Grand Ole' Opry (beautiful) is literally in the backyard of both the mall and Opryland Hotel. Too close NOT to see while the mall is with walking distance too. I always dig the Gibson store / shop in the mall as you can watch them make instruments there. Just ask Spa who made me pull her out of there kicking and screaming (heh....quite the opposite, in all honesty, as she is not here to defend herself). Back downtown SHE really wanted to go to the Parthenon which is back towards the other places I named downtown. Google it for images and you'll see the giant reproduction. Has a really cool museum underneath the building itself that is worth seeing as well if they catch it when it is open. If not, just a drive through the park / seeing the massive statues of a structure that was built in 1890 or so (full scale replica!) is pretty damn impressive. All that is in West End.
Yeah, they LOVE Nathan Bedford Forrest around here. Many a park and rest stop named after him as well. Like Columbus, NOT a nice guy, as you said. Nice that she knows so much about the US Civil War as she is visiting the heart of it.
Great tips, thanks! Tomorrow they're off to the Grand Ole Opry and some other place, can't remember where now. They did a tour of the state capitol and she was rather disgusted that there was a large bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest sitting there. She told me about him and he doesn't sound like the kind of guy who should have a bust of his head in the state capitol she is very well versed/read in civil war history - she has just visited Champion Hill battle field where a distant cousin of ours died fighting in the 24 Iowa Infantry.

Kewl !! Tell her to swing on by!
Ah, she'll love Nasheville. TONS to do. If she wants to hear some good music, there is a little hole-in-the-ground place (literally as the enterance is in an alley) started by BB King. "Blackstone's" is a great brewery with wonderful but not terribly expensive food down that same street. Have to take a taxi or drive to get there as they are not exactly within walking distance. Another "do not miss."
Opryland (mall) and especially the hotel are also just amazing. Hotel before the mall but they sit right next to one another. Hotel is like a giant amusement park!
I name indoor places as it is rather brisk and rainy fall weather here. Hope she has a good time!

Guido! Random piece of info for you - my twin sister is currently in your neck of the woods (state wise anyway), she's in Nashville at the moment with a couple of friends. Drove from Memphis, via the Shiloh battlefield, today.
