Yes, "Painkiller" was 5-6 years too late. While JP was sucking out to greed (see "Turbo" and "Ram It Down") bands like Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Megadeth, etc.. were expanding on the music laid down by JP (Tyrant, Exciter, Saints In Hell etc...) and continuing in that vein, became huge sells. JP were once the trendsetters, innovators and leaders in the metal sound, but like I wrote, they sucked out and tried to become radio friendly pop-rockers like Aerosmith, Motley Crue et. al. (search hair-metal bands). Granted, JP started moving to more radio-friendly music (shorter songs) with HBFL (Killing Machine), but JP was still HEAVY metal and the pop-rock songs were limited to 1-2 songs per album. "Turbo" was their first, full-blown, pop-rock album and ALOT of JP fans were turned off by their new sound and look! The look aped the music; lame! It took six years for JP to clear their heads and return to HEAVY metal with "Painkiller", but by that point JP was water under the bridge. Besides, "Painkiller" was NOT groundbreaking or trendsetting; by 1990 thrash had already run its course and was being replaced by even heavier music (see Death Angel, Death etc,,). "Painkiller" has its significance in that it was/is the heaviest rocking JP album, but by then JP had fallen off the metal boat and left behind. But, "Painkiller" was the right album for JP to make as proven then and now. "Turbo" and "Ram It Down" were not as proven then and now.
"Nostradamus", I don't know what JP was thinking with this release; and I am as confused with this as much as I was when "Turbo" was released. JP got the moniker of being "Metal Gods" by playing music LIKE "Metal Gods"! I just hope they have gotten this out of their system and will go back to being "Killing Machines" and "Delivering The Goods" ! |

Thrash scene was a decade before Painkiler.  By the time Painkiller came out, thrash was already going underground for the most part. A few american bands that have remained until today like Anthrax and Megadeth but others, more radical, faster, meaner and closer to their roots kinda seemed to dissapear from the radar. The change in the decade really changed metal for the better, away from the greedy corporations.
Nostradamus is very good, phenomenal even, and the one thing I miss in it is absolute massacre, especially by the end of it. I almost expected an all-out war of instruments to finish it off and counter the slower pace of the second cd: rattling cutlery, flying sinks, slamming guitars in the ground, cats fighting, dogs barking, fat lady holding on to the last note, thunder cracking, pigs squealing, Nostradamus laughing like a maniac, an earthquake rumbling and Ted Nugent shooting the keyboards with a shotgun, followed by a few shots of canon and a loud volcanic eruption and a nuclear blast.
But how it turned out doesn't bother me in the least.

I see it as something similar to the cinema release versions of the Lord Of The Rings films, as opposed to their much weightier Director's cut DVDs.
As for the missing tracks, well once you've grown to love the above you can re-incert them later, or visit them individually & see how they shape up having acclimatized yourself to this new world of the metal gods.

THE ANSWER - for all those still scratching their heads over the latest offering from JP is, I think, perhaps one caused by the pacing on the album.
It is, after all, very very long, with some considerable mid-paced / ballad-y numbers. My advice is to edit it down to a slimmer, meaner & faster 80mins (single disc) version.
Select the following running order on to a CDR, or ipod playlist etc, and hear a much more familiar, agressive & traditional metal-esq sounding release.

In my opinion nostradamus is different to any other cd they have done; in nostradamus someway they tell a story from the first song to the last, painkiller is a fucking heavy metal straight in the face album, different feelings.

Nice thread I was hoping it would come up, or I would have came up with it. Anyways....title track vs title track...Painkiller...but album vs album Nostradamus by far. Prophecy, Revelations, War, Death, Conquest, Persecution, Exiled, Alone, Visions, Nostradamus, Future Of Mankind...that's pretty much 11 amazing songs I love. Also...Nostradamus is an epic story. I prefer Nostradamus because it is so diverse and yet so metal. |

Nostradamus is cool, but Painkiller is a song that I can play when driving a car.. well, actually I can play it everywhere. I don't like it so much nowadays, but I used to like it a lot.. just heard it too many times. But it kicks ass.
Oh wait... you ment the albums? Hmm... Painkiller's bad side is that it doesn't have any calm songs really... Living Bad Dreams, yep.. but still...! My favourites from that album are A Touch of Evil, All Guns Blazing, Between the Hammer and the Anvil and One Shot At Glory.. all great tracks. Haven't heard Nostradamus, but I fear that it doesn't have that kind of songs... songs that are pure attitude, songs that I can play everywhere, anytime... you know. No good classic heavy metal songs like Big City Nights, Wheels of Fire (Priest), Revolution, You've Got Another Thing Comin', Rock You Like A Hurricane, Blackout (yea, lots of scorps in my list)... I mean, positive metal songs.. I fear that Nostradamus might be a lil' bit too dark... like Painkiller. But we shall see about that.. I get the album today.

| Personally, I don't think you can make any such comparisons. Nostradamus is so vastly different from anything that Judas Priest has done that it's like comparing a badass SUV (Nostradamus) vs a killer sports car (Painkiller). |

Both are incredible albums, its very hard to say. But I think creativly Nostradamus is better. The whole dramtic feel of it the story telling the way each song flows. Painkiller is great but for me the priest album list goes like this;
1. Nostradamus
2. Painkiller
3. Angel of Retribution
4. Screaming for Vengeance
5. Ram it Down
6. Turbo
7. Point of Entry
8. Defenders of the Faith
9. British Steel
10. Stained Class
11. Sin After Sin
12. Hell Bent for Leather
13. Sad Wings of Destiny
14. Rocka Rolla
15. Jugulator
16. Demolition
I know some would disagree but I think that this is there best album and I think that in time more will come to see that. |

As a single song Painkiller is better than nostradamus.
As a entire album Nostradamus is alot better imo, listend to the whole thing six times now & it just gets better every time, I think Nostradamus will be in my top 4 fav Judas Priest albums. |
