Tipton and Downing are the greatest guitar duo of all time - competing perfectly and then playing in harmony together. Like twins where the other one knows what is gonna come next and how to respond to his actions...

Uncomparable - one and only!

I posted something similiar to this long ago in the individual sections, something along...
Glenn is smooth and fluid  the driving force behing the riffs....and...
KK is the speed demon shredder of the two
My take is this...
Glenn  is a (to quote) a very tasteful player that his phrasings blend so well together like a vocal line, very articulate.
KK  has a more metal type of approach using  his speed, and tremelo techniques,  his phrasing is predictable depending on the key and tempo, but he never cease`s to amaze me with what he does. His solo`s always fit the mood of the song so well.
I love these guys equally, and there would be no Priest  with only one of them. So here`s to our Metal Gods, may they always be making the music that they choose and that we will obviously enjoy!!

Yes, it has never been a versus situation where the soloing is concerned with this duo.

their styles are welcome complement to each other, and adds to the dimension of this thing called Judas Priest!

Hey, thanks! I'm new but very psyched. Already bought my first guitar.

Speaking of Sinner...what is Rob whispering? That has been driving me nuts.

I really couldn't pick one over the other--they are so unique in their own way--but when they play together --look out !!

IF TOU LISTEN TO THE 2 SOLOS IN BEYOND THE REALMS OF DEATH, YOU CAN GET A GOOD FEEL FOR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.

THEY ARE BOTH EXCELLENT ALTHOUGH I THINK GLENN HAS A CLEANER MORE POLISHED SOUND. BUT SOMETIMES YOU NEED THAT WILD ALL OVER THE FRET BOARD SOUND AND THAT IS WHY THEY COMPLEMENT EACHOTHER SO WELL.

SOME WHERE I REMEMBER HALFORD DESCRIBING GLENNS SOLOS LIKE HE IS PLAYING IN A SENTENCE. HE STARTS HIS SCALE STOPS AT THE END LIKE A PERIOD AT THE END OF A SENTENCE THEN STARTS AGAIN.

Glenn is THE soloist of the world!!  No one comes close when he puts his passion and emotions in to his playing.
It almost makes me cry at times
...  The man is my GOD and I bow in his honour :o)

You honestly learn to tell the more you listen to priest.  You'll find KK to be a maniac with the whammy bar!!  I think the 2 are VERY close on the skill level but I have found Tipton to maybe be a tad bit faster than KK.  Welcome to the Priest Nation btw.  No turning back now!!  ; )

I'm a new fan too and haven't fully worked this out. When you hear one just go completely nuts playing fast and ferocious, it's usually KK. Glenn is a bit more laid back. But there are some songs where I just can't tell.

I think sometimes it might even be both - one starts the solo and then they switch.

Very well put. I've thought the same about their styles of play. I also think Tipton makes it look too easy sometimes, much like Blackmore. Not because he wants to, just the way he is i guess. If you've every seen Rainbow on dvd in concert, watch Blackmore as he orchestrates the band with just a look or nod. Some ex-members hated him, others say he is a pure genius. Then again i don't need to defend him, his music speaks for it self.

I am a new fan to Priest.  How do you all distinguish between Tipton and Downing when it comes to thier solos.

To me Downing has more squeling in his solos.  In other words he sounds like Hendrix/VanHalen.

Tipton to me sounds more blusey.  Its like he leans more towards Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore.

Am I right in that assesment?  I also think that Tipton comes across to me as more of the lead soloist.  Even though Downing can play leads as well.  In my mind its almost like Downing is a Riffer first.  Soloist second.  Tipton is a Soloist first, a Riffer second.  At the show in Winnipeg, Downing seemed more on fire, while Tipton seemed more subdued in a good way, more cool in his guitar aprooch
