That's my story too, my big brother. We would get home from school, parents at work, and he would put on his stereo blasting all these cool bands. I couldn't help but pay attention to what was comming out of the speakers. I would ask him about who these groups were, and although he didn't want his little sister bugging him, he would tell me about them. Sometimes when he wasn't home, I would sneak into his room to look at the albums. I was amazed at some of the covers- these beautiful pieces of artwork, I was hooked. He started me on the path and introduced me to some of my alltime, lifetime favorites that I still listen to today. My sister on the other hand hated the stuff, and I remember she was throwing away a box of things one day. I asked her what she was getting rid of, she said see for yourself. Amongst other things were record albums. I showed them to her thinking she made a mistake, and to my surprise she said, "no mistake, I don't like them, they're garbage." I couldn't believe my ears! I saved each and every one from the trash that day. The albums are long since worn out and gone but the memory remains. When I was 14 my oldest sister got married, and my new bro-in-law was big into hard rock and hair metal. He was into AC/DC, Motley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister and bands along that line. I was helping them move into their new house and saw his cassette collection. I had never really seen any hard rock or hair metal album covers. (I'm sure I had seen them, but not paid any attention.) I saw cassettes by AC/DC, Motley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister and so on and I thought to myself (I know this is terrible to say now, lol) but I thought "Wonder what kind of mess that is?" So I went on moving furniture and such. Later on that day, when everyone was resting from moving, he put on some AC/DC, I can't remember for sure now which album, but I believe it was Highway To Hell. I had never heard anything like it (I listened to all country then, as terrible and lol inducing as that may be, lol). So obviously the AC/DC was like something from outer space compared to country music. I had to admit that it sounded kind of cool though. So, I asked my bro-in-law "What is that?" He said, "This is AC/DC brother." I said "That sounds kind of cool." He said "Well, let me make you a compilation cassette of AC/DC songs." And I said then "Well, I don't know man." He said "I'm gonna do it brother." (He always has called me brother). So, I said "OK." Sveral days later when I saw him again and he gave it to me, I listened to it after I got home. I found it amazing, and it sounded awesome. I was really intrigued, and awed by it, and I asked him what other bands he had like that. So then, he gave me a compilation cassette with Motley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Guns & Roses, KISS, Van Halen, and a few other bands on it. I thought that was amazing too, and haven't listened to country a day in my life since then. The rest of the story of how I got into harder metal is this. My bro-in-law for whatever reason, never liked harder metal like Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Accept, and so on for the true classic metal bands. I have never understood why, but he only liked AC/DC and hair metal. One day I saw a Hit Parader magazine with Motley Crue and Ratt on the cover. I said to myself "Hey they are some of the bands on the comp cassette Tom (my bro-in-law) gave me." I bought the magazine and somewhere in it I saw Defenders Of The Faith listed. I thought the cover looked awesome, so I got the Defenders cassette. I was in awe of the harder metallic sound, and I thought it was the best sound ever. I kept buying Priest albums afterwards. I kept buying Hit Parader, Guitar World, Guitar One and so forth and found out about all the classic bands, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Accept, Dio, Testament, Motorhead and so on, and started in on a metal album buying spree. I let my hair grow out down past my shoulders (where it still is today) and have been one of the metal faithful all these years. I know that was a long story, but I wanted to share it here and also read other stories from you guys and girls. Edited at: Thursday, September 04, 2008 6:14:13 PM |

I started when I was 6 years. My parents were not very keen to hear rock, but if my uncles. So my first album was SIN AFTER SIN of Judas Priest, then I gave away the KILLER of iron maiden, and finally each month if I got good grades in school gave me that I wanted to.
At first my parents did not thank you very much being so small that I listen to these discs and less that music, but when I came adolescence (rebelion era ) they could not do much to put in what they heard, I think it was too late for them.
So I took many years listening to rock, heavy and the entire roll. I am a person who buys the music and hear many times because I like to make my own comparisons in terms of other discs in the same band or genre that I have. |

My oldest cousin and my youngest aunt were the rockers in the family. In the early-mid 70's they were big on bands like Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent and Bad Company. I would always be staying nights and weekends at their places and were always playing new albums and getting drunk and having friends over, I loved the atmosphere and never wanted to go home!!!
That was fine 'til I heard Priests' Burnin' Up and the rest of Hell Bent For Leather and I was lost forever in the world of Metal!!! I was a little kid, maybe 8 or 9, and there was a garage sale up the road. My little brother, older sister, and I walked down to see what we could find. I think mom gave each of us a quarter.
I found this cool-looking 12" record with monsters on the cover. My sister told me to get this K-Tel (remember them?) record instead, because the monster record was scratched (she probably liked some of the songs on the K-Tel record - Star Power it was <grin>)
Anyway, the KISS single Christine Sixteen was on it. At the time I didn't like it, but fast forward about 3 years and I dig the record out and played it again. I thought it was all pretty crap except for - you got it - that KISS song. So I bought Love Gun on cassette.
I quickly got into more bands like Iron Maiden (Seventh Son was my first) and of course, Priest. |

As cheesy as it sounds...Mom. She's a longtime Def Leppard fan (and eccentric). When I was 15, she took me to a show 3 hours away on a school night. She thought it was hilarious when my brother emerged as the scary '90s death metal dude in high school. She let him pierce things, wear baggy pants and offensive t-shirts, but drew the line at borrowing her Van Halen CDs. Now she stays home and watches concert DVDs and he's a polo-shirt-wearing fundie. Man, do I miss those days. |

I WAS 8 OR 9 AT THE TIME & MY MOM WENT IN THE HOSPITAL FOR SURGERY--THE HOSP DIDN'T ALLOW 8 YEAR OLDS TO VISIT SO I STAYED WITH MY BROTHER WHILE MY DAD VISITED MY MOM
I MUST HAVE GOTTEN ON MY BROTHER'S NERVES BECAUSE HE TOLD ME TO GET HIS RECORD PLAYER OUT & PLAY SOME RECORDS AS LONG AS I SHUT UP
THE FIRST ONE WAS "STORIES" & I REALLY LIKED " BROTHER LOUIE" BECAUSE UP UNTIL THEN I ONLY LISTENED TO GOSPEL & COUNTRY ( I HAD NO IDEA ROCK / METAL EVEN EXISTED )
THE VERY NEXT ALBUM I PICKED UP WAS KISS & THAT WAS IT--I WAS IN LOVE WITH THE MUSIC & I HAVEN'T LOOKED BACK SINCE
THAT WAS THE START OF MY REBELLION |

I thought this would be a great topic, and I didn't see it anywhere so I put it here for everyone. Here is my story of becoming one of the metal faithful.
