| It is a shame that Deep Purple's line-up wasnt stable. Maybe if Gillan and Roger Glover were part of original line-up maybe they could have been even more successful. But then, Glen Hughes and David Coverdale wouldnt have had the platform they would have, and maybe Dio wouldnt be where he was if Rainbow hadnt come about as well as bands like Whitesnake. |

While I like most of the classic Deep Purple, I really liked Perfect Strangers too. True it was geared to 80's music, but it was great. My absolute favorite song on the LP was "Im not responsible". My first recording of this was a cassette tape, and at the end of that song it speeds up alot and goes crazy, making me go crazy thinking my new tape was being eaten by my player, but turned out, that is just the way it was. The really cool thing is not all LPs and cassettes ended like that, so it was a crap shoot as to whether you got the regular speed or the fast one. I knew people who had it on LP and that didn't happen, so then I bought a CD years later and guess what, the speed up was there again. That was a good record, it was not Machine Head that gave us Smoke on the Water, but it was good.

I like "Machine Head" as far as studio albums go. I really only like and/or listen to three Deep Purple albums.
"Machine Head"
"Deepest Purple-The Very Best of..."
"Live in Japan"
with "Deepest Purple" being my favorite. |

| my favourite deep purple album is a self titled one from 1969 with songs such as the painter rosemary, bird has flown , blind , and an excellent orchestral/rock piece by jon lord and blackmore called april . ian gillan hadnt joined at this time so notables were blackmore paice and lord , in rock is awesome and machinehead is truly amazing, also love stormbringer notables here were david coverdale glenn hughes blackmore, lord ,paice and the album that brought them to the masses KOYBD is also a favourite was lucky enough to see them at the orpheum theatre doing machinehead in its entirety and thin lizzy as the opener , mind blowing , don airey ( our favourite priest keyboardist) did a great job !!! cheers ! |

They all have their moments but anyone would be hard pressed to put up a case against Machine Head and In Rock. Those two are the best by far. Of the big three in early metal Deep Purple were the least consistant. Sabbath and Led Zep had steady lineups for a decade which allowed them to put out a consistant body of work. You could argue that any album that Sabbath released between Black Sabbath and Sabotage was their best, likewise anything Led Zep released between LZ 1 and Physical Grafitti you could argue as being their best. In fighting and lineup changes in Deep Purple meant that they didn't have the chance to release a lot of music while they were at their peak. However Deep Purple did spawn two other good band in Rainbow and Whitesnake.

| Listening to Perfect Strangers album at the moment and when I first listened to it, I wasn't sure. But I started to get into it, it's kind of fresh, and shows Deep Purple on Top Form, iwht a more modern sound but one distinct difference is, although ian Gillan has an amazing voice, it is clear that since he left in 1973, his upper register has changed completely, but still has a good range. But as a Whitesnake fan, Burn is again, an amazing record. Also, In Rock is a strong and really cool record. The obvious choices would be In Rock, Machine Head, and even burn. I might put forward that The Battle Rage On is a pretty decent record. |
