you might not win every game, but you would never get out worked. would lead to a lot of 0-0 shootouts. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by ronhartsell from Monday, February 02, 2009 7:47:49 PM)

for sure. the hall of fame and the jersey retirement are separate ideas and issues. the HOF is for a player who contributed to the game, one who contributed to the team is different.
never heard of santo, but the hockey version is probably ken Danyko. played well for all his years in NJ. all star, not even close any year. never signed for millions, never was the number one guy, but a solid stand up player and member of the comunity.

I guess what it comes down to is that the retiring of a jersey is 'intimate'...an 'organization' type of thing...what did the player mean to the team, perhaps even the community...you said it best when you said you can't imagine that player in another jersey...The Cubs retired Ron Santo's no.10, and he may never get into the HOF...but he bleeds 'Cubbie Blue' and is well loved in the Chicago community...it's these types of people that DESERVE this honor...and make no mistake, it is an HONOR!!!
