Oh, nice Becks! I'll echo the sentiments of all in that I am glad you had a nice time, that you wrote such a wonderful review and, especially, that you weren't squished!

AWESOME Becks!! I'm so glad you had a great time, except for the bruises of course. It sucks to be against the barrier when all the idiots start pushing to try to get closer. I've learned to brace my arms and knees against it which helps somewhat. I guess all those years of playing basketball paid off, LOL! I loved your review! I wish we could have seen them this past summer when they were touring, it sounds like we missed a really good show! Glad they played your favorites too!

Hey everyone, we're home from AC/DC! HOLY CRAP it was a great show! They had two Kiwi bands opening, The Checks (thoroughly meh) and Shihad (pretty damn cool) and AC/DC came on at about 8:55pm. What a show, they played a slew of their hits, Back in Black, The Jack, Shoot to Thrill, and they played for just under 2 hours. Angus did a massive guitar solo with some audience interaction, and he did a funny little strip tease to The Jack, revealing AC/DC boxers! LOL!!!!!! It was a spectacle really, awesome props and wee cartoon movies - one to open the show with Rock n Roll Train, and one that went with War Machine. We're a bit battered and bruised this morning, we were up against the barrier of our area and got smashed! Craig and his sister were trying to stop me from getting squished LOL being onlt 5'2"/160cm and about 127 pounds, I would have gotten squished big time if they hadn't pushed idiots back. In the first half hour over half a dozen people got pulled out from our area alone. Including a girl who collapsed only 20 minutes in to AC/DC's set. All in all, it was a fantastic show, and well worth every cent we spent on the tickets. My favourite parts included Angus going up on a hydraulic platform thing during his solo, Shoot to Thrill (one of my favourite AC/DC songs) and just the atmosphere, which was fantastic. We were all very sore afterwards, and this morning, but it was worth it!

I wish I could find the cartoon, but long ago the Far Side cartoon released one I laughed my butt off about!
It was a picture of exhausted people doing excercise and in a cave like dwelling with fire about. Their instuctor was the devil and he was wearing the 80's style aerobic outfit and yellling "Only 1,000,000,000 more leg lifts to go!"  The Cartoon was entitled "Aerobics in Hell" lol

MOOOCHAS graaaaceeeas there, my dear Spa! Not sure about the weight thing but , if anything, that devil of a personal trainer I have is the one causing change. I swear they must manufacture these guys in hell..... HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey GD, I know exactly what you are saying. I cannot begin to count the number of memories that flooded my mind as we walked into that bar last night!  The nights in L.A. in the tiny bars. The LOOOOONG parties. Oh boy.

In any event, I truly appreciate ALL your kind remarks! It was a great night and I honestly wish you guys could have been there.

Congrats Freeze on a great night! You sure looked as though you enjoyed everyminute of it. Might I add, (and not to be an asskiss), but it looks like this band gigging has shaved a few pounds off you!  Whatever it is, it's working for ya!

Sincere thanks to all!  That was the first time in YEARS that the Princess and I were out so late, especially at a bar!! Had the time of our lives! EVERYONE there was friendly and supportive and it was an environment that really makes you feel good. Spent time chatting with other musicians and sharing ideas. Listened to a couple INCREDIBLE bands. Had some VERY humbling compliments. It was just a wonderful evening.

It is easy to see from the videos that I am thoroughly enjoying myself, as were my bandmates. Our first show was just as perfect as we could have ever hoped for. Got an "invite" from one of the other, more established acts to join them on a "mini-tour" around Vegas at some other "locals" venues. Things are looking VERY good for us. Clearly we will get better as we play more shows. I tell you, had you heard some of these other acts, you would have been floored! I mean, these guys were simply remarkable. So tight. So entertaining. I learned a lot from them. I am flattered that they asked us to join them.

It's been a LONG time since I felt this way. The fire has been re-lit! All I can think of is playing again! I am really looking forward to it. I am looking forward to getting better. THAT will be the true pay off!!!

GOOD MORNING my friends!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh what a night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We had the most incredibly fantastic evening!!!! What a RUSH!! The minute we started playing, the place went absolutely crazy! It was a feeling that all you musicians and performers know SO well and the rest of you can surely imagine!! After so many years away from the "live show" environment, I was just floored by the response!!!!!

I am currently downloading pics and vids from our camera. It may take a little while. Not sure about that videos, either. We have a small, digital camera and it has a video feature but I really doubt there will be sound. I don't think there is , BUT.. several of my band mate's wives were filming , as were other "fans" so I am sure there will be live footage surfacing somewhere soon!!!!

The Princess was just beaming with pride and the rush was just indescribable. I am still swimming in awe. Dead tired and sore as all get out but it was worth every ache! I will be sharing what I have with all of you soon.

Good luck DF!

Well it's 4:10am here, I am exhausted, I have had about 3 hours sleep maximum thanks to our arsehole neighbours deciding to party it up tonight (something they have done many times since moving in in december). I have already been awake for an hour and couldn't get back to sleep, just when I think the music is stopping, it starts up again. I need a lot of sleep, so I am severely hacked off to say the least.

A very Happy Thursday to all from a very, very SOGGY Las Vegas! Just raining like crazy here and rather chilly. Makes for a very uncomfortable life for yours truly as my back is just aching! Nonetheless, had a FANTASTIC practice last night!! Oh man, we were just on the money with every song! I think we have a chance at a really good show this weekend!!!

Woke up this morning with a very slight sore throat but that is completely normal after practice. I am staying by the fire as much as possible. Have an appointment this morning with the trainer and I am DREADING it but, I shall sally forth! That clock is still ticking!!!
[Deep Freeze] Tuesday, January 19, 2010 10:58:47 AM
You know, for a guy like me that watches as much television as I do, this is terribly embarrassing to admit but....I am fascinated by a show called "Overhaulin' "..It is a reality series where these folks steal someone's car and turn it into a show car (kiind of like "Pimp My Ride", only way better.)  ANYWAY, it is pretty embarrassing considering I only recently started watching and found out that it is NOT a "new show" but has been on the air for like, FIVE years!!
[joedraper] Monday, January 18, 2010 2:11:17 AM
Hi Kiamat! I didn't add anything to what the other members said because, well they said it so well, I just had nothing else to add... Oh except that they have the best looking/sounding/photographic drummer of course lol.
Best of luck for your essay. Take your time, do as many drafts as you need and once you've writtten it, don't read it straight away. If possible, go for a walk, do something totally different and a few hours later get back to it to proof read it with a fresh mind. You'll do great though!

Hey, I just want to thank everyone who gave me a reply, it has really really helped me to form ideas. I'd also like to say a huge thankyou for all your encouraging messages, because I have actually been really struggling to write this essay- I didn't really know where to start (the brief is really vague, that doesn't help) and obviously I want to do the band justice, and just as importantly, you guys as fans justice.

I'm planning to do more work on Heavy metal as a genre, because it generally gets as bad a press in academic music journals etc as it does in the mainstream media, perhaps worse, which I've found really annoying, as people who are meant to be a serious authority on popular music shouldn't be so narrow minded- the idea still prevails that it 'isn't real music' and those few who have written about it favourably are very much rooted in the late 80s MTV stuff.

Anyway, big big hugs all round and I'll get back to everyone when I've finished it- but now I have to go start packing for going back to Uni.  xx

I think I could not come up with the words to describe exactly why I love Priest so I'll just use imagry.
Priest is like lightning in a jar. When you open the jar such a rush of power and electricity comes out that every hair on your body stands at attention, that's how it feels to hear a priest song for the first time ever, and with many of the songs I still get that feeling even after hearing them thousands of times over.

[HOT ROCKIN' METAL GODDESS] Saturday, January 16, 2010 9:31:58 PM
Hi Kiamat, I don't believe we have ever spoken before, so I just wanted to say HI and wish you well on your essay.  I've been a Priest fan since I heard the album SFV in '82. I completely agree with everything Guido, Freeze and Becks said. I'd just like to add that the harmony between KK and Glenn is like no other duo in music. They are so different in their styles and yet they blend together so incredibly well. Rob's vocal ability is like no other singer - he can sing ANYTHING. He changes his voice to suit the song and when you listen to any one album, he sings differently on every song. That in itself keeps things fresh. When a singer can only sing one way, after awhile every song starts to sound the same. I have never had that deja vu moment when listening to Priest like I do with new Maiden or other bands. Some how, and I honestly don't know how they do it, but they are able to come up with new riffs and new melodies - nothing ever sounds like another song to me. The lyrics of Priest's music is also unlike other bands. I have found so much truth and insight into my own life listening to Priest. They pour their hearts and souls into every note and word and you can FEEL it. And as Becks said so well, they always make me feel better when I am down, they give me strength when I feel weak and they take me soaring even higher when I already feel on top of the world. They have a song for every mood and feeling.

Good luck with your essay! I'd LOVE to read it when you are done! When you write about something you love, the words just seem to come. I'm sure you will do very well

I'll chime in on this too, as best I can anyways LOL!

For me the importance of Priests music lies in the fact that in many ways, they are heavy metal revolutionaries. The twin axe attack, the soaring vocals, the leather and chains. The thing that sets them apart from other bands is the fact they are unabashedly a heavy metal band - they have never had any qualms about saying they are a metal band, where other groups may shy away from the association due to the supposed social connotations. They have never compromised themselves, and have lasted a lot longer than most bands of any genre. Their music uplifts me when I am down, empowers me when I feel weak, and most of all, makes me incredibly happy. No other band has touched me in that way.

That's a short way of putting it anyways LOL!

I'll chime in here too, Kia, so long as I am properly cited and given royalty checks when this essay goes gold! HAAAA!!

For me, it was the blend of image and sheer musical talent. The dual guitars and harmony between them was one thing but put a singer with such a range into the mix and you had ultimate gold. My musical tastes range from the classics to the modern and ANYONE who can do what Priest have done for decades still amazes me. It isn't a Charlie Daniels' "Devil Went Down to Georgia" one-off, rather a lifetime of innovation. As many have said here, they do NOT grow stale having followed a formula for years. Not a simple 4/4 verse, hook, chorus. No gimmicks. Play Bach against Priest and you'll find more of a "formula" in Bach, I guarantee it.

Yes, their ability to do it again and again without being profane is huge. As they themselves have said, their look is as important as are their musical abilities. For me, if you put that much raw talent (guitars and vox) together with such insight in terms of image and you can only have the monster that is Priest.

Feel free to edit what is truly raw emotion at will.

You know Kia, you will likely get a multitude of responses to that question..each of them different! I know what sets them apart for me. I have always said that it is the melodic nature of their music and the lyrics which are thoughtful and never profane. I find that particularly refreshing since it is all too common for bands to resort to one four-letter word after another when they write songs. Priest do not do that. They do not need to. They combine thoughtful lyrics with melodic riffs and a pounding low-end that never overshadows the main riff. It always "stays in the pocket".

Priest started coming on strong at a time when punk was gaining strength and I think they literally saved "hard" rock music. Their image launched a revolution and, through it all, they kept a sound that many have tried to imitate yet no one has. Not in the same manner as Priest! For me, these are the reasons I prefer Judas Priest. I could certainly think of more but I think these are the main reasons.

Hey everyone- apologies for my lack of presence this last week- one of our rabbits got very sick and it seems like I've spent the whole time trying to force feed him liquid food with a dropper (very messy!) but he's much better now, fingers crossed.

Anyhow, my main problem tonight as a certain essay for my uni course that I believe I mentioned to a few of you ages back on online music fan communities and since the time to write it has finally come (because the deadline is next week- eeek..!)- and I wondered if any of you guys could possibly help with this?

I'd like to know what it is you feel is most important about Priest's music and what sets them apart from other bands?

I don't want to take up anybody's time, I would have put this in a separate thread but its not really important enough for that (its just a 1000 word essay); I know that this website is a great example of a place where people from everywhere can come together and share their love of music without prejudice, so this is a kind of tribute, if you see what I mean.

Hope you're all having a great weekend and it's warming up some. All our snow suddenly melted, though we may be due some more..

The songs we have posted on the web are part of our original set list and the recording quality is TERRIBLE but you can at least get an idea of what we are doing!! I did take him to a music store before Christmas and he was kind of mesmerized by all the stuff in there.  He did get a kick out of trying out the drum kits, but they were adult size.  It's good that you got your son a real kit, because I think people waste their money on those ones from the toy store.  They're not nearly sturdy enough for a kid to pound on.  The only drumming we've done here is on Guitar Hero World Tour.  It gives him a bit of an idea of what it's all about.  I'd like the boys to learn real instruments though.  Thanks a lot for the advice.  I think I'll sign him up for some lessons and rent a kit to see how it goes.  HAVE A GREAT DAY METALHEADS!

If he wants to play drums then let him. Zakk is getting his first kit for his birthday next week. He has been taking lessons on an electronic kit but when he gets home his legs aren't long enough to reach my bass pedal or hihat pedal so we decided that he's shown enough promise to get his first 'real' kit lol.  At 8 years oldhe's figured out what is getting his attention and the sooner you start the better. Drum notations are easier to read than any other sheet music but I suggest you get him to some formal lessons asap. Piano is also good and well, every boy wants a guitar lol. Also if he can figure out his timing now from drums my theory is that it will be easier for him to grasp another instrument but you'd hate to get him something that he has no iterest in. You get the most amazing children's drum kits' The one we're getting Zakk comes from a music store (as opposed to a toy store) It is a direct replica of my kit and it has amazing sound. The children's kits usually come with a throne, hi-hats, crash and the hardware. Take him to a music store and let him get a feel there.

Joe - she's ok so far as we know, Craigs mum just said she is feeling very sorry for herself and upset that she hurt her boyfriend (he is just bruised). You're right, she'll talk when she wants to. She's going to the AC/DC concert with us in two weeks, hopefully by then she will be feeling a bit better about things, and may even have a new car. The one she wrote off she'd had for about 10 years, so she had plenty of use out of it. She's just needing to replace it sooner than planned now!

Hi Joe, I hope you get some rest this week.   Watching them in swim lessons is fun.  It's neat to see how they improve from week to week.  Wait till they start taking music lessons or playing team sports like soccer when they run in packs after the ball.  It's hilarious!  Just trying to figure out the music thing for 8 year old.  I think guitar or piano would be a better 1st choice, but he wants to play drums.  Any suggestions out there for what would be a good 1st instrument?

Hi Guardian Angel.. They are pretty much full time now. Last year they were at a playschool and it was 5 days a week but they went 8am to 12:30 pm. Now the go from 8am to 3pm.

As much as I sorely need the extra time in my day, I am missing them something fierce! And I'm soo tired this week! I think I'm having a harder time to adjust than they are (don't get me wrong this is a fantastic thing) lol. I'm just really lost without them around. But I'll get over it lol. Zakk also started swimming lessons yesterday. He's been pestering me for a year now and that boy had a smile on his face from the moment he stepped into the pool until he had to get out.. and then the tears started lol.
It's so cute seeing all the little kids in their swimming caps and gears all swimming in a structured class lol.

Becks, how is your sister in law after her wreck? I can totally identify with what she may be feeling now. I had a pretty bad crash when I was 22. The car was a total write off and it took me a few years to get the courage up to drive again. Once I got back behind the wheel, I was pretty nervous for a while but in time, it did go. I'm much more careful now and much calmer. Give her time, don't pressure her to talk about it but be there for her when she needs to talk about it.

Sad to see the damage in Hatie. Reminds me so much of the quake that rocked Mexico City years ago. The death rate will be very high unfortunately.

You know, my cousin in Chico mentioned that they had a bit of a shaker. Way north, right?

Still, they build and expect shakers there as they do here. Ever look at the data sheets? Surprised me to see that the biggest US earthquakes were CA and TN! I would have guessed CA but Tennessee? Yup. Biggest lake to me is Reelfoot that was formed when a massive shaker got the Mississippi flowing backwards for a time in the 1800s.

Here's hoping the country can recover quickly. Can't imagine how bad it is overthere right now.

There was an earthquake near Eureka (a city about 200 miles north of here) a few days ago and it was 6.0 on the Richter scale. There was damage, but no injuries.

Flip on CNN or Fox. It is all over the news. They really don't have a judge on the damage but I just came from the other half of the island in the República Dominicana and can vouch that the place was already a mess. Natural disasters on top of one of the biggest slums I have ever seen and I didn't even cross into Haiti.

I am guessing that it will be bad once they access the damage. I knew they had a fault line running under the country but a 7.0 is going to be massive in certain parts of the country as they didn't build to withstand such damage. I sit on the New Madrid fault and even have earthquake insurance.
