Well here's a quick rundown of how TV in NZ works.
We have 3 'main' free to air channels, which I suppose is now 4, who knows. We are switching to digital tv this year I believe, where people will need to buy something called a Freeview box in order to get the digital Freeview channels (as the name suggests, after purchasing said box, the viewing of these channels is free). Freeview has about 26 channels, some of which are actually radio, some of which are pretty random, some of which are local programming mostly (no sports channels, movie channels, anything like that). The other option is Sky tv, which has been around for years. There's 50+ channels, you subscribe to the packages you want, the basic package has normal channels, news channels, doco channels etc. Sports package costs extra, as does the movie package or other random stuff like the arts channel. We just have the basic package plus a channel called SoHo which screens all the decent shows like Game of Thrones.
