who are the true metal gods?

[metal12] Tuesday, August 30, 2011 7:15:40 PM
I love both of them. I started to listen to Maiden more in the recent years. I have been more familiar with the Priest music much longer even tho I have heard the band name Iron Maiden aboout the same time. Waaaay back in the 80s. Both are great band IMHO, really can not compre the two as they offer different presentation style. I am in the Priest site, so I guess I am supposed to say PRIEST ~!!!

HAAAA!! First, thanks for that "Chong" to my "Cheech," HRMG. I was holding my breath (pun intended) for someone to follow up with the "what is the difference with respect to that Maiden album" comment.

Second, yeah. What the hell else do you call it? LOL! So we can trace the term to at least the south-east of Michigan. Commonplace where I grew up. Never heard it around here, now that you mention it...

Now off topic - Guido, you call it ding-dong-ditch too? When I used that term, most people had never heard of that before! I was beginning to think it was a G.R. term or something.

I think Maiden got the upper hand on Priest round about 1986 when they released the "Somewhere In Time" album, which (IMO) was the superior guitar synth experiment to "Turbo".

Maiden then consolidated this with the very successful concept album which was "Seventh Son", while Priest tried to regain lost ground with "Ram It Down".

By 1990 Priest had managed to regain the upper hand (& how) with the phenomenal "Painkiller" album, while Maiden seemed to be running out of ideas with "No Prayer For The Dying" (the first album without Adrian Smith on guitar).

Then tragedy strikes Priest with Rob leaving, but all is not lost as Bruce then decides to leave Maiden - so things are equal again.

Both bands release inferior works during this mid to late 1990's period, but the real difference is when Rob & Bruce decide to return.

Maiden get a good running start with "Brave New World" coming out in 2000, a good five years before Priest's "Angel Of Retribution" (which itself comes out two years after Rob's return, and also Maiden's 2nd reunion album "Dance Of Death").

Then again in 2006 Maiden release one of their most successful albums ever in "A Matter Of Life & Death", while two years after that Priest put out the luke warm recieved concept "Nostradamus" and don't even tour it properly.

Priest now seem to be losing fans, while Maiden are playing to around 25% more fans with each tour.

2010 comes & Maiden release "The Final Frontier", while Priest announce that their next "Epitaph" tour (with no album in support) will be their last (world tour), and to make matters even worse in 2011 annouce that this will be without K.K. Downing as well.

Priest ruled the 70's. Shared the 80's. Got lost in the 90's & have been left standing ever since.

Just seen both Priest and Maiden in the last 2 weeks.Although Maiden always put on a good show, many of the songs from the last few albums are long winded sagas which are technically very good I suppose, but I can't get interested in them. As they played at least 5 or 6 of them it took up a good chunk of the set.I enjoyed the Priest show much more.

I can play a judas priest track any time & enjoy it, whereas I have to be in the mood for iron maiden.
[Sven65] Sunday, July 31, 2011 8:24:33 AM
Does Judas Priest plan on adding dates for shows in the North East part of the US ( Massachusetts ) ?
It's unfortunate cuz Maiden skipped this part of the country last year as well. I had to drive to NJ to see them.

My collection of Iron Maiden songs is not as complete as my Judas Priest collection but from what I have heard many Iron Maiden songs seem to have some relation to a battle of some kind, whether it be "Run To The Hills" or "The Trooper". Judas Priest has a multitude of different topics in their songs. Rob Halford is the best singer in heavy metal. Bruce Dickinson is second only to him. Rob has always had more of a range than other metal singers.

Hi Badactress. There is nothing one-dimensional about Iron Maiden's music. In fact, the appeal of Maiden is that the songs have layers and layers of interest. I'm not really into the years when Dickingson was out of IM but even then the songs were not completely flat.
I started listening to metal like many others: with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and they both took me to extraterrestrial landscapes.

However, if you do a Iron Maiden VS Metallica comparison, now I have to say that Iron Maiden are better, period.

Hi Nupe!
After reading your comments, I have no fears/qualms about passing over the Ripper years.  I don't like the more modern metal sound (no fan of Metallica, either!)  And Rob's songwriting is something that has always struck some kind of resonance with me, so, glad I didn't miss anything there! Also - while might like 2 or 3 songs by IM, I've never been enough of a fan to shell out anything for a CD or concert tickets for them.  Priest all the way!

[Nupe The Ripper] Monday, June 20, 2011 3:39:14 PM
The Ripper Years are quite modern-sounding compared to the classic Priest albums. They sound quite trashy, and Demolition even has a few industrial metal influences in it, lol. I don't like the more modern sound (if I did I'd be listening to Metallica) and quality-wise they're pretty much crap; they're really missing the songwriting ability of Rob. And, of course Tim uses a slightly lower range than what Rob has ever had so hat also makes it feel different.

Try before you buy, if you're asking me.

Oh, and my reply to this topic is pretty obvious. I've never ever gotten into Maiden, there's just something in their sound that I don't like.

Hey Badactress - I'm LMFAO, because, like you, I've never listened to anything from the Ripper years.......quite possible out of loyalty to Rob.  To me, it just ain't Priest without him - his voice IS what Priest is to me.  I'm sure there are many people that would say that's a pretty dumb way of thinking and I should give Tim Owens a chance, especially since I've been voicing my displeasure at fans who don't want to give Richie Faulkner a chance, but to me, the vocals are the first and last thing that I associate with a certain band...the music and musicians are still a hugely important part of the whole sound, but for me it's Rob or nothing!

[badactress] Monday, June 20, 2011 2:31:23 PM
Love them both, but Priest is definitely the more challenging and intelligent musically of the two. Maiden are purely bombastic and chest beating one dimensional metal. Which is great! However Painkiller blows every other band away on that front, and then Priest will hit you with a crushing ballad that tears at your heartstrings.. or they'll do something crazy and uplifting that just fills you with joy. Haha ok I'm going to stop before I get carried away! I vote Priest! :)

You know what though.. I've never heard a single song.. not even one note from anything that they did with Ripper. If anyone is still reading my ramling.. Are "the ripper years" worth trying? Do they come close to classic priest? I just can't imagine Priest without Rob. My ears close up at the thought of it!!

buenas tardes soy de san sebastian, tengo 44 años y llevo 30 escuchando heavy, respecto a esta pregunta yo no tengo ninguna duda, judas son los mejores,un saludo.
[Jorggee] Monday, June 13, 2011 6:12:47 PM

My answer is clearly Judas Priest.

Just listen at their Riffs, are far more sticky and complex, the drumms are unbelivable and Rob's voice is simply Iconic

But what truly gives somme points to Judas, are the Ballads they write, "Angel" Or "Lost Love" have really touched my soul.

[ronjah] Tuesday, April 05, 2011 12:51:09 AM
I can't choose either but if Imust judge each man by his latest efforts... The last maiden show I saw (Final Frontier) only had ! tune from the upcomming disc el dorado or whatever, don't get me wrong great show (Molson Amphetheater T.O) but now I see why, the album has to "grow on you" . I hardly think that Priests' next release (final?) will have to "grow on me"
[nick2584] Monday, March 21, 2011 5:02:09 PM

Both bands are great but priest is better more heavier better guitar playing and better vocals plain and simple without priest there is no maiden

[rssparks] Wednesday, March 16, 2011 9:17:48 PM
both great bands, Priest is in my opinion a little more dynamic and musically creative than maiden, but cant go wrong with either band

The older I get the less inclined I am to even say I have a favorite band.

Judas Priest!

So much Maiden hate here. I love both Priest and Maiden. Both are incredibly talented, and make music that really clicks with me. Judas Priest is of course my favorite band of all time though. As is for many others here of course, considering this is the Priest forum.

LOVE THEM BOTH BUT I HAVE TO SAY PRIEST ONE THING I DONT LIKE ABOUT MAIDEN IS THE WAY A LOT OF THERE CHORUSES ARE SUNG FOR EXAMPLE THE CHORUS ON THE FINAL FRONTIER JUST SOUNDS STUPID TO ME

I like Priest more than Maiden based on that I like more entire albums by Priest. But Maiden is still really good, some of the greatest guitarists ever.

Those are my favorite bands... but obviously I preffer JP! They make me feel a sensation that IM doesn't, I don't know what exactly it is but is a huge difference... and I've already seen both of them!

I am wondering that since I've known and heard many songs from both of them...
But I can't answer and I think that the answer changes every time you listen one of them...

Priest is the ultimate heavy metal band............. but I like Maiden too

I see it like this. When you witness Maiden live performing "Hallowed Be Thy Name," it is magical. You cant really comprehend what you are seeing and hearing. It is amazing to say the least. On the flipside, When you witness Priest live performing "Victim of Changes," it can feel like you got hit in the face with a sledgehammer. It is that powerful. So the difference between the two is really what you prefer. Do you want to watch a show in amazement, or have the metal come crushing down and knock you out? I prefer Priest, because they are a more powerful band. Edited at: Friday, February 04, 2011 5:51:07 PM
