Roughly:
a nerd i someone who's bookish, knowledgeable, intelligent, often anal; knows his way around books, labs, and the like much better than around social settings or (God forbid!) women. Of course, there are also femal enerds. :-)

a geek is just awkward, clumsy, and simply ill at ease in pretty much any situation; a geek can be smart, but doesn't have to be.
