Sadly, it is a massive problem on the islands. Easy to understand why. You are born on the most isolated island group on the planet and have very limited opportunities as, well, you are stuck in the ocean on a freakin' island! Lots of homeless, drug problem (and all that it brings) is sky-high and a ton of "crazies" in the streets. Kinda like California loons but in rich, touristy places where they are likely to be swept under the rug so visitors don't see them. VERY striking in Waikiki as it is such a rich stretch of property. Take a car to the suburbs, though and, like any major city, you best know where you are going.
Property costs a fortune as does food as does gas as does internet, etc, etc. All adds to a sad "underbelly." While warmer, it is a breeding ground for gangs and the homeless.
Are you serious?!? At a Safeway?!? HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Closest I've been to gangs was when I was in high school. I was waiting for my mom across the street from the building when two large groups, one at each end of the street, began to walk toward each other. I saw some of them brandishing small knives and I ran off to hide somewhere. Thankfully a police car arrived. One loud siren and both groups dispersed. 'Twas crazy.
Seems as though Hawaii would be the last place where such things happen, but apparently it does. No place in the world is safe.

I forgot to mention that there was a cool gang violence breakout at a Safeway in Hilo! I stopped by to pick up some food to take down to the hot springs (ALL food is expensive in Hawaii) just to see some shirtless wonder being escorted out to the paddy wagon with a bunch of the rival gang members shouting smack from the other end of the store about a block away (BIG Safeway).
One of the unspoken problems of Hawaii. Gangs, drugs and poverty. I don't really watch it but I guess that is why Dog the Bounty Hunter has so much work there. "Go with God, bro!"

So I was at Wally-Mart earlier today, and they were giving away free kitchen knives to shoppers over 21.
Keep in mind that this particular Wally-Mart is in one of the "Gateway Cities" that surround Los Angeles, and one known for its gang violence. Now add free kitchen knives into the mix.

I think I'll have to bring a tazer gun with me next time.
