Tell Your Story Of Becoming A Metal Fan

That's my story too, my big brother. We would get home from school, parents at work, and he would put on his stereo blasting all these cool bands. I couldn't help but pay attention to what was comming out of the speakers. I would ask him about who these groups were, and although he didn't want his little sister bugging him, he would tell me about them.  Sometimes when he wasn't home, I would sneak into his room to look at the albums. I was amazed at some of the covers- these beautiful pieces of artwork, I was hooked. He started me on the path and introduced me to some of my alltime, lifetime favorites that I still listen to today. My sister on the other hand hated the stuff, and I remember she was throwing away a box of things one day. I asked her what she was getting rid of, she said see for yourself. Amongst other things were record albums. I showed them to her thinking she made a mistake,  and to my surprise she said, "no mistake, I don't like them, they're garbage." I couldn't believe my ears! I saved each and every one from the trash that day. The albums are long since worn out and gone but the memory remains.

Thank God for  big brothers  !!(well not all the time --most times they're pains in the butts )
I was raised on country & gospel--bluegrass etc but it was my brothers who got me into rock --I never knew Rock til I heard KISS --I Want To Rock N Roll All Night   & I thought that Satan had filled the air waves but fast forward to 3 decades later of listening to Rock/Heavy Metal & I'm still all right   --(I think--my brothers may have a different story to tell )

Man you just summed up my reasons for burying myself in hard rock / metal - it makes all them people drown out into the distance. *sigh of relief* .

I started when I was 6 years. My parents were not very keen to hear rock, but if my uncles. So my first album was SIN AFTER SIN of  Judas Priest, then I gave away the KILLER of iron maiden, and finally each month if I got good grades in school gave me that I wanted to.
At first my parents did not thank you very much being so small that I listen to these discs and less that music, but when I came adolescence (rebelion era ) they could not do much to put in what they heard, I think it was too late for them.

So I took many years listening to rock, heavy and the entire roll. I am a person who buys the music and hear many times because I like to make my own comparisons in terms of other discs in the same band or genre that I have.

My parents were music-heads, my dad leaned more towards metal.  I was listening to it since I was in utero pretty much.
They saw shows I can only dream of seeing.  I'm so gald my parents are badass, and like stuff that doesnt suck.

My first rock album was with The Runaways back when I was 9 or 10. The next one I got from my brother, KISS Destroyer. It sold me, and for 32 years Ive been addicted :o)
I first saw/heard Priest in 82 I think, on tv from Germany, Rockpalatz. Ive been a fan ever since. No one comes close.

My siblings got me into rock, my one brother introduced me to metal, I had a big crush on a guy in high school who was a metalhead so that was my start.

My oldest cousin and my youngest aunt were the rockers in the family.  In the early-mid 70's they were big on bands like Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent and Bad Company.  I would always be staying nights and weekends at their places and were always playing new albums and getting drunk and having friends over, I loved the atmosphere and never wanted to go home!!!
That was fine 'til I heard Priests' Burnin' Up and the rest of Hell Bent For Leather and I was lost forever in the world of Metal!!!

I got into metal in the most rounadabout way possible, I think.

I was a little kid, maybe 8 or 9, and there was a garage sale up the road.  My little brother, older sister, and I walked down to see what we could find.  I think mom gave each of us a quarter.

I found this cool-looking 12" record with monsters on the cover.  My sister told me to get this K-Tel (remember them?) record instead, because the monster record was scratched (she probably liked some of the songs on the K-Tel record - Star Power it was <grin>)

Anyway, the KISS single Christine Sixteen was on it.  At the time I didn't like it, but fast forward about 3 years and I dig the record out and played it again.  I thought it was all pretty crap except for - you got it - that KISS song.  So I bought Love Gun on cassette.

I quickly got into more bands like Iron Maiden (Seventh Son was my first) and of course, Priest.

As cheesy as it sounds...Mom. She's a longtime Def Leppard fan (and eccentric). When I was 15, she took me to a show 3 hours away on a school night. She thought it was hilarious when my brother emerged as the scary '90s death metal dude in high school. She let him pierce things, wear baggy pants and offensive t-shirts, but drew the line at borrowing her Van Halen CDs. Now she stays home and watches concert DVDs and he's a polo-shirt-wearing fundie. Man, do I miss those days.

Had cousins that were a lot older than me, always listening to ac/dc, priest, maiden, sabbath, led zep etc, can't go past that stuff, it's still the best.
