There are definite problems with the idea, as you pointed out. It's just really hard to take that the rules are up for such a wide variety of interpretation. I caught the replay of the game from last night. Funny, they never replayed the offsides that everyone in The Joe saw. Last night, we came home and they were talking about it on the NHL channel. The closest anyone came to saying it was offsides was, "Franzen threw the puck out of the zone and Toews doesn't appear to clear the zone." I also noticed that they never replayed any of the penalties/no calls that we had issues with. Wonder why Abby and the Hawk were given 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct? Abby was crosschecked 3 times to the ice - NO CALL. Which is funny because he got a 2 minute penalty for the exact same thing the game before and they said, "They'll give you 1 time, but you can't crosscheck him twice or they will call it." Uh huh. Abby went after the guy and I don't blame him. It's hard not knowing what will be called in each game, depending on the refs. People are talking about the Penalty Shot call against the Wings. Yes, it fits the definition. However, a lot worse has been done in the playoffs in the same situation and no call was made at all. They are also saying it's a problem with consistency and the lack of it makes fans very suspicious. YUP!!
the hard part is unlike football the game keeps going for 2 more minutes, then you end up winding the clock back if someone changes a call.
I have been told hockey is the hardest sport to referee. I would argue soccer is, but both are damned hard. not sure how you do a later review. Watched the 10 worst calls in playoff history the other day, some calls were amazing. one was 4 feet offside. but thats a 30 year study of however many games per year to come up with 10 calls that bad.
I wish they could stop changing the damn rules. one year you can slash the stick, next year you cant. imagine the hooking of the late 80's going on today. shit the box would never be empty.
still pissed off about the trapazoid.

And truly that is all that I am asking for - consistency. I played basketball and I know exactly how to get away with dirty shit if I was that kind of player, which I wasn't. It's all in the timing and acting, which I had a front row seat for I'm starting to think it would be a good idea to allow the coaches to challenge calls/non-calls similiar to American football. At least that way games wouldn't be decided because of bad calls or no calls.

NO SHIT!!! Abby gets his stick slashed out of his hands on a break away in another game and there is NO CALL AT ALL!!! WTF??? It's a crap shoot if you are going to get decent refs of not. And don't even start with the complete and utter bullshit that refs don't miss much (you know who I mean!). We tried to tape it while at the game, but of course a huge storm rolled in and nothing recorded. Looked to us like the Hawks were offsides on the play that resulted in a goal (Franzen threw the puck out of the zone and Toews never cleared out of the zone before it was brought back in). Smith needs to start wearing a Hawks sweater, Jesus he is horrible! Too bad DeKeyser had his thumb broken by the Ducks or this might be a different series.
