Palmer, try turning off your noise gate while your actually playing, those things are murder on the top end. Also consider switching to a more traditional overdrive or distortion pedal. I love the Boss DS-1, used it for a many years. Problem with those ultra heavy distortion pedals is they focus on the low frequencies. I played Marshall for many years, but always tube, I had the JCM 800 2205 model and then JCM 2500 SL-X, through two 412 cabs. I did and still use Ernie Ball super slinkies that run from a .042-.009, but I typically only tuned a half step down. the gauge you are using is great for the lower tunings as they handle the lighter tension better than the gauge I use do. You may not be a fan of Zakk Wylde, but look at what he uses and that man has a wall of sound! Tone control wise, back your low end off and thicken up your mids, let your amp do most of the work.

Hi Folks I know a lot of people on this board play guitar. I was wondering if you guys could give me some help? I have a Marshall 100 mg fx. I've been mostly playing a epiphone sg special with a Seymour Duncan invader in the bridge. I use Dean Markley 12's for strings and tune to usually c and b. Right now I have it at d . My effects are a boss hyper metal/danelectro fish & chips 7 band eq/behringer ultra chorus uc-200/danelectro fab echo/boss harmonist ps-6/mxr smart gate. No matter what I do I find that my tone sounds too muddy no matter how much I adjust the eq or distortion.Even trying to adjust the gain, mid and bass doesn't seem to help. Can anyone give me some advice ? Maybe I have a crappy amp or I just have to keep fiddling around with the pedals and amp settings . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
