Baseball has the same problem. I agree, HB.

its about fans voting in local faves, not the best player.  at one point MTL had all six starters.  teams that have more fans can generate more votes.  the whole all star game is a waste of time to me, and needs to go away.

You KNOW I was kidding about all my comments with you tonight. I, too, think that the Detroit players should have done the right thing and shown up. Like I said with my first post, all I was going to say on the subject. They were supposedly voted in by the fans (I still do have my doubts as to the veracity of the "fan count") and they should have gone save for, as you say, extreme circumstances. Still, I defend Detroit to the death! You probably have not been to my city but I've actually been to yours as a kid (I remember it as being very nice, btw). Spent about a month in Ottawa, as well. My pop had a time-share near Sault St. Marie, MI that we traded off one year for Ottawa and travelled around a bit. Winter, to boot. To us, it was warmer. The upper ( as we call the Upper Peninsula of MI) picks up lake-effect wind and snow. Especially around the Mackinac isle area of MI. I believe it is actually north of you, in fact  (too lazy to find a map, IOW...could be wrong).

Like I would argue about a Pittsburgh fan, you are preaching to the choir when you talk about hockey. I grew up in a suburb of Detroit (Grosse Pointe) where we sit 15 minutes drive out of Canada. We get all the Ontario stations on both tv and radio. CBC to watch hockey was a no-brainer and also what keeps my tagline here. Bought most of my beer from a brewer's retail and ran it home through the tunnel (higher alcohol than the watered-down version of the states). Hockey is sacrilege here in the south, IMO. Water and oil. Don't go together.

Like you said, it is a RELIGION to most on the Canadian side of Michigan as well. Believe it or not. College and Pro. Biggest game in college is University of Michigan vs. Michigan State. They set up the rink in the football field and there is standing room only. Especially when it is in "the Big House" (U of M...100,000+ stadium). I argue that most in Canada have NO idea how important this game is to us.

I could have cited almost all the numbers about the Wings by heart but I wasn't kidding about wanting to see your pic of the cup. Like you, I would have KILLED to see it up close and personal (says the guy with a Molson Ice in hand! LOL!).

WELL THAT'S THE WAY IT USUALLY WORKS FOR THE HOST CITY (AT LEAST WHERE HOCKEY MATTERS),YOU WOULD SEE THE SAME THING IN ALL CANADIAN MARKETS,U.S. MARKETS SUCH AS PHILLY,DETROIT,NEW YORK,AND EVEN BOSTON...HOWEVER PUTTING ASIDE THAT I AM A MONTREAL FAN,THIS WAS A SPECIAL ONE...THE FRANCHISE IS A CENTURY OLD,AND MANY OF THE PLAYERS COMMENTED ON HOW SPECIAL IT WAS FOR THEM TO BE AT THIS PARTICULAR ALL-STAR WEEKEND FOR THAT VERY REASON...IT REALLY IS ALMOST A RELIGION IN THAT TOWN,YOU'D HAVE TO BE FROM THIS COUNTRY OR THIS AREA TO REALLY MAKE SENSE OF IT I GUESS,IT'S A COAST TO COAST TO COAST UNDERSTANDING....SAME THING WITH THE LEAFS...SO EXTRA REPRSENTATION FOR THE HOST TEAM CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF EXISTENCE ISN'T ALL THAT BAD OF A THING I SUPPOSE...HOW MANY OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORTS FRANCHISES HAVE SUCH A HISTORY?...THE WHOLE WEEKEND WAS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL DONE,BUT THIS FRANCHISE IS KNOWN WORLDWIDE IN SPORTS CIRCLES FOR DOING JUST THAT...

It just looked very "odd" that all the starters came from only 4 teams and that Montreal was very well represented in a home town game.  Granted they are huge hockey fans and probably spent every waking moment voting.

ACTUALLY IT'S NOT RIGGED,THE FANS VOTED IN THE PICKS...ALL THE TEMS YOU LISTED ARE DOING QUITE WELL IN THE STANDINGS,PLUS THEY ALL HAVE 'STAR POWER' IF YOU WILL...
OTHER THAN THE TWO BONEHEADS (WHO GUIDO AND I WERE HAVING A BIT OF FUN AT EACH OTHER),THE STARS WERE THERE,AND THAT'S WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT...PEOPLE PAY BIG BUCKS TO SEE THESE EVENTS,SO THEY DESERVE TO BE REWARDED BY THESE MILLIONAIRES..
IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN,YOU'RE A BRUINS FAN TO SOME DEGREE...WELL THEY WERE WELL REPRESENTED:THOMAS,SAVARD,CHARA,HEAD COACH JULIEN...CHICAGO HAD THEIR UP AND COMING YOUNG GUNS THERE...TOEWS AND KANE... PITTSBURGH OF COURSE YOU HAVE CROSBY(WHO DIDN'T PLAT BUT DID SHOW UP AT LEAST) & MALKIN...SO IT WASN'T THAT BAD OF A MIX.

But really, guys like Ovechkin and Tim Thomas not being starters ?  Are hockey fans in general really that ignorant or does the league have a hand in this ?  That would be like Kobe Bryant  or Labron James not being starters for the NBA all stars !
[guidogodoy] Monday, January 26, 2009 10:10:36 PM
No, it isn't just you. I actually often think that in a lot of major sports. Hockey just seems to be one of many.

Then again, I am openly prejudiced. I loathe Anaheim (and my father is a traitor for supporting them...turncoat!). Here my brother goes and moves to Toronto. Goes to Cali with a freakin' Leaf's hat on?! He is dead to me as well!

Hey guys !  I know I'm a relative hockey newbie, but is it just me that thinks the whole starting lineup of the all star game was rigged ?  It seemed more like Montreal / Pittsburgh  V.S.  Chicago / Anaheim.  Then the rest of the league was sprinkled in.  These teams aren't even leading their divisions and they are dominating the starting linups.

You are just trying to avoid the fact that I both agreed with you and that you ARE really hairy, aren't you?

It's ok. No need to feel ashamed. We "yanks" all know it is your game and that it is so cold there that you have to wear clothes all the time so both problems are hereby solved. Now repeat after me: "tranquility now, tranquility now."  Light a nice fragrant candle, dim the lights and crack a Mooshead. All is well.

-------------------------
The Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cup championships (11)[1] of any NHL franchise based in the United States, and are third overall in total NHL championships, behind the Montreal Canadiens (24) and Toronto Maple Leafs (13). They currently play home games in the 20,066 capacity Joe Louis Arena after having spent over 40 years playing in Olympia Stadium.

From 1933–34 to 1965–66, the Red Wings only missed the playoffs four times. After almost two decades as an also-ran, the Red Wings have made the playoffs in 23 of the last 25 seasons, including the last 17 in a row. This is the longest current streak of post-season appearances in all of American professional sports.

I ask for a picture and I get smack about the greatest hockey team on EARTH!

Personally, I think they just didn't want to leave Hockeytown. "Recent success?!?" Surely, you cannot let your jealous rage lead you to actually BELIEVE this comment? I know you haven't been there, but there are more than ONE championship banner hanging from the roof of the Joe (and I'll leave it at that...I think they should have gone too, lol!)

Very nice tale, indeed.

Now make with the picture of you and Lord Stanley there, Wolfman! You the shy type or something? Unusually hairy? Inquiring minds want to see!
