Another one gone from us this year. Carriel portrayed a powerful young woman when all women were still seen as in need of being rescued.

All our people we grew up with. Far to young.

You right JD. Does give someone pause to think that if you don't embrace life now and really participate, you could just be gone any moment now. We've all lived to an age that any thought of being long lived simply because your just sure you will be is just not enough.

vail,guido.... yeah that sucks. Carrie Fisher only 60 years old. Shit . Makes ya think the older ya get you should live each day as full and appreciative as ya can,but it's hard to remember that for some reason....get caught up with stuff thats really not as important.

I think I need to get off my ass, stop procrastinating and get into my hobbies and enjoy.

R.I.P. Carrie Fisher.

Princess Leia?!? Carrie Fisher? Nooooooooooooo!!!!!
What a tragic loss. While she hated the gold bikini in the Jabba the Hutt scene (loved killing him as she stated), may she RIP knowing that the image of her in that outfit along with her entire career in front of the camera as a witty author and as an activist will make her live on forever. Yet another sad way to close 2016.

Even watching my own post, I can name all the films but the ones that made me laugh (unsung) were Stir Crazy and Silver Streak. Every time he got thrown off that train and that "SON OF A BITCH!" Just made me laugh like crazy. Richard Pryor and even Scatman Crothers in it (and even Jaws from Bond fame?) just icing on the cake. Damn good film.

Whaddup, broham! Just getting back from an emergency trip from Detroit. Good friend from HS's dad passed and he was cremated. Had an (ahem) illegal dumping of his ashes into Lake St. Clair yesterday which has kept me silent of late. Yeah, couldn't afford the time off but, hey, gotta be there for the homies you have known all your life, no? Right on the back of coming back from Brazil before the start of the Olympics but, like a concert, THAT was something one does for an "old friend," eh?

[Becks] Sunday, August 07, 2016 2:09:39 AM
Ahhhh the VHS era. I was born in 1984 so remember it very well. Don't remember VHS music singles though lol.
[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Nupe The Ripper from Sunday, July 31, 2016 6:09:56 AM)
[Vaillant 3.0] Monday, August 01, 2016 9:32:26 PM
Man, thanks for all that info, Nupe! You learn something new everyday. Or in this case, confirmed that something once existed (albeit not too popular at the time)!

HB, I do remember noticing that the VCR would take longer to rewind a tape than with the rewinder. Clever idea, but sadly, we are in the DVD era. No need to rewind a DVD!
[Nupe The Ripper] Monday, August 01, 2016 10:41:18 AM
The VHS single usually contained 2-3 music videos, much like a vinyl single with its A- and B-sides. The VHS format was just a bit too clumsy and expensive for this purpose, so VHS singles sold much less than music video compilations and concert videos. Some VHS singles sold pretty well though, usually if the video in question was banned or only had restricted airplay due to explicit content.
[Head banger] Monday, August 01, 2016 9:05:37 AM
I remember rewinders, the idea was that rewinding using your VCR would wear it out.  thats back when they were pricy.
[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Vaillant 3.0 from Sunday, July 31, 2016 12:48:32 PM)
[Vaillant 3.0] Sunday, July 31, 2016 12:48:32 PM
The VHS single?? Did it only have the song, or was there a music vid in it, as well?

As for owning a VCR. As far as I was aware (born in '89 here), we had two VCRs - one in the living room and one in my room. This was already late 90s, early 2000s. We used to have this HUGE collection of movies on VHS. Then one day something in our house caught fire while we were out. It didn't spread, but it got hot enough to melt just about anything that was made of plastic. Ever seen a partially-melted TV? That was pretty gnarly. Heh! I also remember that we used have this rewinder thing that was shaped like a car. You put in the tape, press a button and the headlights would turn on while it was rewinding. Pretty cool!
[Head banger] Sunday, July 31, 2016 9:59:27 AM
I dont recall the year they became common, my household was behind the times.  but I had a friend with a betamax early on (the sony compeditor to the VHS) and I dont recall any singles for sale, but I never really looked.  you bought a concert, or a compilation or most likely you taped something off MTV (or in Canada we had much music)

[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Vaillant 3.0 from Saturday, July 30, 2016 1:32:37 PM)
[Nupe The Ripper] Sunday, July 31, 2016 6:09:56 AM
While I personally don't remember much from the VHS era (I was only born in 1991!), I've read about the so-called VHS single. It never was a major success due to the relatively high retail cost, and the VHS format was more suitable for music video compilations or concert videos as even the shortest commercial tapes were usually 60 minutes long.

As for VCRs, my father bought one in the very early 80s and it pretty much cost the entire month's salary for a blue-collar worker. A decade later they were so cheap that it was not unusual for a working-class family to have a couple of them (one for the parents, one for the kids).
[Vaillant 3.0] Saturday, July 30, 2016 1:32:37 PM
Only the oldies would know when VHS players became more affordable for the public. Thinking about it, though, I suppose that it wouldn't make sense to sell music videos on tape, considering the recording capacity of a VHS tape, but still. I always wondered if there was ever a niche for that, like with singles in music.

Okay, Old-Timers. I've had this question knocking around the back of my head for some time now.

Alright. Say it's the late 80s, early 90s. One of your favorite bands releases a music video. You catch it on MTV and really enjoy it. Was there ever a way of procuring an official copy (or...I guess....tape) of that video without recording it on a VHS player?

Yeah, dumb question, but always wondered.

Coins and their metal (to bring back this old topic), one clear exception: the Kennedy 1/2 dollar.

It is an unsung hero as it had a greater percentage of silver in the mix. The '64s for sure (something like 90% silver). After, they still had 40% or something of the sort. Heck, makes 'em worth $1.50 USD!!
(for the record, I think my comic book collection is going at about the same rate). Hmmm...let's see what my 8 copies of Spawn #1 are selling for nowadays.

[guidogodoy] Wednesday, February 26, 2014 5:54:01 PM
Yup, and in North America, this sort of "spirit duplicator" was known as a Ditto Machine! Ditto paper and the machine used to make the copies coexisted with the mimeograph but was invented later. It was the immediate precursor to the photocopy machine! The buzz came from the mineral spirits that were used to make the copies.

There is only one right answer. Ink doesn't play into it. Perhaps in a mimeograph or a carbon copy but neither directly gave you a buzz. Only one sort of duplication did it.

My question? Name it!

[guidogodoy] Tuesday, February 25, 2014 10:56:12 AM
Mimeograph - nope. Close, but no cigar.

Had you gotten the answer, you would have won the grand prize: a real turntable! LOL! Of course, you'd have to pay s/h and any duty costs but the penny would have been included.

Record player you describe sounds like one my sister and I had. It was a box. Take the cover off to expose the arm / turntable. Played '45s natively but could do a '78 as well. HA!

I think mine is still at my mom's house. Probably worth a Canadian penny to a collector.

I doubt that you will ever get more than a penny.  pre 1993 ( think) are pure copper, so those are worth selling for the metal value, currently 1.6 cents worth.  the once since are not worth much since they are an alloy.  the US coins have been alloy or layered depending on the denomination for a long time, so never worth anything for the metal

I have been shot down with a canadian coin in the states before, that I got in change there.  ffs.

That is just it: WHY could you catch a buzz? Your answer below deducts points. It had nothing to do with ink, per se. What was it?

Full credit for the penny on the arm of the turntable. Hey, HB. No more 1 cent pieces? Should I hold on to my old maple leaf ones? I was in a store the other day when a lady was shut down for trying to pass of a Canadian quarter. WTF?!? The world is falling apart.

You remember "HEARING??" Never actually did it?! You poor creature. couldn't afford a turntable, eh? lol Certainly couldn't have much to do with age.

I'll let the wet paper answer go for a bit to see if anyone can answer it. Very common, though. Teachers hand out some activity and the paper is a little wet so the first thing to do is take a huge sniff. Why?

Very good kiwi music at that! Emotional concert to say the least. Sad if you read about the drummer(s).

Now, the trivia question? Anyone?

Holy shit....for you, JD.

While I have a typo in the word "where" (as in "where does this show up in the film?). It hits me. Ossie Davis is in it as well !!! (seel Two posts below).

Great performance and also the topic for a trivia question. This beautiful song pops up at a VERY odd place in a Stephen King film. Which and were?

HA! Do you honestly think that I could just jump to the last minute?! Didn't remember this one too well but when I saw Roddy McDowall and Ossie Davis (both GREAT actors), I just had to watch it all again.

Absolute masterpiece by Serling. Poor Portifoy, though. After 30 years of service, he didn't deserve it!

Creepy as hell! GREAT!!
