When we bought our very first dog (a German Sheperd puppy), my mom would have him isolated in the kitchen while she was at work and I was in school. Puppies will get somewhat destructive when they're left on their own (and they'll get whiny, too). Once we get home we take out the barrier and let the puppy run around and play with us. What my sister did with her first dog is leave the TV on for the day while she's at work. That might also be a method you can use.
