Gaahl Interview
Götz Kühnemund of Germany's Rock Hard magazine (web site) recently conducted a revealing interview with GORGOROTH frontman Gaahl (real name: Kristian Espedal) in which the controversial black metal singer spoke publicly for the first time about his sexual orientation and his political beliefs. The chat, which appears in issue 258 of the magazine, was translated exclusively for BLABBERMOUTH.NET and appears below in its entirety.
For a long time GORGOROTH frontman Gaahl was deemed "the evil face of black metal." There was nothing anyone wouldn't put past him or try to pin on him. In his native Norway, he regularly finds himself on the front page of the biggest daily newspapers — as Satan personified or national bogeyman supreme. But now this villain of all people has outed himself as gay and reveals a few sides to his personality very few people would've thought possible.
Rock Hard: I think it's pretty ballsy that you've outed yourself as gay. I'd love to ask you two or three questions on the subject, if you don't mind.
Gaahl: "Sure, no problem."
Rock Hard: When I met you, we talked pretty extensively about an old JUDAS PRIEST live video that had made a strong impression on you. Was Rob Halford coming out a partial factor in your publicly acknowledging your own sexual preference?
Gaahl: "No. Rob Halford is a big musical inspiration for me, but nothing more. It doesn't feel to me as if I've outed myself because up until now the whole thing was a non-issue for me. All this evolved very naturally. I feel how I feel and I've never made any secret about it."
Rock Hard: But there are people that do not accept homosexuality. Isn't it true that you were in fact attacked by someone in the backstage area at Wacken [Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany]?
Gaahl: "That's something that went down behind my back. Nobody has ever said anything derogatory to my face in person."
Rock Hard: But King (GORGOROTH bassist) witnessed something and told me about it later (Note: there was a vicious brawl backstage at Wacken, which involved King among others. It was reportedly triggered by anti-gay remarks by a certain person who found himself in a hospital shortly thereafter). How are people treating you?
Gaahl: "Absolutely positive. I haven't felt any animosities directed toward me."
Rock Hard: But there are likely people on the right fringe of the black metal scene for whom you as an avowed homosexual have become an enemy.
Gaahl: "Possibly, yes. My idea of art, and black metal especially, is the depiction of honesty without compromise. I really don't care how other people react to it or the feelings it might provoke."
Rock Hard: There are people who were previously close to you that have contacted Rock Hard over the past few months offering "information" that would purportedly make you appear in a "whole new light." Since your homosexuality has become known, those sources have gone silent. Is there a connection?
Gaahl: "Yeah, most likely (laughs). It seems like I've pre-empted a few people. And for that I'm truly sorry. (laughs) But the information in question could also pertain to certain things that happened in the early '90s."
Rock Hard: You mean political things?
Gaahl: "Yeah."
Rock Hard: Since then you've openly admitted to having associated with radical right-wing circles back then.
Gaahl: "That's correct."
Rock Hard: Can you elaborate a bit more?
Gaahl: "These are things related to the past and the environment I found myself in at the time. In the early '90s, there were all these different youth gangs in Norway and one thing led to another. I was involved in gang fights and had false friends. It wasn't about any deep political convictions but rather about disassociation. Eventually it took on violent strains. I mean, gangs don't meet up to hold discussions."
Rock Hard: Would you call yourself a one-time die-hard Nazi?
Gaahl: "No, there was no political disposition — not with me nor any of my friends. But you had to profess allegiance to a certain group if you wanted to defend yourself and not get your ass kicked. I think we all — my friends at the time as well as myself — felt that way but some of them drifted off into politically extreme circles."
Rock Hard: Were there racially motivated incidents?
Gaahl: "It was all about gang affiliation. Who attacked first and who merely defended themselves is impossible to say after all this time. But there were definitely violent altercations. Some of us even had guns."
Rock Hard: When did your attitude toward these things change?
Gaahl: "It was a slow process that took years and not something that was triggered by any one thing. I've always had friends from different cultural backgrounds, hence I was exposed to different ways of thinking from the get-go. That's probably why I've never developed a deep set of political beliefs. But there have definitely been changes and an evolution in my thinking. I'm a different person today."
Rock Hard: Who are you exactly?
Gaahl: "I am I. I'm an individualist."
Rock Hard: Are there people in your circle of friends whom you'd call right-wingers?
Gaahl: "Yes, there are. Just like there are left-wingers. I don't judge people by their political beliefs. That may sound strange. The people I associate with are a motley crew and yet there is no violence. My friends have respect for each other just like I respect them."
Rock Hard: So we're talking about people who don't resort to violence when it comes to representing their convictions?
Gaahl: "Exactly. People evolve and accept differences. But now and then you do have to be patient with those you're close to (laughs). Not everybody always knows right away what's best for them. You have to give people leeway to experience things and grow because that how they might change their way of thinking."
Rock Hard: How are your right-wing friends responding to your being gay?
Gaahl: "There has been very little in terms of negative reactions. I'd like to think it's because my friends respect me enough to where that side of me doesn't bother them. If I was another type of guy, the reactions might be more drastic."
Rock Hard: You've been jailed several times. Did any of that have anything to do with your political or sexual background?
Gaahl: "No, absolutely not."
Rock Hard: I'm mentioning it because I forgot to ask you an important question during our last interview. When you talked about that "contract killer" that was out to get you, and whom you injured so badly that you had to go to prison over it, we never even talked about what provoked the attack in the first place. Who had it in for you?
Gaahl: "That was connected to my previous stint in prison. Someone whom I had caused trouble wanted to get revenge on me. But since he didn't want to get his own hands dirty for obvious reasons he hired someone who was supposed to attack me and in fact broke into my house carrying a weapon."
Rock Hard: Can you elaborate on what you mean by "causing trouble?"
Gaahl: "I was attacked in a bar, apparently because I had provoked someone with my appearance or something I said — someone with a reputation of being 'dangerous' himself. It turned into a physical altercation with serious consequences. I ended up in jail but the well-to-do 'victim' who had provoked me got off scot-free."
Rock Hard: Are you safe now from acts of revenge?
Gaahl: "I sure hope so. It makes no sense to be afraid of something you have no influence over anyway. Should it turn dangerous again down the line I'll simply have to deal with the situation."
Rock Hard: Sounds as if you've gotten rid of a lot of muck in your life.
Gaahl: (laughs) "Yeah, you could say that. I'm content all around with my situation right now. I love life at the moment."
Rock Hard: Would you say you're a happy person?
Gaahl: "Oh yes, most definitely."
Rock Hard: It's got to feel great: You are free and no longer have anything to hide.
Gaahl: "That's right. But I've never really hidden anything to begin with. It's just that I was never in love before."
Rock Hard: Never?
Gaahl: "No, not until last year."
Rock Hard: There is a girl who for a time lived with Jenny from Rock Hard in Norway, and she claimed to be your ex-girlfriend.
Gaahl: (laughs) "Then she lied. I was never ever together with anyone until last year."
Rock Hard: How old are you now?
Gaahl: "33."
Rock Hard: And you were a lone wolf up until age 32?
Gaahl: "Yes. I've just now reached puberty!" (laughs)
Rock Hard: Very cool that you talk so openly about these things.
Gaahl: "Well, that's the way it is." (laughs)
Rock Hard: You're a pretty strange bird, if I may say so. Anyone familiar with your image wouldn't think it possibly for you to have such an astute sense of humor.
Gaahl: "Thanks. I'm a strange dude, I know."
Rock Hard: Up until very recently, I had a totally different impression of you — and it wasn't exactly a positive one.
Gaahl: "Well, people tend to draw their own conclusions and create an image where other people are concerned. You always see the character you want to see."
Rock Hard: You sound very content and well balanced indeed. How is that gonna affect GORGOROTH?
Gaahl: "As far as my 'outing' goes — King was more nervous about it beforehand than I myself. He is glad that everybody's been cool about it. As far as the musical aspect is concerned — we've started work on the next album and I can't wait to write the lyrics for it. I already have ideas in my head but normally my lyrics just sort of 'happen.'"
Rock Hard: That's what I was getting at. Aren't you lacking the hatred to write the type of lyrics GORGOROTH is known for? Or are you tackling dark subject matters differently in the future?
Gaahl: "Time will tell. I take the view that you should always be moving forward and not standing still. It's gonna be different for sure but I can't say how exactly. A lot of what happens during the process of writing lyrics stems from the unconscience anyway. That is more honest than conscious planning."
Rock Hard: Isn't it difficult not to fool yourself? How do you know what originates from your unconscience and what comes from your conscience?
Gaahl: "It's difficult to differentiate indeed — but that's what the artistic aspect is all about. And I think I'm pretty well versed in it." (laughs)
Rock Hard: When I look at your overall concept — your provocative show, morbid aesthetics, and intellectual aspirations — I'm heavily reminded of CELTIC FROST. Can you relate to that sentiment?
Gaahl: "Yeah, even though I'm more familiar with the early CELTIC FROST classics, I know what you mean. We're pretty good friends (with them), and I'm gonna sink my teeth deeper into the last CELTIC FROST album as soon as I have some time."
Rock Hard: Martin [Ain] and Tom [Fischer of CELTIC FROST] were part of the reason why we decided to interview GORGOROTH for Rock Hard. They think very highly of you — and we of them. You can't be all that asinine if you have advocates like that.
Gaahl: "I'm happy about that. (laughs) I'm definitely seeing correlations between the two bands as well. We have a similar way of overstepping certain boundaries. I know Tom a little better than Martin but I see parallels between us and both of them."
Rock Hard: You just returned from Mexico, right?
Gaahl: "Yeah. We played two shows there. The fans were unbelievable as was the technical equipment – albeit in a negative sense." (laughs)
Rock Hard: Where do things stand legally right now as far as the name GORGOROTH is concerned?
Gaahl: "I can't say anything about it due to pending litigation. As long as there is no final ruling, both sides will continue to use the name GORGOROTH." (Note: Guitarist Infernus, the last remaining founding member, was fired by Gaahl and King last year but has so far refuses to relinquish the band name).
Rock Hard: Do you have a steady line-up now?
Gaahl: "Yes, we do. We'll make an official announcement shortly — it's gonna shock some people!"
Rock Hard: Positively or negatively?
Gaahl: (laughs) "Positively, as I see it. But I don't know how people are gonna react… It'll definitely be a surprise, and I'm excited about it. What I can confirm is that Frost (SATYRICON, 1349) will be the drummer on the new album. We view him as a full band member even though he doesn't figure in a creative role with us."
Rock Hard: That leaves two open spots in the band….
Gaahl: "Not open, merely unknown. I know, we come off as chaotic but we have everything under control. Believe it or not — there is a plan." (laughs)
Rock Hard: What else you got going on at present other than GORGOROTH?
Gaahl: "Working on an ambient album that's currently being mixed — really interesting stuff, in my opinion. Other than that, I spend a lot of time painting. I've become really creative lately."
Rock Hard: What kind of paintings do you paint?
Gaahl: "Hard to describe. They definitely don't have anything in common with GORGOROTH. People might think that all I'm painting are chopped off heads but that's not the case."
Rock Hard: Then what do you paint? Rob Halford in various motorcycle poses?
Gaahl: "Exactly." (laughs) |

Sebastian Bach Interview
Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach was recently interviewed by Record Collector magazine ( web site) — a publication which the singer has described as "definitely my favorite magazine out of the UK and possibly the world. One of the only magazines I can think of that is truly about music, not gossip, trends, fashion, or nostalgia. One of the only magazines I actually buy due to its focus on collecting all sorts of music and its attention to detail."
An excerpt from Bach's interview with Record Collector follows below.
Record Collector: Is there much unreleased in the archives?
Bach: A lot. Back when we were on tour in SKID ROW, from '89 to '91, the soundman was making DATs of every concert, and we were partyng so much, I was the only one who listened to them and collected them. So when they kicked me out of the band in '96, what they forgot was [laughs] … that I have 400 DAT tapes of everything of us and everybody from BON JOVI to SOUNDGARDEN to Axl and MÖTLEY CRÜE. I've got the only copy of those, not to mention the video archive — Dimebag [ Darrell Abbott of PANTERA] goofing off and pro-shot concert footage — tons of one-of-a-kind tapes from '90/'91, with all sorts of people jamming with us. Those guys kicked me out, but they should know that I've transferred all of it to digital for DVD and preserved the quality — I'm not that much of an asshole! [laughs] JOURNEY put out a 1981 show on DVD and those guys hate each other's guts, but how come they put this shit out? So if they [ SKID ROW] ever want to do that, I'm the guy that has all th footage. Make me an offer!
Record Collector: Do you have any tapes from before SKID ROW?
Bach: Yes. I have a tape of my first beer commercial for radio — Schooner — in 1983. Then the guy who was the engineer on RUSH's "Snakes & Arrows", Rich Chycki, was a guitarist in Toronto in the mid-'80s. Before I joined MADAME X from Detroit, I was playing in Rich's band and those tapes exist in high quality sound. When I left for MADAME X, he got James LaBrie of DREAM THEATER in and told him, "Sing it exactly like this." The album came out as WINTER ROSE, but that material exists with me singing [at] age 16. I was also on "Maple Metal" on Attic, at 14. It got reviewed in Kerrang! and I couldn't even comprehend it.
Record Collector: Do you get involved in limited editions of your releases?
Bach: Yeah. The record company told me "Angel Down" was coming out on vinyl picture disc, and I was like, "What?! How cool is that?!" How ironic that vinyl is the one area taking off now. I have tons and it's all preserved in plastic. I've got THE BEATLES "Yesterday and Today" with the baby dolls, and bootlegs I collected as a teenager, like VAN HALEN "Live in Pasadena". I think record companies are silly not putting out this stuff, instead of all this compilation bullshit. They're fucking nuts! [laughs] SKID ROW best-of? We only had three albums, and you can buy them for five bucks. Assholes! [laughs] |

New Rob Zombie Track In Punisher: War Zone Soundtrack
ROB ZOMBIE's brand new song "War Zone" is available for streaming at this location.
"War Zone" is the first track off the soundtrack release to "Punisher: War Zone" from Marvel Comics' latest film adaptation of fictional vigilante and deadly antihero Frank Castle. The lethal motion picture soundtrack features a powerful collection of A-list rockers including the first new music in thre years from ROB ZOMBIE in addition to heart-pounding songs from rock icons such as SEETHER, SLAYER, SLIPKNOT and RISE AGAINST. The fifteen-track album attacks stores on November 25. The film opens nationwide on December 5.
The original track "War Zone", written for and inspired by the film, contains the kind of raw, throttling energy that has made ROB ZOMBIE a platinum-selling artist. The song will also serve as the first single from the soundtrack. Rob Zombie said, "I love writing music for films, rather than just throwing them an unwanted B side or remix. This track was written exclusively for 'Punisher: War Zone'. A punishing track for a punishing movie."
The record also features SLAYER's 2008 Grammy-winning "Final Six" and current chart-topping singles from SLIPKNOT "Psychosocial" and SEETHER "Fallen". The beatdown doesn't stop there, with a broad mix of new and unreleased music that spans every niche of the rock genre, including unreleased songs by premiere punk group RISE AGAINST and emo scenesters SENSES FAIL. Dan Trapp of SENSES FAIL had this to say: "We are super-excited to be a part of the 'Punisher' legacy… when we heard we were going to be involved, we all threw up in our hands out of excitement."
Adding to the epic soundscape of "Punisher: War Zone" is one lucky winner from the Lionsgate/ Clear Channel "Unsigned Artist Contest" that was hosted last month. The contest attracted over 5,000 bands and millions of listeners. The winner will be announced on October 24 at www.punisherwarzonemusic.com. Lionsgate music president Jay Faires adds, "Teaming up with Clear Channel has been a phenomenal experience. The response to the 'Punisher' contest has been incredible, and we are absolutely thrilled about introducing one of these talented unsigned bands to the world."

Extreme Film Video For New Song Ghost
Reunited Boston hard rockers EXTREME filmed a video for the track "Ghost" on October 23 inside an old church in Massachusetts. Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt came up with the concept and directed the video.

"Saudades de Rock", the new album from EXTREME, sold 6,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 78 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD entered the UK chart at position No. 80.
The band's first studio album in thirteen years, "Saudades de Rock" (pronounced "sow-dodge") was released in the U.S. on August 12 on Open E Records and distributed by Fontana. The European version of the CD, which came out on August 1, includes a bonus track, the "Americocaine" demo from 1985, the very first studio recording of EXTREME.
The iconic rock foursome — vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo — recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. "Saudades de Rock" boasts 13 tracks, including the infectious roar of "Star", the groove-laden, swagger of "King Of The Ladies", a raw funk rock anthem called "Learn To Love", and the expressive ballad "Ghost".
"'Saudades' was always a beautiful word to me," Bettencourt explains about the Portuguese album moniker. "It expresses a longing; an underlying sadness for something or someone that's been missing in your life, and never quite sure if it will ever return. In this case, for us, it's rock and roll. Saudades de Rock."
Gary Cherone adds, "I like how it expresses that longing we've been feeling to play for our fans and be together again."
Open E Records is a new label that is distributed by Fontana. A portion of Open E Records' profits will be donated to Music Drives Us, a foundation created as a way to support music in New England. The foundation also gives scholarship money for individuals who desire to continue their musical education.

Metal Mike Interview
MetalForever.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist "Metal" Mike Chlasciak (HALFORD, PAINMUSEUM, SEBASTIAN BACH). An excerpt from the chat follows below.
MetalForever.com: So Mike, on the Sebastian Bach "Angel Down" album, the band covered an old AEROSMITH classic "Back In The Saddle". Was this a bit of a departure for you?
Chlasciak: Well, it's funny that you mention this. When Roy Z (our producer), came in with an idea of covering "Back In The Saddle" and I heard the original version of the song, I was like, "Is Z out of his mind?" You gotta understand that, if I remember correctly, that song had a 12-string bass and you have all these sounds, whistles, grinds and pops in it and I'm thinking to myself… "Let's see how this one goes," you know. But I remember sitting down with Roy one time in the studio and we looked into the track, I got my routines down and I go — I think I got my head around this. To be honest, I love the way that song came out. And, I think Roy is a fantastic producer for always thinking outside the box. I remember recording the rhythms and finally doubling some choruses for "Back In The Saddle" and thinking that our version has got a slab of really heavy groove in it — its heavy, but at the same time still raw and pissed off kind of like MÖTLEY CRÜE's "Dr. Feelgood"… and then I go, wait a minute — the puzzle is solved! This early AEROSMITH sound is part of the blueprint for that whole U.S. Los Angeles metal. At that time, I went gimme my guitar because I know exactly what to do with it! And, after the rhythms were done, I added some textures by simulating a slide guitar with my Floyd Rose whammy bar and I just played how I play. Later I heard what Axl added to it and what Baz sang on it and I went, "It's done!" It sounds fucking great. I mean, although I am a full on metal lover, I do like different things in music as well, whether it's Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tina Turner or whatever. I think all these things come into play when you record or write as an artist, and it helps you understand music on a broader range. As a kid in high school, I would walk to school listening to MEGADETH's "Peace Sells…But Who's Buying?!" or METALLICA's "Ride The Lightning" and walk back listening to EZO, W.A.S.P., MÖTLEY CRÜE or VINNIE VINCENT INVASION. My peers through so differently about things. You know it was this; if you like METALLICA, you can't like DAVID LEE ROTH or MR. BIG, are you a PRIEST fan or MAIDEN fan. Like you know, why? You can't like both? Why the segregation. And, I was just sick of this type of thinking, you know. I think at the end of the day it gave me a better understanding of music, to be open-minded and listen to and like what I like.
MetalForever.com: You had the priviledge of appearing on albums with some of the greatest vocalists in metal that include Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose. Are there any others you would like to work with? Any memorable moments?
Chlasciak: Man, they are all memorable moments. I have vivid memories of recording guitar solos for the HALFORD "Resurrection" album. You have to understand, making the "Resurrection" album was the most important thing in my life at that time and it will always remain as a special experience for me. But anyways, while making the album Bruce would stop by the studio every so often just to say hey. And, I remember getting ready to do my guitar solos one day and into the control room walk in Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson and they stand behind me and I go, "Are you kidding me?! I'm supposed to play my solos now?!" Haha. It was an honor to hear Bruce sing on the track "The One You Love To Hate" from "Resurrection", it really was. I remember HALFORD playing "The One You Love To Hate" live in London and joining The Metal God on stage were Bruce and Geoff Tate. I'd say that's memorable. Standing on stage next to Rob Halford is an absolute honor. Without any trace of doubt, Rob is The Metal God. Recording Sebastian's "Angel Down" album had some great times, too. It almost had that energy of an artist making their first recording — excitement! Baz was rebuilding things and he was excited about the album. The band played in the same big room at Sound City Studios in California and I would hear Baz go for it in the vocal isolation booth. It was great to hear his determination and performances. The band would play live and cut it "directly to tape" like the old days, except we replaced the 2" machine with hard drives. Then to hear what Axl added to the songs when he did his guest spots, was just … I don't know how to describe it — it was special to hear him on it. I felt wonderful as a musician to have someone like him sing over something I had been a part of. And, you know, I hear Axl's voice and I hear the strength, his delivery and his attitude and it's obvious that Axl Rose has a metal heart. Needless to say, I'd love to opportunity to do something similar again, however small it might be.

Kirk Hammet Interview
Saby Reyes-Kulkarni of The Pitch recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
The Pitch: Looking back to the Black Album, why did you suddenly go for shorter songs? You had three classic albums in a row with winding, involved, progressive songs, and your fanbase up until that time came to you for that.
Kirk Hammett: We were just burned out on it. We wanted to do something that was more groove-oriented and had a little more soul. With the stuff we did in the '80s, a lot of times it was about showing off our chops.
The Pitch: So why the return to form with "Death Magnetic"?
Kirk Hammett: We got tired again. [Laughs.] When we started writing for "Death Magnetic", we found out that the more progressive stuff sounded good again. We hadn't done it for a while, and all of a sudden it just kinda sounded fresh. A lot of it also has to do with the fact that [producer] Rick Rubin said that he wanted to make the ultimate METALLICA album. In his mind, the ultimate METALLICA album would be more along the lines of what we did back in the '80s.
The Pitch: In the 2007 documentary "Get Thrashed", you said, " METALLICA invented thrash metal." I wanted to ask you about EXODUS, who you were playing with first. EXODUS' Gary Holt says that everybody who was there knows what EXODUS' role was.
Kirk Hammett: You know what? [Laughs.] I guess I was just at the center of two storms. If I was still in EXODUS, I would have said that EXODUS invented thrash metal. I said that only because I was in METALLICA at a certain moment in time. There were steps that were being taken, and there's a whole group of musicians who were feeling it. It was a zeitgeist. I would say METALLICA and EXODUS probably simultaneously, ANTHRAX and SLAYER, too — we were all just taking cues from what we heard and what the state of heavy music was at that point. It was something that we all just kinda felt.
The Pitch: After the Napster backlash, how do you look back on the band's attempt to fight downloading?
Kirk Hammett: I'm still against file sharing. I still think people should respect the concept of intellectual property. I don't have a problem with downloading that intellectual property once the people that deserve to be paid do get paid. Technology is a double-edged sword. It's convenient and quick, but we pay a pretty high price for that convenience, that impatience. I would much rather be able to go out and buy a better-sounding CD than a shitty MP3. The whole e-mail and texting thing — I'm not sure if it's really bringing us together as much as it's isolating us. I kind of miss how people used to just call each other up.

A Fuckload Of New Promotional Clips For Chinese Democracy
Sixteen short promotional clips for the long-awaited new GUNS N' ROSES album, "Chinese Democracy", can be viewed below.
A slightly revised track listing for "Chinese Democracy" was posted late last week at BestBuy.com, which will exclusively carry the album in the U.S. starting on November 23. A pre-order page for the long-delayed release was posted at the site on Wednesday (October 15), although the pre-order option was later taken off. The page lists 14 song titles for the record, 11 of which have either been played live or leaked online over the past few years. The Pulse of Radio reports that one of those, "Street of Dreams", was previously known as "The Blues", while three titles, "Scraped", "Sorry" and "Prostitute", have not been heard anywhere.
According to Billboard.com, sources who have heard the album say that it opens with a "blood-curdling Axl Rose scream."
Two different covers will apparently be available, along with CD and vinyl versions. What appears to be one of the covers has been posted at the Best Buy site, showing what seems to be a bicycle with a basket perched on it.
There has still not been an official announcement regarding the November 23 arrival date for the record.
"Chinese Democracy" has been in the works since the mid-'90s, with speculation and mystery surrounding the album's 13-year journey, ever-changing roster of players and spiraling recording costs.

Brian Johnson Interview
AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson recently spoke to Edna Gundersen of USA Today about the band's forthcoming tour in support of the "Black Ice" album.
"At 61, this could be my last shot," Johnson said, but he added that the run-throughs "have been smooth as a gravy sandwich."
"I try to look after my health," he said. "I don't do a 6-mile jog. I might do a half-hour on a bike in the morning."
Johnson expressed amazement at the band's enduring appeal and credited much of its longevity to chemistry and an obsessive focus on music.
"People talk a lot about Angus and Malcolm, but that's not fair," he said. "There's more than two brothers. There are five. Malcolm, our spiritual leader, always told us to be a rock band first and a celebrity way, way after that. Stay below the radar, don't get involved in politics, stop covering yourself in glory on the stages of the world."

Darryl Sterdan of 24 Hours recently conducted an interview with AC/DC singer Brian Johnson. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
24 Hours: Why did the new album [ "Black Ice"] take eight years?
Johnson: Well, after the last one, we did a tour, and then we did a few gigs in Germany with THE [ ROLLING] STONES, and we did the SARS benefit in Toronto and so on, so we were playing a lot. Plus, we changed record companies, which took some time and some pushing and all kinds of nasty stuff. So that took our focus away. But really, I think the reason was that Mal [ Malcolm Young] and Angus [ Young] really wanted something special, something fresh, and they weren't going to be rushed. And I think they came up with it, me son. I think they did a cracking job. I was so happy when I heard these riffs. This was the most fun album I've done in about 15 years. It was just a hoot to do.
24 Hours: Aren't you sick of carrying Angus around on your shoulders? How far have you run over the years with his sweaty crotch on the back of your neck?
Johnson: Me son, it's got to be 50 miles. But at least he's not getting any heavier.
24 Hours: Everybody says Malcolm is really the boss. Is that true? Is the band a democracy or a dictatorship?
Johnson: It's a democracy, up to a certain point. And Malcolm wouldn't thank me for saying he's the man. But he is. Well, him and Angus. It's their band. They started it. It's their puppy. And they've made decisions through the years that have kept the band the way it is, kept it clean and pure. And there's not many bands that have really not sold out in any way, shape or form.
24 Hours: For 30 years, Malcolm has been standing stage right of the drums, with Cliff [ Williams] on the left. If they switched sides, would it all fall apart?
Johnson: Definitely. If Cliff and Mal changed sides, it would be the end of AC/DC. They wouldn't know what to do. The band would split. End of story.
24 Hours: What songs are you going to play on tour? There must be a dozen you have to do. But are there others you particularly want to do?
Johnson: Well, we have to do "Thunderstruck", "Back in Black", "You Shook Me All Night Long", "TNT", "Whole Lotta Rosie", "Let There be Rock". And we're gonna do five songs off the new album. As for older stuff, I'd like to do "What's Next to the Moon". I like "Gone Shootin'" too. That would be a good one.

Tony Iommi Interview
BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN AND HELL guitarist Tony Iommi recently spoke to Guitar World magazine about his 40 years in music, and one of the subjects broached by writer Chris Gill was the fact that a handful of BLACK SABBATH songs recorded in the band's early days when they were still known as EARTH — including "The Rebel", "When I Came Down" and "Song For Jim" — have yet to be released to this day.
According to Iommi, "We didn’t write those songs. They were written by a chap named Norman Haines. At the time we were managed by Jim Simpson, who was a local Birmingham guy. He insisted that we record these songs that his friend Norman had written. We just wanted to play, so we recorded them. We wanted to write our own songs and make our own record, but this was just an initial effort. We had never been in a recording studio in our lives before that. It was a very basic studio. Even back then we never really wanted those recordings to see the light of day. Those songs sound nothing remotely like BLACK SABBATH."

Stay Hungry! Again!
TWISTED SISTER is planning a 25th-anniversary re-release of its classic 1984 album "Stay Hungry" featuring loads of bonus material, including one brand new track that the band is set to record later this month. "There's gonna be two discs — it's gonna be the original album remastered, and it's gonna have all the outtakes, including about 15 songs that we never finished; all two verses and a chorus," guitarist Jay Jay French revealed during an October 10, 2008 appearance on Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM. "In much the same way that everybody's throwing the kitchen sink in these historical records — we're gonna have that — plus we're gonna have a brand new song that we're recording in two weeks."
Back in 2004, TWISTED SISTER released "Still Hungry" — a re-recorded and expanded version of "Stay Hungry". "Still Hungry" — which was produced by Mark Mendoza, a longtime producer/engineer in addition to his bass guitar duties with TWISTED SISTER — gave the New York-based band a chance to make "Stay Hungry" the way it was first envisioned. "Stay Hungry" sold more than 6 million copies worldwide, but it didn't sound the way TWISTED SISTER wanted it to sound.
"'Still Hungry' is 'Stay Hungry - The Way It Ought to Be'," Jay Jay French stated at the time. "It has an ultra-heavy sound, which is the way we wanted 'Stay Hungry' in the first place. But at that time rock records had a thin, very midrange kind of sound and so 'Stay Hungry' was recorded very lightly. We battled Atlantic Records and producer Tom Werman about it, but we lost.
"These re-recordings are faithful to the original arrangements but they sound much heavier," he continued. "There are an additional seven tracks included — obscure songs from our club days but never officially recorded then. On two of these songs, 'Never Say Never' and 'Blastin' Fast & Loud', we used the original drum tracks that A.J. [Pero] recorded. These songs were meant to be included on 'Stay Hungry' but were never finished. 'Heroes Are Hard to Find' was on the soundtrack of Dee's [Snider's] movie 'Strangeland'."
Six of the seven bonus tracks on "Still Hungry" previously appeared, mostly in raw form, on archival TWISTED SISTER albums. Demos of "Come Back" and "Rock N Roll Saviors" were included on the 1999 Spitfire Records collection "Club Daze Volume I: The Studio Sessions". The completed 2001 studio recordings of "Never Say Never" and "Blastin' Fast & Loud" (with Pero's original 1984 drum tracks) kicked off 2001's Spitfire release "Club Daze Volume II: Live in the Bars", which also featured vintage live versions of "You Know I Cry", "Plastic Money" and "Come Back" (one of just a few songs to appear on both "Club Daze" volumes).
Italian news blog Musica Metal uploaded video footage (see below) of TWISTED SISTER performing the song "The Price" (which originally appeared on the "Stay Hungry" album) at the first edition of the Rock Of Ages festival, which was held on September 13, 2008 in Milan, Italy.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Trailer
A trailer for the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica game, which is apparently included on Guitar Hero: World Tour, can be viewed below.
When Guitar Hero: World Tour arrives at the end of this month, METALLICA fans will be able to play all 10 songs from the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", on the game as downloadable content. Among those playing along will be METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich, who bought the game for his kids and told The Pulse of Radio why he's now a fan himself. "It works on a couple of fronts," he said. "It works on the front of sharing the experiences with your kids. It works on exposing your kids to music. And it also helps Dad a little bit, because all of a sudden Dad's in the video game, and that helps balance the perception of Dad when Dad spends a lot of time talking about doing homework and eating vegetables and all this other stuff, you know what I mean?"
Guitar Hero: World Tour is due out on October 26. It contains more than 80 songs from METALLICA, VAN HALEN, MICHAEL JACKSON, OZZY OSBOURNE, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, COLDPLAY, STING, and dozens more artists.
METALLICA also created a special "extended" version of a "Death Magnetic" track called "Suicide and Redemption" for playing on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. All 10 songs from "Death Magnetic" are available as downloadable content for Guitar Hero III.
While a rumored all-METALLICA edition of Guitar Hero has yet to be confirmed by either the band or the game's publisher, Lars Ulrich himself hinted that the game will be out sometime next year.
METALLICA will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona. Ulrich told Billboard that the band intends to play at least five new songs a night in its set, rotating them so that all the tracks from "Death Magnetic" will be performed live.

Angus Young Interview
Guitarist Angus Young of Australian hard rock legends AC/DC has told Kathy McCabe of News.com.au he remains in awe of his brother Malcolm's (the other half of AC/DC guitar duo) natural talent.
"My ambition was just to be able to play," he said
"(Growing up) Malcolm was always way ahead of me with it, he did it so naturally but for me, it took some learning to get it and get better. I'm still in amazement. Malcolm's unique in that he has that sound, that style.
"Even when we were recording [ 'Black Ice'], [producer] Brendan O'Brien was looking at Malcolm — not anyone else — and he was in amazement, just watching him, just watching that hand.
"Once when we were in London and Keith Richards said to come on down to one of their shows — we'd played some gigs for them — and he was talking about playing and he asked me if I ever f...ed up.
"And I told him 'I'm not a f...in' robot, everyone can screw up. But I've got one saving grace, Keith. I've got Malcolm.'
"He knows what Malcolm's got goin' and he knows it's no easy thing to do because it's the same as what he does.
"It ain't no easy thing to do, it's rare."

Playbill.com reports that the 1980s-set musical "Rock of Ages" — starring "American Idol" finalist Constantine Maroulis — officially opens at Off-Broadway's New World Stages October 16. Previews began October 1.
Featuring a book by Chris D'Arienzo, the musical, press notes state, is "fueled by high-octane '80s rock — from the anthems that defined an era to the power ballads that lit up arenas everywhere." Expect songs by JOURNEY, BON JOVI, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, POISON, ASIA and WHITESNAKE.
The producers describe the musical as such: "It's the late 1980s and the final countdown is on for a legendary Hollywood rock club facing its demise at the hands of eager developers. When a young rocker hungry for his big break and a small town girl chasing her dreams land on the scene at this infamous venue, how far will ambition drive them? And will it be lights out for the club and all the regulars and rockers who have made it their home?"

BestBuy.com has revealed the track listing and what appears to be the official cover art (see below) for GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy". The effort, which will reportedly be released on Sunday, November 23 via an exclusive deal with Best Buy, will be made available on CD and vinyl format. Furthermore, fans have a choice between three different CD and LP covers, although exact details have not yet been revealed.

Angus Young Interview
Telegraph.co.uk recently spoke to AC/DC guitarist Angus Young about the band's forthcoming album, "Black Ice", due out on October 20.
"All you need to know about AC/DC is this — we stopped growing musically when we were 17," Young said. "When you’re 17, you write songs that you hope will appeal to other 17-year-olds. And we still write songs for 17-year-olds."
Young has a "never-complain, never-explain" attitude to both the band's image and their eye-watering record sales.
"There's a lot of nonsense spoken about music today," he said. "For us it really is quite simple. We began by playing Chuck Berry covers. Every so often we would sneak in one of our own songs. We used to look at each other at the end of our own songs and say, 'I don't think they noticed.' So then we put a few more originals in. We went from the bars to slightly bigger venues and then over the years to arenas and all of that. One day, you look around and you find that you’ve sold 200 million albums."

F5 Cover "Nailed To The Gun"
F5 — the Phoenix-based band featuring former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson, ex-SICK SPEED vocalist Dale Steele, guitarists Steve Conley and John Davis, and ex-MEGADETH drummer Jimmy DeGrasso — has uploaded photos from the video shoot for its cover of FIGHT's "Nailed To The Gun". Check them out on the group's MySpace blog.
F5 has posted its cover of FIGHT's "Nailed To The Gun" on the F5 MySpace page. The group says, "the song was recorded as a b-side during the sessions of the new F5 album, 'The Reckoning', and will be available shortly on iTunes. The track is not part of the regular retail version of 'The Reckoning' full-length CD."
A four-minute video clip of Ellefson talking about the track with on the "Headbanger's Heaven" radio show with host Mike Gaube on 93.3 KDKB in Phoenix, Arizona can be viewed below.
"The Reckoning" was released on August 19 through OarFin Distribution. The follow-up to 2005's "A Drug for All Seasons" was produced by Ryan Greene at his Crush Recording facility in Scottsdale, Arizona.
F5 called in Ellefson's longtime rhythm section cohort Jimmy DeGrasso to play drums on the new album following the departure of original F5 drummer Dave Small.

Judas Priest Interview
An 11-minute audio interview with vocalist Rob Halford and guitarist Glenn Tipton of British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST conducted by Norway's Metal Express Radio during this past summer's Metal Masters tour has been posted online at this location.
JUDAS PRIEST's new double-disc concept album, "Nostradamus", has sold more than 90,000 copies in the United States since its June 17 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD shifted 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. This marks the band's highest-ever chart position in the U.S. In Canada, the CD opened at position No. 9 after shifting close to 4,000 units.
New Girlschool Release Dates Change
The European release date (except for Germany and Austria) of the 30th-anniversary album from the veteran British all-female hard rock band GIRLSCHOOL, "Legacy", has been pushed back to November 3 from the previously announced October 27. The CD will be made available in Germany and Austria on October 24 and in North America on November 4 via Wacken Records/ SPV. "Legacy" will feature a plethora of special guests, including Tony Iommi ( BLACK SABBATH), Ronnie James Dio ( BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, DIO), Lemmy and Phil Campbell from MOTÖRHEAD, "Fast" Eddie Clarke ( FASTWAY, ex- MOTÖRHEAD) and a couple of members of TWISTED SISTER. Even the group's original guitarist Kelly Johnson, who died last year, can be heard on the opener "Everything 's The Same" with a special ghost appearance!

Kelly Johnson passed away on July 15, 2007 after a six-year battle with cancer of the spine. Along with Johnson, the classic lineup of GIRLSCHOOL included Kim McAuliffe (guitar), Enid Williams (bass) and Denise Dufort (drums). The band was an integral and major force in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, beginning with the release of its debut album, "Demolition" (1980), and continuing with the follow-up efforts, "Hit 'n' Run" (1981) and "Screaming Blue Murder" (1982).
