I think if a public execution were to have taken place it would've sent a message to Jihadist.  But now we'll never know.

I think this photo sums up what we think of Osama. He had made it clear he would never be taken alive, and I do believe he was armed. Good riddance.
Just saw a newsreal, he was not armed. Does not matter. Glad he is gone.

Not really something that pisses me off but the assassination of Osama Bin Laden was in my opinion a messy affair and was sloppily executed. I'm ok that one of our soldiers killed him cus after all he was following orders. But his assassination was a cheap shot for political agenda on President Obama's part. Why couldn't Osama Bin Laden be apprehended and tried for war crimes and THEN be sentenced to death just like President Bush did with Suddam Hussein? Even a despicable worm like him deserves or reserves the right to a trial. After all we were gonna kill him anyway, I would've prefered a public execution....and have it held right in the middle of New York City's Ground Zero!!!

Sounds like a very balanced build, Ron.

Right now I'm looking at a HP-Pavilion / AMD Athlon ll Quad-Core Processor / 4GB Mem / 1TB Hard Drive / wireless N technology / and has Win7 pre-installed.  HDMI for the flat screen is important to us.

(obviously, I am reading these posts in reverse order)

"Want a computer to last at least 5 years?" Why would you still stick with a dual core, then? Hell, popping a quad into a new Sandybridge mobo (- Cougar Point. Intel fixed the problem with the first release) is a minor bump in price but will take a 2 core to task. Like I said in my first comment, why anyone would put an outdated processor into a new build is beyond me. Especially when the price difference isn't that great. Go AMD and Linux if you really want to get most bang for the buck.

An OCZ (Vertex or Agility) 2 +/- 50GB drive hovers around the $100 -110 range. Not a great mem=buck ratio but getting better every day.
While you can get them with greater capacity, that size would be enough for the OS. Burst read/write speeds are outstanding. Yup, exacly right, pseudo-nerd. A FLASH! Heh.

Well, I've decided I'm going with Win7 because XP Pro will no longer have support as of 2014.  The upgrades I make now I want to last the next 5 years!!

That being said, I have new issues to deal with.  Though I still think a dual core processor is fine for me, you've got me thinking about the quad.  You both hit the nail on the head as far as all the apps that slow a computer down and if I'm upgrading it only makes sense to do it right the first time.  I am NOT a comp geek by any stretch, though I am able to understand what ya'll are talking about.

I looked into the various SSD's and they all seem more than adequate for my needs.  This would be a seperate purchase along with my kit, but I'm finding it difficult to find what's compatible with what.  I've always been the type to learn hands on as I go, but the $'s add up if I make a mistake.

I think I need to take some time to absord all the information I'm gathering!!  lol

Whats pissing me off, well I'm not actually pissed off about it but more disappointed is this lockout from the NFL. I've been an NFL fan since the 70's,not into college sports, just NBA and NFL with the NFL my favorite and to see this bickering...the millionares vs. the billionares...ect....

I don't want to discuss the situation behind all this, but I love the "spirit of the game"...sure there are "some" players that care more about the money than sacrificing themselves to win but there are also the players that are surely quabbling over money but once they get on the field and think about winning a Super bowl they leave that all behind and have passion for the spirit of the game itself.

But thinking we won't have an NFL season this September is a letdown to say the least. The Cleveland Browns have been my favorite team since 1985 ( yes I know they fuckin suck lol ) and the New England Patriots have been my 2nd fav. team since 1993 with Peyton Manning being my favorite QB along with Brady.

And New England's loss to the smart assed irritating big mouth pompous New York Jets(I've always hated the Jets but not as much as I do now) in January 3 months ago was the worse disappointment personally I have ever seen in my life,I was bummed out all day long and Victoria laughed her ass off at me lol ( she is from Denver and loved John Elway,as I did too ha! )

But yeah I've seen worse losses by points,blow-outs ect...but never the disappointment of a team that went 14-2 and lost to the freaking rival Jets, that sucked! Going back to the point, its a shame that there may be no football because I'm aching for the Patriots to beat the Jets both times in the regular season if not a match up in the playoffs have both teams make it next year, what a shame these money hungry mofos can't get it together!

How much are SS hard drives running these days Guid? I know they were outragous a few years back when they were new, like anything tech wise. Just wondering if they had come in to the realm of actual reality yet.
In a flash~ as in huge storage flash drive. I'd love to have one, not that I need one, but I want one. lol

Nupe beat me to the punch, Ron. Word for word. Exactly the reaoning behind getting at least a quad core, what OS to run and why. I run Win Pro on five of my six Winboxes with Win 7 on the final laptop just because of the quad core. All OEM versions of the OS. Not even a need to bat an eye at any Microsoft OS in between: either WinXP Pro or 7.

Gaming or not, it is exactly as Nupe said...apps that take advantage of a quad core, as most now do, would have one dedicated to them making multitasking much faster. While I am not a fan of "kits" when I build machines, I do also recommend an SSD (solid state harddrive) just for the OS with a backup physical drive (I currently run Seagate Blacks) for storage. Putting the OS on a SSD makes the typically sluggish load time for any flavor of Windows a ... well ... flash! (<==nerds will get it).

The more cores you have in the processor, the easier it is to run multiple programs at once, as each core is responsible for a specific program only. For the operating system, I'd suggest that you stick with XP Pro if you're only going to get a dual-core processor, as any of the features added by Win7 are rather heavy on the processor. But if you get a quad core, Win7 is my suggestion, especially if you don't play a lot of games (as most of the older games have difficulties running with Win7).

When exploring the different types of processors available, I was told that for my needs a dual core is really all I need and that a quad core would be overkill as I don't really do any on-line gaming.  Can you tell me what the benefit of going quad over dual is for me?  Also, these barebone kits don't come with an OS, so I'm debating between sticking with XP Pro and Windows 7.  What do you suggest?

J.D., Don't feel like your alone, all this is a lot easier than it appears (or so it seems).  You just need to decide on what it is you want from your system, investigate what will give it to you and let everything else fall into place.

You want a dual core in the age of hexa cores?
Go quad core at least, Ron. You'll be obsolete out of the box with a dual.

Now who wants a webcam! LOL!
