Persecution has emerged as one of my favorites too!  Pretty much sums it up, huh?

only priest did what they do with metal what music does with melody...
"nostradamus" is a definitive metal masterpiece!!!
a classic for the ages,
NOSTRADAMUS WOULD BE PROUD!
[Hard as Iron] Tuesday, September 16, 2008 3:54:47 PM
Phantom, I like your break down very much, you put a great deal of effort into your analysis and I would have to agree with you. Although my favorites are different, I am in agreement with you. Especially on the italian part in PP.

It has taken some time for it to grow on me. I just relocated to Mesa, AZ from Maryland and the tranistion hasn't always been smooth, but it's been worth it! This album has been my guardian, I travel the freeways of Phoenix looking out at the spacious and mountain terrain and lyrics like the ones in Exile "Cross over the mountains......" give an even greater affect to the emotions one could posess.

The song 'Alone' is one that I truely can connect with.  For anyone living in the southwest, listen to 'Dawn of creation' as the sun is setting, f*cking awesome! As to 'Prophecy' love it! Took awhile to grow on me. When I play it in the car, it's reminiscent of 'Waynes world' when my kids start banging their heads.

I know I'm babbling, but one last thing, Since Rob doesn't have the voice he use to, I think they orchestrated his octaves perfectly. For a bunch of guys in their 50's this is a true master piece.

pleasently surpriced by the new album.

Funny how that works sometimes.... you get stoned and or drunk and sometimes the music becomes alot more emotional. I smoked and a joint and listened to exhile and it just blows me away. Really fits for my period in my life right now though.

[tasnam1] Sunday, August 03, 2008 1:53:21 PM
I can agree with a lot of your comments Phantom.

Best tracts:

Persecution, Alone, Nostradamus, Prophecy, Death, and i do like the Italian singing in P&P

Overrated-but still OK - (in my opinion) by other users on this board are War, Future of mankind, Visions, Revelations

I don't really listen to the slower ones too much, since I burned off a single cd for my car the next day that I bought the album.

Nostradamus

Songs - CD 1

Dawn of creation:
Wonderful Intro. Great feeling. Sounds very spacy.
Prophecy:
If I think of "Prophecy", I think a little bit of "Fight".
A good combination in sounds of "Fight" and "Judas Priest"
The lead breaks are fantastic.

Awakening:
A real depth and width in the sound.
Revelations:
Great song. Great sound. Great voice. I loved him.
Perfect lead work. The real twin axe attack.
Perfect harmony section at the end of the song.

The four horsemen:
Pure middle ages. Where's my long bow? I'm going to war.
Brings memories of the great WCW "The four horsemen".
War:
Theatrically. The battle sounds are incredible.

Sands of time:
Yes, "Fever" (depth and width). The Choruseffect is briliant.
Rob's voice is awesome. So many feelings.
Pestilence and Plague:
Good mid-tempo song but I don't like the Italian singing parts. Glenns lead breaks are wonderful. I loved the way
he's playing this once.

Death:
It's so amazing. Unbelievable.

Peace:
I'm speechless. Awesome.
Conquest:
So on it's ok but I don't like the chorus so much.

Lost love:
Priest has better love songs. It's not my thing.
The lyrics are wonderful.

Persecution:
One of the best of this album and one of the best ever.

Songs - CD 2

Solitude:
Bring back memories of "Eulogy" again.
Exiled:
What should I say? It's difficult.
First time I can't find the right words.
The chorus is awesome.
Damned, this is one of "my" compositions - ha.

Alone:
Good old Judas Priest stuff.
Can included in many older albums.

Shadows in the flame:
I'm surprised!
Visions:
My feeds don't touch the ground. I'm not stoned
but I'm flying high.

Hope:
Sorry but it sounds like a lullaby.
New beginning:
It's sounds more like Pink Floyd then Judas Priest.
Could be on "A momentary lapse of reason".

Calm before the storm:
Back to the roots.
Nostradamus:
It's the best of this album and of course the best ever.
Pure Judas "Fucking" Priest. It sounds a little bit
like "Painkiller".

Future of mankind:
Awesome! I'm in love with this song.
Harder stuff mixed with all this emotions
and all the harmonys.

My favs:

Nostradamus
Death
Future of mankind
Persecution
Visions
Revelations
Prophecy

Bye. Michael

A month and a half after the release, I still have the same opinion. The album blew me away, especially the first cd but I'm enjoying the second one too just as much.Persecution is my favorite now. The slower songs/parts have their place in such a long work though I'm more for the speedier Judas Priest. Throughout, Halford's voice is golden. The lyrics, well, it's about Nostradamus. There are many ways to telling about the power struggles between empires and the poor sods that get stuck in between. Judas Priest picked one and ran with it.
[Dime/UNDER BLOOD RED SKIES!!!!] Saturday, August 02, 2008 7:23:33 AM
Man this album is almost to hard to describe everyrthing so kick ass about it. Its really an awesome look how Priest has adapted through the decades, but can dig back into its roots for a sound. This album really is an emtional album, its all about a dudes life, right. Don't see why there are some people really against it.  I think it's a really unique idea, even if i dont really have to much respect for the character the albums about.

[MASI 73] Tuesday, July 29, 2008 12:43:54 PM

Took me a while to get the Nostradamus cd out here, I didn't want to download it from Itunes. I collect cds and i wanted my own copy (have about 4600). I got all the metal I need here, (that's the one thing I can't do without).  When we roll out on long missions  I take the headphones and stick them on my headset mouth piece, that way the whole crew gets educated ( we only pause it for radio chatter).
JayDee is here too?
Anyway, thanks bro.

No worries Masi73.

All is good on the PRIEST Noticeboard with me.

Do you or Jay Dee need any hard to get Priest to listen to while out there?

Tasnam1/Jay dee, I want to thank you both for putting up great points on your post. I would like to start by saying that I did not mean to personally attack anyone. I am as opinionated as anybody on this site, what I had understood from those was a negative criticism that in a way had bothered me some. Reading it again and reading your sports example, it was spot on. I am happy that my (armchair analysis) was crushed so gracefuly in my (opinion).
thank you both for the smart conversation (I haven't had one in about 10 months).
[tasnam1] Monday, July 28, 2008 4:24:06 PM
Thanks JayDee - I could tell from the moment we posted you are a true armchair producer/coach!!!

I am not even concerned with the lack of Nostradamus content regarding the current setlist.
I agree with the other poster that made the comment about KK stating "not to play too much new content" because fans eyes will glaze over.

That is accurate and holds a lot of merit.

I like it a lot, and it has some "strong winners" (In my opinion), some "solid songs" (In my opinion) and one or two that are "fair fillers" (In my opinion).
Nothing I strongly dislike.

I can understand if someone is a NOT DIE HARD FAN this would be a divisive album.
(Not me though, after all I am the die hard fan.  Any Priest/Fight/Halford is worth it)

This album stands on it's own merits apart from other albums in SOME WAYS because of it's THEME.
However I don't totally buy into the fact that you cannot compair it to other albums entirely.
In other ways you can compair it to other Priest albums, because it is a Priest album in itself.
That is like saying you cannot compair sports teams season after season, of course you can.
True each season is different, but you sometimes discuss lineups and how each lineup compairs to the "current lineup" - and you are not even being critical when you do so.
But again I can understand why this album could make two sides.

Who ever started this thread about "downfall crap" perhaps is not a die hard fan; and I encourage people to stop posting on it so it will have it's own downfall.
I think we sould have a new thread that is more "global" away from this one album called:

"Priest Marketing - Your Opinion"
[JayDee  Jepsen] Monday, July 28, 2008 9:51:10 AM
Great football analogy tasnam1.

Look!  The "downfall of Priest" is the wrong use of words however many of the threads and comments from fans point to the same basic desire to see JP have the cd sales and RIAA recognition that they had in years past but have the same frustration for the decisions they make when promoting their new material. Because of internet downloading, pirating, lack of radio support for new JP material- JP has to really put their thinking cap on when promoting their stuff. JP made a big internet  splash with Nostradamus but didn't fiollow up with good videos of their "strongest" (best) songs & only played 1 intro and 2 ok songs (e.g. Death) from their new cd-the one Glenn says he's 'most proud of'.  This tour is the time to play all the best songs from Nostradamus and pump cd sales, talk about the new cd during the concert get the fans excited and pumped for the future full Nostradamus show, make videos of the best songs and support video(s) by playing the song(s) on the current tour.

Poor cd sales = no future record deal with big companies like Sony- remember what happened when JP signed with Atlantic Records then had poor "Demolition" cd sales? JP was canned! Prior to Demoliton and after Pankiller, JP had record deals with substandard companies.

All of us want to see JP have huge cd sales, RIAA, and concert tour success but scratch our heads in frustration when the band consistantly shoots themselves in the foot.

JayDee

I'd like to thank Masi73 for the post.
I've never thought of myself as an 'armchair producer', - but I like the backhanded compliment.

Masi73 I see you are from Miami and currently in Iraq.
(My brother-in-law just returned - he is a sergeant from the 133rd Engineering Division)

I am a diehard Priest fan.
90% of my audio listening time is spent with Priest (incl Halford & Fight) the rest misc Heavy Metal.
Yet I do not feel Priest is infallible.  ('absence of error' or to the 'inability to err')

Nor do I feel any Company, Government, Sports team is infallible.  They can all make mistakes and have lapses in judgment.  OR make decisions that could have been avoided.
But it does not change my support.
Yes I am opinionated.  So isn't everyone on this board including you.
There is nothing wrong with that at all.  If you think about it, I we were not opinionated Otherwise we would not have message boards.
Being from the U.S. you will understand this analogy:

I live in the New England Area.  We have three sports teams that have done very well recently.
The New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics.

When a bunch people FANS get together to watch a game do they ever shout out at the TV?
Do they ever yell at the TV screen in disbelief that a quarterback or coach made a call that 'clearly was not going to work’?

Of course.  It would seem ridiculous that FANS would get together then watch a game in pure silence without voicing their armchair coaching thoughts to the TV.

We all have done it during a sporting event.

Does that change our loyalty?  NOT AT ALL!

In fact it shows that we are rooting them on.  Cheering them for their success.

The Patriots had a near perfect record (Like your Dolphins did years ago).  Do you think during the season fans didn't yell at players on TV when they made bad decisions?

It is actually a show of support.

The same as when people make opinionated comments about Judas Priest and their directions.
It is a verbal show that we want the band to gain fans base and gain more recognition. - But doesn't change our support.

I still remember back when Point of Entry came out in 1981 or so.  I had just got off the Unleashed and British Steel high, and the album was initially a disapointment to me.  I expected a very heavy dose of metal and felt that the album sounded weak (on first listening).  It took a while to grow on me but now I have come to feel that Point of Entry is one of my favorites.  Anyway,  when I first heard the song Nostradamus before the album was released I was very very excited because I felt most of the album would have the typical Priest sound like that song did.  After I got the CD I again was initially disapointed for some of the same reasons as before however,  with ALL Priest works,  the latest is always different and it takes listening to it a few times for it to grow on you.  I now feel that Nostradamus is simply AWESOME!  I can't wait to see them play the entire album on a future tour similar to the Queensryche mindcrime tour last year.  All the people that are talking about cutting some of the songs out,  etc simply don't understand Judas Priest and appreciate all the work that is in this great work of art.  No it is not a typical Priest release, but once again,  every release Priest has ever done has sounded different at the time and they all have developed a life of their own.  I predict that after all the touring,  current tour and future Nostradamus exlusive tour,  Priest will then work on and release the ultimate heavy metal sounding CD which will blow away all the doubters.  That unfortunately may be their last release as they are not getting any younger, but I am sure that they will give us one more dose of the Priest we have come to know and love.  Once again I say that NOSTRADAMUS ROCKS!

Long live Judas Priest!

The cd and all the tracks are in perfect order and harmony... You know, I love you armchair producers and musicians, you sit there passing judgement on the work of others as if you were some kind of expert. I respect the fact that all of us have opinions, but you guys(Vaillant 3.0 & tasnam1), are too opinionated. Who are you to sit there and tell this band how they should conduct their business, considering they have done a great job for over 30 years. I mean really, don't air the video, this song here, that song there... Yes, we all have opinions but you dudes take the cake!!!
The cd is a masterpiece, the arrangments are flawles and very intricate. Nothing in this world is perfect ( look at the Mona lisa, or The Last Supper), but they are still a masterpiece. So don't be so anal and enjoy the work of art others have brought to life for you to enjoy, rather than sitting there and picking it apart.

Vaillant 3.0,

You are 100% accurate.  I have thought this from the first day i heard the CD.

Also a few other comments i have been thinking about:

#1  Pestilence and Plague is a great song....but I think it is either it is in the wrong place.  Wht i mean is it is too "positive" sounding.  Don't get me wrong I love the song, but it sounds so "uppy" considering the subject matter.  I think P&P should have another "darker" sound  like Death and War.  Again I like the sound but each time I listen i forget we are talking about the 3(of 4) horsemen of apocolypse - I guess I feel too good listing to P&P subject matter.

#2  STOP the WAR VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Don't do this to yourselves Priest.  Fire the company the produced it.  Make it against the law to ever view that video again.

#3  Alone truly a great song - VERY Emotional.

More to come

[Vaillant 3.0] Wednesday, July 16, 2008 11:40:11 PM

Call me weird...

But I think Prophecy should have the name of "Nostradamus", not the more popular, faster title track. I know it sounds weird, but it makes more sense if you read the lyrics to both songs. Prophecy (lyrically at least) sounds like something that accurately describes the man better than the title song. Its written almost like Hellrider, Painkiller, Sinner, among others, in the first-person. Plus, since Prophecy gives a general idea of who Nostradamus was and what he did (and it does say, "I am Nostradamus!!"), the name change to "Nostradamus" would sound more appropriate, IMO.

[Etarholet] Sunday, July 13, 2008 7:21:35 AM
To sum it all up: A MASTERPIECE.
[Aikman (Matt Frost)] Thursday, July 10, 2008 4:47:51 AM

[ZaNMaTo] Thursday, July 10, 2008 1:02:10 AM
Nostradamus is a musical and conceptual masterpiece. The orchestration is so very powerful.
[Jeanine] Wednesday, July 09, 2008 11:21:28 PM
I have to say I am waking up with these songs playing in my head.  Exiled is a great song.  There are so many intricate melodies being played on this CD. Judas Priest define the word artist.
[Chris 15363] Wednesday, July 09, 2008 9:51:29 PM

I think Nostradamus is a brilliant Judas Priest Album... It is so Polished and fined tuned... Glenn and K.K. used so many different unexpected Guitar tones. Rob Halford sounds amazing and I am glad he didn't use his high pitched voice much.

But I also think Glenn and KK overdid the dramatic intros...(interludes) some songs just don't need it... Peace is not necessary, Calm before the Storm is not necessary and even songs without interludes like Death and Persecution should have started with the main riff instead of the mellow part. Classic Judas Priest masterpiece songs like SFV, Grinder, Painkiller, Rapid Fire, Hot Rockin, Freewheel Burning, Jawbreaker... they all start out fast and furious and Judas Priest needs to get back to that. agressivness.

[Mr. Dave Genocide] Tuesday, July 08, 2008 7:18:11 PM

After reading over some reviews of A.O.R. on the JP Info Page...
I'm saying that they need to go back to the Metal they are known for.

I enjoy Nostradamus, don't get me wrong . . .
But I believe they need to get back to Heavy Metal, and forget about this orchestration . . .

IMO, but I know others agree.

Long live the Priest Beast!

[Turtle44] Sunday, July 06, 2008 7:15:59 PM
This is a different direction for Priest. It is very hard to get used to this cd. Alot of slow parts that I really don't like. But have to admit that it isa different direction for Priest..
[Metallark] Thursday, July 03, 2008 6:22:10 PM
The more you listen the better it gets. I loved it. I did burn a scaled down version taking out many of the short intros and recorded the meaner-heavier songs. It made a great driving CD. ALONE I felt was the one that really grabbed me.

There's a few standout tracks in my mind, but I still have to "get used to" the album as a whole, as it is an epic story.  I can't wait to see this whole thing played out in a theater!
[Redman] Thursday, July 03, 2008 2:10:36 PM
I think Nostradamus is a great album, but it really needs to be listened whole through, I think. That's how it works the best. That can be a good thing too, but... I would have liked the classic style better... just bunch of good songs that nicely fit together in style (like in AOR for example). If I would like someone else to listen to the Priest, I wouldn't tell him to listen to the Nostradamus because I couldn't recommend any songs from it. But I do like the album. I've listened to it whole through many times, allthough mostly while doing something else at the same time so I still have no idea which song is which. I recognize Death, Prophecy and Nostradamus... maybe Alone as well (when I've listened to it some time) and Revelation when I hear the solos, but that's about it. Kind a sums it up well. Works as a whole, but the songs aren't so memoriable alone.

I will add my two cents in a day or two.  Keeping in mind, a fricken lemming I am NOT; a somewhat educated, free thinking, individual - who owes nothing to anyone - I AM

I dont see much love for Exiled!! was the first track that really hit me. been listening to it flat out for 2 weeks or so now, and wow it just keeps growing on me, its fantastic. I just hope everyone gives it a real good listen, the more priest the better!! P&P is currently my fav track to listen to. And I thought I was happy listening to Operation mindcrime..this album blows it away! Keep up the good work priest. And Cant wait to see them live in Melbourne!!

TOTALLY right Kit.. with the old piano accompanyment and acoustic guitars.. makes me think of Priest circa 1975. This album has a bit of everything, all their talents learned over the years put into one showcase.
[Brent Robinson] Wednesday, July 02, 2008 9:54:16 AM
I agree with you KIT KAT - as far as I am concerned, this album was a long time coming. They have been away from that style for so long and this dis is sort of a rediscovery for them. Can't wait for the Montreal show - I wish Glenn all the best with his recovery!

Keep The Faith...

I bought the CD a few days ago,,,, is it just me or what.  I hear a lot old style Priest on it.  Even the way Rob sings on the CD,  just reminds of what he sung on the first 3 albums. I have always liked Rocka Rolla, Sad Wings, Sin After Sin.I don't know maybe it's just me.  But I do like it. Everybody's saying that it's a new direction, if you ask me I think they come full circle.

I was planning on leaving and going to bed.  Then I got involved in reinstalling NHL 2008 on my laptop and somehow ended up going to bed at 1am, much to my wife's annoyance.

I just watched the movie "300" this weekend and during that movie I kept thinking of fhe song "War" throughout the whole thing.
[Jeanine] Sunday, June 29, 2008 9:46:43 PM
Persecution is running through my head right now.  I have been waking up thinking of these songs.  LOVE IT!!
[Before The Rage] Sunday, June 29, 2008 5:15:22 PM
I've heard the album a couple times now and many of the songs are growing on me, however I think there are too many soft/short intros

Thanks.  That was exhausting.  I haven't "analyzed" that much music in a long time.  And that's a lot of music.  A bit better than an hour and a half !
[Lidija] Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:00:35 AM
I agree, not that I'm out of here in 13 mins, lol, but about the review.  Tim nailed it, clear and straight.

On a positive note, friggin' be-a-u-ti-ful guitar work on "Future of Mankind" !   Great choices, awsome tone.  Perfect !
[TIMBONI] Saturday, June 28, 2008 7:37:29 PM
Not really.  I sent my oldest son off for 3 weeks to Vegas and he's only 12 !  We start young around here.

Ok, now I have an issue.  I think that "Nostradamus" and "Future of Mankind" are in the wrong order.  "Future of Mankind" should have come first and "Nostradamus" as more of a narrative of the man should have come last.  Especially with it's strong and abrupt ending to wrap up the entire story ( album   .  .  .  sorry, CD )
[spapad] Saturday, June 28, 2008 7:36:18 PM
Wow, that sounds like the dumbest thing I ever said, but it's true.

Let the horns sound, it's "Nostradamus" !  Now the drama of the song makes sense.  On it's own, it sounds odd.  After the entire experience it all makes sense and now the sonic assault !
