That is also what Priest currently does with a lot of high notes. Uses guitar instead of vocals to hit the high notes.
Ever, by chance, hear David Grisman & Sons do "Hot for Teacher?" It is on an album called "Strummin' with the Devil." Really interesting album but that song, in particular, has no vocals at all. Grisman is, without question, one of the greatest mandolin players ever. As I play that particular instrument, I was interested to hear how he would do it. In short, he has a fiddle essentially mimic all DLR's vocals. Worked very well. I would be thinking along the same lines.
I'd also suggest what I mentioned before. Look at what Priest is CURRENTLY doing in terms of song selection as well as how they do it. They are taking their own limitations into account now and are tuning down and using other methods to compensate in their songs. Thus, my first suggestion of including some Nostra tunes. IMO, most if not all were written with knowledge of the Metal God's vocal register NOW in mind. Trying to hit the super highs of the 70s? You'd throw a vocal rod.
