Unfortunately that is NASCAR's way. Always trying to create a level playing field instead of rewarding innovation. The gas crisis in the 70's would have killed it anyway, but it would have been interesting to see what could have been. In the end, there can be only ONE King of the road!
Just think what this car could have done if Dodge had of been allowed to finish their R&D on the DOHC 426 Hemi. But since Ford & GM went crying to nascar about the "Winged wonder" & NASCAR buckled under rather than saying "Buck it up boys, build a badder car" rather than dictating some pathetic engine only for the aero cars or add weight to them if you run the Hemi so everyone else could compete. Not that the tires could have taken much more than the speeds they were reaching with this car but a little R&D from goodyear & a lower profile would have taken care of that quite nicely. What could have been, |

I've always loved the front ends on those Cougars ( pun intended ! ). Just looked so evil to me compared to anything else on the road at the time. |
