Wow. That's a pretty darn good review Joe, did you write that? I feel bad for just posting a picture of a great album after reading your writings on Live Insurrection. Very thorough. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bazooka Joe from Saturday, March 22, 2008 8:17:17 PM) | | Bazooka Joe wrote: | | Halford - Live Insurrection
Release Date - 2001
Rating - 5/5
Live Insurrection is arguably one of the best live albums ever recorded. Not a single track on this album is weak by any means but almost every track rips the skin off your face with ease. It includes a very healthy selection of Judas Priest classics, Fight thrashers, and Halford's newest songs. Along with all that, it also includes the very first song Rob Halford recorded solo with Pantera, Light Comes Out Of Black, a cover of The Scorpion's hit Blackout performed with founder and guitarist Rudolf Schenker, and three studio tracks at the end to top it all off. All the songs were taken from the best performances at each concert during the world tour and a couple were added in with some studio magic because the band felt they were best performed at the rehearsal or soundcheck they were taken from. The tour took the band everywhere, and one very special show at Madison Square Garden with metal legends Iron Maiden and Queensryche ended with all three singers performing the track The One You Love To Hate together live. Definitly a great moment in metal history. Everywhere the tour went, from pubs and clubs, to the prestigious Rock In Rio festival in Brazil, the band delivered nothing but pure Heavy Metal. The Halford band at the time, Metal God Rob Halford, two guitarists "Metal" Mike Chlasciak and Pat Lachman, bassist, Ray Riendeau, and drummer Bobby Jarzombek all had there work cut out for them as all songs they performed required the best of there abilities.
The album opens with the title track of the Resurrection album. It definitly is a bit of a resurrection for Rob after his Two project with Trent Reznor which was commercially a failure in everyone's eyes. This brought him back the metal that he is best at. The audience cheers and shouts with Rob saying "Resurrection" and then coming on stage and screaming it a second time and the show takes off. Quite a song to start with as it definitly gets the crowd going, then they follow up with an equally good track, Made In Hell. As the song suggests, us metal fans are definitly born to raise some hell. The song is about Rob's travels over time and taking the metal music all across the world and helping make Heavy Metal what it is today.
Next up is two the Fight tracks Into The Pit and Nailed To The Gun. With Pat Lachman asking the audience "Are you motherfuckers ready?!?! Cause We're gonna go into the fuckin' pit!" they tear into this songs with full force and keep the agression flowing. Definitly the best and heaviest Fight songs recorded, they are a great choice for the band and fit well.
The Pantera/Rob Halford collaboration Light Comes Out of Black is next. It definitly is not the same without Dimebag shredding the guitar and it's a great shame that he is passed away now. But the band thunders on in this song as good as ever and definitly do the song justice.
The tempo doesn't stop yet because there are 3 Priest tracks after all that. Starting with the rarity Stained Class, Halford never sounded better. Even with his lower register of singing he can still hit those ear piercing high notes with ease and it really shows on this album. Jawbreaker is next, another rarity that Judas Priest themselves almost never play. The band really tears it up on the Priest tracks but they just aren't the same with Glenn, KK, Ian, and Scott playing the music. It's a great tribute to those old tunes and Halford does them well, even in his old age. Next is Running Wild, a great Priest number and it definitly tells the truth, the Halford band is running wild at this point.
After that metal feast, they bring out the more mellow song Slow Down. It's about the addictions of drugs and such and how it's better to just slow down, take a look at your problems, and work them out because it's not impossible. A good choice to give Rob a break from screaming for a few minutes. The duet with Bruce Dickinson, The One You Love To Hate, is also included in there set. A faster paced rocker and a good live tune, both metal legends do an amazing job together and it really shows.
The finally Fight song on the album, Life In Black, is next on the list. The audience was added into this for the rehearsal or sound check reasons listed above, but even without the audience this song is still a great, slow, and very angry song.
And the Halford songs keep rolling in. Hell's Last Survivor is a bonus track from Resurrection and definitly does it's part in the setlist. Live, Rob Halford makes the songs even better, adding in more screams, more aggression, and just all around making them even more metal. Sad Wings is proof of this because studio wise, this song is almost melodic and a good heavy tune. But live, it's a screaming face melter. Saviour comes next and fits in very well with the rest. The 7 and a half minute epic, Silent Screams follows up. Maybe one of the best songs written in 2000, it shows exactly what the Halford band can do. Everything from soft music, to thrasing metal, and epic choruses is included in this song. If your a Halford fan, you'll know this track well.
On the second disc, it opens with a 14 second audio sample of the audience roaring and chanting "Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay, Halford, Halford".
The final Halford song in the set, Cyberworld is done next. About the revolution of technology and the internet, it's a great song and definitly get's the point across live with the band.
From here on, it's all Judas Priest, with the exception of Blackout. If they could have chosen better Priest classics to perform, I think we all might have died from amazement. At the first note of The Hellion, the entire audience is singing along and go crazy when they rip into Electric Eye. Easily one of the best recordings of this song even with the rest of Judas Priest. After that they go straight into Riding On The Wind. Rob has never sounded better on this song, despite his age being in the late 40's, he sounds exactly like he did when he originally recorded it in 1982. Perfect. After all that, they pull out an amazing classic, Genocide. I'm just speechless thinking that they actually did this song. Complete with drum intro and perfect vocal performance, everything on this song is spot on and done amazingly well. After that, they just keep going back in time and doing the classics. Beyond The Realms of Death, easily one of Judas Priest's best songs to date, and performed just as good with the Halford band. Rob's vocals are spot on again, as they are in every track on this album.
British Steel seems to be the theme for the next two songs. Metal Gods blasts out as great as it is and the band do it perfectly. Always a great classic to hear live. The one and only Breaking The Law is done next and the crowd certainly goes nuts. At Rock In Rio, Rob let the entire 250,000 people sing all the words. As I said before, if you don't know this song, either get the fuck out of metal, or go buy British Steel.
This album is full of rarities and great metal moments, like the next one. The performance with Rudolf Schenker on the Scorpion's tune Blackout. A great little treasure to include as a bonus track and really fits well with the rest of the songs.
They finish the live portion of the album with another Priest classic, Tyrant. This song has NEVER sounded better anywhere else. They play it at lightning speed and just pure metal all the way through with a huge finish and amazing scream from Rob. Definitly a good song to end with.
Next are the three studio tracks. Screaming In The Dark does just that, a good thrashing tune with lots of screams. Awesome song. The last two are Priest remakes. Both were just demos released as bonus songs and never actually were recorded properly. But 20 years later, Halford does it and they sound great. Heart Of A Lion and Prisoner Of Your Eyes, too very good ballads to end the Cd with.
Live Insurrection is the epitome of a Heavy Metal live album. Full of amazing surprises and every track performed perfectly and some even better then that, every Metalhead needs to have this album in there collection.
Long Live Heavy Metal and Hail The Metal God!
