Both albums are great!! but.....if i had to take one with me on a desert  island (i hope this doesn't happen lol) it would have to be Killing machine. I think on the whole the songs are better but i love both albums

Those two albums are different realms of priest. I Do not compare. They serve the purpose equally well, either one.

My fave is 'Killing Machine'(as HBFL is called everywhere else in the world 'cept the US),and I'll tell you why. I'm 44,and the very first concert I saw in person was the mighty Priest!  Way back in November of '79,I was a very impressionable 14 year old. My buddy Dave got tickets to see-wait for it-
KISS,which was his favorite band,(they were on the 'Dynasty' tour) and he asked me if I wanted to go with him.(it was at the Ampitheatre in Chicago-
lovely neighborhood) Of course i accepted, and I asked him if there was another band playing. He said 'some band from england called Judas Priest-never heard of em'.(Neither had I,to be honest). The day of the show arrived, and I was so excited!!  We got our seats (14th row from the stage),
and we spent the time before the show just soaking up the atmosphere-
lots of pot being smoked..etc. Then, the lights went down,and.....here comes Priest...smoke,lights,and I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
From the moment they lit into 'Exciter' to the last chord of 'Starbreaker',
I was hooked!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They basically did the set that you hear on 'Unleashed',and from that moment on,Priest was MY band. (BTW,KISS
was not very good). The next day,I went to my local record shop and found
the UK import of 'Killing Machine',and the rest is history............ Thanks for letting me relate my experience.

Stained Class is THEORETICALLY a better record but i'm going to go with Hell Bent For Leather. This really was the flame that lit the priest fire and got the ball rolling. The image was born with this one. Plus growing up I always dug it alot more. Stained Class is amazing though
[agus darmaya] Saturday, November 14, 2009 3:44:36 AM
Stained.....? Hell BFL........? hmmmmmmmm。。。。。I can‘t argue.....but JUDAS PRIEST is always the best......!!!!! I love it all。。。。。。。。。!!!!!!!!

Stained Class is my favourite album.

[TampaMetalChick] Saturday, August 22, 2009 9:32:40 AM
Stained Class has a lot of great songs, but Hell Bent for Leather is my favorite of the two!
[british.steel] Wednesday, July 29, 2009 4:15:34 PM
HBfL had some good songs but isnt a very "consistent" album...and nowhere near as good as Stained Class.
[metalbiker21] Tuesday, July 28, 2009 9:01:20 PM
Stained Class for me, I played it nonstop for weeks, when I first got it!!......Killing Machine(HBFL) is a cracker too!
[priest rules the world] Tuesday, July 07, 2009 11:40:43 AM
its hard because both are great and songs like hell bent for leather , delivweing the goods , exciter, beyond the realms of death are just kicking asses xD
but my favourite is Stained Class
[dsfulker] Tuesday, June 30, 2009 2:38:00 PM
Got to admit, I don't have either of these - YET. But I've heard a few of the tunes from the "Best Of" albums. So I can't say which one's better for now.

Stained Class isn't as consistent as Killing Machine, imo.

However, Stained Class f-ing wins for two reasons:

Exciter. HELL YEAH.

Beyond the Realms of Death. Second best Judas Priest song for me.
[Necroticist] Sunday, June 28, 2009 5:11:48 PM
Hell Bent For Leather album was originally called 'Killing Machine' - that's when it was released in UK....

Here is a photo from the Stained Class era!!!

Hey Jimmy.....I didn't think that Evening Star was "that bad"....I don't think its a "great track" but again at the same time...I can handle it.....much better that "Evil Fantasies"........just my opinion though....your entitled to yours as well and I'm glad you voice your own opinion.....it will be taken in a respectful manor.

Ron, been ok, good to see you again.  I wasnt old enough to go to a strip club then, but havent been in a while.  last time was for my brothers stag in vegas.  the music then was no good.
[british.steel] Sunday, June 21, 2009 10:20:51 AM
Before the Dawn is very underrated, i used to hate it. but i listened to it more, and i began to really like it. I learned it on guitar and its just a fantastic song, the lyrics are so good in Before the Dawn. But stained class still wins!
[ron h] Sunday, June 21, 2009 9:02:06 AM
Hey there, HB, how ya been??  Well, that was a long time ago, around '85 if I remember right, back in my Marine days.  Outside most bases you'll find more than a fair share of strip clubs, and that's where and when I saw this (Camp Lejuene, NC...city of Jacksonville, to be exact!!)  Haven't been to one since I got out in '87!!

Burnin' Up in my opinion is ridiculous and embarrasing, but thats just me though.I know a lot of JP fans love this track....I just can't handle it. Its too poppy...sounds like something the Scorpions would of done.

Before The Dawn is not for me either....but not because its a ballad.....I think "Angel" off of Angel Of Retribution is way better than Before The Dawn.

Take On The World is to cheesy if ya think about it...........and Evil Fantasies is just dull and never captures my intrest let alone the subject matter(lol!).

[Dime/UNDER BLOOD RED SKIES!!!!] Saturday, June 20, 2009 6:18:00 PM
wow what a difference in opinion. Burnin up and Before the Dawn are 2 of my favourite songs off the album man.
[J.D. DIAMOND] Saturday, June 20, 2009 3:54:10 PM
Take On The World,  Burnin' Up,  Before The Dawn   and Evil Fantasies   are 4 tracks from Hell Bent For Leather that I think are under-par quality songs. They should of left those 4 songs off Hell Bent For Leather.

This is why I think Stained Class is that much better.

[Jeanine] Thursday, June 18, 2009 9:50:05 PM
obviously these are both great albums
[Diamond Jim] Thursday, June 18, 2009 5:20:44 PM
Basically Hell Bent For Leather destroys Stained Class in every way. Vocals, Riffs, Drums, Everything! So if you're standing there trying to make a decision between the two then go for HBFL and you will not be disappointed.

Killing Machine (AKA hell bent for leather) wasnt commercial, i dont think. i used to think killing machine was better. but i think stained class wins easily cuz almost every song is just amazing, alot of my favorit songs r on there such as Excter, Beyond the realms, better by u better than me. but this may sound weird, but i rlly like before the dawn from killing machine. i just beautiful
[icecreamman] Thursday, June 18, 2009 2:49:14 PM
Stained Class wins easily,  Killing Machine seems... uh, well more commercal. Plus Stained Classis the 1st album to feature the classic Priest logo.

Because those implications of "murder" were too much to put in front of a country where everyone owns a gun! LOL!!! Seriously, the execs thought it to be offensive.

No worries, we got an extra song with G. Manalishi.

Stained Class for me!

Why is it called Hell Bent For Leather in the US?

In UK it's always been entitled Killing Machine. Far more metal!!
[scorpion01] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 1:18:49 PM
BOTH GREAT ALBUMS, BUT FOR ME IT IS STAINED CLASS. LOVE THE DRUMS ON THAT ALBUM. LOVE THE LYRICS TO SAVAGE, HEROS END, BEYOND THE REALMS OF DEATH  ETC...  I ALSO THINK ON STAINED CLASS THE SONGS WERE A LITTLE LONGER AND MORE CREATIVE. JUST MY OPINION.

BUT THEN AGAIN HELL BENT FOR LEATHER IS A GREAT ALBUM.

wow--tough choice----Stained Class had Exciter--Better By You, Better Than Me--& Beyond The Realms Of Death

Hell Bent For Leather had the title song that I liked --plus The Green Manalishi--Running Wild--Killing Machine & Before The Dawn

so I like both cd's but for different reasons--sorry but it's too hard to pick just 1 for me !!
[J.D. DIAMOND] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 4:17:29 AM

Stained Class is better.....I enjoy pretty much every song from this LP,while Hell Bent For Leather I do not like "Take On The World,  Burnin' Up,  Before The Dawn,  Evil Fantasies."  Never liked those 4 songs after all these years,I still don't.

iis a tough choice but if there was a gun to my head and i have to choose, i go with Hell bent..
but stained class is amazing
[Becks] Tuesday, June 16, 2009 9:25:55 PM
Hmmm, while they were both released around the same time, I find it hard to compare the two really. While they are both unmistakable Priest, these two albums showcase two different sides to the band. I love SC, but I also love KM (as it is known here instead of HBFL, LOL!). To me SC is what Priest is all about - good hard hitting heavy metal, in short. KM to me seems like Priest were still doing excellent heavy metal, but it was made more accessible to a non fan at the time. I'm not sure though. All I know is, I love both these albums almost equally, so I could never decide between the two! LOL!

Don't know if my facts are correct but these two albums came out at the same time? I have to say personally Stained Class blows away Hell bent for Leather. Although i really like Hell Bent, there are fewer overall insane songs. Stained Class from start to finsh MASTERPEICE. well IMO anyway.
