Indeed. Usually my "corrections" are merely to poke fun. Generally, I understand that not everyone writes the way I do, nor should I expect everyone here to do so. I enjoy discussions regarding English composition and origin and whatnot simply because it is a passion of mine. You would be amazed at the number of members on this site that have improved their writing simply by engaging me. I do not mean that as a boast! I have had more than one PM saying so and I have noticed the change when I see certain posts. Honestly, I think that is marvelous.
Spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence structure and all the rest mean something to me. That is what one might call a "quirk". Obviously, it is not something that is common! As far as this place, I use English as a tool for fun AND for educating. There is no rule that says people here have to listen to me but, apparently, many do. Good on them! Why anyone would not wish to improve the way they write and speak is a true mystery to me. Self-improvement is vital for development. Of course, I do understand that there are those that do not care for THAT, either! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am appalled at what passes for communication these days. Perhaps that is my age showing but I think it is just disgusting to aspire to speak like an idiot yet, so many do. Dialect notwithstanding, people (especially the young) seem to take some sort of misguided pride in speaking as if they never left the fifth grade. I suppose it is as you said...individual taste. Or, as I believe, no taste at all. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Nicky007 from Friday, February 12, 2010 7:19:34 AM) | | Nicky007 wrote: | | Neat post that you put in there, Mike. Some interesting stuff about the English language that I didnt know yet. Thanx
I thought I was the only one in this joint who could do English properly
You'r right: "Know thy audience"
On rockfora I do a lotta slang and contractions, cause that's sorta the style; but if necessary, I can be fully standard in both American and British.
I do however agree with you, Mike, that some members here are too casual or rabid and write abominable posts that often are barely understandable. If I write a post, I may use humor, sarcasm, metaphors etc, but I always have some message to convey. Why waste our time with just some arbitrary raving and ranting ?
Well, I guess it's all a question of individual taste and priorities, and the more members there are, the more variation there'l be. Some members write stuff that interests me, and some not - and I'm OK with that. Accordingly I can't expect that my stuff is interesting to all members.
Getting back to the "and", I like to use it in the sense that was described in Point 7 in Dictionary.com, "implying continuation".
And so it will remain with me
