Slash Solo Project Well Under Way
Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash recently spoke to the Artisan News Service about his upcoming solo album which is tentatively expected sometime next year.
"I'm just at the very tail end of doing demos for it right now," he said. "So, I'll probably have about four more songs left to record in demo form and then in January go into the studio and actually start recording. Schedule permitting, because I've got VELVET REVOLVER stuff if we find a singer. So, it's sort of a juggling act at the moment."
Although Slash didn't want to jinx anything by revealing any vocalists as of yet, it is rumored that his friends Lenny Kravitz, Sebastian Bach and Alice Cooper have initially committed to the project.

Alice Cooper Interview
Johnson Cummins of the Montreal Mirror recently conducted an interview with legendary rocker Alice Cooper. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Montreal Mirror: What were those early days in Detroit in the late '60s like, playing with the MC5, STOOGES, MITCH RYDER and so on?
Alice: Detroit at that time was by far the healthiest music scene going. When we first went to Detroit, we had never heard of the MC5 or the STOOGES. We went on after the STOOGES at this festival and when I saw Iggy, I just realized that I had found some competition. Detroit audiences would only respond to bands that had attitude, offered no excuses and played it loud. Every week, we would play bills like STOOGES, MC5, ALICE COOPER and THE WHO at the Grande, and even at that time we realized that these were some of the greatest rock 'n' roll shows that would ever happen. Everybody was really competitive too. If Keith Moon had 31 drums, Neal [ Smith, ex-drummer] would make sure he had 32.
Montreal Mirror: It does seem rare that the STOOGES and your current show can still deliver after 40 years.
Alice: When people call me and Iggy dinosaurs, I just tell them we're carnivores because we will take on any band full of 20-year-olds right now and blow them off the stage. I'm not even basing that on content or showmanship, but just on energy alone.
Montreal Mirror: Do you ever get pissed that so many people have ripped off your image and theatrics, and continue to do so?
Alice: When Marilyn [ Manson] came along, I thought, if he was playing hard rock, it was way too close, but he didn't really. I mean, I respect what he does, but I still think it's a little funny — gee, a guy with a girl's name wearing make-up, I wish I would've thought of that. When I first met him, it was like Bela Lugosi meeting Boris Karloff.

New Led Zeppelin Boxset
LED ZEPPELIN first took flight 40 years ago this summer. And while the song may remain the same, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham forever changed rock 'n' roll. To celebrate the band's anniversary and its immeasurable influence on popular music and culture, Atlantic Records/Rhino Entertainment will release on November 4 a limited-edition CD box set. This Japanese import contains all 10 of the quartet's albums in mini-LP replicas with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves.
The mini-LP replicas boxed set includes:
* Led Zeppelin (1969)
* Led Zeppelin II (1969)
* Led Zeppelin III (1970)
* Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
* Houses of the Holy (1973)
* Physical Graffiti (1975)
* Presence (1976)
* The Song Remains the Same (1976)
* In Through the Out Door (1979)
* Coda (1982)
The sleeves included in the boxed set feature the original LP album artwork released in the U.K., including the original printing of the group's debut, which used turquoise ink on the cover for the band's name and the Atlantic Records logo. Later printings used orange ink, making the first a rare collector's item. The orange sleeve is included with the boxed set as a bonus.
"Led Zeppelin III" features the gatefold sleeve with the rotatable laminated card disc, while "Physical Graffiti", which was nominated for a Grammy Award for best album package, features the interchanging window illustrations from the original LP jacket that included four covers made up of two inners, a middle insert cover and an outer cover.
Additionally, the set includes all six covers released for "In Through the Out Door", LED ZEPPELIN's final studio album. Nominated for a Grammy Award for best album package, the "In Through the Out Door" covers feature different photos of the same bar scene taken from different perspectives.

Tony Iommi Interview
Chris Gill of Guitar World magazine conducted an interview with BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi for the publication's holiday issue cover story. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Guitar World: How old were you when you started playing?
Iommi: I was probably about 12. I played accordion before that. Everyone else in my family played accordion, so I got one as well. In those days you used to just sit in your room and you didn't know what to do, so I learned to play accordion. From there I moved on to different instruments, and I eventually discovered the guitar.
Guitar World: Was it a challenge to find a decent left-handed guitar?
Iommi: It was a big challenge trying to find any decent guitar, let alone a left-handed one. In England, the only ones you could find then were very cheap. If you wanted a left-handed guitar, you had to order one from a catalog and then wait three months for it to show up. A few years after I started playing, I was lucky enough to come across a left-handed Fender Stratocaster that somebody who worked in a shop had tucked away and told me about.
Guitar World: It's fascinating how the factory accident led to you tuning down your guitar to make it more comfortable to play, but at the same time it also made what you played on the guitar sound heavier.
Iommi: Everything I did was to make it more comfortable for me, first and foremost. It used to hurt a lot to play because my fingertips were very sensitive. If my plastic fingertips ever came off, which did happen one time, my fingers would be sliced right open by the strings and there would be blood everywhere. I really had to work with my guitar setup so I could be able to play. There were some limitations, but I had to try to get over it. That's how I came up with all of these other things, such as a 24-fret neck and lighter strings, so I could do more. But it really helped us get the sound we were looking for.

ACDC Comment on New Album
AC/DC members Angus Young (guitar) and Brian Johnson (vocals) recently spoke to UK's The Sun about the band's forthcoming album, "Black Ice", due out October 20. "It had to be representative of how we are," Angus says of the new CD. "We had other songs but they weren't right. Every one of the 15 tracks on 'Black Ice', you will say, 'That is AC/DC.'"
For "Black Ice" they teamed up with producer and fan Brendan O'Brien, who said "I'd missed AC/DC and wanted the same band back."
Angus adds: "I was impressed by him because he is a musician first and has great production skills. We told him to be brutal. Critics can shoot us full of arrows but I don't worry about it. When we started, we never had great reviews. I can show you some of them, they were never pretty. We were called colonial hicks, the Chunder From Down Under, and told we should be on the first boat home."
Brian credits working with Brendan as an important factor in the making of the album. He says: " Brendan was fantastic. We hadn't met him before so there's a little awkwardness when you first get in the studio with a new guy because he's butting into your little gang. But, by Christ, after five minutes with this guy we could see how wonderful he was. He would never call you by your first name but by both names. He goes (puts on an American accent), ' Brian Johnson — are you ready to sing?' Well, yeah, sure I am Brendan. He goes, 'OK, let's go down there, see what you got, big boy.' Then looking at me, he said, ' Brian Johnson, you don't like singing in studios do ya?' and I said, 'No, I frickin' hate it'. He said, 'What's wrong?' I said, 'It's the buttons, it's the microphone hanging down, it's the headphones and then it's the 123 and sing.' So, he said, 'Just give me a night to think about it.' The next day, I come in and he said, 'OK, this is the room you're gonna sing in'. I went, 'But this is the office behind the reception desk in the studio.' He said, 'Yeah, well you said you didn't like to be alone.' And so he put a couple of speakers and a little mixing desk in there and gave me this huge microphone, this big old Shure 56, which weighed about seven pounds and he said, 'OK, let's rock.' He played the backing track the boys had done the night before and I started singing...and the receptionist resigned immediately. The receptionist, the poor little girl, she got the shock of her life and she had a German Shepherd dog which started howling. I don't know if he was joining in or he was protesting about the whole thing."

New Slayer Song And DVD Planned
California thrash kings SLAYER will perform their classic 1986 album "Reign In Blood" in its entirety on October 30 at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, England during the band's "The Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" European tour. The following night's performance at the same venue will feature a different set and will be filmed for an upcoming DVD.
In addition to SLAYER, "The Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" features TRIVIUM, MASTODON and AMON AMARTH. The UK portion of the tour is co-headlined by SLAYER and TRIVIUM, with SLAYER closing all shows. The mainland Europe portion is headlined by SLAYER, with TRIVIUM as "special guest."
Fans who attend any of the upcoming European "Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" dates, will receive a new SLAYER song via an exclusive download card that will also include special material from the entire tour's lineup — SLAYER, MASTODON, TRIVIUM and AMON AMARTH. The download card, along with a limited edition "Unholy Alliance Tour" clothing patch, will be given away free only to ticket holders when they arrive at their local venue the night of the show.
The new SLAYER song is being recorded as you read this, as SLAYER has just entered a Los Angeles-area studio to begin recording the new album. More info on the free song and new album will be announced shortly. In addition, TRIVIUM's "Kirisute Gomen" from their upcoming album "Shogun" (released September 30), and "Guardians of Asgaard", a new gem from AMON AMARTH's "Twilight of the Thunder God" (released September 30), will also be part of the download package. MASTODON opted to do something a little different for their contribution to the tour download — the band will take fans into the recording studio for a first-look and listen to the making of their upcoming album. Plus, a live-in-concert SLAYER performance filmed at the band's 2007 San Diego Sports Arena show will be included in the "Unholy Alliance Tour" download package.
New Greatest Package From Queen
EMI has set a November 17 release date for "Queen: The Singles Collection Volume 1", a project 35 years in the making and spanning no less than sixteen albums; from the debut LP, "Queen", in 1973, to the last project with Freddie Mercury, "Made In Heaven", in 1995, and beyond. This box, the first of four, kicks off with the first single, "Keep Yourself Alive", and runs through to "Don't Stop Me Now" from 1979. Box 2 will continue the story into the mid 1980s, and so on. Ultimately, the four boxes will offer every one of QUEEN's singles to have made the top 40 (except "Keep Yourself Alive" which is included because it was the first-ever single).
On July 6, 1973, EMI released the first QUEEN single, "Keep Yourself Alive". In the UK it is the first and only track to be taken from the band's debut album, "Queen". The record attracts some interest in England but gets little airplay, and so fails to appear in the singles chart. EMI's promotion team are given feedback from the radio programmers that the song doesn't fit into their playlists, because, apparently, "It takes too long to happen" — presumably referring to its 30-second guitar intro (now widely regarded as one of its most intriguing features!). In order to ensure the same excuse is not offered next time around, in crafting the band's second single, "Seven Seas Of Rhye" (from "Queen II"), the band decide to make everything happen in the opening seconds… "Everything, including the kitchen sink," as guitarist Brian May would later quip. Evidently, it works; this time the single picks up immediate airplay and charts in the first week of release: in February 1974 QUEEN achieve their first UK and worldwide hit.
From this moment on, QUEEN hit singles become a virtual certainty, with the release of each successive album, each one musically a departure from the last, and, significantly, featuring compositions from all four band members. QUEEN is to date the only group whose members have all written No. 1 hits around the world.
Packaged in a flip top box the 13 CD singles feature a selection of faithfully reproduced cover artwork from around the world.
CD1:
1. A. Keep Yourself Alive
2. B. Son And Daughter

Chinese Democracy Coming Out Next Month?
According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy" (Geffen/Interscope) finally has a release date. The CD will hit all Best Buy stores, where it is an exclusive, on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, November 23, giving it a full seven days on sale before entering the chart on December 2. Best Buy's sales week runs from Sunday through Saturday night.
GUNS manager Andy Gould reportedly told 900 Best Buy employees at "vendor convention" held by Best Buy last month in Dallas that a new GN'R song called "If The World" will play under the closing credits of "Body of Lies", the new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe due out on October 10. That news was confirmed online at film web sites whose representatives had attended a press screening of the flick. "If The World" will not appear on the film's soundtrack album.
"If The World" features the guitar work of Robin Finck and Buckethead, who have both since departed GUNS N' ROSES.
Another new GN'R song, called "Shackler's Revenge", appears on the Rock Band 2 video game.
"Chinese Democracy" has been more than 13 years in the making, with every original member of GUNS N' ROSES except for frontman Axl Rose long since gone from the lineup.

New Museum For MEtal!
For too long, the residents of Birmingham, UK have failed to celebrate what is rightfully theirs — to claim the city as the home of heavy metal. Now, 40 years after the term "heavy metal" was coined, it's time to start celebrating!
The city of Birmingham has spawned arguably some of the most influential bands of all time — bands who defined genres and influenced generations. To celebrate this, art and music promoters Capsule are launching a new project named "Home of Metal" with the aim of creating the first digital archive of music, memorabilia and more, to tell the story of this city's unique musical heritage.
Along with such legends as BLACK SABBATH, JUDAS PRIEST and LED ZEPPELIN, Earache Records' very own early signings NAPALM DEATH and GODFLESH will be featured in this special tribute to metal and the place where it all started.
"Home of Metal" will launch at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Saturday, October 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., where rare artefacts from the early days of NAPALM DEATH's and GODFLESH's careers will be exhibited. Fans are invited to come along with memorabilia and share their personal experiences of the bands, all of which will go towards the new digital archive. Further open days will take place on Thursday, November 6 at New Art Gallery in Walsall and Saturday, February 7 at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Each open day will be hosted by Kerrang! Radio DJ Johnny Doom, accompanied by special guests from the music industry, and entrance for the events is free!

Slash Interview
Erin Broadley of L.A. Weekly conducted an interview with former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash on Tuesday, October 7 inside a parked Gibson tour bus behind Sam Ash Music in Hollywood, California. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
L.A. Weekly: You've said about band dynamics that you don't think there needs to be volatile chemistry in a band to create good music. For the solo album, without having a domineering or problematic frontman to deal with, is that opening up doors for you?
Slash: Sitting around thinking about stuff every so often, I realize that where I get the most inspiration is when the guys that you're working with... it's like being with a woman... you have this energy. When you have a lot of negative stuff going on it just completely depletes the creative process. It's nice to be able to do a solo record and do whatever the fuck I want.
L.A. Weekly: I interviewed Dave Mustaine [MEGADETH] awhile back at Guitar Center Sessions and he sang your praises but then said, "Buckethead [former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist] is probably twice as good a guitar player as me and Slash combined, and can stand having fried chicken rubbed up against his face all night for a couple of hours."
Slash: Well, that is actually true. Anybody who knows me knows that technically I couldn't play my way out of a paper bag. [Laughs] Or a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket, for that matter. I manage to do what it is I do based on a certain kind of feel and sound. I'm getting better at it but I've never been what you'd call a technical guitar player so he's totally right [laughs].

Lars Ulrich Interview
Tom Trakas of Chicago's now-defunct Midwest Metal magazine conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich on September 5, 2008. A few excerpts from the chat, which can be found on Trakas' None But My Own blog, follow below.
None But My Own: I'm sure at certain points in METALLICA's life you've been completely overwhelmed with press, where are you in 2008 in regards to promoting "Death Magnetic"?
Lars: Generally, because we've been touring all summer, [when we're out] we try to keep it to about two to three hours per day because any more than that then it starts to affect the show. But back in the '90s we used to go on these crazy fucking promo trips where you'd spend like two weeks in Europe or the Far East or wherever. While you're there, you'd do like eight to ten hours a day for, like I said two or three weeks straight. That would drive you fucking crazy because you'd be sitting there and literally [in the middle of an interview] you couldn't remember if the point you were about to make, whether you already said it to that guy or to the guy a half an hour ago (laughing)! It's been crazy though, we've got some shows coming up next week so we've been rehearsing and while we're doing that we're trying to keep it to a few hours a day. I did do a full day in Copenhagen which was like, eight to ten hours or so but we haven't done any of the full-on things, I suppose we're just trying to preserve our sanity, but it sure feels like at any time it can go!
None But My Own: Back after the success of 1991's self-titled "Black" album there was a cover story in Issue #38 of Classic Rock magazine, it had a photo of you and the caption was something like " Lars Ulrich, this man simply did not want to settle for being the 'next' IRON MAIDEN"…
Lars: (Laughing)
None But My Own: But my thing is, you had the balls to actually dream that dream, and more or less set this goal for your band and sonofabitch if it didn't happen.
Lars: I gotta tell ya, man, that's a little far-fetched, I mean if someone would've told me in 1981 or '82 that maybe one day we could be equals or even in their shadows (pause) listen, IRON MAIDEN is a different generation. I'll always look up to IRON MAIDEN because I grew up looking up to IRON MAIDEN. The rest of all that is up to the other people to figure the rest out. Like I said, I'll always look up to IRON MAIDEN, I had IRON MAIDEN posters on my wall growing up. Talk about bands holding a place in your heart, IRON MAIDEN holds a very special place in my heart. Yes, we've been fortunate enough to, at least in America, to have bigger numbers or whatever but if you or anyone would've told me in 1981 when James and I started this band that one day we might be able to be mentioned in the same breath as IRON MAIDEN, it would've blown our minds. We were not as goal oriented as the press in England tagged us to be, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Maybe later, by the time you could sense that whatever it was that we were doing was kind of working and turning people on, we're talking about the late '80s. But when we started? We couldn't fathom any of this and we simply did not have such goals. When we started it was drink some beers or some Goldschläger or Schnapps or whatever horrible shit we were drinking and get together to play our favorite heavy metal songs. The first six months the band was together we didn't even write any songs! I mean we had "Hit The Lights" and then the next ten songs we had were all covers, it wasn't until "Jump In The Fire" with ( Dave) Mustaine, that's when we thought, "OK, it's kinda fun writing your own songs." (laughs) Those first few whatever was just about having a good time and sweating it out and banging into some shit. A few years later, there was a turning point and you may have heard me talk about this before, but there's a few turning points for METALLICA that can be looked at upon and this was one of them. I remember the last date of the Ozzy tour and this would be James' birthday, so that's August 3, 1986 in Hampton, Virginia, and our manager, Cliff Burnstein, came down from New York for the last show. So we're all sitting there in the back of the bus and he said, "You've now sold enough records and you've made enough money to go and buy houses." We'd been on the Ozzy tour, at that point for five months. All of us, band and crew on one bus, drinking twelve hours a day, fucking, just living every crazy fantasy about girls and heavy metal and being on the road. We were completely blissfully ignorant to what was going on, you know on that side of it. I remember Cliff [ Burton] sitting there and going, "Fuuucccckkk, I can buy a house," and the rest of us were, I mean the rest of didn't want to buy a house — we wanted to stay on tour (laughing)! We didn't want to go home! So yeah, I remember that day because it was like, "Whoa, you mean you can actually make money doing this? You can buy a house and buy shit?" And this was what? Five years into it? Then we did the VAN HALEN thing in the summer [ Monsters of Rock in 1988] and then all fall we did Europe and then we came back to the States to start in November of 1988. We had AC/DC's production manager, Jake Berry, and we had a real stage show and we were playing the arenas and they booked two nights at Long Beach Arena and I seriously didn't think we could even sell one out, but we sold both out and that was another turning point. It was like, not only can you make enough money to buy a house, but you could make enough money to buy a big fucking house (laughs)!! But the first six years or so was ignorant bliss, four nerdy dudes out there banging away, having a lot of fun. But "Justice" was when we actually had to get it together as we were the headliners and we had a two-hour show to play every night, but you know after that it just kept building and all of a sudden you're making records with Bob Rock. But man, as far as IRON MAIDEN is concerned, I'm a fanboy of IRON MAIDEN, always will be. We did a few shows with them in Spain back in 1988 and it was us, ANTHRAX and IRON MAIDEN and it was like, "Fuck, we get to play with IRON MAIDEN," and we got a chance to hang back at the hotel and party with them. Dude it was super-cool. I'm super-psyched that they're still out there and kicking major fucking ass all over the world. I got to see them at Long Beach Arena four or five months ago and it was awesome! Steve Harris, I swear to god, I met Steve Harris for the first time in 1981 and it was the last show they ever played with Paul Di'Anno in Copenhagen, Denmark at a place the size of your living room. Steve Harris, when I saw them back in February of this year, he's the exact same guy, the exact same guy as the guy I met back in '81 except he's got longer hair now! How many dudes that are 50 years old have hair down to their ass? I mean why can't I grow my hair, what's up with that (laughs)?!
None But My Own: In your book [2004's] "So What!: The Good, The Mad, and The Ugly" in the Cliff tribute section, you write "I wish I could spend some time with Cliff in your current state of mind." please elaborate.
Lars: Sure. I think it would be interesting to sit here with kids and obviously twenty-seven years of doing this and have a slightly healthier outlook on life as well as a less narcissistic outlook. More open-minded, less linear or one track minded and all this stuff, so it'd be interesting to share some of that with him now. It would be very interesting to see what he would have contributed to some of the wackier paths METALLICA has gone on musically. He was so all over the place, very hard to pin point musically. He was very open to different and fucked up shit and I'm pretty sure he would've thought playing with the San Francisco Symphony would be way cool! I'm pretty sure he would've got off on the pummeling aggression of "St. Anger" but I'm not so sure he would necessarily agreed with the way it was kind of put together on a computer, but the naked aggression of that record, I do think he would've dug. He would have probably wanted a few more melodic elements on it, but in some ways he was quite contradictory, he was all about a lot of melody and stuff but at the same time "Damage Inc." was one of his favorite songs. So there was a lot of opposing energies going on and it would be great to just share with him the nuttiness that's going on right now.
None But My Own: Are you still the obsessive METALLICA collector you once were?
Lars: Increasingly less, but I do try to the best of my ability but at one point and we're talking a few years ago, it got so big it became difficult to handle. I have maybe the first one-hundred bootlegs that came out but during the "Black" album when we allowed everyone to start taping the shows it just became too much. I have most of the official stuff, but again it's hard to manage that too. You have to call the office and make sure you get two copies of the Spanish thing with the poster that's a different poster than the Portuguese one, so yeah it's a little much. I will tell you this, I have everything up until the mid-'90s, then you start having kids and stuff and you almost have no choice but to ease up. (laughing) I still have twenty-five, unopened "$5.98 Garage Days…" in the original long boxes, still shrink wrapped, so when the whole thing falls flat on its face, I can start eBay-ing those!

Ohh Ohh I have to add this to Joe's post..
Pete Alander, from the Steel Mill site did the imaging for Yngwie On his website and latest album.. go take a look.......... Pete YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bazooka Joe from Sunday, October 05, 2008 4:06:15 PM) | | Bazooka Joe wrote: | | Yngwie Interview
Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited recently conducted an interview with legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Classic Rock Revisited: The first thing we need to talk about is "Perpetual Flame". This album sounds more live than you have for a long time.
Yngwie: All the stars aligned for this album. We made this record completely different than any record I have ever made. I have my own studio, so I have the luxury of doing it whenever I want. In the old days, you would spend five grand a day in the studio and it was serious pressure. Normally, I just write the songs while I am noodling on my guitar when I am upstairs watching television. I would then get Patrick [Johansson] to do the live drums and I would write the bass and the guitar and whatever. On this particular instance, the songs were taking shape, so I went in the studio with Patrick and we did thirty songs, and I went on the road and forgot about it. I came back from tour, listened to it and picked out the songs that were really good. I put on some guitar and bass and then I went on tour again. I was in Istanbul and I was hanging out with some guys who were playing these strings and I had them add a string section. I have my laptop with me on tour with the backing tracks and ProTools on it. Normally, I start and finish an album right away, but this one took a long time, and that is a big difference. When I came back from Russia, I was listening to the songs "Death Dealer" and "Four Horseman" and I knew that the singer I had was not going to cut it for what I was hearing in my head. So I brought in Ripper [Tim "Ripper" Owens]. He was in another band and he was leaving that band. He came down to Miami and he sang a couple of songs to just feel it out, and it was a no-brainer because it sounded so fucking good. I went back on tour to Germany and then came back and he sang some more. Being the songwriter, the producer, and the arranger, it is actually hard to keep a distance and a good perspective on things. So it was actually really good for me to go away from it for a while and come back. It was also a great thing to bring in Roy Z to mix it. He came in like an outsider and he was very cool. I produced and engineered the whole thing. I miked up the drums and the whole nine yards. It was cool; I liked it. I have always been involved in that, but I have also always had an engineer there. I am getting better at it so I was confident enough that I could do it.
Classic Rock Revisited: How did you get Roy Z involved?
Yngwie: I needed someone to mix. I know K.K. Downing from PRIEST and he told me to check this guy out, so I did. He came in and goes, "Hey let's try this" and he throws an eight thousand dollar compressor on a snare drum. I go, "What the fuck are you doing that for?" Then I hear it and I go, "Fuck, that really sounds good." I have all this shit lying around and half the time I don't even know where it is. I learned a lot from Roy.
Classic Rock Revisited: Roy has made the last two PRIEST records sound awesome. Roy has an ear for heavy metal.
Yngwie: He really makes everything stand out. He was like, "We should do it with ProTools." I told him, "Oh no, brother, this is old school. This is live guitar and live drums. This is like ZEPPELIN and PURPLE recorded." I didn't use any samples or triggers — nothing. This is all the real deal.
Classic Rock Revisited: This album will be successful because it feels good. How do you know when you are just sitting around playing and when you are really being creative?
Yngwie: That is a very good question because I don't really know, but I kind of sense it. The way I play is so spontaneous. I have to be clever about it. If I don't like it, and I don't feel that it is the one, then I just do will do it tomorrow — that is the beauty of having your own studio. I bought this house about fifteen years ago. It is a colonial old mansion sort of thing. It had servants quarters. I completely gutted one of the servants quarters and filled it up with Marshall stacks and hardwired it up to the control room where the heads are. It is a permanent guitar setup. I don't have to worry about miking shit up or anything. I push a button and there it is. It is such a sweet deal because I don't have to worry about anything. There is a track on the new album called "Caprici Di Diablo" and that was taking the bull by the horns, brother. I said to myself that I was just going to push it all the way out. The whole idea behind this record is my motto: More is more. Some people say less is more, but I say more is more. Like I said, as this album was coming along, I knew I needed someone like Tim. The first song we did was "Live to Fight Another Day". After doing the vocals, I went back to do the guitars again, because everything was up another notch higher. It has taken a year and a half to do this fucking album. It really turned out to be a good thing. A lot of things fell into place making this record. I think this record captures my passion more than any of my other records. When I play live is when it really comes out. On my records I like to have a couple of clams on there, that really makes the ones that have the fire stand out. I wouldn't say clams — I really threw myself over the cliff on that one [laughter]. The chance-taking is going to be more rewarding when you play it live, but there is also the chance you will fall on your ass.

Blaze Bayley Interview
UK-based heavy metal vocalist Blaze Bayley ( IRON MAIDEN, WOLFSBANE) was interviewed by the Belfast Telegraph one day before his wife/manager Debbie died late last month after suffering a stroke while in the hospital. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On his latest album, "The Man Who Would Not Die":
"This is such an important record for me. A few years ago I was broke, depressed, without a record contract and I didn't have a band. It was a dark time for me. I was considering giving it up and throwing in the towel. But then I met Debbie, who is now my wife and manager. I've known her nearly all my life. We grew up together in Tamworth and fate seemed to bring us together again. She's been instrumental in the making of this album and getting my head together."
On WOLFSBANE:
"I'm immensely proud of the Wolfsbane days. You know the way our fan-club was called the Howling Mad S**t-Heads? Well, we were even worse. When I left the band to join MAIDEN it caused a bit of bad blood between me and the guys, but that's all water under the bridge now and we've played a few reunion shows together which were great fun and just like the old days."
On fronting IRON MAIDEN in the mid-Nineties:
"The mid-Nineties were a horrible time to be in a rock band. Grunge and Britpop bands were everywhere and we [ MAIDEN] felt like we weren't getting a fair crack of the whip as far as the UK and American press was concerned. If you had long hair and your songs lasted more than four minutes you were old-fashioned. Thankfully those days are long gone. Metal never goes out of fashion because it was never in fashion in the first place.”
"Fronting IRON MAIDEN was and still is the biggest job in the world. For five years I was that man and I had to shoulder the burden. Do I have any regrets about it? Of course not. It was a brilliant way to see the world and make a living. The only thing I didn't like was not being able to see the fans after a show. In the WOLFSBANE days I would head out on the town with them as I don't see a difference between someone who comes to a show and someone who sings in a band. We all love music and that's what bonds us together, but MAIDEN is such a huge machine that there's no room to meet fans after the gigs as everything was scheduled and set in motion days in advance."
On his fans:
"The connection between myself and my audience is hugely important to me. It kept me going through the bad times and is one of the reasons why there is such a change in my lyrics from 'Silicon Messiah' and 'Tenth Dimension' to 'Blood and Belief' and 'The Man Who Would Not Die'.
"A few years ago I decided to stop singing about sci-fi situations and fantasy stuff and drop that persona altogether in favour of being completely honest about my thoughts. I think listeners appreciate it more."
On what words of advice would he give to the young Bayley of 1984 when he was just starting out:
"When I was younger I was guilty of pushing myself too much. I never took time to appreciate anything that I ever achieved because I was always looking at what I could do next. If I could give myself some advice when I first started I'd say — just try to enjoy it more and live in the moment. Sometimes life can be too short."
Read more from the Belfast Telegraph.
This was just funny at the end, it's so seriously put haha.
The Pulse of Radio reports that NIRVANA frontman Kurt Cobain's ashes were not stolen earlier this year despite tabloid reports that they were, according to Gigwise.com. Alan Nierob, publicist for Cobain's widow Courtney Love, said that a story alleging that Cobain's ashes were taken from Love's Hollywood home along with clothes and jewelry was "erroneously reported" and that the ashes were "never taken." Nierob issued his comments after an Australian artist claimed she would smoke Cobain's ashes in a joint as part of a performance art installation in Berlin later this month.
Natascha Stellmach claimed in Art World that she had acquired Cobain's ashes through "magic" and that smoking them would release the late singer and guitarist "into the ether from the media circus."
Inquiries about what Stellmach is currently smoking have not received a response.

Lemmy Interview
Keith Carmen of Canada's Exclaim! magazine recently conducted an interview with MOTÖRHEAD frontman Lemmy Kilmister. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
Exclaim!: What have been your career highs and lows?
Lemmy: "The high was probably going straight in at number one [for their 1981 live album 'No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith']. The low was probably just after it. You couldn't do another live album to go straight in at number one, could you?"
Exclaim!: What do you think of when you think of Canada?
Lemmy: "That large country just above the States and to one side of Russia. Canada's always a great place for us. We've always had a good time up there and people are great."
Exclaim!: What was the first LP/cassette/CD/eight track you ever bought with your own money?
Lemmy: " 'The Buddy Holly Story' on vinyl."
Exclaim!: What has been your strangest celebrity encounter?
Lemmy: "[ EAGLES guitarist] Joe Walsh once tapped me on the shoulder in a bar at the CMJ Convention. He said, 'I've wanted to meet you for a long time,' then turned around and walked away from me. Very strange. I never saw him again. But what an incredible introduction, huh?"

Stephen Pearcy Plans New Project
RATT frontman Stephen Pearcy has announced a new project for 2009, TOP FUEL ALL STARZ. The new CD and touring band will consist of '80s, '90s, 2000 artists. Pearcy says he'll even have a couple influential '70s artists that he admired growing up on the CD, that there will be plenty of class musicians revolving on the tour. The band will perform material from the artists involved and the new music from TOP FUEL ALL STARZ. With songs already written, recording will begin January 2009 with a tour to follow.
In other news, Pearcy — who is the president and CEO of Top Fuel Records — will again be involved in sponsoring a Top Fuel Dragster 2009 with Top Fuel Records. The new CD and tour will follow the NHRA Drag Racing series thru out the season 2009. The new race team and TFR sponsor association will hopefully be announced at the world finals in Pamona, California in November where Stephen and his RAT BASTARDS will be laying it down at the races.
Stephen Pearcy recently released his third solo CD, "Under My Skin".

Burrr January 19th In minneapolis In gonna have to wear extra leather to this one...LOL [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bazooka Joe from Tuesday, September 30, 2008 11:45:25 AM) | | Bazooka Joe wrote: | | Sebastian Bach Interview
Mick Burgess of Norway's Metal Express Radio recently conducted an interview with former SKID ROW vocalist Sebastian Bach. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Metal Express Radio: Do you think it's important in this day and age to be able to offer something extra to the fans to encourage fans to buy the product rather than downloading it?
Bach: I've sold 22 million SKID ROW records and if the fans don't get [ Bach's new solo album] "Angel Down", then it's their loss. It is just as good, if not better than those records, and I should know — I've heard those records a million times and I've heard "Angel Down" a million times and it's right up there with them. If you've spent 15 years listening to "Slave To The Grind" then it's your loss not getting "Angel Down". It's really, really good. All the fans keep telling me it is and the reviews do too.
Metal Express Radio: "Angel Down" [was] released in the UK on DR2 Records which is linked to Demolition Records. How did you get involved with Demolition?
Bach: Demolition offered me a record deal at the time when Spitfire was giving me a deal. Both are labels from the UK. Demolition picked up because the people that work at EMI in the UK must be brain dead or something. EMI has the right to put out my record everywhere in the world and they put it out everywhere except the UK. I can't understand why they didn't put it out especially after we'd sold out two nights at Wembley and me and Axl [ Rose] did a record together so I'm sure most of them would be interested in getting this so I don't know how many nights you have to sell out before they'll put your record out.
Metal Express Radio: Do you think being a priority act on a specialist hard rock label is more beneficial to you than being one of many artists on a major label who in many cases don't know how to market rock bands?
Bach: What label would not want to release the new Axl Rose material?? Forget about me — there's three songs on there with Axl Rose that people will want to hear. That's nuts. EMI's loss is DR2's gain.
Metal Express Radio: You've always seemed to be a music fan who found himself in a successful rock band and you never seem to have lost your enthusiasm for other bands. Your love of KISS and RUSH, amongst others, is well known. Do you still feel that sense of excitement when you hear some great music that makes you sit up and take notice?
Bach: I listen to music constantly. My iPod is always on. If I'm in the dressing room before the gig I'll be cranking out heavy metal from HATEBREED, OZZY to MALICE, EZO to ANVIL and MANOWAR's "Battle Hymns"; it's just so heavy, we all love it. In my iPod, I've got HATEBREED next to HELLYEAH next to HANOI ROCKS, so with a little flick of my thumb I can listen to something that was recorded today or something that was recorded 25 years ago. I don't analyze what I listen to, I just listen to what I want. I just love music.

Sebastian Bach Interview

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on the fan-generated controversy over the audio quality of the group's new album, "Death Magnetic".
Several articles from both the mainstream press and recording industry web sites have discussed the album in context of the so-called "Loudness Wars," a term used by UK publication The Guardian, which claims that the music industry is trying to make recordings as loud as possible mainly to stand out on radio.
An audio clip has surfaced on YouTube comparing music from the "Death Magnetic" CD to tracks from the album used for Guitar Hero, which were prepared differently. A number of fans prefer the Guitar Hero versions.
A petition circulated by some fans asking the band to remix the CD has gathered 12,000 signatures, although they are dwarfed by the nearly a million copies the CD has sold in the U.S. since going on sale September 12.
Ted Jensen, the engineer who mastered the album at Sterling Sound in New York, recently responded to fan complaints that the CD is too loud and the audio is pushed to distortion levels by writing, "I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me, I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."
Mastering is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device, the "master," from which all copies will be produced.
Blame for the sound quality has been laid at the feet of the band itself, producer Rick Rubin and his recording engineer, Greg Fidelman.
In a brand new interview with Blender.com, Ulrich responded to the complaints by saying, "Listen, there's nothing up with the audio quality. It's 2008, and that's how we make records. Rick Rubin's whole thing is to try and get it to sound lively, to get it to sound loud, to get it to sound exciting, to get it to jump out of the speakers. Of course, I've heard that there are a few people complaining. But I've been listening to it the last couple of days in my car, and it sounds fuckin' smokin'.
"Somebody told me about [people complaining that the Guitar Hero version of 'Death Magnetic' sounds better]. Listen, what are you going to do? A lot of people say [the CD] sounds great, and a few people say it doesn't, and that's OK. You gotta remember, when we put out '...And Justice for All', people were going, 'What happened to these guys, this record? There's no bass on it. It sounds like it was recorded in a fuckin' garage on an eight-track.' And now '...And Justice for All' is sort of the seminal METALLICA record that supposedly influenced a whole generation of death-metal bands. The difference between back then and now is the Internet.
"The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice. Listen, I can't keep up with this shit. Part of being in METALLICA is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing: 'James Hetfield had something for breakfast that I don't like.' That's part of the ride.
"I will say that the overwhelming response to this new record has exceeded even our expectations as far as how positive it is. So I'm not gonna sit here and get caught up in whether [the sound] 'clips' or it doesn't 'clip.' I don't know what kind of stereos these people listen on. Me and James made a deal that we would hang back a little and not get in the way of whatever Rick's vision was. That's not to put it on him — it's our record, I'll take the hit, but we wanted to roll with Rick's vision of how METALLICA would sound."

NEW YORK — Just as vinyl once gave way to compact discs as the main physical medium for music, could CDs be replaced now by a fingernail-sized memory card?
Perhaps not entirely, but SanDisk Corp., four major record labels and retailers Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are hoping that albums sold on microSD memory cards will at least provide an additional stream of sales.
The companies unveiled plans Monday to sell memory cards loaded with music in the MP3 format, free of copy protections.
Called "slotMusic," the new format is meant to address two intertwined trends.
Most albums are still sold in a physical format — 449 million were sold on CDs in 2007, while 50 million were sold digitally, according to Nielsen SoundScan — yet CDs are decreasingly popular. Albums sold on CD dropped almost 19 percent last year.
Given this, the record labels — Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp. and EMI Group PLC — are hoping slotMusic can be another physical revenue source, and one that is more versatile than CDs given the kinds of gadgets people carry around these days.
Unlike when the CD was introduced and people had to buy new players, many people already have the ability to play slotMusic albums, since many cell phones and multimedia players support microSD cards.
These new albums will come with a small USB dongle that lets buyers use them with computers, too. [The USB dongle will also enable users to transfer the songs to iPods, which don't have memory-card slots, via a PC.]
"Particularly in this kind of economic climate, the idea of being able to use an electronic device you already own to enjoy music rather than going out and buying a dedicated player is pretty compelling," said Daniel Schreiber, who heads the audio-video business unit at SanDisk, which created the microSD card format and is working on the technology behind slotMusic.
Schreiber said slotMusic albums will be sold on 1 gigabyte microSD cards, which means they will be able to hold a full album and related content such as liner notes and cover art.
Buyers will be able to use extra space on the cards to hold songs and photos from their own collections.
[The files will be MP3s encoded at a bitrate of 320 samples per second, the highest possible setting ensuring roughly CD-quality sound.]
The cards and dongles will come in boxes similar to current CD packaging, and Schreiber expects the cost of slotMusic releases to be "in the ballpark" of current CD prices.
It's not yet known exactly when — or how many — albums will be initially sold in the format, but Schreiber expects retailers to give a "sizable amount of shelf space" to slotMusic albums.
The albums are expected to debut at multiple retailers, including Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores in the U.S., and later in Europe.
Rio Caraeff, executive vice president of Universal Music Group's eLabs digital music unit, said the label will initially release about 30 titles in the slotMusic format. The titles will include old and new albums, such as one by singer Akon.
"We want to provide the benefits of digital music to people who go to physical retail environments," he said.
Asked whether he sees the format taking the place of the CD, Caraeff said, "I think we would certainly hope that would be the case, but I don't think we are so tied to that."
NPD Group entertainment analyst Russ Crupnick sees a potential for slotMusic to emerge as a compelling format.
He said the industry needs "desperately" to give people a new reason to head back into the music sections at brick-and-mortar stores.
"Not that we want them out of the gaming section, but once they're done looking at 'Guitar Hero' we want them to come look at the music section," he said.
