Well i guess i should have called it The 2 bands that have kept to the same sound and have stayed alive doing it. So many other bands had to change to make it out of the eighties. Few did it, well without out drastically changing their sound. I still feel AC/DC is just rock, to me, id say stuff like pearl jam and godsmack and that kind of stuff is hard rock. AC/DC just plain rock! What other band has really survived the death of a lead singer especially one as insanley talented as Bon Scott. They did it though, and they're the biggest rock band in the world
(fuck U2

Motorhead is the worlds loudest band. So now doubt they're one band that always first comes to my mind when thinking about true heavy metal.
30 years same sound, still kicking ass!!!!

I'm prone to agree here....both bands never wavered or stepped outside of their respective styles and kept delivering consistent material, all of which still stands on its own today.

Having said that though, I think the reason I put Priest on such a loftier 'plane'  is due to their willingness to experiment and change their approach while keeping their style within the metal realm.      Priest definitely have a progressive edge to their creativity.

For Rock, I would have to say Led Zeppelin as my top choice but only just barely. But Priest IS the Definition of Heavy Metal.

This is a tough question to answer Dime...if you want to talk about true RnR, I'd probably say the Stones, as you didn't say Hard Rock...to me, AC/DC sounds exactly the same now as they did back in the day, and is a good choice...it's just that the Stones have been doing it a number of years longer and for no reason other than that would I disagree with AC/DC...they would be #2 in my book...In a way, the same can be said about Mötörhead, they sound the same now as back in the day...and I do believe you said define Heavy Metal...I don't think they are in the top 5 as far as defining Heavy Metal, but they have stayed true to their sound...in a way, the same can be said for Priest in the fact that they've stayed true to not being repetitive...and I think Priest have been the definition of Heavy Metal since they broke out the leather and put a Harley on stage...they unarguably defined the look of Heavy Metal, and that has stayed true for 30+ years now, and are still stereotyped to this day...again, a very good question and you'll get as many different responses as there are posters'...

who gets my vote?

AC/DC AND MOTORHEAD!!!!

Seriously who can argue that AC/DC has pretty much kept true rock alive into the 21st century. Every album they put out kicks ass, and they have kept their distinct sound for decades. Along with Motorhead, keeping the same heavy sound and rawness that helped create a legend all their own. Lemmy is a heavy metal god hands down.
