In reality you take a chance living anywhere in NZ, as the whole country is astride a fault line. It's only a matter of time before an enormous one hits unfortunately. The time this one struck has a lot to do with the fact there has been no deaths, it struck at 4:35am local time.
Christchruch is on this map here, so you can see where it is relative to other cities :
From what I see about that section of NZ. It's been changing for years, if not eons. It's like California, you take the chance to live there. Right near Wellington was it not? Glad you were not present my friend and that no major death occured with this one. First thing I thought about when I read that today in the papers online, was please don't let Becks be near that! I'm selfish. I want my friends to be safe first, then I'll think about the rest. Glad you were not there.

Hi everyone, been away for a couple of days at a meeting but back home now. Been a massive earthquake in a city on the South Island called Christchurch, I used to live there, and ironically don't remember ever experiencing an earthquake in the 3 years I was there, but heaps of small ones in the nearly two years I've been back on the North Island! Parts of the central city are in ruins, but there have been no deaths thank God, two men have been seriously injured and there have been other minor injuries. Water mains have burst and seweage lines have burst too, hopefully that is all under control by now, or soon.
