I grew up in So Cal and surfed most of my early years. My grandmother owned a small coffee shop across from the pier in Huntington Beach. I saw sharks all the time but they never bothered us. Of course, I never encountered a Great White!! HA!!!!!!!!!!!! Saw dolphins all the time, too. They were cool.
