I don't think Russia is a real threat for the West right now. Let's not forget that it took the Russians almost a decade to regain full control over Chechnya, a tiny republic in the Northern Caucasus. Russia is the biggest country in the world and Chechnya has the same size as Connecticut. There over 140 million Russians and only 1 million Chechens. So go figure...
Russia is a big joke, they don't know how to run a country efficiently. There's a lot of violence, filth, racism and alcoholism down there. Many Russian men are obese and have a serious drinking problem. It's like planet of the apes down there. That's why the Russian population continues to decrease.
But the Russians and their sub-chimpanzee president want to make a statement and show the world that they are still one of the baddest gorillas in the jungle. So they attacked a dwarf state like Georgia, because they can't lose that war. Needless to say that I'm not impressed. The Russians are playing filthy games in the Caucasus. The war that's going on in Georgia right now is an old conflict. When the Soviet Union collapsed and Georgia declared it's independence, the ethnic Abkhaz people in Georgia's western province of Abhkazia made up only a whoppin' 18% of the population. The majority of the people in that province were Georgian. But with heavy support of the Russians the ethnic Abkhaz mountain people forced the entire Georgian population to leave the province. Between 10.000 and 30.000 Georgians were brutally murdered during this campaign of ethnic cleansing.
There's a very interesting article about this on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_cleansing_of_Georgians_in_Abkhazia Everyone should read this. If you don't want to read the entire article, than only read the testimonies. It's crazy stuff. It blew my mind! Just a little example:
"The local villagers (including women and children) were massacred while the church of St George became the scene of a blood bath. The nuns were raped and killed in front of the orthodox priests, father Yuri Anua and father Andria. Both priests were taken outside of the church and questioned about the ownership of the land in Abkhazia. After answering that Abkhazia was neither Georgian nor Abkhaz land but God's, they were shot by a confederate soldier."
Atrocities like these happened in the 1990's in Eastern Europe, they were committed by terrorists with heavy support of the Russians. That goes to show that the evil empire is still out there. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by TIMBONI from Sunday, August 17, 2008 9:05:53 PM)

This is really scary for me. I grew up seeing pictures of Bear bombers on the front page of the newspaper when they would come over the pole and get greeted by the squadron from Otis AFB. Difference here is the lack of structure. Russia still has all the firepower they used to have, but with no real centralized government. This could get really bad, really fast. If Iran fires up at the same time, welcome to hell !
