Sorry, can't do that either thanks to the linguistic phenomenon known as a "cultism."

In any language, when a popular word conflicts with another causing confusion among the (usually illiterate / ill-educated) population, it either does not evolve as it should or it is replaced by another term. I could give you a number of examples in Spanish, Portuguese and French but think of your own language and irregular verbs. Verbs with irregular past participles. Mis-pronounced words that are wrong but are still common.

Cultisms are quite common in religious terms. They "stagnate" due to the "cultos" use. Dipthongs don't compact, vowels open. Terms change meaning. One of the only reasons that we have theories as to how Latin sounded (only theories) is thanks to some who tried to correct popular pronunciation and usage. TENERUM not TENREUM.

Look it up. I ain't kidding! LOL!!!! Football here now refers to the "gridiron" game. Ingrained into the popular mentality. As such, it will never go back. Even if we DO also play rugby!
