN!"

The album is released in three physical formats: standard CD, deluxe package which includes additional DVD featuring 15 highlight performances by QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS from the band's Super Live in Japan concert recorded live at Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo on October 27, 2005, along with double gatefold vinyl release. The album will also have a special digital release including bonus tracks.

Coinciding with the release of "The Cosmos Rocks", QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS embark on a 33-date Europe and Northern Eurasia tour beginning mid-September. The tour reaches the UK on October 10 with 11 dates including two at London 02 and the tour's final date at Wembley Arena on November 8.

"The Cosmos Rocks" track listing:

01. Cosmos Rockin'
02. Time To Shine
03. Still Burnin'
04. Small
05. Warboys
06. We Believe
07. Call Me
08. Voodoo
09. Some Things That Glitter
10. C-lebrity
11. Through The Night
12. Say It's Not True
13. Surf's Up . . . School's Out!
14. (small reprise)

A special edition CD/DVD featuring a bonus disc containing a recording of QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS at Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo on October 27, 2005 will also be made available.

The DVD track listing is as follows:

01. Reaching Out (Hill / Black)
02. Tie Your Mother Down (May)
03. Fat Bottomed Girls (May)
04. Another One Bites The Dust (Deacon)
05. Fire And Water (Rodgers / Fraser)
06. Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Mercury)
07. Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together) (May)
08. These Are The Days Of Our Lives (Queen)
09. Radio Ga Ga (Taylor)
10. Can't Get Enough (Ralphs)
11. I Was Born To Love You (Mercury)
12. All Right Now (Rodgers / Fraser)
13. We Will Rock You (May)
14. We Are The Champions (Mercury)
15. God Save The Queen (Trad. Arr. May)

QUEEN's last studio album was "Made In Heaven", released in November 1995 and containing the last recordings with Freddie. The LP became the band's biggest selling studio album, with world sales in excess of 20 million.

Peter Criss Interview

40° 74° magazine has published a new interview with original KISS drummer Peter Criss and his wife Gigi about their life in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

"That was it for me," Criss said of his decision to leave KISS for the last time in 2003. "That was like: Ace [Frehley, guitar] ain't here. This ain't the original band. I said to Gigi, 'I can't do this with these guys. I made this band what it is. I'm one of the founding fathers. No matter who they get to put stuff on their face, it ain't us. You can take the mask off the Lone Ranger and put it on someone else, but it ain't the Lone Ranger.' We ended it on my 58th birthday, which couldn't have been more apropos."

Regarding his home in Spring Lake, New Jersey, Criss said, "The year before we got married, I came out here for Christmas. I hadn't had a Christmas with snow for eons. I really missed it in California. We were dating then. I was taking the garbage down. There were all these deer surrounding the garbage area. They were beautiful, man. I just love deer anyway. Some people can shoot them. I don't get that.

"Something happened an epiphany, call it what you want. But I just felt God said, 'You're gonna marry this girl, and you're gonna live here.'

"I said (to Gigi), 'Go find a house. Buy it. Make sure it’s got a pool, a lot of privacy and land.' Gigi looked at a bunch of places. I came here. We named the house Harmony. I fell in love with it. I've got land, I have privacy, I have my studio downstairs, I have a pool. I have all the great things a kid from Brooklyn — trust me — never had. What more do you really want in life?

"I find here and now is a great place for Peter Criss. I love it here. It's paradise."

Alice Cooper Interview

Steven Patrick of Uweekly.com recently conducted an interview with rock legend Alice Cooper. An excerpt from the chat follows.

Uweekly.com: Would you agree that "Along Came A Spider" is a "return-to-form" album for you?

Alice: I really kind of do my albums for my fans. I realize I'm not breaking any new ground out there. I don't think OZZY is, or AEROSMITH is, either. We have our fans. We've had them for a long time. We are getting new fans because kids that like MARILYN MANSON immediately go, "Who's this ALICE COOPER that they're always talking about?" Then they bring up my website on the Internet and go, "Wait a minute…I like this guy even better…and he's got 25 albums out!" So, they rediscover me…but honestly, when I do an album, I'm not thinking about, "Boy, I really got to get the FOO FIGHTERS' audience." [laughs] I'm thinking that I've got to satisfy my audience. I spent more time in the production of this one, and I think that's what they mean by going "back to form." It probably reminds them more of "Welcome to My Nightmare", and that's fine because when we do this production on stage next year, it will be like "Welcome to My Nightmare". It will be a full-out Alice production. The album is already doing great. It's charting great, it's selling great, pre-orders are amazing. It's already surpassed in one week all the other albums combined. I must have found something in here that works.

Uweekly.com: So much of your work deals with teenage angst and rebellion; how do you still tap into that at age 60?

Alice: Well, the good thing about it is that I don't. Alice does. I don't know how old Alice is. When he's doing "Eighteen" he's 18. When he's doing "School's Out" he's 15, 16, 17 years old, I guess. You know, because, how old is Dracula? How old is Batman? How old is any fictitious character? They really don't have an age. You know, so when I'm on stage and I'm doing "Eighteen", believe me, I'm as 18 as any kid out there that's 18…maybe more. When I get offstage, of course I go, "Well, I can't say you're 18"…you know, Alice has got to be 18. Then there are other times when Alice needs to be a hundred. You know, he needs to be coming out of a crypt somewhere, so I kind of adapt him to whatever I need him to be.

METALLICA has officially set Friday, September 12 as the "worldwide" release date for "Death Magnetic". The CD will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same day the album arrives in stores.

The band is offering the record for sale in numerous configurations, ranging from a digital-only release to a deluxe "coffin box" that will come with a bonus CD, a DVD, a T-shirt, guitar picks and other goodies.

Although Dallas was the only Ozzfest date scheduled for this year, METALLICA's name has come up a lot in recent years as a possible headliner or co-headliner. Drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio he was happy that METALLICA was finally doing it. "I don't think we've ever been invited before," he said. "You know, I've gone to a couple of Ozzfests. I think it's been awesome. I mean, it's such a great institution and it's done so much for metal in America. Ozzy and Sharon gave us our first big break in America in 1986. I will always respect that. They've been great to us. So it's cool. I'm psyched. Should be good fun."

METALLICA toured as an opening act for Ozzy in 1986 while supporting its breakthrough album, "Master of Puppets".

Ozzfest began in 1996 as a single show held in Los Angeles, but expanded to a full summer tour for the past 11 years, including last year's "free" event. Both Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have indicated that it will be a full-blown tour again next year.

Appetite For Vinyl

Universal Music will re-release GUNS N' ROSES' classic debut album "Appetite For Destruction" on vinyl. The LP is due on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 and the cover features the controversial original artwork by Robert Williams.

Go to CD Universe to place your order today and be one of the first to receive this product when it arrives.

Product Description: Already a legend in its own meagre lifetime, this startling debut shrouded itself in controversy, from its original Robert Williams artwork to Axl Rose's unblinking accounts of L.A.'s underbelly. This mawkish storytelling, combined with a brattish collective swagger and a surprisingly mature approach to their songs, guaranteed GUNS N' ROSES a speedy notoriety that was to serve their legend brilliantly. From the laconic "Paradise City" to the achingly beautiful "Sweet Child O' Mine", or the furious "Welcome To The Jungle", the record brims with a brutal integrity. An album they could never surpass even if they had stayed together.

120-gram vinyl LP pressing of their genre-defining debut full-length album, originally released in 1987. The LP cover features the controversial original artwork. **Please note that this vinyl pressing features "For Promotional Use Only" printed on the artwork. 2007

German edition in its original sleeve design.

Recorded at Rumbo Studios, Canoga Park, California; Take One Studio, Burbank, California; Can Am Studio, Tarzana, California.

Deluxe Edition Of Paranoid

The Pulse of Radio reports that BLACK SABBATH's 1970 second album, "Paranoid", will be reissued on September 29 as both a double-vinyl set and a deluxe three-CD package, according to a press release. The record, which was recorded in eight days, is SABBATH's best-selling effort and was their commercial breakthrough in the U.S. Containing some of the band's biggest songs, such as "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, "Paranoid"is considered one of heavy metal's most influential and all-time masterpieces. The CD set will contain the original album on one disc and a 1974 quadraphonic mix on the second, while a third CD will feature never-before-released early instrumental versions of six of the album's eight songs and two with alternate lyrics.

"Paranoid" has sold four million copies in the U.S. and was SABBATH's only album to ever reach No. 1 in their native country, the U.K.

"Paranoid" was followed by 1971's "Master of Reality", also considered by many fans to be one of the group's finest efforts.

At their long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, guitarist Tony Iommi and singer Ozzy Osbourne talked about the respect that BLACK SABBATH has earned in the music industry.

Iommi: "I think it's great. I think it's taken a few years, mind (you), because I think for a while, nobody took us seriously. But, you know, our friends in the music business and that obviously did. As we went on, the more we carried on, the more we proved, the more we stayed there, you know? And I think we got the respect from that."

Osbourne: "I never thought anybody liked us, and people on the Ozzfest would come to me and go, 'You were really one of our inspirations.'And I didn't really, I didn't believe it, you know?"

The original lineup of BLACK SABBATH has reunited several times in the last decade to either headline its own tour or Ozzfest, but there are no plans at the moment for the band to either record or tour.

Are You Experienced?

Experience Hendrix is the continuing concert phenomenon that brings together contemporary guitar greats to celebrate the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. It is also the title of the first-ever DVD release that chronicles blazing concert performances by top name artists in tribute to Jimi Hendrix. "Experience Hendrix", released through Image Entertainment this month, features highlights of two star-studded concerts featuring such notables as Kenny Wayne Shepherd, DOUBLE TROUBLE, LIVING COLOR, PEARL JAM's Mike McCready, Indigenous, Robert Randolph, Mick Taylor, Kenny Olson of Kid Rock's band, Hubert Sumlin, BAD COMPANY's Paul Rodgers, Buddy Guy, Mitch Mitchell, Buddy Miles, Billy Cox and others.

Fourteen of the performances seen in "Experience Hendrix" were filmed at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, Jimi Hendrix's hometown. Three bonus songs were filmed at San Diego's annual Street Scene.

The connection between the participating artists and the legacy of Jimi Hendrix is undeniably direct. According to Kenny Wayne Shepherd, "Without the music of Jimi Hendrix
, I might never have been so inspired to explore the music possibilities and push the envelope of the guitar."

Billy Cox, the bassist who met Jimi Hendrix in the U.S. Army and performed and recorded with Hendrix with both the JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE and THE BAND OF GYPSYS, stated, "It's a thrill for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now as it was in the past. The Experience Hendrix shows illustrate just you how timeless this music really is."

The Experience Hendrix cast includes musicians who performed or recorded with Hendrix during his lifetime including the aforementioned Cox as well as original JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE drummer Mitch Mitchell and the late Buddy Miles who was, with Cox, the rhythm section of THE BAND OF GYPSYS.

Produced by Janie Hendrix and John McDermott for Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-run company charged with preserving the legacy of Jimi Hendrix, the DVD was mixed by Eddie Kramer. Kramer, one of history's most lauded recording engineers was a long-time associate of Jimi Hendrix's who worked on every one of his albums from "Are You Experienced?" onward as well as numerous live recordings, including Woodstock. Kramer mixed portions of the "Experience Hendrix" DVD at Electric Lady Studios, the Greenwich Village recording studio he helped construct for Hendrix in 1969.

Janie Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix, LLC commented, "Every day, we see how Jimi's musical legacy continues to transcend generational and cultural boundaries. This DVD release reflects the genius of his unifying spirit."

Hey JayDee.  Just FYI, if you read my story on the Sinful thread I mentioned that we had dinner in the HR cafe and they had did have some Judas Priest stuff.  I will be posting pictures later including what was in the HR.  I'm sure they just put them up because they were playing but I've been there before and I've never seen any Priest stuff.

I've been to many HR Cafes around the world collecting guitar pins. What I found ironic about the whole Hard Rock Cafe thing is I've never seen a single piece of Judas Priest memorbilia in any of them! No pictures, guitars, gold/platinum records nothing!  Maybe NY HR is different but I will tell all of you as a whole, JP, the greatest heavy metal band of all time has been left 'out in the cold', pun intended when it comes to the HR Cafe.

Interesting note: There's a HR Cafe in Tijuana, Mexico and no music ever came out of Tj. However Seattle, WA. my city and host to- peal jam, nirvana, queensryche, hendrix, hart, soundgarden, alice n chains...etc..... has no HR Cafe.......WTF?    go figure!

Here is a recap from Eddie Trunk about his 25th Anniversary show this past Monday Night at the Hard Rock Cafe which I had the pleasure of attending!

05-Aug-08
What a night, a recap of the 25th Anniversary event.

8/5/08: Wow, where to begin? Last night really was one of the most special nights of my professional life. After a couple months of anticipation, the 25th Anniversary event is in the books, and what a night it was. Never in a million years could I ever have imagined a day would come that Judas Priest would be playing a private show for me, and that's exactly what has happened. The day started for me with a limo ride into NYC. With me in the car were my Mom and Dad and my good friend Mike Piazza. As we came through Times Square I saw the marquee of the Hard Rock with my name and a congratulations message and it really hit that this was actually happening. Amazing feeling. We entered the back of the Hard Rock where I had a quick look at Priest's stage set up before doors open. Johnny then took me to the red carpet reception area where there was a huge banner with my logo on it. Once the doors opened it was all a blur. Fans, friends and artists came streaming in and I had a chance to greet many of them. It was a scene I could have never imagined as about 20 photographers snapped away at me and my guests that walked the red carpet. Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson handled video interviews with many of the artists as well. Everything, including Priest's set, was filmed professionally with a 4 camera shoot. After about an hour reception out front I was taken to the backstage area where the surprise of the night took place. Many of my close friends in the world of comedy were standing there, as was Piazza, so I knew something was up! When Don, Jim, Craig Gass, Jim Breuer, Billy Mira and Jim Norton are in a group you know things are about to get stupid! I was standing backstage so I really could not hear or see what they all did, but I'm sure it was funny. Then Piazza came out and introed me to the crowd after saying a few words. Then the surprise; a huge video screen comes down and what was essentially an Eddie Trunk roast took place! An entire video tribute was put together by my good friend Erik Luftglass over the last few months and I had no idea! This video will be posted on this site soon, so you can all see it. It featured Chris Jericho, Don & Jim, UFO, Tesla, Ratt, Sabbath, Dio, Kip Winger, Trixter, David Ellefson, Judas Priest, Triumph, Anthrax, Twisted Sister, Bret Michaels, Queensryche, Dream Theater and many others first taking shots at me in a roast style, then all saying some really amazing things about how they feel about me and congratulating me on the 25 years. Just awesome and I will keep this video as a great memory for life. I can not thank Erik enough for spending hours getting these interviews and putting it all together. It was an awesome surprise and there were also some Happy Birthday wishes thrown in (mine is 8/8). JJ and Eddie from Twisted Sister gave me a gift of a guitar signed by the entire band, and the Hard Rock gave me a guitar and amp signed by everyone at the event. After the video I took some time to say a few words to the crowd and thank some of the people who have supported me over the last 25 years. Then the main event, Judas Priest on stage in a club in front of 600 people! The stage was cleared and Priest took over and crushed! AMAZING seeing this band in this setting. Even more interesting was to see the guys perform out of stage clothes, in jeans and T shirts, really cool to see them loose and having fun. The guys would tell me later they had a great time being that close to a crowd and there was great energy on stage and in the audience. Priest played for about 45 minutes and did a set with an equal balance of album cuts and hits. I had no idea what they were going to play and didn't want to know in advance. They opened with "Electric Eye" into "Metal Gods". How can you top that!?!? Then "Devils Child", INSANE! From there it was "Breaking The Law", "Hell Patrol", "Green Manalishi" and "Another Thing Coming". The band was called back out for an encore and slammed into "Hell Bent For Leather". Halford thanked me several times during the set and called me up to the stage just before the last song of the regular set "Another Thing Coming". There I was standing on stage with Priest, unreal. Halford gave me the mic and had me trade off his signature audience call and response before the song. Then Glen Tipton came over and offered me his guitar in a gesture to play with them! I had to decline since I don't know how to play a note, but damn I wish I did!!! Between the guitars as gifts and the chance to jam with Priest, it might be time to take lessons. The band just killed. They played great and Rob sang unreal hitting every high note. If you were lucky enough to be there you saw something really special. Legends in a club setting at a private show. After the show I once again thanked the band and fans and did my best to make the rounds and see some friends. The whole thing almost felt like a wedding for me in that there is all this build up, and then it went by in a flash and there were so many people you wanted to talk to but missed. After the show I hung out with Priest and many guests backstage. The band could not have been cooler and the vibes were great all around. One funny moment nobody knows about is that my good friend Ace Frehley was there, but missed everything! I had called Ace several times warning him not to be late. He walked in around 10PM and saw me on stage and walked right backstage thinking I was bringing Priest on. As I walked off from thanking everyone Ace was standing at the bottom of the stage stairs, said hi, and asked when Priest was starting. He thought I was bringing them on and he was bummed when I explained the night had ended and he missed them. He did hang for a bit backstage then split. Classic Ace! I thank him still for showing up and lending his support, but he missed everything. Off the top of my head here are a few of the artists that joined me in my celebration. I'm sure I'm forgetting some and much more will come to me, but in the house from what I can remember were; Mike Piazza, Ace Frehley, Don Jamieson, Craig Gass, Jim Norton, Jim Breuer, Jim Florentine, Richard Christy, Bumblefoot, Mike Portnoy, Scott Rockenfield, Geoff Tate, Glenn Hughes, Tony Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, Vinnie Appice, Carmine Appice, David Ellefson, Gilby Clarke, Frank Bello, Dan Nelson, Russell Allen, Vito Bratta, Jesse Malin, Danny Sage, Johnny Kelly, Bobby Blitz Ellsworth, Kenny Dubman, Scott Metaxes, Russell Arcara and I'm sure others I am forgetting that will come to me. I didn't even get to see everyone, but most I had a quick hello with, it was pretty crazy. It was so great to have so many of my close friends there. A TON of photos, video and more are all coming exclusively to this site. Keep checking back as stuff will start being added daily. My SINCERE thanks to John Pasquale, Dave Miller and everyone at the Hard Rock Cafe NYC. Great people, great venue and I can't thank them enough for providing me a perfect place to do great events in the heart of the greatest city in the world! Thanks to Erik Luftglass, so much support and the video was incredible. Erik and I have worked together on various levels over the years and he always is in my corner. He now works for my website and is a big reason for the upgrades among other things. Speaking of the site, thanks to Rich and Keith and all at PAID. Thank you JUDAS PRIEST! I will forever be in their debt for what they have done for me. To have a band of this stature offer to do this for free, with no ego or bullshit, and to acknowledge what I have done like they did is amazing. Thank you Glen, KK, Rob, Scott and Ian. Also thanks to Jayne Andrews and Priest management for making this a reality. Thanks to our sponsor Legends Harley in Ledgewood NJ. None of this could have happened without the people I just mentioned. Also thank to Punctual Pickups for providing first class transportation. If your looking for great car service at a great price, and a company that gets the rock and roll lifestyle, call them at 201-569-6376. I also want to thank all the PR firms that helped including Coyne PR, Kayos Productiosn, Adrenaline PR, and Chipster PR. A sincere thanks to all the program directors who believed in what I do and have kept me on air for 25 years. Special thanks to Bob Buchmann at my current NYC home Q104.3. Bob rescued my show in NYC back in 2002 and put it on Q where it still lives. Bob is leaving the station and I wish him well and thank him for truly getting what I'm about and letting me be me. Thanks to all the amazing artists over the years, many who have become great friends. Its a two way street, they support me, I support them, and when it works like that its awesome and I appreciate it. Also thanks to VH1, VH1 Classic and MSG Network. I appreciate all that have given me opportunities in TV. Great to be a part of MSG Network and great to be coming back to VH1 Classic. Also thanks to my family. My wife who deals with all the crazy stuff in my schedule and life with no drama, and my parents who took me to my first Priest show and were both at the event Monday. Kind of sureal to see my Mom and Dad rocking to Priest, and then to see them in the bands dressing room after the show before I even got there talking to the guys! Also thanks to Chris, Michelle and Cathy at The Aquarian for the awesome cover story which you can link to from my home page. My current assistants on the radio shows Andrew Ramsingh and Holly Lucian, and all that were there before them. Also thanks to Dana Rosen and all that contribute to make this site what it is. Most of all thanks to YOU! I would be NOTHING without the amazing support of my audience. I thank you all greatly. So much more to talk abouit, so much video and photos coming. We will also cover everything on air this weekend on the radio. I'll also see you at PNC and Jones Beach this weekend for the full Metal Masters Tour. After the little taste of Priest last night, can not wait for the full assault! Thanks to all for an amazing night. Everyone that was there has been raving about how special it was. I hope I can do it another 25!

Trunk broadcasts his weekly radio shows, "Friday Night Rocks" on Q104.3 in the New York City listening area and "Eddie Trunk Live" on XM Radio (satellite radio).

Eddie said, "I've had the privilege of meeting and/or interviewing most of the top metal and hard rock artists at various points in my career and sharing their stories and music with millions of fans on air through TV and radio. To have an iconic band like JUDAS PRIEST, who helped invent the genre and are true legends, play a private show to celebrate my contributions and support is humbling, to say the least! It would be tough to find another band that defines metal like PRIEST, so this is an honor beyond belief and one I can truly say I would have never dreamed of as a kid!"

Vinny Appice Interview

Marko Syrjälä of Metal-Rules.com recently conducted an interview with drummer Vinny Appice (BLACK SABBATH, DIO, HEAVEN AND HELL, DERRINGER). An excerpt from the chat follows:

Metal-Rules.com: At the beginning of the last tour you were playing for about two hours, but as the tour progressed you dropped a couple of songs cutting the set down somewhat. What was the reason for that?

Vinny: Yeah, we started with a long set and then we just cut it because at a couple of shows we had to play less time and then we pulled the songs out and everybody went, "Let's just play that." But then that got longer because we started jamming, so what went from... we played for two hours, down to an hour and forty-five minutes, then it went back up to almost two hours, because on "Heaven And Hell" we started jamming shit, which was good because we were enjoying it so much. We just started jamming and improvising, so that's a good thing.

Metal-Rules.com: Can you tell us what stage the new HEAVEN AND HELL studio album is at right now?

Vinny: Right now we have six songs... about six songs written. They're just demos and they sound fucking awesome! Heavy, great... sounds like really cool SABBATH!

Metal-Rules.com: These six new songs that you've got at this point, how would you compare them to the three new tracks ("The Devil Cried", "Shadow of the Wind" and "Ear in the Wall") that were recorded for the BLACK SABBATH ("The Dio Years") compilation that brought about this whole reunion in the first place?

Vinny: Well, the [new stuff on the] compilation was just written by Tony [Iommi] and Ronnie [James Dio]... and it was done quickly, the first time they got together. We now have a whole tour of playing together behind us, so now we got together and Tony and Ronnie wrote a lot of stuff and then there's a lot of stuff with Geezer. Then we got together... we haven't played together, they write it on the computer and then I put drums on it. So, it's a lot more relaxed since we've played together so long, it's a lot tighter and a lot more focused.

Metal-Rules.com: That sounds very promising. So, this time around all of the members are participating in the writing process?

Vinny: Yeah... it seems to work best if Tony and Ronnie sit there and start the things and then... sometimes [together] with Geezer too or sometimes Geezer will come in and put his thing in there [later], you know. But mainly the two or three of them [write the material]. And then we'll get together in a room when we've got a couple more songs and play them and then we'll go in the studio and record them.

Big Name Singer For Velvet Revolver?

VELVET REVOLVER has been looking for a new frontman since dismissing Scott Weiland back in April. Rumored candidates have included ex-SKID ROW singer Sebastian Bach, former MTV VJ Steve Isaacs (THE PANIC CHANNEL) and ex-SPACEHOG vocalist Royston Langdon, who has apparently had several successful rehearsal sessions with the band.

Speaking to the Artisan News Service on July 23, 2008 at a fashion event in Los Angeles, VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum stated about the group's lead singer search, "We got a call from a pretty big guy who wants to be our singer. I can't say who that is yet but talks are happening about it and hopefully we'll see what happens in the next couple of months."

Asked about the possibility of Sebastian Bach joining VELVET REVOLVER, Sorum said, "No. No, it's a lot cooler than that but I don't know if it's going to happen so I can't say. It's cool that people are calling us and wanting to get in the band, so that's exciting."

Langdon performed last month with VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash at a charity event in Las Vegas.

Langdon's previous band, SPACEHOG, released three albums before breaking up in 2002. Their gold-selling 1995 debut, "Resident Alien", featured the hit "In The Meantime".

Weiland reunited with his previous act, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, and is currently on the road with them.

Scorpions Guitarist Interview

Shelly Harris of KNAC.COM recently conducted an interview with SCORPIONS guitarist Matthias Jabs. An excerpt from the chat follows.

KNAC.COM: I've heard that you've done it in the past, but on the world tour this year you are letting the fans in the different countries vote on the set list, which means you have to quickly get ready to play different songs for each country's leg of the tour. Do you already know which songs you'll be playing on this American leg?

Jabs: "I've seen the final result of the vote for the U.S. [the web site vote ended on Sunday, July 27], and we always sit together the day of the show, in the afternoon, because we need to let the lighting designer know — you have to program the desk for the order of the songs — so the crew needs to be informed exactly, but we are much more flexible. And we have a different situation in the first three shows, because we are playing with Sammy Hagar as a package, and that means in California, because of the strict curfews, and the situation — there are three bands I think — we don't play as long as we normally do. In Europe we play like two hours and twenty, and here it's just like 90 minutes, so that automatically changes the set, because we have to leave quite a few songs out. So, we will talk about the setlist when we all meet [before the first show] in a few days."

KNAC.COM: So, even though SCORPIONS obviously have a very long and extensive song list — at least a hundred — it's like you're ready to wing it and play whatever you have to play, really?

Jabs: "Yes, yes — there's not one song that we don't know. Some of them, like #89, those songs are not so popular, and with us they're not so popular either. (laughs) And therefore we haven't played those, and if we don't have to play them, we won't, but everything in the top 50 we know right away. Also, we keep changing the set around. You can imagine the votes, the results in Russia, are totally different from the ones in the U.S., or in Spain, they vote for different songs than in England or Japan."

KNAC.COM: I know your most recent album, "Humanity - Hour One", came out last year, and will you also be playing some of those songs?

Jabs: "A few but not too many — it has to be the right proportion. People don't like it if you play too many new songs, but we play three or maybe four. They [Americans] want to hear the back catalogue — the 'Rock You Like A Hurricane', 'No One Like You', 'Holiday', 'The Zoo' and all that, and once you do that, the first hour is gone!"

Scott Weiland Being A Complete Douche Bag.... Again.

Jim Louvau of The Arizona Republic reviewed STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' July 29, 2008 concert at the the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. An excerpt from his review follows.

"As lights went out and [Scott] Weiland [vocals] appeared in front of his microphone stand muttering something about VELVET REVOLVER and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS before the rest of the band had even made their way on stage. Part of the beauty of attending a Weiland event is that you never know exactly what version of the singer is going to show up and the singer's erratic behavior set the tone early on for what would be a rough night for the '90s alt-heroes.

"The lengthy set opened with 'Big Empty' from 'The Crow' soundtrack. Dressed in a grey suit Weiland stumbled around the stage and fell into drummer Eric Kretz's drum kit which confirmed he is now officially the Amy Winehouse of rock 'n' roll. When he did sing he often forgot words or changed them. 'Conversations Kill' quickly became 'Masturbation Kill'.

"The singer's incoherent rants in between songs were cut off by his band members starting the next song to stop the bleeding. Guitarist Dean DeLeo and his brother bassist Robert DeLeo looked humiliated as they ripped through classics like 'Wicked Garden', 'Big Bang Baby' and 'Vasoline'."

James Hetfield's 45!

The Pulse of Radio reports: METALLICA frontman James Hetfield turns 45 on Sunday (August 3). One of the most influential figures in hard rock and heavy metal of the past 25 years, Hetfield was born in Los Angeles, California to parents who were devout Christian Scientists. A strict religious upbringing, which included seeing his mother die of cancer because their religion forbade medical treatment, fueled the lyrics of many METALLICA songs, including "Until It Sleeps", "The God That Failed" and "Fade to Black".

Hetfield learned to play piano and drums before picking up a guitar at the age of 14. His early bands during his high school years included OBSESSION, PHANTOM LORD and LEATHER CHARM. When LEATHER CHARM's drummer left, an ad that Hetfield placed in a local paper for a new drummer led him to meet Danish-born Lars Ulrich. The pair formed METALLICA in 1981 and remain its two original members. The group has since become one of the biggest rock bands in history, selling 57 million records in the U.S. and 100 million worldwide.

Hetfield struggled for years with addictions to alcohol and drugs, finally entering rehab in 2001 during the turbulent sessions for the band's "St. Anger" album. He emerged clean and sober and remains so to this day.

While doing press for the 2004 documentary "Some Kind of Monster", which chronicled the events surrounding "St. Anger", Hetfield admitted that he used to drink to maintain his public image. "There's no doubt that I played into the image that was portrayed in the press, portrayed in people's description of why they liked METALLICA," he said. "I didn't want to disappoint. I wanted to be that guy. I wanted to put that mask on, and then keeping the mask on 24 hours became suffocating, and I could not do it anymore."

Hetfield has been married to Francesca since 1997. They have three children, Cali, Castor and Marcella.

His hobbies include skateboarding, hunting, water sports, snowboarding, collecting guitars and customizing classic automobiles.

Hetfield has listed some of his main musical influences as BLACK SABBATH, THIN LIZZY, AEROSMITH, MOTÖRHEAD, QUEEN and LED ZEPPELIN.

METALLICA's ninth studio effort, "Death Magnetic", is due out in September.

Turkey's leading 24-hour news channel NTV aired a lengthy report on METALLICA's July 27, 2008 appearance at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul. The report — which includes an interview with James Hetfield about the group's forthcoming album "Death Magnetic" and the "Some Kind of Monster" movie — can be viewed below.

Three Anthrax Home Videos Get A DVD Upgrade

Three ANTHRAX VHS home videos will finally be released on DVD for the first time on September 2 via MVD Entertainment Group/Cherry Red. A description of each title follows:

[***UPDATE***: ANTHRAX's manager, Izvor Zivkovic of Split Media, has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET regarding the upcoming DVD releases: "As of right now, these releases are not sanctioned by ANTHRAX or its management as no one has approached us about them. We are contacting the label to find out more."]

"Through Time P.O.V." (details):

This DVD encapsulates the growth through years of a band that were always FANS of the music they have played. Through both the live and interview footage, most of which you've never seen before, (unless you were there!), it's evident that through time, ANTHRAX has held true to what they believe in — THE MUSIC. This also features six of the band's 10 UK hit singles. It's a rare archive for ANTHRAX fans everywhere!

"Oidivnikufesin N.F.V." (details):

This DVD contains a full show from rock legends ANTHRAX, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon during their UK tour of 1987. This footage is from a 1988 VHS release — never released before on DVD. As one of the most popular bands of the 1980s thrash metal scene, ANTHRAX are notable for combining metal with rap and hardcore music early on. They have sold over 10 million albums worldwide and are classified as one of the 'big four' of thrash metal alongside METALLICA, MEGADETH and SLAYER. Both the band and individual members have made many, many TV appearances across famous U.S. shows and in the UK they became well known partly for this legendary concert.

"Live Noize" (details):

After ten years of playing the globe and millions of records sold New York's premier metal band ANTHRAX united with rappers PUBLIC ENEMY for the first tour of its kind. Through this tour ANTHRAX broke down barriers which other acts wouldn't even undertake. It was the most exciting tour of their career, and this video is a documentation of just that. In the summer of 1991, ANTHRAX made musical history by collaborating with PUBLIC ENEMY on one of the most renowned singles of recent times. "Bring The Noise" captured rap, alternative and heavy metal radio. The success of that single prompted these two bands to become co-headliners in the "Bring The Noise" tour. The result was a groundbreaking bill that bought together diverse fans from different musical backgrounds. Filmed at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Southern California, "Live Noise" captures ANTHRAX's performance during that tour. The show incorporates approximately one hour of live performance with back stage footage that includes PUBLIC ENEMY. The encore is an extended rockin' version of "Bring The Noise", metal and rap at last fusing into a seamless whole. Includes band interviews covering the early years of ANTHRAX.

Ratt Guitarist Quits, Quiet Riot Replacement?
According to Metal Sludge, John Corabi (former MÖTLEY CRÜE singer) has quit his gig as the rhythm guitarist in RATT and is rumored to have been replaced by former QUIET RIOT guitarist Carlos Cavazo.

XM's Boneyard host Eddie Trunk, who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM, conducted an interview with RATT singer Stephen Pearcy on July 9, 2008 after the band's performance at this year's Rocklahoma festival in Pryor, Oklahoma. Trunk also spoke briefly with Pearcy and guitarist Warren DeMartini before the concert about how the reunion shows have gone so far and the band's future plans. Watch the two clips below.

RATT celebrated the "Year Of The Ratt" with a very special West Coast U.S. run of dates in April. In honor of their Southern California roots, the band embarked on a four-show mini-tour to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the "Ratt" EP.

RATT recently performed the entire EP along with other RATT faves live on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" to an overwhelming response. Host Bob Coburn expressed that he was "totally blown away" by RATT and that they "flat-out kicked ass" as they delivered one of the best shows in the 27 years of "Rockline".

Motley Crue Partner With Guitar Center

Continuing its commitment to the support of aspiring artists, Guitar Center and MÖTLEY CRÜE announced today the launch of "Guitar Center On-Stage" — Your Chance To Make Rock History. "Guitar Center On-Stage" and the world's most notorious rock band will provide one up-and-coming band the ultimate, career-altering opportunity — the chance to open on tour for rock icons, MÖTLEY CRÜE. Starting today, through September 21 2008, bands across the United States are invited to submit their music at www.makerockhistory.com for a chance to win a prize package that includes an opening slot on MÖTLEY CRÜE's 2009 U.S. tour (dates to be announced at a later date), $25,000 cash, $20,000 in exclusive new gear from Gibson Guitar, management from Tenth St. Entertainment, and a recording deal from Eleven Seven Music, MÖTLEY's management and record label.

Guitar Center has engaged FameCast to power the submission site for "Guitar Center On-Stage," using FameCasts proprietary contest management platform to collect and present each band's submissions and rank them using a variety of metrics such as online fan voting and community engagement. A judging panel including Tenth St. Entertainment and Eleven Seven Records will then review the top bands, selecting 30 bands to advance to regional evaluation events held in mid-October at Guitar Center locations in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. After narrowing the list to the top six bands at the regional events, Guitar Center will host a final round of evaluation on November 12, 2008 at Guitar Center Hollywood, where each of the six bands will perform live for members of MÖTLEY CRÜE. One band will be notified via a personal phone call from a member of MÖTLEY CRÜE that they have been chosen as the winner and that the grand prize, which will include going on tour with MÖTLEY CRÜE, is theirs.

Also on hand at the press announcement at Guitar Center on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood was Chris Taylor Brown, lead vocalist from TRAPT who are currently touring on Crüe Fest. "It is an incredible opportunity to be on the road with one of rock's greatest bands. TRAPT has sold more than two million albums, we have four hit singles, a new album out on Tuesday (August 5) and it's still an honor as well as an enormous boost to our audience to be on the bill with MÖTLEY CRÜE." Guitar Center spends millions every year behind programs that help our customers realize their musical dreams.

"'Guitar Center On-Stage' is our most audacious and ambitious program yet. We are offering nothing short of a chance for greatness. A way to step out of the shadows of obscurity and into the light of legends," said Norman Hajjar, EVP and Chief Marketing Officer for Guitar Center.

Allen Kovac, CEO and Founder of Tenth Street Entertainment and Eleven Seven Music said, "Tenth Street Entertainment has historically achieved success with unique and robust strategic marketing initiatives for its clients. In just 24 short months, Eleven Seven Music has become the #1 Independent Active Rock record company with five percent of the market share at rock radio. Aligned with the advertising, brand recognition and credibility Guitar Center is providing, Tenth Street and Eleven Seven are excited to give an up-and-coming rock band the best possible support to jump start a long and successful career in the music and entertainment businesses."

MÖTLEY CRÜE's Mick Mars notes, "Our partnership with Guitar Center gives us the opportunity to help an up-and-coming band by giving them every element needed to succeed. Like Ozzy did for us when he took an unknown band called MÖTLEY CRÜE on the road, we too are looking for the next generation's great rock band."

Press Conference Master of Ceremonies Jim Richards, Program Director of San Diego's 101 KGB FM says, "MÖTLEY CRÜE has remained one of the most relevant bands of their era. Their single 'Saints Of Los Angeles' is currently Top 10 at Active Rock and Top 5 at Mainstream Rock and played alongside bands like DISTURBED, LINKING PARK and AVENGED SEVENFOLD. None of their contemporaries have experienced this kind of staying power. This program is a dream come true for any young musician."

"Gibson Guitar has always supported bands on every level and as a music innovator we work hard to support emerging bands by giving them opportunities for success through our many resources," said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar. "This program will launch the next MÖTLEY CRÜE and we are proud to partner with our friends at Guitar Center for such an exciting promotion."

Sharon Osbourne Interview

Parade magazine has published a brand new interview with Ozzy Osbourne's wife/manager Sharon. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

Parade: Do you look at the avalanche of reality shows that has followed "The Osbournes" and wonder what you started?

Sharon: It's terrible, isn't it? Do you know what? It's like I said to Ozzy, "People will just have go get over it." I haven't seen most of them. I'll watch maybe five minutes of something and check it out.

Parade: What do you think of what you see?

Sharon: I'm totally amazed at how shameless people are. They will repeat something that's been done over and over again and act as if it's unique. I think that the younger generation thinks all they have to do is get on TV and act a bit crazy and things will happen for them. They've got it wrong because you need to have a talent to get really famous.

Parade: So you see a lot of wannabes who don't have a clue about what it takes even though they're getting their proverbial 15 minutes of fame?

Sharon: You've got your superstars. You've got your celebrities. And then you've got your people who I call "infamous."

Parade: You look terrific. How's Ozzy doing?

Sharon: I'm great. He's great. This weekend we're off to Dallas where he'll be performing. He's working on a new album at the same time as doing live shows. He never stops writing music.

I have an account at YouTube.  One of my subscriptions is to MetallicaTV, which posts MissionMetallica clips (I believe).  Anyway, there is an account feature I use that sends email notices of updated subscriptions.  One day last week, I got an update that included all my subscriptions, including a couple missionmetallica clips  ; )
