[Head banger] Monday, December 08, 2008 8:33:00 PM
RJD is an awesome singer.  the line that gets me EVERY time I hear it is "Sing me a song your a singer..."

DF, was ozzy a great singer back in the day.  I was impressed that he seemed coherant, jumped around a lot and got the words right.  his vocal abilities didnt impress me much.  but I didnt think he could move like that.  he is no match for Dio though.  Rob Halford has to be on his best day to compare.

Well said... I am a huge Dio fan. I was just so impressed with their show on this Metal Masters tour....Ronnie James Dio was amazing... his voice, his showmanship... he never fails to "deliver the goods". I had a chance to say hello.. but I let that moment get away from me. From what I've heard... he is nice to the fans and always takes his time when he meets them.
[_strat_] Monday, December 08, 2008 9:10:25 AM
Lol. Well, he is short, you cant deny that. I saw an interwiev with him once where he was surrounded by his bandmates from DIO. The rest of them were somewhere of a normal height, just Ronnie was down there like a child. And he has that mischevious, impish look as well.

But that aside, I said it before and I say it again, an awesome singer. His singing really sends shivers down my spine. AND he is good lyricist as well. Theres a song on the Black Sabbath: The Dio years album (a great album, worth every cent) that starts with "One fine day... In hell". How could I possibly not like that? Or lines like "shadow in the dark"? Thats metal! Not singing about chicks or partying. Thats just pop with guitar solos, as far as Im concerned. Dungeons and dragons, swords and sorcery. Thats metal for me!

Now, you can say Im a geek, because quite frankly... I am.

His voice is distinctive, no doubt. He was a very good entertainer. I loved his shows. I have been to probably eight or nine of them. Like I said, he has simply abused his body to the point where he is hardly a living human being! All his mumbling, shuffling and confusion are NOT a joke.

As for Dio...a gnome?!?!? HAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!! That is TOO funny! He certainly is "ol iron lung", that's for sure! I do not think a cage could hold him! HA!!!!!!!!

Mhm. Dio is the little man with the huge voice. He looks really cool too. Kinda like a little gnome that I would keep locked in a cage in my house to do my bidding...

As for Ozzy, what I was refering to is that his voice has character. IDK what an entertainer he is, because I never seen him live. But Iron Man doesnt sound the same without Ozzy.

[Deep Freeze] Monday, December 08, 2008 7:40:17 AM
Dio is great.  A real vocal talent. Ozzy was good when he was at his best but he is no Dio. He is no Halford, either. Still, as far as being an "entertainer", you have a point. THAT he is! Of course, so is David Lee Roth. I never thought much of him vocally BUT he can work a crowd. Remarkable entertainer.

[_strat_] Monday, December 08, 2008 7:36:34 AM
Well, IDK, I was never much of a singer, but in Ozzies case I think that there never was much talent behind it. Just character.

As for R.J. Dio, that is another thing. One of my favourite singers of all time, and Id dare say that I prefer him over Halford sometimes. Glad to hear he can still pull it off.
[Deep Freeze] Monday, December 08, 2008 7:33:28 AM
The last time I heard Ozzy sing was 2000/01. Sometime in there...cannot recall exact dates. ANYWAY, he was just awful. Could not hit the proper notes, WAY flat in most spots and completely off key. He was, in short, terrible. And I am a big fan. I have seen Ozzy more than I have seen Priest! Love him! Saw him with Zakk in '89 and it was incredible!

It is a shame that he continues to try to do something he can no longer do. He is really just a shell now. A  testament to the dangers of drugs and alcohol. They have devasated his body and destroyed a true gift.
[Head banger] Monday, December 08, 2008 7:24:36 AM
solo.  sabath with Dio twice.  RJD can sing.  Sabath with martin once, but the sound set in the venue was so bad I had no idea what song they were doing most of the time.
yeah, crazy train was one of the tougher ones he atempted, that and bark at the moon.  I give him this he did a good job as an entertainer, but anything that was vocaly chalenging, it was realy chalenging for him.  zack did the 10 minute guitar solo, but I guess the fingers dont age like the voice.

What do you mean "And at least Maiden can put on a good show"..?!?! I'm hoping you only said that because you never seen Priest live......  IMO Priest sound far better live than Maiden...That said having seen them play the same venue within 8 months of each other...

IDK, Id kill to see Ozzy and Zakk playing live. Even if all they did was play the old hits like a jukebox. Then again, maybe its jsut that I havent seen them in their prime.

BUT, one thing that we can comfort ourselves with is that at least two of the classics, Priest and Maiden can still record good albums, and at least Maiden (I know that from my own experience) can put on one hell of a good show.

Hey guys,
(Good to see you Soy... how's it going in the east...???  )

I really hate to say it (I know, I'm going to hell...), but 'Save your Money'.  Especially in this day and age.  Save it to see Priest ... twice...

Oh boy, well, mostly they played shit from their new album, which pales in comparison to "Nostradamus" -- so I can only hope Priest gets their due at the Grammies.  I have a thought, "the bands should be forced to play live to get an award".  Priest would win, hands down.  It's obvious (at this show anyway... but the Saddledome has had pretty good sound compared to a lot of other venues I've been to across the country), that the recording studio does Metallica a lot of favours they can't get away with on stage.

Whatever songs they 'did' play that people were waiting for, was indistinguishable -- and even I got lost at times!  It was a garbled mess.  They played something of Master 'o Puppets, but a lot of the stuff I had gone to hear was not played.  Colley, who just loves the 'idea' of a concert and will always find some reason to like it, was "Did we just see a concert?  That was Metallica?"  Poor guy was never more disappointed, but never more proud to be a Priest fan.

We tried converting some pedestrians in the parking lot with our JP music -- guess we'll find out in the spring if the RV has blown speakers, or not...  Some young kid broke from the crowd and came running up to us, yelling "I saw Priest last year!  They were awesome!"  We told him of our trip to Vegas, etc. and I'll bet his eyes weren't that bright and excited during the concert that he had just seen.

I just hate being the bearer of bad news...
[Soylentgreen4u] Sunday, December 07, 2008 2:54:34 PM
WELL I GUESS THEN I PROBABLY MIGHT NOT GO AND CATCH THEM THEN IF IT WAS THAT BAD...I ALSO DON'T LIKE SHELLING OUT $ TO BE DISAPPOINTED...DID THEY PLAY ANYTHING FROM 'RIDE THE LIGHTNING','KILL 'EM ALL',OR 'PUPPETS'?...AND ABOUT HOW LONG WAS THE SHOW?...

Quite frankly WW, I am not at all surprised. There are so many bands that continue to play well passed their "prime". Priest is one of the few that still "have it". I saw Aerosmith a couple years ago and came away incredibly disappointed. Same thing when I saw Ozzy back in the late 90's/early 2000's...just awful. Not saying that this was the general consensus, but it was terrible for me

I am not sure if it is as you say, that they sacrifice sound for seating space, or if they just do not care anymore, but there really is something to be said for a band to play together for twenty or thirty years and be able to play with feeling and "togetherness", as you put it. That kind of emotion really comes out in the music.  All the musicians among us can really understand what I am saying. The passion for the music is easy to hear, and it is very easy to hear when it is missing.

[WhiskeyWoman] Sunday, December 07, 2008 1:38:57 PM

Probably going to catch flak for this, but ...

We were pretty excited to see Metallica in Calgary on Friday night, but were bitterly disappointed.  Now, I'm no rookie when it comes to concerts, as that was my 45th one -- one for each year I've been alive, and that includes seeing Priest (only) 5 times.  But, I am so sorry to say Metallica sucked.

Their set-up to sell *all* the seats, with no back-stage and play closer to the middle of the arena must have had something to do with absolutely terrible sound quality, and they played a shitty, shitty, set-list.  Don't know if it was b/c it was their second night of sold-out shows in town, but it was NOT good.

Maybe Hetfield needs to start drinking again, to get some inspiration.  There was no 'style', no cohesiveness in their show.  It was just separate guys doing their thing.  It lacked something important.  I wanted to be "wowed", believe me, I did ...  But when people left during the first song of their "encore", I guess I was not the only one who may have felt that way.  I was just kind of shocked.

We came out to the RV and cranked JP for all to hear how it was supposed to be done -- and to feed our unsatisfied souls with real music.  I just can't think of the last time we were that disappointed with a band's performance.

Judas Priest raises the bar, and has spoiled me for any other metal band.  Colley asked me to quote him as saying, "The more bands I see, the better Priest is."

Ok, now you can let the rotten tomatoes fly ...   Sorry.
