Gotta go with "Rocka Rolla" for this one.
How many times does this album get overlooked & yet when you listen to it there's some really good stuff.
One For The Road is a solid starter, Rocka Rolla is a pretty damn catchy single, Cheater is an excellent little rocker, Never Satisfied is an absolutely underrated Priest classic (now given some true exposure on the Epitaph tour) as is the mighty 8 minute epic that is Run Of The Mill, and even Caviar & Meths is a beautifully played throw-away.
For me The Winter Suite & Dying To Meet You(/Hero Hero) are the weakest tracks, but I can still listen to them with ease.
I've heard many a mention about the poor production, and yes there is an audible hiss, but aside from that I think the sound is just fine, especially for 1974. It's not metal, obviously, but for a debut album, by a band finding it's way it's a definate blues-y in places, rock classic!
There's even a heavier version of Diamonds & Rust on the CD, which certainly rivals the "Sin After Sin" version (& yes, I know it's technically from the "Sad Wings..." sessions). Edited at: Monday, September 26, 2011 12:41:09 PM |

I like Lochness also, it has a killer guitar riff. Good to see you're still lurking in the background Michael. Don't call Brian a pussy, that's sexist and derogatory towards women. Also anyone whose ever come second at anything might take offence toward your comment about him being a loser. As for calling me a nobody, that could be misconstrued, people who don't exist might take offence that you are using their status as a way to insult somebody else. It's not considered super offensive here, mind you we don't really have many Germans so I wouldn't know. Never used it personally. It's the German equivalent of calling a British person a Pom to us. But like I said, I've never really heard it used. Other than on American tv shows, hehe.

I thought you were pretty smart until that comment.
I guess there is nothing wrong with calling a black guy a n*gger either.
After all it was just another way of saying negro during the slave trade.
Kraut may be sour cabbage but it's still a derogatory comment towards Germans.
You don't like me for comments about police or religion but you're starting to come off as a racist and a homophobe.

Natural for a person who has one leg significantly shorter than the other. Ok so the ladies and JD don't think Starbreaker is a gay song, I still do. No-one's convinced me otherwise. It's good to have a debate about what we think songs are about etc.
I don't think I've actually answered the question about Priests most underrated album. In some respects I think Point of Entry is underrated, people think that album is full of Don't Go type songs (incidentally I like that song, it makes me laugh hehe) but it has some great songs on it, Heading out to the Highway, Solar Angels, Desert Plains etc. So in a way it is terribly underrated.
| | jimmyjames wrote: | | I think the Starbreaker is a gay guy who is opening up the gay lifestyle to guys who are confused about their sexuality. He does this by exposing them to a world that is vastly different to the one they are used to and one which will ultimately bring them happiness, should they decide to go his way. All the references to cruising, hand holding, stealing hearts and getting high aside that's basically what it's about. Whether or not you agree I'm glad that comment sparked some debate.
As for the album cover I'm surprised that the dark figure hasn't fallen over leaning on that angle and I love how the female figure at the front appears to be naked apart from her high heels. |

I'd love to hear that as well as Hell Bent for Leather, and also Killing Machine..............Obviously why I don't put forth a set list with only one song off each. Too hard to do!

Hell Bent for Leather I think is the most under rated album in the catalog, for me it has many songs that are so strong and I hope to hear live next time around! |

Probably Defenders of the Faith. It has such fantastic song like Freewheel Burning, Jawbreaker, Love Bites and of course The Sentinel. |

A little late for this discussion, I know, but I always thought of those two figures as sinners waiting for that door to open (IS it a door?). What could it contain? Maybe the paradise that the Starbreaker promised? Maybe it's something sinister? Maybe they both got screwed by that one "raw deal"? The world may never know. It's definitely a much gloomier album cover than the SWOD one.

I always thought Starbreaker was a Sci-Fi idea too, like a mystical being character or something of the sort....that shadow-shape-person on the left of the album I always thought was either the Starbreaker or the Sinner when I was 11 years old in 1981 when I bought the LP ha!

Not to mention the fact that Rob is really into Science Fiction. That's what I get from the song too, it's science fiction about a "savior" that will take us to paradise (or looking at it now, I suppose it could be about drugs?). And I agree completely Becks, just because Rob is gay doesn't mean every song he writes has homosexual undertones..... I'm really sick of fans thinking every song is gay now that Rob came out. Before no one ever thought they were, but now some people see it in every song. And even if it is, WHO CARES???

To me it's a typical Priest made up character song, some dude called Starbreaker taking people away to space or something 'star voyage to a new world, lightyear miles away' etc.
Bear in mind I am a very literal person, I don't read undertones very well, but in saying that I find it very hard on reading the lyrics to pick up any gay undertone. Just cos Rob is gay doesn't mean every crazy Priest song is about gay stuff LOL.

I never made that connection to be honest. And reading the lyrics again, I still don't LOL

I'd say that's the most overrated. Apart from Sinner and Dissident Aggressor the rest is pretty average.

Name "tons" of these songs with the "SLANT" towards the gay preference and not the ones written for both sexes....not just 3 songs...."tons"....?

I have to agree with JimmyJames, Priest has tons of gay "under-tones" (or is it over-tones?) in al LOT of their songs.
TRUE they are written for both sexes, but with a "slant" toward the gay preference.
Not sure about Starbreak.....though it would surprise me.
TONS of songs, just read the lyrics while listening and pretend you are Rob writing.

I don't want it to be gay, I just think it is. Priest have loads of gay songs, why not this one?

It has always been my experience that people determined to find something wrong with the lyrics in a song, always do because they read WAAAAAAY TOO MUCH into things, or take it completely out of context! People were hell bent on making Priest a "satanic" band way back when and the shit they told me the lyrics meant was absolutely hysterical! You WANT the song to be gay because Rob is gay and that's why you see it that way.

I think the Starbreaker is a gay guy who is opening up the gay lifestyle to guys who are confused about their sexuality.
