Yeah I don't don't like the producion quality on AOR either, Scott Travis sounds like a drum machine on some tracks. Bring back the sound of the 80's and early 90's.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by icecreamman from Sunday, August 14, 2011 8:42:36 PM)

Just came in from mowing the lawn and, as is the norm, had Priest on in my ears the whole time. Listened to all of Defenders and, while I did remember this convo about the drum machine during Heavy Duty (lol...ONLY then), I was actually gonna ask how many besides me typically stop The Sentinel to listen to the guitar solos at least twice before letting the song finish out? I mean, I can't be the ONLY one!

Just can't help myself. I have to stop the riding mower, take out and shuffle the iPod back a bit but, despite the hassle, almost invariably do. Maybe next time I'll listen to the drums. The production value as well.
[J.D. DIAMOND] Wednesday, August 17, 2011 5:06:28 PM
I agree,I like the production of Angel Of Retribution yet its not as open-clear/clean as Painkiller but these kinds of things are just irrelevant to me. Its like if the Turbo album were "re-recorded" with the world's best production ever heard on an album, its not going to change shit for me ya know....its like if ohhh its re-recorded in the same way the production was recorded on Painkiller so now I actually will like Parental Guidance? lol!  Its a joke Head Banger.

the quality of the music and songs is more important than the production.  I dont see any issues in the production of AOR anyway.

I agree with the drum sound on Defenders,i am sure it is a drum machine too!

Actually inside the remastered cd the notes on it mention "One bizzare memory was a mechanical drum machine we tried to use on one track...etc etc."
LOFL,try all the tracks!

That is too bad cause that album would of sounded awesome had it been a real drummer!
The drums is the only thing that i don't like about that album!

Yes Retribution doesn't have that "clean"  sound Painkiller has or whatnot ect...but for myself I have never given a shit about any of this type of production. I've heard "FAR WORSE" productions out there for what was supposed to be a decent production and Retribution isn't   "that bad"  in my opinion. Maybe its because I grew up listening to Venom in the early 80's and black/death metal where the production means very little as long as the sound is alright.

People keep saying if Allom produced Retribution it may have turned out cleaner, yet to me I think Retribution has a better production than Defenders Of The Faith does. I think the drums on Defenders sounds like a drum machine and to this day I belive that Dave Holland never played drums on the album at all but rather played during the Defender's tour instead, they just sound so fake to me.

Scotts drums on Retribution smoke the Defenders album by far,yet I rate Defenders at #5 all time and Retribution at #6. If they would of written a track like Demonizer in place of Lochness then I would of switched the two in my rankings. Just my look on it but I get what your saying.

HA! I thought he would! The only thing that prevents AOR from being higher up on the list is Roy Z's flat production. If it was an Allom produced album, well who knows. Hell Bent for Leather is so low becuase of the filler and becuase it has a great drop off of quality from its predecessor.

I wish I could say the same about Judas Priest so I envy you. I have 12 Priest studio albums,I don't own Turbo,Jugulator,Demolition or Nostradamus. Those 4 albums bother me.Jugulator is the best out of all 4 but I hate Ripper Owens's voice so it ruins it for me. Priest has been my #1 favorite band since 1981 so yeah I envy you. Interesting list, however Painkiller under Retribution I think Hellrider could bust a spring lose if he sees it ha!

Well "you" can put it on and "enjoy every time" but in 1986 I took that album and smashed it between my legs then chucked it out my window. Later I had to pick up the pieces in my back yard and that wasn't pleasant either. I hate the album just as much today as I did when i first heard it and I like posting how I hate the album.

There is an article I need to find I read a while back that Rob had even said that looking back he thought while the Turbo album had a few good tracks it was a disappointment to thier fans and he said at least a majority of the long time fans and how anything less than better on the album would of been a disappointment to himself and the band too.

which is another wording for how much Rob actually thinks it "is" a disappointment. I highly doubt he thinks this way of the Retribution album, not trying to change your opinion, just that mine sides in with Robs haha.

I find Turbo to be much more interesting than Angel of Retribution. Angel is the only standout track on the album IMO. Lochness could have been a Judas Priest classic but those lyrics... Serious and cheesy don't mix well. The rest is standard heavy metal fare, with some cool twin leads.
Turbo is commercial, yes, but it's actually quite original, something like progressive glam rock. And it being "of its time" is not a bad thing, it gives the album flavor. AOR is sanitized.

For me the stage cloths for Turbo are irrelevent because I heard the album in 1986 and fucking hated it BEFORE I actually saw them wearing those stupid lame fucking circus clown outfits,I actually thought they looked the same as Defenders tour but once I saw what they were wearing for the tour I about flipped out man!!!

Alright Hellrider(lol!) I'll never win here(not trying to either, just giving you a hard time haha!)  "0" skip tracks classic? Oh my god we think so far apart its not even funny...Parental Guidance to you is better than the whole Angel Of Retribution album besides Hellrider(the song).....man thats tough to read man I'll be honest with ya.....man I've got to bring out the dud hammer to match Guido sorry man lol!!!lol Hellrider!

(lol) ok ok,I was with a friend and went to somebody's house he knew and low and behold they were playing the Turbo concert "Priest Live!" from 1987 and I couldn't get out of there any quicker! Man just seeing it again reminds me of how terrible the album, stage cloths and tour really was.

This album is by far Judas Priest's worst and it is so unPriest-like,even nostradamus sounds more Priest than this. None the less I was sickened by watching the video and lucky enough we left in 20 minutes lol!  I suppose Angel Of Retribution sickens you in this same way,I get that but at least they didn't look like a bunch of lame trendy pretty boy big hair wanker posers on the Retribution tour! lol!

Turbo is anything but a good rockin album like "ZZ TOP". It reeks of over-commercialism and over produced. Locked In,Private Property,Parental Guidance don't have much energy to me as they have a keeping up with the jones' sound in 1986.ZZ TOP has never released anything this ridiculous. Judas Rising,Demonizer,Wheels Of Fire stop the shit out of these pussy songs.

So just what is it about the Turbo album you like so much better than Ram It Down, the stage cloths or the songs? Locked In,Private Property,Parental Guidance,Hot For Love you prefer over The Hellion/Electric Eye,Riding On The Wind,Bloodstone,Ram It Down and Heavy Metal? That just doesn't seem like you,is this your soft side?

Well,I'm definately not a fan of either Turbo or Nostradamus, but if I had to pick one at gun point I'd pick Nostradamus, the title track alone wipes the Turbo album off the map just that one song in my opinion.

Turbo has 9 songs,I could find 9 tracks from Nostradamus that can beat Turbo in quality so yeah to me there isn't anything worse than Turbo in my books haha!!

It just frys my ass big time the album does.....from the poppy tunes to the ridiculous image and stage cloths and big hair it was such a joke gone bad man,god I can't stand it hahahaha,I swore an oath back in 86' I would never listen to Priest again after the "T" album lol!!!

Actually Head Banger to me Painkiller DOES NOT sound americanized to me,never crossed my mind in 1990 or inbetween either so its hard for me to hear that.It was Jugulator that sounded americanized to me. And I also disagree with Metallian saying how it sounds like a "thrash" album?? No way in my opinion does Painkiller sound anything remotely close to "thrash"?

I've heard many people say this and for the life of me I can't find any  sounding parts in the entire Painkiller LP? Metal Meltdown is fast british heavy metal,Painkiller the title track is pure british heavy metal at its heaviest and All Guns Blazing sounds heavy metal to me.  Maybe to some people it does?

The only thrash sounding elements in Priest's history could be when Ripper sang the "Mulilate" part in the Jugulator song? No? Hummmm.  As far as Turbo....3 songs I can possibly tolorate...Out In The Cold,Wild Nights and Reckless.

But....6 songs...I just can't fathom how  Turbo Lover,Locked In,Private Property,Parental Guidance,Rock You All Around The World,Hot For Love can beat any other Priest album, even Nostradamus has better heavier metal songs on it,so does Demolition or any other Priest album in my opinion. It just goes down to the fact that its hard for me to understand why people like this LP but I must accept people like this big pile of bullshit hahaha!!!

I must admit though, people (Hellrider you included haha) rating Turbo higher than Angel Of Retribution is a slap in the fuckin face to me this weekend hahaha!! aarrghhhhh whyyyyyyyyyy!!!!! Nooooo!!!!!! lol

I have to admit that it does bring back both good and bad memories. I try only to think of the good, but I remember running to the store the day it was released and throwing it on the turntable the second I got home. I was extremely disappointed with it. I really couldn't believe what I was hearing. How the hell can you go from DOTF to THAT? But..... it did have the energy and feel of the times back then and for me those were good times. Turbo was the first Priest show that I ever went to, so that probably helps me not hate it as much as I would. Again, Out In The Cold is really the only song that I ever listen to and still love on that album. It is one of the few Priest albums that I never play and is at the end of my list as well, right next to Jugulator and Demolition.

Fuck man,sad sad sad!

Unlike some folks here that Turbo brings back memories of it playing on car stereos and shit, for me it just brings back saddness, dissappointment and people making fun of the so called "New Priest" in 86.

You are not alone JD,you are not alone!
I still remember that year and man was that a terrible year for metal.
As soon as Jan 1 1986 came metal as we knew it was all over and done with!
After an awesome asskicking album like Defenders they put out Turbo!
Ram it Down was ok and i liked Painkiller alot at first but the more i listened to it the more i felt like what Headbanger said!
They seemed more like an American Thrash band!

Turbo and playing on American Idol are the 2 biggest dissappointments i ever experienced being a fan of this band!
Actaully,25 years later and i still can't listen to Turbo, makes  a great coaster tho!

LOL!

The Defenders tour and album is the best, the music and the image and stage was awesome!
All the leather and studs!Awesome!
